First time commenting. For those of you who love the sounds of the AC15, but find it too loud for home use, you might want to consider the AC15H, which is a head. One difference between the head and the two combos versions is that the head has a built in attenuator with three different stages (15W, 1.5W and 1/6W), which I tend to use during my late night practices. You can really awesome tones at whisper volumes, but still be loud enough for gigs.
By the way, awesome videos, Lando. Super informative and I really like that you didn't try to create a youtube character in your presentation. You just present things as yourself without trying too hard acting as a different persona.
I really wish the Combo had the attenuator! I saw those specs when they released the head, great option.
and thanks. ya what you see is me. I'm not trying to act at all. just trying to make it relaxing sounding and not in your face like so many youtubers out there. that stuff's not for me. :) thanks for checking out my channel!
I only find the need for the attenuator is late at night, because as you mentioned in your video, even at 15W, its sounds pretty good at low volume. It is just when I wish to be super quiet at night that I tend to use the attenuator, which actually works great.
+Paulo Saraiva ah cool. I'm fortunate to have a soundproof jam room that I built. So late night jamming is ok at high volumes
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the AC15H doesn't have a speaker. So you can't just choose between the head and the combo, you need the head with a cab, right?
+Matt Rependa thats right. the ac15h is a head only and it needs a cab
I absolutely LOVE my AC15. I'm not typically a metal player but have been helping a friend with his metal project. With high output humbuckers and a good overdrive pedal you can absolutely get wicked metal tones easily.
nice! check out my more recent ac15ch video. that’s my go to amp these days
The AC15 is *easily* loud enough to gig with. Yes it's got that Beatles vibe but turn up the gain, plug in a Gibson SG and you can go all Wolfmother on it.
SG's are my personal favorite guitar to run through AC15's. One of my favorite tones I've had was my SG into a JHS Superbolt into an AC15.
Just bought one. Delivered this week, cant wait!
nice! have fun! 🎸👍
True about the modding. I've replace the tubes, reverb tank and speaker. I've got videos on my channel about all of those and a how-to blog.
Ears McMurphy I'll check it out
Most guitarists just aren't familiar with the way vox sets up their eq. It's not as easy to plug and play as a hot tod deluxe or the like. Takes a little time to dial on but once you do, Holy shit you'll never play another amp.
It's true😀
Well said
I have this amp for almost two years. Im very satisfied. I was surpsied on how better the pedals sound on this amp. I actually considered selling my distortion pedal, because I thought it was bad. Once I connected it to my new vox, It sounded COMPLETELY different. In a better way. Don't know, maybe it's just a placebo? hehe. The only thing I don't like is the weight. Haven't done many gigs with it, but I can already imagine what pain it will be to carry it around...Aside from that, It's a great amp. Im going to use it for a loooooooooong time
I gig with mine. Play mostly chimey stuff. Plug into boasted channel with master and channel set to 11 o’clock position. Loud enough for everything I do. Use tube screamer for higher gain stuff so I don’t have to mess with amp during gig. Volume is loud enough that I usually start with a guitar volume setting around 5-6 and turn up as room gets louder during the night. Upgraded tubes are a must for this.
thanks for sharing!
Just picked up one of these after finding it on Craigslist for 400. Got it in green. Your videos definitely helped me to take the jump and I appreciate that man. It's my first tube amp after putting the guitar down for years and picking it up again now. I can't be happier, playing guitar is one of life's most rewarding experiences for me and I hope for many others as well. Thanks for these videos. Now to start researching pedals...
+Nick Tirado awesome nice! ac15 was my first tube amp too and totally rebooted my interest in playing guitar. 🎸🎸🎸😁😁
same here,, been away from the guitar for a long long time and really looking forward to getting the chops back in shape,
a few years ago the AC15 completely reinvigorated my interest in playing guitar.
This amp rules. Luscious glassy articulate tone. Great effects and clean up super good my guitars soundprisrine
I love my AC 15. I would like an effects loop though. Modded mine with 12 AT 7 tubes in the preamp, I was looking for cleaner cleans, lost some overall volume but cleaned it up nicely. I have literally never had it past halfway anyway. I would buy it again at full price.
awesome amp! sounds like a cool mod
I got mine today. Wonderful tone and louder than I expected. While not an attenuator, I find that I can coax some pretty nice tones at reasonable sound levels, using the channel and master volumes. That's how we did it in the sixties. ;-)
nice! ya it's a fun amp
picked one up last week,,, this thing is much more versatile then alot of folks think..i tihnk this maybe be the only amp i will ever need,, i mostly play blues,, classic rock,, british rock,, and some country. not any big stadiums,, mostly home and practice,, the cleans are as like fender and it will crunch and grind,, and yes it will take pedals just fine,, so the laxk of effects loop is not a problem. highly recommend it !!!!
hey awesome! I think a lot of people get hung up over the lack of FX loop. Not a deal breaker for me. take care!
The clean is NOT like a Fender.
I love my AC 15. It does everything I need it to do. Gripes? I really wish it had an effects loop and a mid control. Other than that, no complaints.
Roy Benson ya those are the two most common things I hear. Tube Screamer helps with the mid hump a bit
lando27music So does an EQ pedal. I set the Top Boost eq flat, and get my exact tone with the pedal. This is the first amp I've ever owned that I don't really need a lot of effects with. I can use anything from my acoustic to any of my electrics and find the tone I need with nothing more than the Vox and the EQ.
I love my AC15 its a wonderful amp. And yes, it will take high gain pedals just fine for metal. The MXR super badass I use sounds decent enough. My only complaint with the amp is no effects loop.
Matt Mckivigan hey thanks for the info about metal. I just got a Boss DS1 that I havent tried yet. and ya I dont recall any Vox amps having an FX loop
Matt Mckivigan literally have that same pedal and was gonna get this amp lol good to know it handles that pedal well
lando27music the Vox AC30CC2 (and maybe the C2) has an effects loop
smart!
One of the best amps I ever owned. Had to part ways with it, down the road Id love to grab a hand wired model.
I love mine. I A/B the normal and top boost channels and assign my effects as appropriate to the settings for each. This amp is plenty loud, and for home use you'll need to keep the master to a reasonable level.
The british instrumental rock band The Shadows used to have this amp at their gigs and recording sessions during the 60s....!!!
If you have ever heard of them...
This is really an awesome amp....!!!
Thanks!!!😊😊
Yep. The AC30 was invented for them. My Dad's a huge fan, he's had a couple of early '60s AC30s over the years... He doesn't know it, yet, but he's getting an AC15 for his 80th.
True story: My first tube amp was an AC15. I sold it for more power. I’ve had several Twins, Vibrolux, Bassman, and a Deluxe Reverb. A lot of headache and many years later, I have an AC15 again and couldn’t be happier. It just makes the sound I enjoy, no need for pedals, crank and control gain with guitar volume.
the AC15CH1 is cool too
From my experience, a totally AWESOME AMP!!
Agreed!
Adding a 2k2 resistor in parrallel with the 1st stage cathode R C gives the amp even bigger balls
Happy to know that my first tube amp is grest😎
cheers!
Me 2… just got mine yesterday…
Mine has a noise issue. Don't know if it is just the noise Floor. It annoys me when I let chords ring out and then the noise come back. I bought new tubes and Mogami cords. It could be the room I have it plugged in. Sounds great, just has an audible white noise going on. I just discussing veered having the master up all the way, then using the volume on the to boost to dust. Amp sounds fuller and really clean
+hollowmenrule is it a really loud noise, or kind of a hiss?
Just got my C1 today 🤗
nice! great amp!
great review! And thank you for not being that annoying youtuber with a fake personality and "wacky" editing. I get mine tomorrow and I can't wait! Got a fender tele going in :)
I'd love this amp, and buy it tomorrow, but i'm so scared it would be to loud for my
room.. is there any way over this, I want a clean sound with just a hint of distortion ?
other than that I was thinking of the vox ac15 head, but works out expensive with cabs anorl ?
ya that's tough. it is too loud for bedroom. have you checked out the ac10?
This amp plays well at lower volume imo. I never turn mine up very loud, doesnt bother anybody. Unless of course I forget to hit standby switch before unplugging the guitar...then yikes!
You can get volume control boxes. They allow you to crank up the volume and overdrive the tubes but with the final output as low as you like.
i have it and play it in my basment and it sounds bad because of how loud it is when its in 20 feet away from your face
Love my AC15!!
Why was the Vox 15 watt Nightrain combo C2 classic never real popular and discontinued ? I always loved mine.
Maybe because it didnt have the classic look?
How does this compare with the Night Train G2, I have the latter and it sounds better than a Blues Jr. I have.
+Alexis Rosales Ruiz Hey there! Night Train is one line from Vox that I haven't yet tried. I hear it's very different than the AC series. hopefully someone else can answer your question
Love mine, it's the perfect amp for me.
People always say the ac15 doesn't take pedals well. It's kind of true if you use the top boost channel into gain (past edge of breakup). It certainly doesn't take pedals as well as a blues jr. But it's built WAYYY better than a blues jr!
However, they are almost double the cost of a blues jr. Hell my Ac15c1x is now selling for $1,300! It was $800 but they jacked up ac15 prices. It's also not nearly as loud as a blues jr.
They (ac15) are FAR heavier than most 15w amps I've owned! Something to keep in mind. I'm 37 and was always in very good shape until a recent back injury. I'd rather not move my ac15 now lol
I think it takes pedals great, except fuzz
@@landonbailey I use a 3699 fuzz with mine and I agree it sounded better on my fender!
You can clip bright caps on Top Boost channel so Fuzz and Distortion pedals aren't fizzy
Mike Sveda ya I've heard if that mod too but never really considered it
Did that mod. Make it switchable. Without pedals with mod on it sounds darker, less clear, but more vintage(?). It’s quite easy to do and you get a different palette of tones. Also it makes the bass and treble much more interactive.
Thnx for the videos Lando. Mvx150 coming soon? As that maybe an Ac killer. Lets see.
hey yaI haven't seen the mvx150 yet. i believe July is the release date
Lando27Music Or you can just plug up to the normal channel (which has more mid-range, by the way) and save time, trouble, and possibly money. I don't bother with the top boost channel. I find that the normal channel's voicing is perfect.
Doesn't have an effects loop, so you have to have delay going into the front end of the amp.
On high volume, (playing with drums, church, small gig) gets extremely boomy, choking the tone and there's nothing you can do about it since there's no bass knob on it. Can become a big problem if you don't have professional sound people, running around, taking care of any problems that might arise all the time. You can put an eq, fill it with dampening materials etc. but then, that credit goes to you, not the amp.
Also has a very particular overdrive tone. Gotta hear to decide.
good to note! thanks for the feedback
You can play classic metal and most of 80s metal just fine
Cool thanks for the feedback! I love classic and 80s metal. I think when I was saying metal I was thinking about modern death/hardcore.
@@landonbailey I just got one, To metal I turn the preamp down to 9 oclock and use a mooer friedmain preamp mini pedal. I use the speaker out to a closed back 4x12 cab. Sounds extensive but only takes a second for me to setup, and sounds killer lol
I own one of these and I think it's too loud for home use and not loud enough to gig with. The volumes you need to put the amp through for it to yield the goods are not hush-hush bedroom levels. It does have a master volume, but that's for the power tubes and you need to crank the power tubes anyway. I took it to a gig and even used an extension cab but had to switch to the venue's own backline after the first song. This was a small bar and the amp wasn't mic'd, but we're a loud band. You can do any gig if you mic this thing. The distortion it gives you when cranked is beautiful. Just my two cents!
If this amp is not loud enough for the room, you ought to be micing everything. This is not 1985... you don't need that kind of volume on stage!! In 35 years pro, I have NEVER needed more volume than this for on-stage, and have never played with a drummer that this amp wouldn't be able to get up and over volume-wise.
is it true that you can hook it into a speaker cab and bypass the speaker? or is that the ac30.
+Snooze00 it's true. I did just that for this video ruclips.net/video/deradp-XIl8/видео.html
considering buying this amp in white bronco so im pretty much sold, thanks!
+Tony Tombstone those look cool! same price for the white?
Hey Tony, if you haven't pulled the trigger yet on the AC15 in White Bronco, I would highly recommend it. I picked that one for the Celestion Creamback. Once you break it in the tone is unreal. (I say that coming from a Dr Z Maz 18 jr that had tone galore)
Im really glad you didnt say: Im so excited!
Almost all the people are saying that. Thanks for been yourselft.
hey thanks! ya I don't like acting as someone I'm not :) take care
I play nirvana with this and it's to loud to my room
I’m going to replace the tubes in mine soon . Any suggestions for brand of tubes?
JJ Electronics
@@landonbailey I second that.
I owned a vox ac15 and it's just too fucking loud for a practice amp, i love the cleans but it can get really icepicky/shrill, i modded mine by removing the bright cap and it helped but in the end i couldn't handle the volume needed for growl.
TheEthug ah thats too bad. just curious wharlt kind of guitar and pickups you used to play through when the highs were too picky. not much you can about the volume level. I really love mine playef with lace sensor pickups
TheEthug dude, try to use the normal Chanel and work with the tone cut to control the ice pic. That will give to you a warm tone, like John Scofield or Mike Campbell. If still don't work, try a clean booster like ep booster. That will give a bit of compression and body... and tweek the volume and tone knobs. that work for me.
totally forgot about the Normal channel haha. I used it exclusively in my video showing how pedals sound through the amp. thanks for the reminder!
My cousin used an AC15 and he said one drummer he jammed with the 15 was not loud enough, because all that drummer knows how to do is hit hard. He said when he played with a more seasoned drummer that understood dynamics the 15 was plenty loud.
+William Olsen hehe ya, I think it's plenty loud for most band situations. 😁
I just bought an AC15 2 days ago I love it, but I am still searching for my tone on it. I guess I am looking for a stoner rock/shoegaze type sound. This is primarily for recording; Do you have any recommendations?
+William Olsen cool great amp! but ya thats a tough one to answer. I really like the Top Boost channel, but others stay away from it and only like the Normal. I usually kept the channel volume close to breakup (12 noon ish) and then I would add my fav dirt pedals in front of that
Do you think it can work for jazz?
ya you can get some warms cleans without breakup, if that's what you need for JAzz. :)
I have an AC15c2. the trem is CRAZY, take yer head off. The reverb is weak I think. nothing like the swampy effect you get from the old Fenders. Maybe an acutronics tank is in her future. aside from that, I love it! :)
cool! was the tank always weak?
I've only had it for two weeks. It.s never been any different. Seen other vids and they seem equally weak
ah k
are the lace sensor on the strat in the back new??
+Amit Sapir I've had it for a few years. you can check it out here ruclips.net/video/Suf9wl8R8so/видео.html
Can this amp sound like nirvana
depends what you mean by that :)
Yes-parts of Nevermind were recorded through a Vox AC30.
Its LOUD yet I can pick it up without hurting myself
Awesome amp at a fair price
NO PROBLEM to gig with in nearly ANY situation!! Any room that it won't fill, you'll be mic'ing up everythin g anyway.... any STAGE too big, you'll have monitors you can fold it back through.
Bright Cap!
Alright 1 thinf ive seen so many videos on changing the tubes and evry video ive seen with the before and after the amp so unded better eith the original tubes yeah there chinese el84 tubes but they still sound like modt other el84 tubes and theyh are amazing tubes in my opinion most of the amps that zi like have el84 power tubes but really the tone of that amp has to do with those tubes also ive seriously not seen one video where I liekd the sound better after the tubes were chnaged and on each video 75 percent of the comments said the same ad me when you by this amp its usually because you like the amp for what it is and you like the tone for what it is its all part of the way it was made it was designed to siund like it does with the parts it comes with I love the sound of all of the ac amps and there all amazinf and I lo ve them all the way they sound stock but great video man I def agree with most of what you said and they do make an ac10 if yoy want an ac for home use it sounds just as good jf not a little better with the tone and you dont have to dial it i n as much as other ac amps to get the tone your looking for like andertons review on the ac10 they said it was the best sounding amp they have ever had in that room and they have reviewed hundreds and hundreds of amps and zi just dont see why you would want to change something that sounds that good but to each there own
Can you tell me how loud does it take to get a decent sound? Thank you
hey there! that's a tough one because what sounds good to me might not sound good to you. :) Generally it will be pretty loud.
We have a wampler triple wreck into our ac15 can easily do metal.
cool tip!
My dad has the same amplifire
+Matt Rependa cool, great amp!
What do you say, AC15 yay or nay? Hey do you like to play? Good day.
I would say yea because I'm a bit of a pedant.
I say Yay, traded in a 6 month old Blues Deluxe Reissue for my AC15 today!
lando27music yay definitely
Yay!
main reason.... sound and its green celest spkr
Big muff on this sounds great
how do you dial yours in? :) just curious on your channel/settings
Lando27Music on the top boost with volume around 2 o clock and master knob around 10 counter clockwise bass and treble around 3 o clock
cool thanks!
I can tell you really like the Vox AC15.
it's ok. haha jk, ya I love it :)
So it is so great that you needed to change everything about it. Lol! Great!
yes
@@santafemikez9694 What he said!
That’s why I’ll never buy another amp that doesn’t have those 3 letters on the front.
Unless I get rich then ofc an orange rockerverb 50
Hey Vox Could you please build the AC 100 again and while you’re at it could you please build a super beetle in the Vox Royal guardsmen and while you’re at it please build the Vox Buckingham again
they take messages on their facebook page. you should try asking them on there 👍🎸
first on something :)
Great amp but just not good for a bedroom guitarist.
