Yu Yu Hakusho is still one of my favorite shows to this day, and every scene you mentioned were always the most striking and memorable to me, it's cool to see who it stemmed from and what they went on to do.
Shinbo is by far my favorite anime director, so it's really cool to see someone finally tackle the man's early work. It's interesting to see where he came from, and to watch his unique aesthetics evolve over time. I still remember how jarring it was to go from Yamamoto Yoko 1 to 2, and seeing how much more Shinbo the second OVA was. Also, I'm really looking forward to your thoughts on Tenamonya Voyagers, since that's my personal favorite of his 90s work that I've seen.
I....cant.....stand post 2000 shinbou; the guy has no restraint nowadays. Obviously he's always been charismatic with his animation directing but at least back then there was purpose; there was visual flow and coherency in what he did. After a while, everything started to become style for the sake of style and it started becoming annoying to me around the time soul taker came to be. Colors, colors, colors; YOU GET SEIZURE INDUCING COLORS; YOU GET SEIZURE INDUCING COLORS; YOU ALL GET SEIZURE INDUCING COLORS YAAAAAYYYYYY!!. He lost a lot of what i thought was great about his sensibilities with framing and creating tension through shading and back ground manipulation. He could truly convey emotion and subtlety through his animation even when it was being bombastic. Now everything is visually loud and in your face and pointless. Other talented people with distinct styles are able to make their style fit the situation and out the best in the narrative oooohhhh but shinbou; he's gotta make the situation fit his style; everything has to be clearly him. Everything has to be irreverent and maddening....ugh. Unlike yutaka nakamura who continues to evolve in interesting ways (the guy's like wine) shinbou is more akin to milk; he literally spoiled himself over the years and now i just cant stand his works. Im not a fan of his style in the monogatari series, which in my opinion has some good points but is fucked over by schizophrenic presentation. The Kizumonogatari is the only time i felt that i was actually watching a story play out and the visuals didnt turn me off.
I actually felt Monogatari was a good example of a series where style became substance. If only because 90% of the time it's two or three characters having a casual conversation, and there's only so much you can do to make it visually engaging, so unusual and stylish things that catch the eye are quite appreciated. At least it's hard to argue the fact that such "schizophrenic" presentation certainly made it a lot more interesting than it would have been otherwise. I would guess Kizumonogatari felt different for a completely different reason: 1) it has a lot less dialogue and a lot more action, 2) it has a more complex, detailed plot than nearly any of the TV episodes. It's obvious that it would feel more engaging and full of substance-there is, after all, more substance. On the other hand, I don't feel like 3-gatsu no Lion has benefitted from Shinbo's involvement at all. It doesn't look like a story that requires such an unconventional visual style to elevate it above the original medium, and it could have been more than adequately handled by somebody from e.g. A-1 Pictures (like the dude who directed Erased or KimiUso-script issues aside, their direction is marvelous).
Tokyo Ghoul is on my 'to watch' list. Haven't started yet, due to too many shows i have to finish TwT (shame on me for stopping halfway through shows and starting new ones, effectively increasing the list of things i have to finish, *sobs* )
Props to The Davoo for this one. I especially liked the cuts for Detatoko Princess. While you're talking about Shinbo's influence on it, all the cuts are classic Shinbo, and then, when you recommend it as 90's fantasy comedy fun, all the cuts suddenly reminded me of Slayers. Pretty neat trick.
i love these analytical long videos based on directors/shows/medium as whole and industry. the longer the better in some cases. i like how you always bring my attention to details to things i wasnt aware exsisted or ever saw before. keep up the good work man
oh man thank you so much digibro, I know you mentioned what series you thought were worth looking into, and there are some that I'm REALLY excited for, but because of my 90's aesthetic and general love for obscure things I just feel an intense need to watch like all of these, especially the OVAs LOLOLOL. MAL's "currently watching" list is going to cry at me again, though, my personal account ratio is off the fucking wall OTL (no but really, I am so amazed that you brought up almost like 90% series I had never heard of before, that's actually a really cool...feeling, I guess?)
I really like the lopping off of portions of the screen to hard focus on segments of action or interest. It's a pretty damn good way of giving an almost baroque quality framing to dramatic sequences. Although it seems he's molded it in such a way as to promote even more mundane scenes. ... Neat.
I fell in love with The SoulTaker's and Petit Cossette's aesthetics long before I ever heard of Shinbo, and since then he has become my favourite director. Thank you for a bunch of 90's OVA recommendations I would like to watch. I looked forward to this video since I saw that you had watched a ton of 90's OVAs with Shinbo on MAL. :D
Man, I really like these videos you do that go through the history of a director/anime series. I learned so much more about Shinbo than I knew before from this, and I think I respect him a lot more as a director. Can't wait for the next one.
Damn, yes, this is exactly the calibre of work that convinced me to support you. Looking forward to the next part. (Especially your take on SoulTaker, which I fondly remember as a hot mess in all the best possible ways.)
aww man, i had no idea that Shinbo had influence in the Yu yu hakusho episodes during the Dark Tournament arc. i vaguely remember them from my childhood. but when you spoke of them and the images were on screen, it was like " of course! I remember this!" it was probably the most nostalgic moment you caused in your videos recently for me. ( besides your earlier Yu yu hakusho video) i mean, i had watched Yu yu hakusho way back when, probably on toonami in the 2000's when it was dubbed. but at that time I was too young, and didnt know that i had been watching anime, and kinda wish i had known better. well, i was watching Toonami because of my older brother, I wish that it would have left a better impression on me. whatever, anyway, very interesting video on Shinbo's history! I remember you talking about wanting to do a grand telling of his history being he is one of your favorite anime directors. I'm ready for whatever you got in store, and for whatever you have in the works. If this isnt obvious, i will probably appreciate any talk on later 90's/ early 2000's talk of anime that might have been on toonami. even though i still hold a grudge against myself for not getting into anime during my youth despite my history, i was probably 22 or 23 when i got into it! i'm 25 now : (
I've never heard of this guy and will probably not care about him really, but anytime you make a video I'm on that shit. You are literally the only person who could hold my interest even if I normally wouldn't care.
wow I didn't realize how much shinbo has influenced so many different animies. I really really appreciate your work. I see so much love for the art that it just makes me excited to watch a video of a person who I never heard of. I hope you read this, because I think you're super cool and I hope nothing for the best out of you.
About Yu Yu Hakusho, didn't some of the styles exist in the rest of series? Also, isn't that moment in 3:18 was written by the mangaka of the original manga? Why would they be attributed to Akiyuki Shinbo? I'm not sure if he should get the credit without checking out the difference between the episodes he directed and the episodes he didn't. Didn't know Akiyuki Shinbo is widely recognized tho. Usually saw ppl talk about Gen Urobuchi when they talk about Madoka Magica.
I'm very happy to see such a high praise of the battle with Hiei's second use of The Dragon of the Darkness flame. For some reason a huge chunk of people think it's very poorly animated and drawn to achieve the fluidity. I see it as more simplified to allow fluidity yes, but also a particular art style. It's awesome.
15:21. You're kurwa right it was popular in some parts of Europe. Back in the 90s that show was one of few reasons why kids watcher Polonia 1 TV channel. Other reasons included: - Tōshō Daimosu known as General Daimos. Also known as the legendery mecha transformation EVERYBODY KNOWS. - Yattāman translated as simply Yattaman. Liked for the main Miss Dorombo and her getting naked often for no good reason - Captain Tsubasa translated as Captain Hawk or Play Ball if I recall correctly. Anime about soccer, activity which pretty much every kid did when outside. There was no way this anime couldn't take off in Poland. - Majokko Megu-chan translated as Bia - The Magic Challange. The main protagonist was something even guys liked. - Yattodetaman translated as In Calendar Kingdom. Kinda liked... just like Yattaman. - Dashu Kappei translated as simply Gigi. This show was probably first exposition of anime panty shots to young poles. - As mentioned Kaiketsu Zorro as Zorro. Some people watched it just for Opening alone. It still rocks to this day. - Tiger Mask. Bloody hardcore wrestling for the sake of orphaned children. Manly as FUCK! If you want to have better insight into Polish anime fans who grew up in 90s then those shows are your good indication on what you're dealing with.
Went to sleep, woke up to my residences fire alarm going off, and had to stand outside in the cold for 30 minutes, but it's worth coming back inside and seeing a new digi video :)
Wow, really enjoyed this video Digi! I'm very familiar with the Yu Yu Hakusho series and you definitely captured a lot of the interesting and odd aspects of that show in this video. Many of the most memorable episodes from that series it seems were Shinbo's episodes! I'll definitely be checking out quite a few of the other anime you mentioned in this video. Really love that 90s anime style, and in particular it seems I like Shinbo's style.
I hope you go a bit into his hentai career in part 2. I'm not a hentai fan but I had to watch them when I found out about his involvement, and seeing them was a bit of a revelation to me. It's truly the missing gap between SoulTaker and Petite Cossette and explains a lot about what sort of excesses he was actually backing away from when he joined studio SHAFT. I'm SO glad you are making this series! He's my favorite director and I was kinda working on something like this a few years ago, just an overview of his early career that I could post to my blog or something, but I kept getting sidetracked. You, right now, are literally fulfilling my goals that I gave up on, so keep it up and make me proud!
+Digibro you don't like/haven't watched Sailor Moon digi? its 200 eps but there are almost no wasted episodes in the grand scheme of things. Also Season 3, Sailor Moon S, is probably one of the best seasons in all of anime.
Oh man. I really hope Shinbo in the 00's is a multi-parter. So much anime. Soul Taker was my introduction to Shinbo, and man, did it prep me for his other works I've watched.
Shinbo is a fucking god. I will consciously fanboi him and hyperbolize his greatness because his greatness fucking demands it. Awesome video, great idea for a series.
That was awesome. I went in knowing basically nothing about the subject at hand and still felt really interested in the visuals and your in-depth analysis of them. A little suggestion, though: when you're about to stop talking about/showing one series, put the title back in the corner again before moving on. A lot of these had somewhat long or obscure names and I had to go back to find the title of what you were talking about to research more about it.
So now that it's all gone did anyone manage a good backup?? I feel like tehre's a 1 or 2 part video about another director that didn't get preserved. These directory reviews are something that actually got me to watch anime and be inspired by it and now I can't find the physical counterpart to the video that exists in my head... does anyone at least have a list of video titles so I can figure out all the anime figureheads he documented over the years?? Then I could just look up all their work myself.
I think Digibro mentioned once, in one of his gaming video, that he is far more enthusiastic about doing all sorts of different videos rather than stick to a particular series. He probably was very excited to do that one first episode, enough to consider doing a series, but then it probably stopped being interesting to him. A pity, but hey, with all the content he produces I can't complain.
He made three videos on how to recognize a great anime in just one episode and I think it's not intended to be an ongoing series. He shared a screenshot of thumbnails for his next four video transcripts and it seems like another character designs video is coming out soon (on Gurren Lagann-- I read the 3 pixel high text)
I'm interested in the transfer of directorial tricks between Gainax and SHAFT. Like were moments of Karekano where I thought "oh gainax did it first" (would have t rethink that after this video) and TTGL was Gekidan Inu Curry's first credit.
I'm noticing that a lot of the shots that utilize heavy shadows and distinct, stylized monochromatic color swaps on the characters and background bear a distinct resemblance to a lot of the shots in the Jojo anime. I can't help but think Shinbo's work is what David Productions drew inspiration from.
I never knew that the Director of SHAFT those famous shows worked on Yu Yu Hakusho. No wonder the Dark Tournament arc was such a badass part of the show. Such an awesome anime + manga.
Ah, I've seen a bit of Demon Hunter Yohko some months ago. Yeah, kind of hard to get into for the reasons you stated. But if anything this video makes me want to go back to Yu Yu Hakusho.
And I'm rewatching it. Nice to know who directed my favourite trippy darkness flame episode. Whenever Hiei shouts the name of his attacks it just cracks me up.
Chicken Permission I haven't checked out the sub to a great extent, I've been watching the dub. So far it's pretty good, but I hope the voices get a little less cheesy.
That evil doctor fight was the first episode I ever watched all the way through (because I usually caught the end of an episode or I didn't have the remote) of an anime other than the 4Kids shows. And I have to say, its what got me into anime. Just that episode alone.
Your videos are insightful. Can you talk about his early works of Kon Satoshi too? Saw the videos about his films in Every Frame a Painting. But didn't know about his early works.
Hey Digi, have you ever considered doing an After Dark video explaining your writing process? Even if it's an unedited, several hour long video (sort of in the vain of that one editing video you did) I would definitely be interested in watching something like that. Anyways, great video as always man, I'm looking forward to part 2!
I'm relatively new getting insight into the anime industry and apprently the only work I've seen from all of these is Yu Yu Hakusho and goddamn did I love all of those things in YYH. I planned to watch the Monogatari series but I sure as hell will try other of his works, especially interested in Detatoko Princess, it reminds me a lot of Slayers.
The manga, and at least the 2011 version, yes, I plan to watch the 99 shortly, which had some interesting stuff that sometimes outdoes the 2011 one in its beginning.
Digibro It would be very interesting too, considering both Imaiishi and Trigger are very active right now, and Kazuya Tsurumaki is in talks of directing an original series at Khara, based on another Animator Expo short (finally doing work outside of Eva).
Please do! They have so many awesome aspects to explore! There's also a lot of animation hallmarks to cover, and sometimes, I feel like their works are quite underappreciated for their comic timing, energy and visual aesthetics.
Shinbo bathrooms: The only bathrooms that could also be a house.
jesus christ i cant believe you made that entire spreadsheet just to show us.. ur passion for this stuff is nuts
Digibro, capable of doing more work then 95% of youtube in one video...
ASniperFanboy ya what a fuckin' nerd
ASniperFanboy and I love it!
holy shit, he directed almost all of my favorite episodes of Yu Yu Hakusho
Yu Yu Hakusho is still one of my favorite shows to this day, and every scene you mentioned were always the most striking and memorable to me, it's cool to see who it stemmed from and what they went on to do.

Tenamonya is probably my favorite of his 90s stuff as well, besides the Yuu Yuu Hakusho episodes.

i'm so blown away by his work. i'm so happy you made this video, my eyes couldn't be happier. holy fuck
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS GOD BLESS YOU
~Sees Yuyu Hakusho in the thumbnail~
*OH FUCK YES.*
You're a genius bro.
If it isn't the big D himself
Dont exagerate
Please more videos like this! I love learning about directors/animators/studios and how they got to where they are today.
I can't believe how frequently Digi can produce such high quality and condensed content at such a fast rate
2:53 Shinbo's intense single-coloring reminds me of German expressionist films
Thank you, Digibro. I love Akiyuki Shinbo. Great that you're doing a video on him.
blown away at the production quality great work. the fact that i sat through 23 minutes without getting bored is impressive.
Yu yu hakusho... back when Pierrot still cared about stuff.
JD002 and the twelve kingdoms (maybe?)
LunarScarf90 Haven't seen it (though i plan to), but i heard good things about it.
Tokyo Ghoul season 2 is really creative.
FullmetalGhoul ...
Tokyo Ghoul is on my 'to watch' list. Haven't started yet, due to too many shows i have to finish TwT (shame on me for stopping halfway through shows and starting new ones, effectively increasing the list of things i have to finish, *sobs* )
This reminds me that there are a lot of SHAFT shows I need to actually catch up on...
Ive been catching up on some of the lesser known(to me at least) stuff lately, lot of good stuff plenty of Shinbogasms to be had.
Pretty neat trick.
i love these analytical long videos based on directors/shows/medium as whole and industry. the longer the better in some cases. i like how you always bring my attention to details to things i wasnt aware exsisted or ever saw before.
keep up the good work man
Absolutely love Shinbo's work, and its great to see the earlier stuff he's worked on.
Hope you keep going with these videos!
This. This kind of work is why I started watching your videos, and why I respect your ability for analysis. Good stuff.
I got enraptured in the editing ever so often and had to rewatch parts Thank you Davoo
oh man thank you so much digibro, I know you mentioned what series you thought were worth looking into, and there are some that I'm REALLY excited for, but because of my 90's aesthetic and general love for obscure things I just feel an intense need to watch like all of these, especially the OVAs LOLOLOL. MAL's "currently watching" list is going to cry at me again, though, my personal account ratio is off the fucking wall OTL
(no but really, I am so amazed that you brought up almost like 90% series I had never heard of before, that's actually a really cool...feeling, I guess?)
You are a God among men. You are probably the #1 anime critic/expert I know of. The sheer amount of research you do is staggering.

Digibro, hardest working creator on RUclips! Appreciate the vast amount of depth and time you put into this. Looking forward to part 2.
To think on the work and investigation behind this video sacares me. Just, amazing.
"So I made a gigantic spreadsheet"
Yea gonna have to stop you there. I'll be back after I've recovered from my mind being blown.
Damn, yes, this is exactly the calibre of work that convinced me to support you. Looking forward to the next part. (Especially your take on SoulTaker, which I fondly remember as a hot mess in all the best possible ways.)
I love your videos and wish you could make them more often. If I had a job, I'd donate, but as it stands, you have my full unwavering support.
aww man, i had no idea that Shinbo had influence in the Yu yu hakusho episodes during the Dark Tournament arc. i vaguely remember them from my childhood. but when you spoke of them and the images were on screen, it was like " of course! Just rewatched your YYH video the other night, so this was a cool follow-up, given your mention of the Dark Tournament Animation style under Shinbo.
You made me watch the full 23 minutes, good job.

Man.............This guy is way better than most Modern directors. Like by fucking MILES.
They need to git gud.
I'd like to know how much creative liberty they are given, and if we're missing some great artists for playing safe
Yeah look up Natoshi Shida he is AMAZING.
He is a modern director.
Now I know why I love Petite Cossette. You've enriched my appreciation!
brah. I like videos like this. you do an amazing job of really highlighting the anime industry. I'd like to see more like this.

Went to sleep, woke up to my residences fire alarm going off, and had to stand outside in the cold for 30 minutes, but it's worth coming back inside and seeing a new digi video :)
I had to stop watching for a little bit because the flashing lights were killing my head but I've missed these kinds of videos. Keep it up digi
Had never even heard of these, yet these OVAs look really impressive just aesthetic wise.
Wow, really enjoyed this video Digi! I'm very familiar with the Yu Yu Hakusho series and you definitely captured a lot of the interesting and odd aspects of that show in this video. Im so glad you made this
would you ever consider doing a video on Utena's director Kunihiko Ikuhara digi?
I would consider it indeed
Utena, Sailor Moon S4, Penguindrum,etc
You better finish Yuri Kuma if you want to do a video on him though.
And Penguindrum. And Sailor Moon.
+Digibro you don't like/haven't watched Sailor Moon digi? its 200 eps but there are almost no wasted episodes in the grand scheme of things. Also Season 3, Sailor Moon S, is probably one of the best seasons in all of anime.
Watching 'Le Portrait de Petit Cossette' made me come back to these videos.
Goddamn digi i love your videos so much.
That bit in the cave always makes me cry. Damn you Akiyuki Shinbo and your immense talent
[sees a notif for new digi video]
[drops everything to watch it]
great video! I'd love to see more like it, perhaps even covering studios as well as directors! Either way, I'm looking forward to more.
Oh man. I really hope Shinbo in the 00's is a multi-parter. So much anime. Soul Taker was my introduction to Shinbo, and man, did it prep me for his other works I've watched.

Fantastic, makes me so want to revisit 90s anime ^^

A lot of these had somewhat long or obscure names and I had to go back to find the title of what you were talking about to research more about it.
awesome. I am really interested to see where this project develops.
Great video 😊❤️
cool cool, chill chill
Great video, would love more content like this
Also the zooming into an eyeball multiple times happened in yu yu hakusho aswell
THANK YOU
So now that it's all gone did anyone manage a good backup?? I feel like tehre's a 1 or 2 part video about another director that didn't get preserved. These directory reviews are something that actually got me to watch anime and be inspired by it and now I can't find the physical counterpart to the video that exists in my head... does anyone at least have a list of video titles so I can figure out all the anime figureheads he documented over the years?? Then I could just look up all their work myself.
Hee hee
"The Great Anime Director Who Time Forgot
" ?
Or if it wasn't a director
"The Writer Who Kept Anime WEIRD" ?
Man I love the way 90s anime looks.
When is episode 2 of Interesting Anime Protagonists coming out? It was months ago & there's a lot to talk about.
And how to recognize a great anime in just one episode too.
I could listen to you nerd out on Yu Yu Hakusho all day long.
I'm interested in the transfer of directorial tricks between Gainax and SHAFT. Like were moments of Karekano where I thought "oh gainax did it first" (would have t rethink that after this video) and TTGL was Gekidan Inu Curry's first credit.
I had a Zorro movie as a kid, an animated one, I really liked it, I will Have to watch it again some time
Hiei's attack was done by Shinbo? Dang, I've been watching Akiyuki Shinbo stuff since I was a kid. That feels really cool to know.
i can't believe my favorite yu yu hakusho episode turned out to have such historical significance
haha ninku! I remember seeing the ads for the english version before anime that I liked to watch
Imagine if Shinbo did an episode of Samurai Jack
It's incredible how much one person has shaped by preferred aesthetic for visual media without me realizing it.
I drop everything when I saw Hiei is the thumbnail from a RUclipsr
Mah boy Akiyuki "give me more cocaine money" Shinbo.
This is perfect. I was just watching some Monogatari Series when i noticed this :D
Hey, I did own a copy of that Michael Schuhmacher poster from 20:51. Also amazing vid as always.
Damn, I can only imagine a Legend of the Galactic Heroes video series...
I was just listening to YYH's Japanese OP (only like a million times) and then I look at my sub box and see this.
And I'm rewatching it. Nice to know who directed my favourite trippy darkness flame episode. Whenever Hiei shouts the name of his attacks it just cracks me up.
Elwood Hellsythe LOL, no I just like the Japanese OP more
Chicken Permission I haven't checked out the sub to a great extent, I've been watching the dub. So far it's pretty good, but I hope the voices get a little less cheesy.
i have a feeling this series will culminate in the Monogatari series followup video. Color me hyped XD
That evil doctor fight was the first episode I ever watched all the way through (because I usually caught the end of an episode or I didn't have the remote) of an anime other than the 4Kids shows. And I have to say, its what got me into anime. Just that episode alone.
now i feel like rewatching yu yu hakusho
I dont really watch anime and have mostly no idea what you are talking about, but i enjoy your videos nonetheless for some reason.
Your videos are insightful. Can you talk about his early works of Kon Satoshi too? Saw the videos about his films in Every Frame a Painting. But didn't know about his early works.
I had no idea he worked on so many shows before the 00s, the only ones I knew of were Yu Yu Hakusho and Metal Fighter Miku
I need to finish Metal Fighter Miku.
Didn't know he worked on it. As a fan of pro wrestling. I loved it. I love the scene where they are taking bums.
SilentWaltz Have you seen hunter x hunter?
The manga, and at least the 2011 version, yes, I plan to watch the 99 shortly, which had some interesting stuff that sometimes outdoes the 2011 one in its beginning.
I approve of that final frame.
oh yeah, i have to wonder, why is Hiei the short hand for chunni .The i have a magic eye/evil power sealed in my right arm gimmick?
This was like someone narrating a wikipedia article. I stopped after about 4 minutes and skipped around, then stopped watching.
You should do a top/recommendation of your favorite directors.
Ever think of doing a video series focusing on the careers of Hiroyuki Imaishi or Kazuya Tsurumaki? I like the staff in Gainax is why I'm asking.
I'd like to do stuff about everything Gainax has ever done or been involved with.
Hope you get to doing that soon would be a very interesting series of videos and I would definitely watch the shit out of it.
+Digibro Then awaken whatever Asian blood you have and work like a crazy person.
I never knew I liked Shinbo that much.
