I grew up in a family where you had to play along with denials and ignore behavior, and back biting and jealousy was just what people were about. I always sort of saw through it but calling it out was just hitting a brick wall AND riling everyone up so I learned to keep my mouth shut and pretend things were normal. What this did for most of my adult life is groom me to be in relationships (platonic and romantic) with gas lighters and haters and accept it as normal. I think I was lucky in that I saw the truth at all times, but I was still living with the cognitive dissonance of playing along with the lies. One day I decided I'm cutting everyone off the minute they show any signs of dishonesty, side eye, or jealousy. The hardest part of forgiving past people and circumstances is forgiving yourself for not ending it sooner, or letting it start to begin with. What helps me with that is knowing that I was conditioned to be that way, I didn't just come into this world accepting BS. I did try to fight it at one time, but I was a dependent so fighting it was counterintuitive to my survival. And I know that once I woke up, and I was also independent enough that I could just send them on their way, I did so. So, if anyone out there is being hard on themselves for not seeing something for what it was, or for ignoring the red flags, I hope you take some peace from my experience. Either you were groomed as a child (highly likely) or you want to see the best in people (which is a good thing, and I will never stop being that way) but once you came to understand it for what it is, you cut it off as soon as you were in the position to do so. Or you've made the decision today to do that.

Thank you Lynn, interesting you mention reincarnation. When I was child, around six yrs old, nested in the safety and security of the suburbs and in a home where we weren't even allowed to watch tv - I had a very vivid dream that I was shot in the chest. In this dream I somehow I knew I was man. I felt the blast of it, and I knew what it was, even though I had no way of knowing . It's like I've been doing battle with dark forces from the earliest age. It motivated me to practice what I can describe as spiritual hygiene.
