  • Pitfall traps are used in GREENRESILIENT to assess the abundance and diversity of soil-dwelling spiders and predatory beetles.
    To set a pitfall trap:
    1. Dig the soil to house the pitfall trap
    2. Place plastic cups (500 ml) in the soil so that the rim is level with the soil surface
    3. Prepare the propylene glycol (antifreeze) and water solution (50/50)
    4. Fill the traps half full (250 ml) with the solution
    5. Cover traps with a plastic roof to prevent overflow of water and trampling by workers
Pitfall traps are replaced/emptied every 14 days
In GREENRESILIENT, all present arthropods are then stored in 60% alcohol and sent to the laboratory for species identification
