I used the Bradley method for my second for as long as I could (never took a class, just read the book), and actually ended up taking three naps through contractions because I was so relaxed!

My grandmother was the tenth baby born in her family. There were five girls and five boys, and she was the last out of 10 children. Had she never been born, my 4 children and my 3 little grand babies would not be here, including me and my 3 siblings, and my father, his sister and her 2 children and their children. It matters. Large families matter. I wish that I had more babies.

I had one child and I'm fine with that. I don't feel the same about large families. My mum was one of 9, my husband was one of six, I was one of 3. It is each to their own, but I do think you can have too many children, and unfortunately due to how we are treating God's earth, humans need to par back a bit. Travelling around the world really opens your mind to what overpopulation looks like.

I am pregnant with baby #3 and with my second I had a high risk emergency C-section and an extension cut that caused an artery to open and bleed out (two and a half years ago now). I’d give anything to be able to have home births but both my labor’s were severely traumatic; I’m hoping that artery has at least healed up quite nicely... I have the option for early induction with epidural VBAC and praying the Lord Will allow at least for a successful VBAC heavily monitored but I also feel so paranoid about it so I’m still weighing between that and a cesarean. I agree that it’s refreshing to see other women remind others that there is always options we need to individually consider.

You have so much wisdom! “The cascade of interventions” that led to my c-section is the same reason I’ve done my own research & plan to do a home birth! I had a vaginal hospital birth the first time which was an overall positive experience but after a traumatic unnecessary c-section with my 2nd I’m not going to a hospital for birth again unless it’s an actual emergency

I admire you Lisa. If only I had had access to this kind of wisdom as a young mum (Aussie grandma here). Your measured and thoughtful approach and advice helps countless women. My four children are in their forties, and have blessed me with eight grandchildren. Sadly, all my births were Caesareans (you would call C-section) under general anaesthetic, however I do love to hear how you and other young mothers take charge, so to say, of your birthing stories. I especially agree with your one week, post partum lying-in advice - so important for bonding, healing, adapting to post-pregnancy, and so much more. You are a champion in every sense of the word (excelling at mothering, championing *choice* and *no judgment* for mothers). Have a blessed birth.

Great podcast video! I also really worked on mentally and physically preparing to stay calm and relaxed all over while pregnant and my second labor went so well... up until transition, all “pain” was more of lots of pressure and it was very simple and easy to get through. Once active pushing began I was able to push her out in 5 pushes in a really smooth way because unlike my first I wasn’t so tense and fighting it.
Also, love the new website design!!

LOVED that you mentioned having that having a positive hospital birth is 100% achievable. I gave birth to my second child 2 weeks ago and I loved my unmedicated hospital birth! Some tips I would recommend are:
-adapt a mindset that you can do it
    - hire a doula OR researching and having a very supportive/educated birth partner to advocate for you
-labor at home as long as possible but trust your instincts when to leave. Second births DO happen much faster
-Work with a midwife that can deliver at your chosen hospital

I had 2 positive hospital births. I wanted to experience a 100% natural childbirth before I died; that was most important to me. I only utilized one mantra, and that was "The pain is not greater than me, for it is in me." My first birth was medicated w doctors and nurses, and the other was a completely natural water birth with midwives. My medicated birth was still a positive experience at the time; even though I had tried to get a midwife but was too late into the second trimester. My second and last birth was the absolute best! I wish I had a midwife for both, as first birth probably would have been natural too. All things considered, I still regard it as going the way it was supposed to go under the care of doctors and nurses, who are not on the same level as midwives, as far as I'm concerned. 100% Midwifery recommendation over here!!

Love how you're keeping it real with diapering. I decided to try cloth with my ninth or tenth child (I can't remember). I found it so difficult. Granted, that was after having used disposable for all the kids before. In either case, I find that our family has had to learn to change or give up some expectations and past preferences because they just don't make sense with a larger family. I'm expecting my 12th in Nov. and it's nice to hear another mom be realistic about family life with a growing family. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I also loved the comments about advocating and researching for yourself. After being diagnosed with an auto-immune disease as well as being pregnant on top of that, I've learned that no one will care about my health as much as I will. Investing in your own health with research, alternatives, and allowing yourself to change your mind as you grow and learn, is invaluable. I had a trusted midwife who retired and sometimes having a trusted relationship with a medical provider allows you to ease up on being assertive about preferences in your care and treatment because they know you so well, but after she left, I've had to (re)learn to "speak up" about pre-natal and postpartum care. I appreciate that you encourage that as well.

I’m so happy this has all worked for you and your pregnancies. You sound very informed on your decisions. The only thing that makes me weary of lack of at least one ultrasound is the risk of birth defects such as cardiac. Not knowing baby is coming with some sort of medical issue that can require immediate attention can make for a really scary delivery at home. I’m also a bit jaded since im a picu nurse and see a lot of sick babies. Sending love.

My first birth was in an Army hospital (1971) w/an epidural and my labor was only 4 hours, but I hated the epidural. My other two (1976, and 1978) was in a hospital/birthing center, natural childbirth and it was amazing. I never feel my contractions until I am dilated to 7 centimeters, for whatever reason. I think it's because I had Braxton/Hicks contractions for so long before birthing my healthy babies. I was in active labor (that I could feel) for 3 hours w/my second and 2 hours w/my third. I had great pregnancies and births. Having babies is such an awesome time. I loved it. Great video. Congratulations.

This video popped up in my feed. We think so much alike. I had a homebirth for my last baby (my fifth). But what pushed me to do it was the fact I had group B strep. I chose to do natural methods to get rid of it and I did. I researched heavily that pregnancy and was able to have a wonderful homebirth experience. I kinda wish all my kids were birthed at home. I did have twins and they wouldn't have let me birth at home. I also studied the Bradley Method and it worked well for me and was able to avoid meds as well. I love hearing women talk about childbirth as we have so much that we can learn and share.

Lisa, have you ever heard about the copper component to having proper iron levels in the body? You cook on cast iron & eat red meat, so you don’t have an iron deficiency, your liking copper deficient. Bioavailability copper is in beef liver or beef liver capsules, and there’s some iron too. Many women with iron problems in pregnancy will take beef liver capsules & their iron levels will be most fine. Our bodies cannot properly utilize iron if we aren’t consuming bioavailable copper of som kind. Copper is also in oysters, bee pollen, oranges or orange juice, and other fruits.

I am pregnant with my 3rd and have had 2 natural births. My first was terrible and unexpected. I transition VERY quickly. My water breaks and I am ready to push! I could not make it to my hospital and delivered my first at a local hospital. I was freaked out and resisting so hard. I was given an episiotomy (unmedicated) for no reason. I ended up passing out after delivery but luckily my sweet girl was very healthy and arrived safely. With my next delivery, I prepared. I took a lot of my method of birthing from the hypnobirthing philosophy and I just spent weeks doing sort of like you. Focusing on tension and learning to relax all the muscle groups. My mantra going in to labor was just let it happen and my hands are open and my jaw is soft. The birth went so smoothly! There is always overwhelming pressure for me but it is day and night when you have your head in the game. We made it to the hospital to have my son and he was born in 45 minutes. Once I am ready to push baby out, I have struggle to breathe through. A nurse focused me last time by saying the only way he gets air is if you breathe and that was helpful. Loved hearing your thoughts and appreciate thinking of and hearing all sorts of birth scenarios. For me, I am very resistant to interventions of any kind unless there is some kind of extenuating circumstance.

Your birth with Daniel sounds exactly like my first birth (at a birth center). All in all it was an amazing experience, but long because of her head being off kilter! 42 hours but I was free to eat, drink, walk, nap, which made all the difference. I didn't do anything to prevent GBS with my first, took the antibiotics, and there was NO END to my poor baby's skin problems. Second baby, I took all the garlic, grapefruit seed extract, probiotics galore, and tested negative. Not a single diaper rash or skin issue! Yay!
My sister just had her third at home, was struggling, asked everyone to stop yapping, and from there on out she had a pain free birth! She said she didn't believe in pain free birth until she had one and didn't even know he was coming out during pushing (and he was face up!). Congratulations Lisa on a beautiful new life!!

Yes, I want to be left alone in labor too. I’m glad it’s not just me. I had natural births at the hospital and some family felt put out that we don’t invite them to sit in the waiting room asking for updates/popping in to say hi. To me, that adds stress and I would rather not have everyone’s attention on my labor. My husband was in charge of dealing with hospital staff, taking my socks on and off, sneaking me snacks, and not touching me. Haha.

I'm glad garlic, a natural antibiotic properties root, work for your group-B strep condition. My daughter died 11/1/1987 in a hospital in SE Florida. I worked pediatrics for years. So, she was the case that set precedence in testing and treating. Once the diagnosis was made, the 2 blood banks in the SE Florida area were so overwhelmed with the number of people wanting to donate for my daughter, they started taking appointments 2 weeks out stating that they needed room for blood not slated specifically for Brandis. I like that you suggest communicating and listening to the health care provider. Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I've never been pregnant(been trying for 3 years), but I do believe in what you are saying about some women having a pain free birth. I've suffered from extreme menstrual pain with vomiting, fainting (resuöting in multiple concussions) and sincerely believing that I am about to die. The only thing that ever worked would be for me to lie down and go into my own mind, and relax, just shutting every thing out. Some times I felt like I was able to completely get rid of the pain, and I think it might be the same way with the pain in labour ( but of course I can't know because I have never been through it)

Yea I struggled with first two pregnancies with iron even though I was eating super healthy. Then I tried eating liver and had liver smoothies almost daily for the last two months of pregnancy. When I had a blood test done the nurse said my blood looked great, really thick and dark and she assumed I’d been eating lots of greens. When the results came back my iron levels were really good. I was so surprised, the only change I had made to my diet was the liver and I took no supplements or iron tablets like for the previous pregnancies.

16:30 so true, I originally was going to have a hospital birth with my First... then I did more research in preparation for birth in general, and unintentionally learned more about home birth-and it just make sense to me, I felt anxiety thinking of giving birth AT the Hospital, but thinking of a home birth gave me such a warm feeling. So we made the choice to switch at 31 weeks 😂... and don’t get me wrong, it was painful, but I wouldn’t change a thing, I loved being in my home and in my own bed right after giving birth. It was peaceful. So all that to say, yes do your own research and go with what gives YOU peace. Happy mom= better birth experience.

I LOVE your simplistic, minimalistic approach & it inspired me to downsize SO MUCH with my 2nd born... I will say, the only other thing that’s a must for me is a BOUNCER!!!! Both my kids lived in that thing. (Whenever they weren’t in the carriers). This is coming from another momma who not only despises baby “gadgets” & “stations” & entertainment centers & swings but I also had the mamaroo & it was a giant waste haha. BUT... a bouncer..... is a MUST👌👍 They’re portable, CHEAP, compact, baby can sit upright & see around even before they’re able to actually “sit” but it’s not an awkward seat positioning torture device lol... just a basic safe place that comes in handy whenever you need to just sit them down quickly or for whatever reason can’t carry them that moment, also nice during showers so they can just chill in it next to the tub & see you. That really might be my #2 essential next to a carrier. You should consider getting one! Even 2nd hand

I had the auto-rock n play with my first but it was recalled. He did enjoy it though. It was nice to have a spot to set him sometimes in the tiny infant stage off the floor. This time I’m trying the Mamaroo for baby girl coming very soon. I figured if she hates it , it has good resale value. I do love baby wearing. I loved my wrap around the house and Ergo carrier. I did decide to treat myself to the Ergo Embrace this time. It’s like a hybrid between a wrap and structured carrier. I figured it would be easier when out and about then the wrap. With my twins they were early and my body was just not ready to produce and I ended up drying up no matter what I did. With my 3rd my milk didn’t come in till 3 days after and I just couldn’t keep up with his appetite. All 3 disposable diapers. Now I’m pregnant with #4 and I plan on only getting a used swing and doing cloth diapers during the day when at home and I’m preparing to bottle feed but I’m going to try to pump. I hear you about feeding. I'm a large family mom and up until about my 6th I didn't really care to know about or pursue breastfeeding, especially since I was working at the time. I've since, succesfully nursed 5 babies for at least a year. My last two children had latching issues (both had tongue and lip ties), and with COVID-19, my last son never had his released (he was born around lockdowns). They weren't extremely horrible, but his latch was poor and his suck inefficient, making breastfeeding miserable for both of us. I loved my experience breastfeeding, and pumping can work (I did it for a while with the last one that couldn't get his ties released), but eventually I went to bottle feeding formula. Just wanting to encourage you. I had built up expectations about breastfeeding that made me feel like a failure when I quit. So, I guess what I'm saying is, I encourage you to do what you have to and be realistic and give yourself a break if you don't live up to your ideal. Congrats on baby #4. I'm expecting #12 in the fall. :) I found a lactation consultant to be such a gem in working out any issues. I nearly quit my first go round with baby number 6, but having met with her, I was able to breastfeed at home and pump at work until my daughter was over a year old. So definitely get some help if you need to.

Ahhhh, the Bradley method. I did the same thing. I got the book. Read it. Practiced it. Husband participated. Well, it did not go well at all. I was screaming at the top of my lungs. When we got to the hospital I was such a floppy fish that one of the poor nurses got stuck with a needle. (I don't even remember them giving me anything.) The pain was so intense (this was my second so I was not unprepared) that there was no chance of doing their position. That being said...I'd read it again and try it again if I had another. Maybe the problem is that I had a precipitous labor under 3 hours. The method makes a lot of sense so I would try it again. I did have a successful VBAC with a natural birth...but I was unable to do the method at all. Still, perhaps it mentally prepared me somehow.
