    These cars has 2 different personalities. I don't know why everyone argues about how many hundredths of second faster the Cayman or the F-Type goes than the other one, you won't notice it. IF you were going to buy one, go the store, touch, squeeze, sit, feel, and drive the goddamn cars and see for yourself which one who makes your heart stop. Maybe someone just doesn't like the speedometer in the porsches and won't buy them for that reason, maybe someone just doesn't like looks of the Jags. Everyone has their reason. The car should fit you, you should not fit the car, that's why different people buy different cars.

      The Cayman GTS is almost like a track car that can drive on the road. It handling especially for performance is light years ahead of the market.
      A basic Cayman can be had for 40K but gives super car like performance.
      The F-type is an amazing car but not in the same league as the Cayman which is one of the best production cars ever built. It is cheap and extreme fast but also has amazing handling.
      The Cayman is all about handling speed is a secondary concern for it (even though it is still fast).

      Finally someone with sense, but its still fun to talk about cars. The car period we are currently experiencing is the best it has ever been, there are so many good options and most have their merits. Mediocrity nowadays doesn't fly like it used to, the 70,000 car is as almost good as 300,000 car and 25,000 car is as as good as 50,000, if you know what I mean.

      The RUclips algorithm brings me here again after 6 years :) I just checked for the German market what would have been the better deal and of course it is the Porsche. Cayman GTS is ca 60K Euros now, F Type ca 40K... that is a healthy difference. Of course it doesn't matter, if you are independently rich, but not everyone is ;)

      Agree. I've owned and driven a lot different Porsche models. If you're looking for a true drivers car beside the track this is actually the sweet spot. Very emotional, great transmission, not too big, best looking cayman generation (imo), low maintenance costs and a great flat six engine (Mezger engine like construction). A bulletproof, as a GTS rare model with maybe the best exhaust sound of any non-hypercar Porsche. I've owned a manual and a PDK and think the best configuration is X73 with PDK. Anyways fabulous car !!

    My wife and I followed a red V6S for about 40 miles down the A96. The Jag' has a very pretty behind and a great sound with no discernible S/charger whine. My wife was, as ever, driving briskly in an RS6 performance. The Audi was like a red -rag to the red Jag' ... so game on. The guy rinsed his Jag' .. maximum attack, sounded fab'. Thing was, my wife wasn't racing, merely driving briskly. She could have overtaken the jag' at any point but given the speeds involved we thought of the Jag as an early warning unit for mobile speed cameras. When the Jag turned away the driver gave us a big wave and flashed his hazards. He was delighted and had a great story for his mates in the pub and we didn't have a speeding ticket. Win - Win.

  • @jamesbianchi

    Great review, but I might be bias as I have a GTS and I love it.
    I didn’t cross shop the Jag as my requirements were 1) daily driver, 2) around 3,000 lb, 3) stirs my soul for looks, sound, and driving, and 4) a car that is ready for 2-3 track days a year in stock form. While the Jag can hold its own in 3 of these groups, I wanted to move away from heavy cars. The Cayman provided all these and then some.
    My GTS was a monster on the track for me last week while literally makes my chest tingle when I think about getting to drive it every day. I almost got a winter car until I thought about not getting to drive it every day and just ordered a set of winter wheels/tires.
    I literally can’t think of a way to improve upon it outside of more power, we are all junkies, right?. That said, it’s already too fast for the streets and I only really missed the power of my previous cars when I was chasing one GTR and one 996tt on the straights at the track.

      When you start looking at the 911 vs the F-Type R, both are great cars. Porsche still looks like a sporty Volkswagon vs the Jag IMO. I love 911's. For me it's the 911 4S or the F-Type R. Porsche is very refined after 50 yrs of fine tuning, I wish they had more of a road presence like the Jag. The 911 4s also costs approx 20-30k more than the F-Type R. With the 16 Jag coming out in AWD I think it's going to gain that much more value vs Porsche 911 4s. I would love a 911 GT3 or Turbo S, but then were looking at around 130k+ for the GT3 and 190k or so for the turbo. I think I have to have a 16 Jag AWD R.

    I'd pick the Cayman GTS. Basically every pro that's driven any Cayman variant agrees that it is *the* driver's car of our time. That said, I actually think the F-Type is a bit more attractive. Not that the Cayman is ugly, by any means, but the Jag just captures that classic sports car aesthetic, while also looking totally new and modern. The F-Type S manual would be hard to pass up, but the Cayman wins in the end, just for its perfectly tossable balance.

I first heard of the F-Type and thought.......Jaguar can not have made a car that is anywhere near as good as the E-Type. But for me, they have. They also created the car with the best sounding supercharged V6. It is all enough for me to put up with waiting for a month for some parts to arrive in the US (waiting on a new headliner atm). Both of these cars look beautiful, especially in red. The F-Type is arguably sexier but the Cayman is not far behind. It's gotten a lot nicer since the last version.
    As to which to buy, it really depends on what you're after. If you're like many people, who get most of their thrills from straight-line acceleration, then the F-Type will put a smile on your face every time. It had me giggling like a child when I test drove it a while back. The interior is fantastic as well, especially if you're used to BMWs. The Cayman is more for people who enjoy carving canyons, curvy freeway ramps, or days at the track. It's a different thrill, one that takes longer to master than just mashing the gas pedal. The Cayman just let's you push the car with a lot more confidence than the F-Type.
    The one problem I've had with Caymans is that they came off as being a poor man's Porsche. It's like, "this guy probably wanted a 911 but could only afford a Cayman". These days though, I wouldn't doubt it if people with money bought these GTS models to use as track toys.

    I failed to notice the quality of the jaguar cabin because my eyes where hurting from looking at the pixels on the satnav and in the instrument cluster (in year 2014), while my fingers where busy adjusting the cheap plasticy seat-controls and turning the over-assisted steering wheel. Other than that it was pretty nice to drive, and the sound of the V8 is pretty mental.

      Yeah, the GTS is probobly sensational and I'm sure F-type is great too. Would love to have either one of them. But for Sutcliffe, I think he actually have listen to the negative critics. I am Swedish and Swedish automotive magazines are always patriotic of Volvo, SAAB and Koenigsegg so I understand that Brits love British cars. But Autocar make videos for a global audience and therefor they should be better than that. Being romantic over a car is quite okay, it may even be entertaining to watch, but it must not go out over the entirety of the review and subsequent the final decision.

    I've been driving Jaguar R cars since the S Type R. I have never driven a Porsche and probably never will. When I walk up to my car it has to look good enough to make me stare at it for an extra moment before sliding in to a leather filled cabin that feels special. The car has to be exclusive enough so I won't see another one next to me at a stop light. The car has to be powerful enough to make me a little nervous. The price cannot be much more than $100k. The only car that meets that criteria is a Jaguar R car. I just traded my XKRS in for the R Coupe and I am loving it. I have never even considered a German car. There are just way too many of them buzzing around like annoying flies.

Living in Germany, where you can actually go pretty fast on the Autobahn, very few consider British cars. They prefer the reliability, superior engineering and build quality for German cars. On all objective, factual points, the Porsche is the better car. What's left is personal preference. Porsche is best by test.

    The F-type is for someone who values the fun side of driving and could care less about numbers and lap times; it's a GT car and somewhat like a muscle car. If the GTS could capture the fun side by having a lot of torque down low and louder exhaust it would be the ultimate driving machine. From a lot of reviews I've read - the GTS is brilliant and superior but sterile [aka not fun enough].

    Arrrrghh! Jaguar F-Type vs. _____ comparos are missing the whole point of the F-Type. It's a car that stands alone. A modern day interpretation of the 1960s E-Type. And an almost perfect one at that, especially with the coupe. And I can understand them using the S version of one to compare to the Cayman GTS based on price, but even that is still missing the point. The F-Type again, is a car that stands alone. It's like comparing a Van Gogh with a big flat-screen HD TV. The F-Type is not a car to be compared to others based on performance and the like. The F-Type is a work of automotive art, that can be had in regular, S, or R flavors. It's a grand touring car that can also hold it's own at a track day if the driver so chooses to partake in one with their F-Type.
    But long story short, all the F-Type comparos are missing the point. The F-Type is not just another high performance car to be compared to others. It stands alone as the almost perfect modern day interpretation of the E-Type.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 10 лет назад +1

      It pay homage to the E-type but it is nothing like the E-type.
      The E-type was a car that cheap but was one of the fastest in the world in its time. It mixed two things that should not have been possible.
      I think it was something like half the price of a Ferrari but yet it was faster and it looks amazing.
      The F-type is cheap, reasonably fast and looks good.

    • @Baby1961-i5e
      @Baby1961-i5e 10 лет назад

      bighands69 In it's day, the E-Type was by no means "cheap," even when compared to a Ferrari. And back then it was easy for a car maker like Jaguar to make the E-Type as fast as it's Ferrari 250 SWB or 250 LWB, etc. competitor because back then, the road Ferraris, even with their V-12s up front, were only making power in the 200 hp range, and Jaguar's 3.8 I6 could easily match that, and then some.
      But anyway, I think there is a little bit of a language barrier thing going on here so I'll try to be a simple about things as possible. I think 99% of everyone you ask will tell you the F-Type is a modern day interpretation of the E-Type. The head lights are different because of the different safety standards of today, but in terms of it's lines, especially in Coupe form, it get's those lines, that shape, from the lines of the E-Type. Even the taillights are sort of a modern day interpretation of the taillights from an E-Type.
      Bottom line, if there was never an E-Type, there would have never been an F-Type to base it on. Ask anyone, and 99% of people will agree that the F-Type is a descendant of the E-Type. A lot of the videos themselves speak of this. The overall shape of the F-Type, especially the fastback shape of the coupe, is pure E-Type. Asking people, watching all the vids specifically about the F-Type, and even it's wiki page will probably tell you the F-Type was inspired by the E-Type.
      The price of the E-Type at the time compared to the Ferrari 250 (again, it's prime competitor in terms of Ferrari) has nothing to do with the fact that the F-Type was inspired aesthetically by the E-Type. And again, the Ferrari of the time that everyone pictures in their mind, the 250 California Spyder LWB, only made 237 hp with it's V-12 up front, and the E-Type, using Jaguar's tried and true 3.8L I6 easily made way more power than that.
      But again, price, and it's comparison to the Ferrari have nothing to do with the F-Type being inspired by the E-Type. I mean come on, it's the "F-Type." There was the D-Type racecar that inspired the looks of the E-Type, so it's only natural that the F-Type's shape and lines were inspired by the E-Type. The same classic shape that could be drawn using only 3 basic lines. The classic long hood and short rear overhang of the F-Type coupe and convertible are totally design cues taken from the E-Type.
      Again, all I can say is ask around, watch videos solely about the F-Type, and read articles about it and they'll all mention the F-Type was inspired by the E-Type. An homage in the way it was styled. The could have gone with any number of different shapes that look more futuristic if Jaguar wanted another go-fast GT car. But they chose to use the name F-Type and have it's shape and lines inspired by the E-Type.
      That's all I can say really. And even though it's totally subjective thing, I think you'll find it hard to find any evidence that suggests the F-Type was not inspired by the E-Type, making it a de facto homage to the E-Type.

    • @rousseau327
      @rousseau327 10 лет назад +1

      The F-Type definitely isn't a car that stands alone just because it's paying homage to the E-Type. Otherwise the SLS is a stand alone car because it pays homage to the 300SL Gullwing. Doesn't make any sense.

    • @Baby1961-i5e
      @Baby1961-i5e 10 лет назад

      Maxawe Some ewt415 I also consider the SLS AMG a stand alone car in a sense, but the 300SL gullwing cars were never as iconic as the E-Types, which were based on the D-Type racecar. When someone thinks classic, long hood, short rear overhang car, they think E-Type. I'm more ok with SLS comparos because with the 6.3, the backbone, etc. it's not only a car that pays homage to the 300SLs of the '50s, it's also a really great car performance-wise in it's category. Hence, all the SLS GT3 racecars out there. To my knowledge, there are no F-Type GT3 cars racing in any FIA sanctioned series. (But just like E-Types were used in GT racing back in the '60s, which people can see every year at the Goodwood Revival, it would be cool to see some F-Type GT3 cars competing in FIA Blancpain GT racing or FIA WEC racing or ACO [Nurburgring 24 Hours] sanctioned GT3 racing).
      The F-Type is not just another sports car. Look up videos where it's designers speak about it and they all say they were going for an E-Type look, especially the rear glass area on the hardtop. The designers couldn't just put E-Type style headlights on it because of modern day regulations, but they did what they could and came out with a car that can be considered a great modern day interpretation of the E-Type.
      And it's way more of a GT car than just another sports car. If they wanted it to be an out and out sports car, they would have put a dual-clutch automated-manual in it or offered a stick shift option. But no. They put an 8-speed automatic in it with manual override.
      And speaking of the SLS, I've amassed enough disposable income to buy myself a treat after 30 years in the aerospace biz. I've already contacted AMG's in-house customization center (because the SLS is at the top of my list right now, followed closely by a new 911 GT3 with the cool way pulling back on both paddles at the same time is like putting the clutch in and letting go is like dropping the clutch instead of just putting the car in neutral which is what would happen in other paddle shift cars, and an Aston Martin refurbished previous Vanquish with a stick-shift, which Aston Martin now offers to do the conversion for customers in house, and not have to deal with the clunky paddle shift box they came with) and they told me the exact car I want is doable. An SLS with all of the go-fast bits from a Black Series (upgraded motor, lighter backbone, suspension, titanium exhaust, etc.) but with none of the aero (like the boy-racer looking fixed mini GT3 rear wing). So basically the gorgeous lines of a "regular" SLS AMG, but a Black Series underneath the bodywork. Silver with a red interior, and black or steel-look brake calipers instead of the tacky yellow ones. It'll be a one of a kind, COPO Camaro type of car. I'm gonna call again and see what they can do, because I'd imagine it would just be an electronics change to make it have that same feature as the new 911 GT3, pulling back on both paddles at the same time is like putting the clutch in, and letting go is like dropping the clutch (for some "hooligan" behavior). It is an automated-manual dual-clutch transmission, afterall.
      And yes, the SLS is also a modern day interpretation of the 300SL gullwing door cars of the '50s, but with many more liberties taken, in my opinion. The F-Type droptop looks like a modern E-Type droptop (long hood, short rear deck lid) and the hardtop has that C-pillar rearward, rear glass and bodywork that is totally E-Type. But again, I still think it "stands alone" because of all the attention to detail the designers put in to make it a modern E-type day, 8-speed automatic grand touring car. And yes the SLS "stands alone" in a way, but despite the awesome gullwing doors and the way it is an awesome homage to the 300SLs of the '50s, I'm more ok with it going head to head with other cars because even being the homage car that it is, it is also a very capable sports car from Mercedes, that can be had in AMG, AMG GT, and Black Series flavors.
      And remember, this is an opinion thing guys, so there's no need to bite peoples' heads off when they express their opinion, and turn into burn-offs like so many threads do. Let's keep it civil. And there was no smoking of anything besides cigarettes and nicotine vaporizer. :)

For real world driving my advice is if you live in the UK then buy 4WD or AWD, unless all u do is City driving, its much safer and you can boot it anywhere whatever the weather. Rwd, save it for track days

    The Cayman gts is brilliant you can keep the 911 I'd take the Cayman every single time, hmmmm what about the F type I love it the best Jag Coupe since the E type. I would have a hell of time trying to decide which one I'd have, lol sod it both

    My hormones would prefer the Jag but durability, drivability, endurance, resale value and peace of mind, Cayman the obvious choice. For a decade I own a Boxster.

    I would personally get the Cayman IRL because of that you can get quite cheap used ones now, some 15-20 k cheaper than a used jag (USD)

    These 2 cars remind me of the M3 E30, it's all about Handling, feeling and balance between the engine and the chassis.

    I guess he is right. The Cayman have maybe just that more..

    I'd go for the Jag, the sound is incredible and the design outstanding! Porsche is boring

      Hey, ViSTiE, the reviewer admitted that the microphone was not up to snuff in the Cayman so how can you rate the sound without having heard a fair comparison?

    Having driven the Cayman GTS and Cayman S back to back I must say the GTS is where my money would go. It's so much sharper you wonder how they did such a great job. Hmmm time for an upgrade I think. The F-Type is great but there is plenty of time for a Jag when I'm 65.

    Although the base prices are similar, I'm willing to bet the 'as tested' prices of the cars in this video put the Porsche 50% higher than the F-Type. I priced out a GTS on the Porsche configurator and easily got to $100k with the options mentioned in the video (ceramics, TV diff, sport seats, and a few options). That's F-Type R money.

    This Porsche.. Incredible that when you have it in front of you, it looks more beautiful, and the sound.. Nothing sounds like in the video. The Jaguar is just marvelous, I've seen one and it looks very different from the others sports cars, and that's make its personality.
    But I'm a Porsche lover, so I would choose the GTS.. with a short trip in the F-type before ;)

    Jag looks great, but so does the Cayman. Jags weight would always bother me knowing it was holding the car back from even more. The GTS however is focused and tighter.

    the cayman is lighter and faster turns better. its obviously the more capable sports car. if only jag cut
    out all the flab and drilled the chassis it would then stand a chance.

    Even on a race track I couldn't drive my 993 like that (too chicken). The only right answer for me is to have both in my garage because they are both 'the best' in their own ways.
