A splendid recording of the GREAT
Widor, driving his enormous Cavaille-Coll through his deuxieme
symphonie at a leisurely pace, as
befits the work. Incredible fidelity for a 90-year-old recording performed by an 88-year-old organist. Dr. Fred M. Ussery, III
Dr Fred, is there a source for this recording at all that we may verify its authenticity?
This is the first version, with the Gigue-Fugato as fourth movement instead of Salve Regina.
There are kids talking in the background, which probably should annoy me, but it doesn't. It's kind of cute actually, and, in addition, I am grateful that young children are being exposed to genuinely good, timeless music. Perhaps one of them will become the next Widor or Cavaille-Coll.
I find it very annoying, particularly on a recording. The child's noise distracts every time. And if the child or their parents would be interested in this music, they would at least try to whisper. To me it seems like tourists intruding into a church, whose doors the organ player forgot to lock. Maybe they find the "background music" nice. But at least they are coughing like professionals.
@@emilrousseau8060 Irritatingly, this happens a lot for me too. In the worst cases, people bring dogs and they start barking during Pott's Empyrean! Irritating.
Superb - but it would be great and proper to list the perfofmer.
Who is playing?
I feel a loneliness of a hundred years
REMEMBER - This recording was made on 1932, only a few months
prior to Widor's retirement as titular
organist of the parish of Saint Sulpice, ending a 64-year-long reign
as "provisional" organist of the parish. In 1932, the recording of
large pipe organs was rare, and
usually a technical disaster. Not
only was the recording equipment
primitive, the reproducing equipment in homes was much worse. This occurred during a world-wide financial DEPRESSION.
