Morning Anxiety can feel debilitating when we are first getting a handle on it. In this video, I explore what has worked for me in my process for integrating morning anxiety, exploring how I leveraged it as a teacher to deepen in insight while also integrating many of its most challenging aspects.

My channel is a resource for helping you reduce suffering in daily life through the application of root level solutions. This is advocated with orientating toward Awakening/Non-Dual awakening, Source-code emotional integration using somatic (emotional) inquiry and taking on an empirical, open hearted investigation of core beliefs and perceptual overlays that innocently accrue in childhood and create suffering.
If you resonate with teachers such as Angelo Dilullo, Ramana Maharishi, Jeff Foster, Suzanne Chang, Violet Synergy, Joseph Goldstein, Scott Kiloby, Michael Taft and Adyashanti - you’ll find this material very relatable.
I rarely comment, but I want to share my fresh experience. This video came just 2 days after discovering your channel.
This topic is something that's been bothering me for at least 7-8 years now. This morning, a few minutes ago after my evening meditation practice which was very "unfruitful" since I couldn't deal with all the tension in my body, I've had the morning anxiety come up very strongly from the very first moment of waking up. Usually it's heart palpitations and a very severe "anxiety belly ache".
What I've noticed this morning, is that it's not the sensations that are causing the suffering, but the very subtle (and convincing) mental feeling or cloud of impending doom.
For the first time now, I've chosen to ignore that cloud and just went straight into the body (which is not something I haven't done before, but this time it was all in).
At first there was a sense of everything worsening and a huge resistance to it, but suddenly a feeling of lightness came about.
Sort of a metaphor appeared. It's like drowning in an ocean, gasping for air and being spastic, because one feels that they will drown once they let go. But the funny part is that if you let go, you don't even float. You just touch the ocean floor with your feet and realize that you're in a very shallow water which your mind unknowingly projected to be an ocean to protect you. We are so afraid to let go because we feel like we'll be suffocating the moment we try to set our feet down, since it feels we're in the middle of the ocean with no ocean floor in sight.
Sam this is going to sound odd coming from someone all too familiar with this. But, I find as I’m listening, I’m not looking or expecting a how-to or a solution.
Instead, Im just stopped.
I didn’t realize others went through this particular torture.
Usually I add on guilt and judgement for even experiencing it.
May we all see. ♥️
Thank you for this one Sam.
Such a joy to hear, I'm glad
Its always so bad when you wake up
Definitely feel you. It gets better.
soooo annoying..lve been writing to my anxiety in my journal. That helps...Dear Anxiety thank you for looking out for me etc etc
Cortisol is higher in the morning too.
@@louisebotos7321 Yes I wish I mentioned morning cortisol. A nice awareness piece to have. Thanks for the reminder.
@@SamRoff:)
Thank you so much! It is indeed a privilege to be able to feel this pain, to become truly authentic.
@@ataylor992 it sure is… necessary recalibration for something much more real to step forward. Too much inauthenticity for far too long.
How fantastic....for years I have been doing meditation & yoga & spiritual studies and being totally perplexed as to why in early morning I would have negative thoughts, frightening dread about everything (it was such a contrast to the bliss states)....I'm now going to study this video & put into practice these ideas. Thank you so much.
You're so welcome ❤🔥
Hey Sam, this is Brian. I believe we were in Kentucky together. Robert just sent me your 'morning anxiety' video and having watched it, I wanted to thank you for making and sharing it. More than any I recall watching, this spoke to me *personally*, to where I'm at, to how and when I'm struggling the most, esp upon waking, (exactly as you described)! And it was comforting to know that you've been through, and are maybe still going through, the same or similar. I've been experiencing tension lately in my hips and "third eye" area, and there's often an associated story. With your prompting, I sent them both love, and then a big smile came to the face and they softened. I keep forgetting and remembering that unconditional love and acceptance is always the answer to life & its challenges. Lastly, I don't remember ever leaving a comment on a RUclips video, so that should demonstrate the sincerity of this message and my gratitude to you for this compassionate advice and sharing.
@@brianchamowitz6358 Awesome you were at the retreat! And wow Brian, thank you for sharing. I’m really glad it could help 🙂
Sam, this is awesome. Correlating thoughts to tension in the body and breathing into the tension with aware acceptance has been magical for me ❤
It's a powerful approach for sure!
It’s pretty bad for me every day , I must admit I feel some relief that it’s not just me , it does die down most of the time
When you wake up in the morning your cortisol (stress hormone) levels are at their highest and peak around 7am. It's a natural response to get you up, starting tasks and staying focused. Unless of course you focus on the feeling too much and disable yourself.
@@psyhense Yes. For others, it can be debilitating and cannot helped but to be focused on.
I really relate to this.
Awesome man.. I'm glad.
Thanks
This is helpful for many
There are many osho meditation (dynamic)like kundalini gibberish to metabolise these trauma
@@bindumadhavan849 yesss dynamic meditation is great for this. Just very energising at night though
Thank you Sam, this video came at the right time for me as it is morning and I am suffering a lot of anxiety. Do you have any resources for TRE exercises? I think I need to adopt a warrior mindset as you said as I seem to living as a victim lately.
Of course! There's a free TRE course you can follow that is excellent by Richmond Heath - a fellow Aussie.

@@SamRoff Thank you Sam! I will check this out!

I feel like my anxiety and trauma makes me socially awkward and people treat me kinda badly because they see me as weak and charmless. This is why I take pills 😂, anxiety meds make me better socially and have good experiences in the world especially with women. Wish I didn’t have to rely on them though tbh.
Patience and resilience ⚔❤ thanks for your vulnerability.
You pose the question it’s our teacher , Iv missed the point I think 😂 what is it teaching me ?
@@Magicalfluidprocess In the video I talked about how it is showing you how to not buy into catastrophizing thoughts and thoughts in general, shows you non reactivity (which will translate into daily life) and helps bring you in deep, ongoing, intimate contact with your bodily sensations so you can integrate and metabolize reactive things occurring through the day more readily and on an ongoing basis. So it teaches embodiment. I know it sucks, but through those learning’s it gets better and better and is ultimately grace. If that isn’t a teacher, I don’t know what is ;)
@@SamRoff thanks for responding Sam , but I don’t see the how of those things , I don’t see the Way in which my morning anxiety teaches me not to buy into my thoughts, I feel as though you are just saying it will , but with no clear instructions, apologies if I’m being a bit ignorant, can you put it into 2 sentences?
Thank you for what you do 👍
@@Magicalfluidprocess fair.
2 sentences
We have unskillful ways of interacting with morning anxiety in the morning which creates suffering. We can either resist, push against it and suffer more (which is often how it is before we begin to adapt and work with it); or we can learn from what it has to teach us by softening resistance, deidentifying from thoughts that would otherwise exacerbate our pain and learn to be in more compassionate, loving contact with our bodily sensations when we experience real suffering.
Bro, take time to study physiology first, before talking about some ''energetic centers'' ))
@@LiveMusicMind haha I guess I would have been skeptical of a term like that 2-5-10 years ago too. I have come to realize that there are indeed bundles of nerves in certain regions of the body from direct experience.
