Not sure if you know who Pat Pucket is, he is a an old bridle Horse man, actually was a mentor of Buck B. he recommends holding the reins like that, it's actually called a flat hand. You have better control, and yes less risk of dropping them. I also ride split reins like that. ☺ Martin Black says your hand is softer like that. We got your back Danielle.☺

Love the way you hold the reins and so would your horse. Holding reins tight all the time is constant pressure to a horse. This also creates head chuckers as the horse pulls to get relief from the bit and it becomes a habit. Also holding tight constantly can lead to all sorts of problems due to the stress it causes the horse. Relaxed horse equals a relaxed ride and more response if you take up the reins.

My heart skipped a beat at the 2 minute mark, and the view of the back of Dib's head ! That could be my first mare "Restless Breeze " ( Breezy for short ) - foaled 1969 - and that I owned for just over 19 years ! She looked just like that 'from the saddle view' ! She was a deep, solid chestnut coloured Appaloosa - never coloured out ( 'coat pattern' wise) , and looked more like a lighter built Quarter horse. Thanks for that happy memory. :)

Thanks for the heart ( that, unfortunately, disappeared when I edited in her full name !)
I got her just before I turned 21 years old, and my parents had their doubts !! One of the best compliments I ever got about that dear horse was from the guy selling her, when my parents 'voiced their concerns ( ! )' to him - since I'd never owned a horse before !! He just looked them right in the eye, and stated "Don't worry - the Breeze ain't crazy !"
      He was right. :)

Your horse is very well trained so no worries. Good to see you again. I've missed your RUclips channel. Some of my other channels have had foals born so that's been interesting. And I finally was able to purchase a MacBook, my first Apple product ever. RUclips has been helpful in learning how to understand and learn new things. I still use my trusty Chromebook anyway. Lol, how you hold your reins is your business. I grew up on a ranch (many years ago) and we broke many horses. Both our own and for others in our community. As a child, our dad taught us to hold split reins because it gave us more control with the colts, (I think it was also because kids can drop a rein pretty easily) and I was always more comfortable holding my reins that way. Even after you have a well broke horse, with a great neck rein, it’s easier on their mouth with split reins and it’s easier to be certain your reins are even. I believe it’s strictly personal preference, and would certainly be offended by that kind of criticism. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen or heard there were rules. Lol. Whatever floats your boat or trips your trigger.😂. Great video today. I always enjoy your sharing your day….thank you!

I was not a person that ran barrels, but used my dad's pole bending gelding, "Chico". I always ran RLL, but saw you ran LRR. Depends on what you're doing, i.e., cutting, reining or equitation, etc., you may hold your reins in different ways. A female horsetrainer when I was very young was Jane Mayo.

  • @GayleHallAZ

I’ve been riding and training horses since I was 5 years old (I’m 73) on just about every breed and type of tack you can think of in a huge variety of venues, including horse shows, the race track, endurance, eventing, and trail riding, for example. For pushing cows and horses like you’re doing, I prefer roping reins, not split reins. But if I were to use split reins in that same venue, I’d overlap them just like you do to avoid dropping a rein if surprised by something. It also better enables balanced contact on each side of the bit when moving forward. Ultimately, I want my horses responding to leg and seat pressure as soon as possible so mouth contact is kept to a minimum, even with a snaffle. Gaited breeds tend to balance their movements off subtle mouth contact, however.
I envy your lifestyle, though I know it can become hot and dirty work when repeated day after day.
I enjoy yours and Jerry’s videos…keep ‘‘em coming!

I think when you're out on the range it is wise to hold the reins the way you do. If for some reason you drop your reins they will fall on your horse's neck rather than falling on the ground. I also agree that, other than for showing in equitation classes, it's best to stick with what works best for you!

LOL I am from the hills of TN and everything in your world looks like another country to me. Except the horses. Lots and lots and lots of horses in TN (of all kinds). We have two that are our very adventurous and sure footed trail horses. One Tennessee Walking Horse and a Spotted Saddle horse. I love watching what you do. So much land you are on. It is breathtaking. Oh and the rein thing. I think hold them like what works for you and the horse you are riding. I don't know why it would even matter. I didn't even notice. LOL

It’s called cross reined and anybody who rides colts rides like that. It is safe because if something happens the rein will drop on the neck. Also it does make it so a colt feels the bit on the correct side when making rein cues. I ride cross reined.

All Stockman here riding with split reins ride with crossovers like you. It is simply the best way for both rider and especially the horse. You’ve been taught well. And your family are terrific examples of real cowboying, ranching, from what I can see.
You do great holding your own with disrespectful rubbish comments.
I have worked my whole life in male dominated industries and I’ve had my fair share of spiteful and jealous and insecure remarks which makes me more determined to proceed to keep going, and come out on top. On rural properties, the majority of women, work beside their men, on horseback.
In the wars when men went to fight… guess who kept the country working and productive ….WOMEN.
Love your family unit working together. And Brooks is so cute.

You hold your reins how ever they are comfortable for you. I held mine like that unless i was showings in class. I didnt use my strups if i wasnt in an arena, it was just more comfortable. But then i didnt like riding a saddle unless i had to lol. Some people dont understand that a ranchers wife works just as hard as the rancher.

You ride with the reins how you're used to. I can't say there's a right way and a wrong way. It also depends on whether it's 1 rein or split reins. Just whichever bridle I grab for whichever horse I decide to ride.

I agree with the others who said it is you who are riding so hold the reins the way that works for you. If you were holding them the way others wanted you to hold them, then you would have gotten comments about how much you did or did not choke up on the reins or how high you were holding them. As for the comment about just sitting there and looking pretty, just ignore people who are trolling you to get you to react.

Did Henson take offense to being called an old English lady rider? I'm sure, he's been your most influential teacher throughout the years. BTW - I think you're a great rider. Keep showing that ride on Dibs and that new saddle. That should shut some of these naysayers up!
