  • Bopie's is starting off the new year with a new two-part lesson for our aspiring gem cutters from award-winning gem cutter Michael! In this video, Mike breaks down all of the different parts of a gem faceting diagram to the last detail, so that even brand new cutters can understand everything that's needed to make a certain gemstone cut happen.
    If you are new to the gem cutting hobby or if you aspire someday to provide professional gem cutting services, or if you were simply out hiking recently and stumbled across a pretty colored gemstone and were thinking about all the possible gem cutting shapes you could make with Dremel, then this video may help give you some pointers.
    As always, if your travels take you near me or our store, please drop in, we would love to talk to you about this unique trade. If you are interested in learning new gem cutting machine prices or you want to know which cutters currently have used gem cutting and polishing machines for sale, just ask as I am always happy to answer any questions you may have.
    If you are thinking about attending a gem cutting school to take more formal gem cutting lessons or even complete Gem Cutting 101 courses, I would recommend you first search for a Gem Cutting Club or Lapidary Club near you as they will have the best information on what is available in your area.
    We're always open to hearing from you about ways we can improve our tutorials! Please let us know in the comments how we can help you be on your way to mastering the art of gem cutting.

    This is the second time I have watch this video, Tomorrow I will be on my journey of cutting my first stone. I thought to myself I should review Mr. Bopie's faceting diagram and to my understanding the chart much better from the last time, I realized I will be wasting so much of my gem from the design I chose to make because the gem is way to big. Thank you for this very important overview on understanding a faceting Diagram. I enjoy your videos very much please keep them coming. Thank you for all your help.

    Thanks for another great video. I was glad to see that I am not the only one that doesn't understand the volume calculation and how it can be used. I have used it to get a rough idea of the "fatness" of similar designs. More volume equals more weight.

  • @justinmynatt896
    @justinmynatt896 5 месяцев назад +3

    I use the Vol/W^3 measurement to compare yields between different designs of the same shape. IE I can compare a bunch of 1.2 L/W, 1.54 RI Oval designs and see immediately which will yield the most. Granted the color saturation of the stone (thus the depth of the pavilion) is more important than small variances in yield so I tend to look at the Vol/W^3 last.

    • @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry
      @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry  3 месяца назад +1

      ah yes, I see. That's a good idea, so if I was cutting an oval for example, the higher the volume ratio, the higher the yield would be. But, for large stones, I am generally cutting a relatively less expensive material, so a little extra yield isn't a significant concern for me. However, if I was cutting a relatively expensive stone, such as Tsavorite, or a larger Sapphire, then I can see where your way would be of great benefit. Thanks.

      Often you will find gemstone rough for sale that is priced per Gram. So you need to know that 5 Carats equals 1 Gram. So if the rough is $5 per Gram, it is $1 per Carat.

    Does drawing with 1.72 R.I. work with diamond which has R.I.of 2.4?

    • @mikesackos2208
      @mikesackos2208 3 года назад

      I am not sure I understand. If you mean can you use a diagram designed for an R.I of 1.72 to cut a gemstone of a higher R.I., without changes. Probably. In general you can use a diagram to cut a stone in a Higher R.I., but in general, you can not use a diagram for one R.I. to cut a lower R.I. without changing the angles.

      Keith, I rarely use Gemcad anymore. It is no longer being supported. In fact, the creator, Robert Strickland, has placed the software in the public domain and you can download it and use it for FREE. I use GCS or Gem Cut Studio. It is simple to change the R.I. in GCS as it's one of the dropdown options.

    Does the L / W ratio determine the size of the stone?

    • @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry
      @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry  3 года назад

      In part. The size (carat weight) can be estimated using the volume calculation, which I tried to do in my video of cutting large Mali Garnet. Width Cubed which is width x width x width is one component. You also need the specific gravity of the material and the fraction from the gem design.

    Hi Boppie, found your video really informative keep it going with these brilliant videos.
    I particularly interested to do emerald cut for emeralds but some how i found some emeralds which have very less depth how ever length into width ratios are good enough, SO can i able to cut those Emeralds with less depth on the same chart which is available on internet or i need to do special depth calculations to implement those charts for cutting or they still work on less depth stones. i hope you get my quetion

    • @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry
      @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry  3 года назад

      If the emerald is cut to shallow, it will have a 'window' effect and light will pass through it and not be reflected back. That affects the brilliance of the stone.
