    Charles Batta: The Trailblazing Strongman
Charles Batta holds a mysterious place in the history of strongmen. He began his training at the young age of fifteen and rose to lead the "La Patriote de Lille" team, a distinguished gymnastics company. Endowed with muscular strength inherited from his father, Batta chose to dedicate his life to weightlifting.
This pioneer in feats of strength created acts that many other performers would imitate, including his unique way of lifting weights. In a café in Lille, he amazed the audience by lifting three 20-kilogram weights attached to a car axle, all with one arm. He was a member and director of the Bazola circus troupe, where he showcased his ability to balance heavy objects from a chair.
Among his achievements, he notably lifted 106 kilograms with one arm, although specific details of his technique are not fully recorded. Desbonnet, in "The Kings of Strength," highlighted Batta's extraordinary skill with weights. One of his most surprising and dangerous acts involved the "unwinding" technique, balancing on six sharp daggers while lifting 90 kilograms. The risky nature of this act led some spectators to call for its removal, fearing a possible fatal outcome.
The "unwinding" technique, which involves lifting the weight from the ground, is a precursor to contemporary Turkish get-ups. From a lying position, the lifter would sit up and execute a kind of plank. Using one hand and the opposite foot for support, they would perform a bridge-like lift, unwinding the weight until fully standing.
