The closure of Wellington's trolleybus system was a environmental disaster. When the last trolleybus enter the depot at 11.30pm on 31 October 2017 the power was switched off to all 9 trolleybus routes and replaced by diesel buses for the introduction of the so called multi hub rapid bus network that has become a operational and economic disaster.

@@mayormc - It was a totally stupid decision made by certain local government politicians who got sucked into the hype of overseas transport experts. Wellington is a compact city that has a hilly topography which is ideal for trolleybus operations but the experts said diesel and eventually battery buses are the way to go, despite battery bus trails over the years have ended in failure. 6 of the trolley bus routes could have easily been used in the new rapid bus network.

@@youcanpunchmeintheface - I agree like with most of the city and regional rate payers who help to fund the Wellington city and Wellington region's bus, rail and ferry services, it was a stupid decision. Reducing the diesel bus fleet with battery buses is a a good move. In Auckland they are trialing a hydrogen/electric bus and I would like to see how that bus would handle Wellington city's hilly routes.

Wouldn’t a trolley bus system be perfect for a BRT route, you have a high concentration of large buses running on a single corridor. Making all those busses run on electric power lines would be easier than battery since they wouldn’t need to recharge at a station every time.

The worst individually is the closure of the coastal line in Liguria, Italy. Very bad for tourism and three cities are totally without a rail link. They did construct a new line but inland and all through tunnels so you don't see anything, and as mentioned, three cities are totally without a rail link. A crime in one of the world's most famous tourist areas. They could have kept the old line for local trains and the new line for expresses.

They just built and opened a $0.5 billion Light Rail tunnel under one of the rivers a few years ago and now, on their website, they are claiming high maintenance costs forcing them to consider abandoning a major portion of the same Light Rail system. The "Library" line, in service for over 100 years (previously a trolley line), to be taken out of service and the valuable private right-of-way abandoned.

Pittsburgh's so called subway included a branch to Pennsylvania Station used by all of 4 Amtrak trains a day. Only a couple trips before it closed entirely.

@@centredoorplugsthornton4112 Nobody's going to repay any funding and they all know it. At one time the commitment to expanding Light Rail was such that the Penn Station spur was planned to be an extension up the Allegheny Valley with its own tunnel under the river. Plus the tunnel that was actually built was to extend Light Rail up the Ohio Valley and eventually to the airport. Burned by every politician at the city, state and federal level for cost overruns, the transit authority has reversed course, looking to dismantle and eventually close the entire Light Rail system they spent over $3 billion to build. Nobody wants to be associated with Light Rail.

"@joe stewart" ... They haven't understood the ongoing initiative "RE-CONNECTING AMERICA", at all.
On the other hand, it is a phenomenon also in other cities, to raise these systems artificial more expensive (so that some can fill their pockets) and then wondering, that there's trouble ahead. Those responsibles do not even understand, that they are sawing off the branch, on which they are sitting themselves.
In particular the Lightrail System enables cost-effective handling, because expensive tunnel sections can be limited to the bare minimum. For the price of 1 kilometer Subway, 40 kilometers of modern Lightrail Line can be built above ground in Germany ... with the "right-of-way" and with priority signalling at all traffic lights and junctions, underway.
      What about "Shannon Loop" ?

      @@centredoorplugsthornton4112 ... It doesn't get any more stupid !
Pittsburgh was one of the very few remaining classic Streetcar Systems within the United States. It survived the corruption of the automobile lobby and the philosophy of the "car-friendly city" for decades, until the upgrade to a Lightrail System came in the 80s.
And now, of all times, in the face of climate change and the political U-turn in transport policy, where rail based transportation is celebrating a revival around the world, where car traffic is more and more banned downtown and city centers are being revitalized ... now all of this is to be reversed in Pittsburgh ? It has to be said clearly, that this is not a solution, but a disinvestment. Backwards instead of forwards !
However, it is not the transportation system itself to blame, but the dilettantes who are responsible for planning, construction and operation in Pittsburgh. That's why they dont't want to be associated with LRT anymore, so as not to be reminded of the shame about their own ineptitude and their mistakes, what has undermined the success of LRT.

The C751B rolling stock will also last for only ~20-25 yrs in Singapore (2000-1 to 2021-5) as the gov't plans to replace them together with older rolling stock (C151 & 651) using the R151 to increase fleet standardisation (we originally had these 3 models as the 1st model was bought longer ago when ridership demand was lower, then as it rose more modern models of rolling stock were bought to increase capacity). The older stock has also undergone resignalling only ~4-5 yrs ago

Not a transit system, is a model. The Barcelona Metro 1000 (Line 5)/1100 (Line 4) series. Those was my childhood, until they're got replaced by 5000 series in the L5 in 2005 and the 2100/9000 series in the L4 in 2009 😭

I'm so sorry to say that Cairngorm Mountain Railway is not at all in (the neighborhood) of Inverness, with city is almost 60 km away. Better should be Aviemore (18 km as the crow flies)
There is also hope: BBC wrote on 3 november 2020:
"Repairs to the UK's highest railway are to begin this week.
The Cairngorm funicular has been closed since September 2018 due to structural problems.
The Scottish government has provided £16m towards the cost of fixing the railway owned by public body Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).
The funicular connects a base station with a restaurant and a ski area 1,097m (3,599ft) up Cairn Gorm mountain near Aviemore.
HIE, which also owns the ski centre, secured planning permission for the repairs from the Cairngorm National Park Authority earlier this year and Scottish government funding last month."

These systems and rolling stock are a good example of it.

Not surprised about the Russian monorail. Very few live up to expectations and are generally a waste of money.
As for New Zealand- what on earth is going on in that country? Replacing the Wellington trolleybuses (I've seen the system) with diesel when nearly everywhere, cities are trying to phase out diesel, and (I don't know if it has happened yet) the de-electrification of the North Island Trunk Line, again in favour of diesel locomotives.

    • @mihan2d

To be fair the monorail did not close, yet so many people treat it like it's gone. But it is such a huge liability that if they do close it and replace it with tram connection as per plans, it will be a great relief.

For many years, the Romanian city of Constanța had one of the largest tram and trolleybus systems in Romania! But they were closed in 2008 (tram) and 2010 (trolleybus). I was sad when they replaced these with polluting diesel buses from Belarus! I have a video from the system back then: ruclips.net/video/KxEYP_mwMng/видео.html

Because mayors in Russia don’t care about people or cities. They care about money. Closing tram/trolleybus and replacing it by minibuses - is very good way to earn money.
And because Russia sucks in urban planning. It’s like USA in 1960s.
