  • I had already done taste tests on all three of these tomatoes, but I started to wonder if tasting them at the same time would change my mind on any of them. It turns out that it didn't.

    I grew all of these tomatoes and i ended up liking Rutgers and Parks Whooper better then the 3 you tested and they produced better for me too.
    I'm trying 42 different tomatoes this year and I'm hoping in 3 or 4 years i will find my top 25 tomatoes i like.
    My goal is to have about
    7 reds
    5 oranges
    3 yellows
    3 pinks
    2 purples
    2 blacks
    2 greens
    1 whites

      @MidwestGardener  7 лет назад

      Thanks for sharing your experience with them! I don't know a whole lot about canning, but if being meaty and juicy is important, they are both of those. If the Eva tasted exactly like the Arkansas Traveler, it would be my perfect tomato.

      Midwest Gardener I grew a few different varieties and did a taste test about a month ago, I'm in the south. The Ivan was hands down the flavor winner. I think it might be my perfect tomato but it was hard to germinate and I wish they were bigger. No pest problems.either. Cherokee Purple is high on the list too. Tomatoes are so much fun!

      That's a hard one, but if I had to pick a cherry tomato, that would be black cherry, medium size, the box car willie has been a good one for me. And for a larger tomato, I'm really liking Carbon.

    Hello there!
    I need some advice from you. I grow pretty much all in containers. I am a new gardener and wanted to ask how to refresh soil used in pots after harvesting? For example... I just got done harvesting corn from containers. Today, I cut the stocks, inverted both containers over tarp, wrestled with getting the roots out, filled container half way up with the same soil, added blood meal and trifecta plus, filled up the containers, added a top dressing of blood meal and trifecta plus again and planted.
    I must say, getting all of the roots out was a pain in the ass.
    Is this the correct way to do this or is there a better way/more efficient way? Thank you!

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  7 лет назад

      Hey Isaac, I'm afraid I'm not the best person to ask. I haven't done much container gardening before this year. I still trying to find my way around when it comes to containers. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. What you described seems like a reasonable approach.

    Nice review and taste test! It's not a big deal, but the "Arkansas Traveler" is actually just "Traveler" www.uaex.edu/yard-garden/resource-library/plant-week/tomato-traveler.aspx
    Most do call it Arkansas Traveler and not a big deal really. Just thought you might want some history.
    FYI, there is a unique honor to being an "Arkansas Traveler". Here is the history behind that: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkansas_Traveler_(honorary_title) I was awarded the Arkansas Traveler by Governor Mike Huckabee when I retired from the Air Force. More tidbits.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the history lesson Brent! I love history too, along with my tomatoes :) That was quite an honor for you to receive an award from Governor Huckabee. I always thought he was a pretty down to earth guy for someone who was governor.

      I hope it wasn't offensive Jim. It came from a good heart. It's hard to express things online.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  7 лет назад

      Not offensive at all, Brent. I'm serious.....I love history. Mater history, U.S. history......all of it. It's odd, because when I was in high school I used to hate U.S. History. Then I got the genealogy bug, and once I started connecting family to historical events, they became a lot more real and interesting. And I've read some of the back stories on some of the heirloom tomatoes, but I didn't know about the Traveler. In that information they mentioned that every community in the Ozarks had a cannery. My mom used to work in one of those. She also picked strawberries in the field. I think she said they got paid by the box.

    • @C3Voyage

      I love history! When we travel, we always try to immerse ourselves into the area's history. Like you, I wasn't big on it as a kid or young man. We're becoming an overcrowded concrete jungle and all of the older, unique places are dying off. Really sad. Hell, even as we speak, folks are trying to re-write history and remove parts of our past.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  7 лет назад

    Judging by looking I'd say the box car Willie looks to be a great choice for the simple fact its flesh to seed ratio looks like a sauce tomato but if it's sweet and tasty and a good sandwich tomato then that's all you can ask for.
    What I'm saying is the Arkansas traveller is too liquify and seedy for good sauce. The box car willy tho looks like a good sauce tomato

    This was a GREAT line up of comparison. 3star tomatoes,heirloom of top durable production in a medium size.
    I am still on thfence with dwarfs. Are they they thnext level? I heard they disease prone. I lost a few plants.
    *WORLDS BEST GARDENING SYSTEM?*
    Try chicken wire vases lined with leaves = mulch all surfaces not just top.
    Worlds best vase or garden, mobile compact system by far. Can be dipped in water buckets save water. Roots gro prolifically under vase so mulch below vases. U can plant 1 gallon seedling, add 3 gallons soil up tomatoe stem up tall 20" vase. U can stretch vase 25"
    24"x32" wire makes 20" tall vase.
    U can lay vase horizontally for a low profile plant, u can then lay blanket in fall preserve warmth cold nights extend season 1month.
    Roots gro right thru it. Watering is easier bcuz sides exposed. Roots breath much better obviously, roots dont burn or get soggy bcuz they stop rather then spiral.

      Dwarf tomatoes can get disease similar to most heirlooms.

      @@MidwestGardener hmmmm ah ok i see i wasnt thinking that. I think u right.
      I was thinking they were perhaps far worse. I think u are right. I will remember that & endure with both. I am Lake Wister on longtude with Los Angeles. Brutally hot herre, so, I am going with more local strain Ark Travel & u have illustrated it has more seeds. 👍
      I also liking Italian heirlooms esp for old school tried & true wisdom & plant durability etc. Wisdom of a tomato extends to winter & u can dry. My Grappoli destroyed 20 varieties in earliest ripe.
      I have found one should always add salt when taste testing in addition no salt. Some become worse, others become faaar better. German lunchbox, Grappoli De Inverno, they became far better.
