It really warps the game state. Had I not crafted it, I might have faced less heat but probably wouldn't have won either because my scoring pace would have been super slow. I never built another roost after the turmoil and my bad card draw was part of that.
I would love if the app version had a replay system, with the ability to control game speed, rewind, and pause. Would make for more effective ways to record games for playthroughs and game reviews.
Thank you for the video! This particular video is, in my opinion, filled with optimal decisions from each and every player; in a very crowded and interactive board composition that is! It's satisfying to watch a well-deserved victory such as yours. Just a little bit of audio syncing and it would be a flawless video. Great job!
yeah, my editing software was acting up, even the game audio was getting desynched which was super weird, hence why there are no sound effects, I muted the game audio and added the steam soundtrack. Any tips? I kinda just watch the playthrough and commentate live but maybe it would be better to record specific snippets and just insert those instead of my somewhat rambly commentary throughout.
@@nitrorev i mean, thats basically what im doing, with the exception that i speed my games up and cut them to ribbons for time. I think the only part i found jarring is that you werent using past tense in a postgame commentary, but tbh i mightve been the only person who would notice. As for what footage to include - i havent experimented much with trimming it down to just highlights. Having to relearn the board state multiple times in order to keep up seems like a chore
@@Nevakanezah_ Oh I trimmed a lot for time. That's what caused the desynch issues in the first place. But 8 extra minutes of nothing happening isn't good TV so I needed lots of cuts.
Soooo.... coffin single-handedly won you the game. Very interesting game from the cats though, would've loved to see what they could have done, if only they could've count right ahahah. Nice content keep it up!
playing as birds and purchasing mercenaries of the river brotherhood. The leader of the birds is the commander, can I inflict additional damage if there are only river brotherhood wars in the clearing or do I need to have at least one bird in the clearing for the additional damage effect to work?
The rule of the Commander simply says you deal +1 hit as attacker in battle. It doesn't say "you must have at least 1 bird warrior" or something like that so you can assume any faction abilities carry over to the mercenaries as well. An exception is Lords of the forest where Eyrie rule on ties. This rule specifies that an eyrie piece must be present to benefit from this ability so mercenaries alone don't get to rule on ties.
53:00 am I missing something? Why didn’t the lizards battle your (defenseless) fox roost? It would’ve thrown you into turmoil on a lack of recruit. The lizards would have scored a point from it. The (hated) outcast was a fox. They had the acolytes. Was this an oversight or am I missing something?
That would have triggered the Bird's comeback mechanism. The 3rd step of Eyrie birdsong is that if there are no Roosts on the map, you get to place a Roost and 3 warriors in the clearing with the least warriors. It's not a commonly known rule because it only happens when Eyrie loses all their roosts which is rare but Tad is a veteran player and was aware of it and that's why it was better to leave the roost be, otherwise I could have popped up in a more convenient clearing with 3 free warriors and had a much easier path to victory.
Why didn't the Lizards take out your last roost on Turn 8? That would have put you into instant turmoil and essentially miss an entire turn. Is there some tactical error I'm missing here?
On the last turn? They went into the last turn with no cards in hand because they lost too many gardens so they couldn't build. Warriors were their only means to blockade me. The were operating optimistically, if I had a rabbit or mouse, their plan would have worked.
Didn't have the cards to drop a garden there. Now Turn 7 cleaning up the Cats cardboard? I wonder if I had played more defensively that turn and bolstered things if things might have come out differently? but I felt pressured to keep pace with the birds scoring. I think birds were lucky to avoid turmoil in those last turns. Then again if they had turmoiled I'm not sure I could've closed out the game anyway.
@@tad6049 Well played, Sir! The cat buildings were too good to pass up but there were a few times that all the acolytes felt like a gift for the coffins. Not sure if you all seeing the coffin count would have allowed you to cut me off just before the thresholds. Great game though! That last turn puzzle was really crunchy and my luck was really good overall. Crushed through the WA warrior and token twice!😂
The game is more tense when there's more competition for space. ADSET discretely fixes this by allowing the players the agency to choose a faction that works better in the current matchup given their seat position, so you don't have to be cats in 4th seat against birds, lizards and WA.
@@nitrorev I guess I’m looking at it more casually lol. We use a house rule to discard a matching card to remove the rubble, can’t build same turn it was removed. But we are playing casually.
Is there anything Cats could have done to play better this game? It just felt like they were doing all the right things, but fell so freaking behind due to bad RNG and getting repeatedly targeted by woodland alliance
They're a good player but the Soup Kitchens miscount caught them off guard and was extremely costly. In this matchup, it's very hard for everyone to get what they want because it's 3 very board hogging factions. I think they could have maybe recruited more and built up enough presence to defend what few buildings they had and establish martial law to prevent the re-entry of WA into their side. Dealing with WA over and over wasted a lot of their tempo but was only possible because WA faced no resistance in the form of Martial Law. Then just sit back building and scoring what you can and hope the other 3 kill each other until you can into a good position.
Even if they didn't miscalculate, I still feel like they would be significantly behind. Because the action economy of cats are fixed all game, their point gain potential is also pretty linear. If they get wrecked they have very little way to recover. Also want to point out that the end game score had them at a 17 point score deficit. I don't think that miscalculation was enough to make up 17 points. Ive only played root casually with not so experienced players, but over the 12ish games I've never seen the cats win a single time. I just feel like the faction is severely underpowered.
@@TheJuicyTangerine Use Advanced Setup and the Exiles and Partisans deck. Those 2 changes not only help cats but make the game better overall (we still need ADSET in digital). Cats are a hard faction to play well and any misplay or suboptimal action can cost you. I've reached a high level with cats because I've played hundreds of games with them and listened to advice from experts who paved the way for me. Check out my 1st digital playthrough and you can hear my thoughts whilst playing that game. Also watch Nevakanezah's Cat guide, he's got the best tips and tricks as well as Waterman121's Cat puzzle videos, they made me a much better player along with Woodland War Machine a podcast dedicated entirely to Root. Starting in the bottom corner of the map may have been a poor choice because it's easier to get stuck without building slots. Cats are also very vulnerable to misguided new players. They are pretty easy to shut down and it's easy to misread the board and stop the cats even when it's not warranted, often letting WA or Vagabond get away with a win. Advanced players know to leave the cats be until it's actually necessary to stop them.
31:49 Nah, you shouldn’t let them undo that march in real life either. They got blocked by a smartly managed SK probably intended to do just that. It was a great play. I guess it depends on how lenient your group is but that undo would feel really cheap to me.
For me, I allow undo up until info is revealed. Moves happen where I don't bring enough warriors and I need to bring 1 extra to do what I need to and that's fine. I could even walk on top of a sympathy token and undo the move UNLESS the card is handed to the WA player. The moment the card is handed, it's over, no take-backs.
@@j.prt.979 Not sure exactly when they realised but it probably would have been immediate because the little green flag indicating that WA ruled the clearing did not turn orange. Digital is very unforgiving in that way.
I'm out of town without my rules set. I'll get to them in November when I'm home. Vagabond especially needs a lot of attention as it has a lot of convoluted rules.
This is why the marquise the cat have a huge benefit at advanced setup
That coffin makers craft was clutch. Especially with the saboteurs draw.

34:12 Why didn't lizard rule the rabbit clearing where the WA's base is at? Lizard has 3 warriors there, right? Is this a bug?
Not a bug, the WA has crafted Soup Kitchens, so the sympathy tokens count for 2 ruling pieces.
Why didn't the Lizards take out your last roost on Turn 8? That would have put you into instant turmoil and essentially miss an entire turn. Is there some tactical error I'm missing here?
Step 3 of Eyrie's birdsong. If no roosts are on the map, I get to place a new roost somewhere else AND get 3 warriors with it.
im a new player so i dont understand much, but this is so fascinating
Welcome! Root is a fascinating game and very rewarding to get better and better at.
On turn 8 couldn’t Lizards just convert your warrior at the roost and then kill the roost? That would force turmoil, no?
No, because Eyrie's has a comeback mechanism that would give me back another roost and 3 Warriors. That's why they didn't attack me.
@@nitrorev Ah, right. Good point. For some reason I was thinking it only applied if you lost all your warriors and roosts.
