"Now the food is cold and the wife feels old and all hands are fold as the 2 year old says grace. She says help the starving children to get well... but let my brother's hamster burn in hell..." Possibly the greatest line I've ever heard from any song ever
This is the first John Hiatt song I ever heard, I heard the album version. Good arrangement, good guitar, interesting words and good vocals. Bought the album. Got hooked. The man is a poet, great composer and great musician.
Kenneth Blevins... an old friend of mine along with John, Sonny Landreth (guitar) and Dave Ranson (bass). They are The Goners but no longer touring with John.
If he's impersonating his Dad, here, in this performance it doesn't sound like he liked him...but he's a true artist and his inspiration could have come from somewhere else!!
I thought he had lost some of his edge for a little while but with the cd "Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns" I think he's regained it. Lots of very dark songwriting.

What a great preformer John Hiatt is. Funny how glitz and glitter capture so many but true musical genius is often overlooked.

Album version from Bring The Family. Different line up of musicians. Freakin' can't beat Cooder, Keltner, and Lowe!
Father's day! Yup my dad. Love and miss you!
Stunning. These are literally better than the original recordings. Thank you SO much.
Cannot mistake Sonny playing slide!
John's encore song 2010 Harvest Blues Festival.
Sonny is a bayou legend. This is Rock & Roll.
Bingo. If gets better than this, I don't need the add-on. :-)
Perfect on every level.
I've seen him play this one two or three times. It's one of my absolute favorites.
When I die I want to come back as Sonny Landreth.
Quite a compliment !
It's not always a picnic being dad and there aint always somebody to share it with.
Amazing song! Love it!
I love how he forgets his lyrics and just keeps going. Smooth.
Not once but twice!! I've noticed that on several of his live performances. As long as it all rhymes in the end, I guess.
My favorite song, no really I got one
"And let my brother's hamster burn in hell..."
what an inspired line....LMAO!
fantastic
landreth was the best of the many guitarists that hiatt hired over the years. he has gone on to a great solo carerea(sic).
In Webster's online version, this performance should be linked to both "talent" and "electricity".
a true American legend.
@alisonprov1. are you kidding me. He loved his dad! that is what this song is all about.
Damn that Drummer is killin !!!
Kenneth Blevins... an old friend of mine along with John, Sonny Landreth (guitar) and Dave Ranson (bass). They are The Goners but no longer touring with John.
Yep, good drummer, but Jim Keltner really killed it on the studio version.
The flubbed line is "and ya feel like hell so ya might as well get out and
sell your smart ass door to door".Great song from a great artist !!
Really? I thought he nailed it with "and der girgen fard der sumbin tard smart ass door to door".
writer's inspiration does not have to come from their lives. hiatt wrote a song about a guy shotgunning his family (...barbie ferrari).

Bingo. As good as it gets.
Esta es una rolota. G3ni@l Genial !!!

now that he is older, the edge has gone from his songwriting and performing, i'm afraid. that is said as a huge fan.
I should take your fingers from your ears....
Wow, really fast tempo on this version.
@hminkema You can see that he blew the lyrics from his smile.
forgive me, but I'm ever so attracted to John's yellow teeth
A couple dozen hot yellow Leko lights flooding the stage will turn everything to yellow!
Funny that John loses his own lines at 0:47. Do fans know the lyrics better than their idol does?
