@@ChristopherFreeman0032 in the Remake there is a scene about love, and the recently released Ultimania book basically officialy confirms that Cloud loved Aerith in the original FFVII (and is obviously in love again now in the Remake), so things are looking great for them so far.

A lot of it was also to do with Jenova being awoken in him. She was the master of manipulation and illusion. Being part of him, once he was weak, she took over.
Half the stuff he found in the basement were misinformation. So after he “died” he somehow found out his true origins, possibly from Jenova’s head that fell into the mako put with him, and then decided to go full genocidal maniac.

The ending pretty much confirms that Aerith loved Cloud.

I think being lied to all his life + having hojo as his father + being an experiment all contributed to it.
