  • When using SVG imported into freeCAD we will find that the rotation point or point of transformation is not in the correct position, sitting somewhere at the top left hand corner. In this video will will understand how to use simple drafting techniques to fix the rotation point and attaching it accurately to any part of the SVG.

At 9:53, after we extract three points from the logo, we can straight away draw a circle passing through them:
    1. Click on the drop-down list for the *Circle* tool, and select the "3 rim points" option.
    2. Click on the three points.
FC creates a circle that passes through all three points.

Love your videos. Hope you can help with what I am struggling with. I have tried everything to take a shapestring and pocket it (cut through) a half 360 degree rotated shell (looks like a half shell of a golf ball ) without success. Would appreciate a step by step video showing the process. Thanks.

Glad your enjoying 😊😊 I may already have done something similar to your request. Is this the kind of thing you are looking for? ruclips.net/video/bMhMiPaqH3U/видео.html

Inkscape released a new version yesterday....I haven't had a chance to look at it. I wonder if they've added the ability to set a document's origin. (I highly doubt it).

Did the very last operation in the video actually result in the logo's origin being the center of the cog?

For me construction point created in Sketch don't apear as snap point for move transformation and I can't understand why?

Which FreeCAD version do you use? In this video we're seeing 0.21 (which as of today is now an official release).

Make sure your snapping is enabled. If you look at the lock icon it should have a grey background when enabled

there is nothing simple about this method 😜
(it's not you, it's FreeCAD that can sometimes be very convoluted...)
One shouldn't have to learn Draft workbench just to "workaround" issues like this
particularly since I never need to us Draft workbench for anything else 🧐

That's true but I consider it a small price to pay. If I'm having a problem getting freecad to do something for me I can usually find a solution on this channel.

I wish the transform tool had snapping similar to the draft tools which would make life so much easier. The way you have to do this, yeh It does sound wrong and I can understand how people get frustrated, but if you think about t, it does make some sense why the draft is used for this. The reason why you have the draft is to work with 2D objects. SVG is 2D. The centering issue is down to the svg and not freecad. Good thing is the draft tools can be moved to a workbench of your choice by adding them to a sub menu. Freecad chose to go down a workbench root to organise the tools which has both it's strengths and weaknesses and often I find that tools in add on workbenches can often be better than the tools in the main default ones.

See my post above, FreeCAD seems to be like that but remember its Open Source. I've found with a lot of patience I can generally figure it out and I'm a beginner. Also many users are running Older Systems so compatibility etc issues no doubt occur. Regards RW
