Outstanding list Z. It's great to see a list that doesn't worry about which breeds are more popular, etc.. This is a very well researched and accurate list. You're always going to have people that disagree and some "haters" but this is a solid list. Of course, there are always the people that tell us the "I had a blah, blah, blah dog and it was better than any dog on this list" story. There are exceptions to everything in the world. We have to go by the core and main source when evaluating dogs and anything else. Thanks for a great list.

A properly bred Doberman is an excellent protection dog, as a matter of fact they are the only dog in the world that was created to be a personal protection dog. Just because the show ring people have damaged them, it doesn't mean that there aren't great Doberman protection dogs. Look at what the show people have done to the American GSD's, they are a walking mess. It doesn't mean there aren't excellent GSD's, you, yourself said professionals use GSD's. The Doberman is also one of the smartest dogs in the world, similar to the GSD. The Malinois is not in their category when it comes to intelligence.
The Malinois is great for police or military work but not for a business environment or when a dog needs to stay still for longer periods of time. Also, the Malinois is a little on the smaller side and has the bark of a smaller dog. They also require a lot more exercise and time devoted to their high energy level. There are different situations where different breeds excel over others.

Yup! Tibetan Spaniels breed are small (5 kilogram) dogs that were used by Chinese royalty and Buddhist monasteries and temples, as ''alert dogs.'' This is the only breeds to ever exist, that did this specific type of job, for thousands of years. They have some of the best hearing and eyesight out of all dog breeds we know today. They were mostly sitting on top of hills or on low and thick stone fences, just outside of monasteries and temples and were allowed to jump on objects, tall structures and even rooftops - because of that, these dogs like being in high places so that they are able to see their ''territory'' and everything around it. They also have developed very strong, mid pitched barks that can be heard from quite far away, this is useful as in the past they would be sitting one or two hills away on a stone fence and bark to alert wolves or other types of intruders were coming!

@@lucian9599 honestly it depends on the situation. I would always recommend a smaller dog that can’t cause any real destruction, and won’t intimidate others. Also if a small dog tries to attack someone, most people would just think it’s cute. But this is different. You need time, you need the physical ability to control the Dogo, you need to train and socialize your dog. So I would recommend others because they are a safer option. But my first dog was a real APBT and we did great. There were hiccups, but now I feel like I can train any dog on this earth. So if you want to fully devote yourself, go ahead they’re a great breed overall!

With many dog breeds to choose from a list of just 10 is very subjective. Some great guard dog breeds that can weigh heavier can also be 100lbs or lighter, female Rottweilers, Dogo's and female Cane Corso's can be a solid 100lbs. The Schnauzer dogs large to small, Pitbulls/Amstaffs, Atkita's, Alaskan Malamute/Husky, can be about that weight generally as well. But proper training is essential if you expect any of these breeds to be prepared to protect when necessary without hesitation. Instinctual motives are primarily for deterrence, to seem like an adversary not worth messing with, the training is to take that into offensive mode and neutralize the problem. Always protect your furry friend as well as yourself with the proper firearms with proper training. ✌🏾❤

That iscactually one of a very few breeds Americans have not watered down most of them. There are many show breeders but luckily with the hog problems in the lower states they are still breed for performance and true temperaments. Only real issue there is deafness and cancers. They can both be significantly reduced with careful breeding over the decades.

A good size male or female rednose would be an acceptable force against someone trying to harm persons, maybe not property.
My female Pitt was very mother hen over my sons but lacked size. Great deterrent though and sure, I could lift her in emergencies. I can't lift my rott female at all at this point lol

The red nose Dogs are from the ofrn old family red nose bloodline they tend to be slightly larger than other American pit bull terrier bloodlines. Although that isn't reason for suggesting that they would make a better protection dog than any other American pit bull terrier.

I currently have a delightful Rottweiler female who is delightful but oddly enough the best child friendly dog I've ever had was a female apbt...youd probably be best to seek the red nose as my girl was very small physically and could be easily injured during an altercation...my female rott has a fair chance with any unarmed man at her current size.
I would focus on temperament as some apbt have horrible temperaments.
I trusted my Pitt so much id use her to sit with my boys anytime I step out of the house a few moments. I don't do that with my female rott as she loves my boys but she's not head over heels like my Pitt was.
You don't have to get a dog like her but uts really helpful when the dog can quite literally babysit for a few moments.
I'm a single mom to 2 boys and would never lie about something so important. I'm amazed my pitbull was that trustworthy due to the monsters some of them are unfortunately. :)
You'll want to make sure your pitbull has good parents and grandparents, meets tons of children and never has a bad experience in its first year of life. I also don't like dog parks.
My female rott hasn't had a bad experience so far so good...hopefully she doesn't. She won't be 1 until late October. I think its really important for powerful dogs to have as good positive puppyhood as possible.

All can be. Just realize, the more "protective" a dog is, the less likely it will be sound around children. Obviously there are plenty of exceptions that can do both, but there is a reason Golden Retrievers are family dogs and Mals/Dutchies are military working dogs.

I disagree with that. I used to be a regular at AB rare breed shows before they were recognized by AKC. If you're listening to the breeders they are lying about weights. They are salespeople too and salespeople lie to make money. John D Johnson was famous for greatly exaggerating weights. My male AB was 90-95 pounds at his heaviest and I always considered him average size. When AB enthusiasts like me saw a 115-120 pound AB we were impressed because that was rare. You even see a lot of AB's under 75 pounds and they often perform well as catch dogs. I would definitely consider them smaller than the Dogo.
