When farmer Dave Stevens was killed in Zimbabwe ten days ago, farmers in the Macheke area left their farms for Harare for fear of further attack from veterans' groups.
On Monday, some 40 families decided to return - much to the relief of the workers who had remained on the farms and found they had nowhere else to go.
The whole community in Macheke is in shock over the killing of local farmer Dave Stevens more than a week ago.
They're still very upset by the turn of events but argue their crops can't wait.
Many of them are tobacco farmers and are keen to try to get as much as possible of their tobacco crop ready for export when the sales begin on Wednesday.
Mick and Helena Rose are fourth generation farmers in Zimbabwe whose whole family are involved in farming.
The Rose's crop, weighing in at over 100 tonnes could be worth up to 180-thousand U-S dollars.
Because the Zimbabwe dollar is so weak at present, Mick Rose plans to sell the lowest quality first in the hope that things will get better and the price will rise again.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
(Question) "How did the workers react when you came back?
(Answer) "They were pleased to see me obviously they are very apprehensive. The whole area is tense they now that farmer Stevens has been killed. They know that other guys have been beaten up. It's not a happy state of affairs at the moment. They are trying to get life back to normal as soon as possible."

    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I didn't think it would get to this kind of violence. There was tension in this area for a good four weeks. But nothing could have made us think it could get to this, we are devastated."
SUPER CAPTION: Helena Rose, Tobacco Farmer
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I am sceptical at the moment about the sale of the tobacco because the state of the Zimbabwe dollar is not conducive to selling our tobacco early. "

Im a black Zimbabwean. If you are aZimbo you are my brother. Period. Land is an issue the government failed to handle.
Someone else needs to do it better. We need all Zimbabweans to farm land. Black and white together. Its the only way to peace and prosperity.

@Water Johono We now have 300,000 black farmers who are smallholder farmers. They now produce more than what the white farmers used to do. The hopeless lie that these white farmers were the best in the region has been disproved. I feel sorry for Zimbabweans who fail to see that we have crossed over from being bullied by whites to being people who can manage our own economy.

These farmers are fools for returning to Zimbabwe, knowing that another white farmer was murdered there. As soon as their farm is prosperous again, the government will seize the farm.

I can't imagine how heart aching it would be to lose land - similar to the land lease issues in Fiji.

You do know their grandparents stole the land from the original owners right? Not centuries ago either....please, give me a break, how about I come steal something of yours, then hand it down to my grand children while my children prosper off of it and your children suffer see how “heart aching” you will feel

@@mellymel6624 but seriously if we were to weigh the sides I would suppose people suffered less before the land reform than during this current situation ...nomatter why the people voted no to the land reform....The government should have given land ownership to the people so that they could receive loans from banks so that they could at least stand a chance as commercial farming is complicated...i also believe we would have stood a better chance if the white farmers only lost half of the farms and were instructed to assist our black farmers as they possessed generations of farming knowledge and financial powers due to generations of unequal distribution of wealth.....

When Malaysia got its independence, we did not drive the british planters out. Correct ne if i n wrong. We learned from them to cultivate large scale plantations as well as small holdings...be it rubber or oil palm. Big mistake by Mugabe...change do not occur overnight. He should have a cultivated a collaborative enviroment between white n blacks of course with incentives so that both sides cud prosper.

Grace, the Zimbabwe government used to earn millions and millions of dollars every year because of your farmers selling tobacco to the world.
      Now that has gone.
That is why Zim is poor.
You cannot import things without dollars.
You can't have dollars without selling things to the world.
