    For the number one spot, it's little wonder he acquired the nickname of 'Broko'. Straight up busted card. As soon as I saw this video's title, that was the first card that came to mind, immediately followed by: 'If this isn't at number one, this list is wrong.'

    Planeswalkers came out sometime after I finished High School, so I never got to try them out back when I was doing drafts with classmates. Seem like a really cool concept, before that time all the face characters from Magic stories were stuck as Legendary Creatures.
    Though even among Legendaries, Planeswalkers are special as these are the ones that can jump between worlds. The players in the card game are technically also Planeswalkers, as they have the ability to summon creatures and cast spells unique to specific worlds in Magic: The Gathering.

    I remember hearing somewhere that Oko’s +1 is a mistake. During testing the card wasn’t as powerful as it turned out to be because of a difference between intention and text. I don’t remember the exact change but it was one of two things:
    1) “+1: target artifact or creature YOU CONTROL becomes a 3/3…”
    2) “+1: target artifact or creature becomes a 3/3 … … until (the end of)your next turn”
    Either of these changes makes it significantly less powerful and more of a defensive planeswalker like most green/blue planeswalkers are. In case 1, you can’t nullify your opponents threat. It’s basically a +3 to make a 3/3 over the course of two turns. If he manages to not take more than 1 damage by the third turn, you have a creature you could trade with your opponent’s small creature leaving Oko at 1 or 0 loyalty to steal something. In case 2, being a temporary transformation (like most planeswalker abilities are) means you need to constantly use that ability to maintain the effect. Starting with 4 loyalty, using the +1 puts it at 5 and without a blocker it takes the hit and is put down to 2. The difference here is that you can’t +2 it to set up turning it into a 3/3 next turn because then the opponent’s creature returns to it’s threatening state. And without casting a creature to block for Oko, using the +1 a second time to keep the threat locked down leaves Oko at 3 loyalty and dead to a second attack. On it’s own it doesn’t protect itself very well. It needs you to have a board that can defend it and in exchange it can negate a threat long enough for you to use the -5 to trade it. Instead of being a one-man powerhouse that nullifies your opponent’s board and generates it’s own protection, it becomes a support for a somewhat established board to *temporarily* shut off a threat that can dismantle it. In either case, Oko is much more of a defensive control card than the powerhouse it is, and from my understanding it was played like option 1 during testing as intended despite technically being able to target an opponent’s board. Because this didn’t lead to an immediate infinite combo, it wasn’t errata’d if that was the intention (like Marath, will of the wild for example, a creature with an activated ability of paying X mana and removing X +1/+1 counters from itself to either A: make an X/X elemental token, B: put X +1/+1 counters onto another creature, or C: deal X damage to any target. It was errata’d to say that for each option, X can’t be 0. Otherwise you could pay 0 mana and remove 0 counters to create a 0/0 token which would die immediately and trigger death effects to damage your opponents, and you could do that infinitely as you always had enough mana and counters to activate the effect)

    Having stopped playing competitively shortly before war of the spark and entirely stopping following mtg right before throne of eldraine I was shocked to see Jace the Mindsculper and Liliana of the veil being only at 6 and 8. I remember those cards were pretty much numbers 1 and 2 in modern for the longest time, but I probably shouldn’t be surprised that war of the spark brought so many incredibly powerful planeswalkers, after all that’s the entire point of the set.

      I think it's more that Modern, Legacy, and Vintage have all become much much faster formats, largely due to the Modern Horizons sets being insanely pushed power-wise. JtMS and Liliana play a long game that just isn't viable in those formats anymore. You've got to have a plan to lock the game down fast anymore; Modern games are generally conceded on turn 3 or 4 anymore.

    Just to explain something DuelLogs didn't go into.
    You can't have multiple copies of the exact same planeswalker card because of the Legendary Rule. Ob Nixilis gets around this by having the copy loose Legendary.
    However you could have Teferi, Hero of Dominaria and Teferi. Time Raveler because while they both represent the same character they aren't the same as far as the Legendary Rule cares.

    Just a quick thing about Teferi, Time Raveler regarding the +1. That ability in particular is extremely good in Modern, since the premier removal spell is Prismatic Ending, which is a Sorcery. His +1 lets you cast it, as well as board sweepers like Supreme Verdict, at instant speed rather than having to do it on your own turn. While his -3 and static definitely pull the load as far as the power of the card, to say all of his abilities aren't fantastic is a tad incorrect.

    Can't really argue the list at all, there's a few honorable mentions I'd throw in though... and the main reason why I think they're worth mentioning.
    Chandra, The Firebrand - Has a -2 ability that copies an instant or sorcery, and can select a different target. Getting to double cast a card can get seriously goofy.
    Liliana of the Dark Realms - Has +1 ability to search for a Swamp (not a basic land, but any land with a Swamp subtype), so you'll never miss a land drop as long as she sticks around
    Elspeth, Sun's Champion - Has +1 ability that spawns 3 creature tokens to protect her, something unique to her specifically as most have to lose loyalty to generate less tokens
    Gideon, Martial Paragon - Has +2 ability to untap all your creatures. Using it after combat almost insures that both himself and you will be protected with huge blockers
    Nissa of Shadowed Boughs - Has Landfall as a static ability, gaining additional loyalty each time a land comes in... making its ult to cheat creatures from your hand or reanimate them absurdly easy to pull off.
    Nissa, Who Shakes The World - Has static ability to let your Forest lands tap for an additional mana
    Tezzeret the Seeker - Has -X ability (where X is the mana cost of the target) that can pull any artifact from the deck onto the battlefield. Super useful to pull out mana rocks like Chromatic Lantern or the Moxen, or combo pieces like Isochron Scepter, Panoptic Mirror, or Amulet of Vigor.

    I'm surprised Jace the Mind sculptor was so low on this list, having witnessed its rise to infamy during the original Zendikar block and reaching a ridiculous $300+ price per foil copy at one point

    • @fwg1994
      @fwg1994 2 года назад

      Formats just got faster. You can't just plop down a planewalker and expect to grind out your opponent nearly as reliably anymore. Mind Sculptor's main strengths are that he has several relevant relevant abilities that can repeatably be used. You can always fateseal or brainstorm, and the unsummon is only a -1, meaning you can do it at least twice in a row. The ones above Mind Sculptor on this list lack his flexibility and repeatability, but have much higher raw efficiency. Jace starts to look a lot less appealing when you frame it as a 4 mana brainstorm that gains you 3 life or trades for card out of an opponent's hand. Whereas other planeswalkers come out and do something powerful immediately, but then have to wait several turns before they can accrue much more value if they even stick around that long, and that just lines up much better with how games go these days.

  • @DDTRAINER
    @DDTRAINER 2 года назад +1

    Something regarding specifically Jace and Brainstorm that many newer players don't understand right away is that you draw 3 cards then put ANY 2 cards from your hand on top. This is mostly because there are cards that specify that you have to choose from cards you drew, like Sylvan Library, to put back (though the library has an alternate cost if you keep the extra cards, that's not relevant to this comparison).

      Yeah, Ob Nixilis definitely felt like some recency bias, compared to the other options left off. Karn is probably my choice too, though Grist, the Hunger Tide is a more obvious comparison of just a better 3 mana planeswalker that sees play in fair decks.
      But my top 6 were all the same, with the top 3 even being the exact order, so can't complain too much if the flex slots in the end differ a bit.

    I play commander, not modern, so this is probably not a situation that would come up very often, but my opponent was able to pull off the Mycosynth/Karn combo against me once in a 1v1. Commander is generally a 4 player free for all, so if someone manages to get that combo into play, he has to defend himself from 3 players all attacking that planeswalker, and without a strongly defended board state, that’s kinda hard to do. But I was in a 1v1 with much smaller creatures, which is almost always a death sentence. However, I was able to cast Defense of the Heart which has a triggered ability at my upkeep where, if one of my opponents has 3 or more creatures on the field, I get to search my deck for any two creatures and put them directly into play. I happened to be running the card Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts which is a 4/4 with vigilance and protection from creatures. Karn doesn’t block triggered or static abilities so I was able to put Teysa into play and she can’t be blocked. It took me 2 more turns to break out of the Karn lock on my own and after a few more turns was able to combo off and win. All that’s to say that the Karn lock isn’t an instant lose situation if your board is well established and you can attack into the Karn for enough damage.

    Teferi Time Raveler also just mucks entire archetypes with his static ability. Suspend spells remove time counters during your upkeep, and cast if there are no time counters on them. The upkeep is not a time when a player can cast a sorcery, which means Teferi says you can't cast the spell, meaning the suspend spell just remains in exile with no further chance to cast it. Though players generally aren't looking to use the suspend ability on suspend spells. Instead, the go to method of casting them is through cascade spells, that will find a cheaper spell in your deck to cast for free. That also doesn't work with Teferi, as you can't cast sorceries while another spell is on the stack, so you can't cast the extra spell found by cascade, and it just goes back into your deck. There's a number of other spells and abilities that see play which let you cast spells as part of the resolution of the ability that get shut off. It's inherently powerful to restrict your opponent's ability to interact with you, but it also just mucks a whole bunch of decks for free on top of that.

      Time raveler is imo the worst designed magic card of all time even more egregious than oko. Tefari shuts down entire arcetypes and provides insane value. Like i remember trying to make a combat trick deck with season of growth and that 4 cost rino that drew a card when it was targeted dreadhorde arcanist to recast my giant growths it was a fun mid tier deck that got completly shut down by tefari. Oko is annoying but i can still cast my combat tricks and attempt to fight back while tefari shuts down one of the greatest parts of magic the instant speed interaction. Alot of cards break the rules of magic but tefari fundamentally changes the game way to drasticly for only 3 mana he makes the game from playing magic into playing hearthstone.

    • @fwg1994
      @fwg1994 2 года назад

      @@connoringram4948 While I don't disagree with you, I can definitely understand why he was designed as such. It's a direct callback to the original Teferi card back in Time Spiral, which had the exact same text. They needed static text for Teferi, so what better static ability to use than the ability on his original creature card. Also, while Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir was a bit of a terror in draft, owing to him mucking suspend in the suspend limited format, I don't think he ever saw much play outside of that, which may have lead WotC to believe the ability was safe to reprint. Though the bar for a splashy 3 mana planeswalker versus a triple blue 5 mana creature to be good are very different.
      Also, Oko shuts down just as many archetypes as Time Raveler does with him removing abilities from creatures. He just makes pretty much any creature based deck except blink irrelevant.

    I think Nissa, Who Shakes the World should have made the list instead of Mob Nixilis. Nissa dominated her Standard format and still sees play in a top tier Pioneer deck. The Adversary is quite good, but not as good as the hype was and it is also still pretty new and should be given more time to prove itself.
    Also, Liliana of the Veil and Jace, the Mind Sculptor are too low on your list, these were format defining cards for years. Others I would have put before new Ob are Karn Liberated and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon.

    Hey, it would be nice if, when mentioning a card, you could either put the image of the original printing of the card up, or if you could put on screen a list of the (symbols of the) sets it was printed in.
    It would give some context as to when the card was legal in standard and other frequently changing formats, rather than having to look it up later. Doesn't even have to add to your lines to record. Just having it on screen would be super helpful.
    Edit: I don't mean EVERY card. Just the cards that are part of the top 10 list that'll give enough context to any other card you mention as part of the entry.

    I have to disagree, but it depends on your playstyle.
    I like to have a swiss army knife kind of deck. I have one called Nicol Bolas, Dragon God. Here's the card's text
    1 blue 3 black and 1 red.
    Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God has all loyalty abilities of all other planeswalkers on the battlefield.
    [+1]: You draw a card. Each opponent exiles a card from their hand or a permanent they control.
    [-3]: Destroy target creature or planeswalker.
    [-8]: Each opponent who doesn't control a legendary creature or planeswalker loses the game.

    Kind of surprised to not see Karn Liberated here. I also would throw some honorable mentions to Ugin, the Spirit Dragon (another modern Tron piece and a house when it was in standard); Gideon, Ally of Zendikar (one of the few white planeswalkers to see play outside of standard looooong after rotation); and Chandra, Torch of Defiance (widely considered to be red's equivalent of JtMS).
    Also, Wren is female. "Tibalt" isn't pronounced "tee-bald," it's pronounced "tibb-alt." "Thicket" is not pronounced "ticket."
