I know they're both "overdrive" pedals, but the OCD is more of a stand alone (and much more versatile) pedal and the Tube Screamer is more like a boost pedal. If you're just using a tube screamer to get your gain/distortion/etc, you're going to be a little let down. If you're using a tube screamer on top of other pedals or on top of your amp's gain channel? That is where the thing shines and can be dialed in to really create a unique sound or 'signature'. The OCD is the full package. It is the sliced bread and the toaster. Tube Screamers are the butter.
@The House Of Klaus. Very true, have an OCD (V1.4), great pedal, stand alone into a clean fender amp; great OD/Distortion at comfortable volume. Just bought a Tubescreamer (Mini), not really get much from it. BUT stacked into the OCD the TS EQ curve brings up the mid/highs well. Tried the SRV method of min drive, max level on the TS, but the amp is so clean/headroom, the TS doesn't do much on its own.
@@benink5690 Not quite. Seem to recal that Brian Wampler has done a video on that subject. Yes, an EQ pedal can boost/cut selected frequencies, but it does not add that 'little extra' something. In the case of the TS it adds mid boost, gain and grit (i.e. it colours the tone, not just adding volume like an EQ pedal).
IMO this is like comparing oranges to apples: The OCD is an OD-Distortion pedal, great to be used on its own. The TS is a booster-soft OD pedal, usually used to push or colour an already distorted amp. Rarely used on it own. Both are great pedals but very different
good video. Both pedals are great. They sound awesome stacked too! I will note that for the OCD, the HP setting gives it more of a "marshall" sound and the LP gives it more of a "tube screamer" sound for anyone interested in buying it
I am hoping to get a slightly crisper sound that I am from my OD-3. I am using a fender deluxe reverb but trying to get it a little more Marshally. I just scored one and may post my results, or not.
I just learned the tube screamer uses soft clipping diodes and the ocd uses a harder clipping diode overdrive. So their different in the sense that the ocd ads more colour to the signal. The tube screamer boost the signal of the guitar and amp more ‘naturally’
Nice Comparison Simon. There is no Right or Wrong Choice. It is all Dependent on: what type of sound you are looking-for, what type of music you play, your Amp, Pickups, Guitar and how each pedal Interacts with your Other Pedals & Effects. A More Versatile Pedal ( i.m.o. ) The OCD can dial-in just about any sound, from a Stevie Ray / Blues Crunch to a Zeppelin / Van Halen Sound. Loads of Tonal Options. Great to have both on the board. Enjoyed your video. - Michael Caz - NYC -
Note that the OCD has a Hi/Low Pass switch and you've left it on Hi Pass throughout the test. So the OCD always sounds brighter, a little less "round," maybe a little harsher through the whole test. The Ibanez doesn't have an HP/LP filter so it isn't exactly a one-to-one. A fairer comparison might switch between HP/LP on the OCD so you can hear what they both sound like relative to the Ibanez, since that's kinda the benchmark OD pedal since forever.
Ok. This is how you do a comparison video. No endless talking. A good, clear and accurate showing of both pedals and their characteristics. For my money, I like the Ibanez more. It was warmer and had better "sizzle" than the OCD.
Actualy I bought both pedals.Tube screamer for crunchy rhytm sound and OCD for power chords. When solo comes in,I boost OCD with screamer.Perfect match!
Good demo. The HP mode on the OCD is brighter than the LP mode. I do prefer the LP, more smooth. In fact you have 2 distorsion in one pedal. OCD is just magic!!!
actually I dont think this video is picking up all the correct sounds from these pedals accurately , because in person, the ocd is much thicker sounding and retains all the amps bass and low mids, where as the tubescreamer in person really thins the sound out. You gotta hear these in person to really see !
Taylor Kuter well not in full agreement. I have both effects and find same kind of diffrence than what we hear there. My pref gies to OCD, much more versatile tone wise, and far better defined sound. but it s all matter of taste, no winner just preferences.
I run both of these pedals on my board. My full on searing lead sound (which is just my name for max overdrive) for years of gigging is both on at the same time, the TS drive at about 12 o'clock and the mids up a bit and the OCD drive at a little less than 12 and the mids cut slightly. I play through a 4x10 Deville. Though now I'm thinking maybe I should boost the mids on the OCD more and dial them on the TS back a little. Anyways, the sound is creamy and thick.
Thank you sir. Your video is one of the few shootouts I watched in its entirety. Sensible comparison, side by side, and no need to guess which pedal is on (unlike some others who are interested in showing themselves but not the pedal, leaving me guessing). The Tube Screamer is more mellow, and changes the original sound less that the OCD. The OCD seems to be bordering on distortion, but perhaps that's because it was in HP mode. Perhaps LP would sound more equivalent to the TS. All round great video. No bells and whistles, only what is needful for a comparison. May I suggest that you play "Mary had a little lamb" should you do another comparison video :-) Well done.
I'm primarily a blues player so I obviously go for the TS. Smoother and more natural overdrive. In fact, I use one. The OCD seems more harsh and fizzy sounding. JMHO
the green box is classic but fulltone makes great product. i'd say, sound wise, the pedals are equal. depends on which one works best with your gear. i was watching another demo of a guy playing about 10 different overdrive pedals and these two sounded the best.
I have both. OCD is super thicc. Love maxing all the knobs and overloading the preamp. Ts9 is much thinner but has a real nice sound and cuts through with its mid bump. Ts9 into the ocd sounds amazing too. Probably my favorite sound is both on together
Thank you for doing this test without Echo or Reverb in the mix .. like other do. Its much more effective in comparing sound. Did you mention what type of guitar and Pickup you were using ? Sounds like all done with a humbucker .. What about people who play Strats ?
I have both of these pedals and I love them equally. It gets really nice when you run the OCD in front then kick in the Tube Screamer for really saturated tube tones, I run mine thru a '59 Bassman with a '52 Tele with Fralin pure PAF humbucker in the neck and a original '50 Broadcaster in the bridge position. The tones I get are amazing!!!
Both are great, TS9 on the smoother side and OCD on the edgy side.. I walked away from the TS9 and only kept the OCD to play live becuase its got a better range in distortion level and tone.. I can get a tube screamerish sound with my OCD but if I want to rock hard the the TS won't give me the edge I want.. that's my take on it
I've got the Keeley Red Dirt (his tubescreamer clone but with tweaks and improvements) and it sounds fantastic in the normal mode, but it has a sort of HP mode just like the OCD does which increases the gain and the bite (I believe it used to be called the power mod when keeley was just nodding tubescreamers). It works perfectly as a classic rock overdrive with humbuckers. But what I love about the sound of the OCD in every RUclips video I've seen is that it can make single coils in the bridge absolutely roar, don't even need a humbucker. So I'm gonna buy the OCD soon I think. Can play with just a strat and have the really bitey and huge sounding power chords with the bridge pickup and the OCD, then flip to the neck pickup and the keeley tubescreamer for SRV lead tone. Perfect combo IMO
DISCLAIMER: I'm a newcomer to this stuff, so I don't know whether that makes my impressions more valuable or less valuable. But anyway . . . I preferred the character of the *sound* out of the OCD. I just liked the way it sounded more. HOWEVER, the creator of the video was (correctly) trying to keep the two pedals at the same output volume, because of the well-known psychological effect that people perceive small differences in volume as differences in quality -- and my eyes were drawn to the fact that even though the two pedals were putting out about the same amplitude sound (in terms of how loud it seemed to me, listening), the OCD was turned much further down in volume than the TS was. In other words, it looks/sounds to me like the OCD is a very loud pedal, and so for most people only a small range of the volume knob is actually useable. True or false?
'Volume' in this sense is relative. I know the terminology is confusing, but you're talking about Output Gain, or just Output. Typically the 'gain' knob is *input* gain, which effects how distorted the sound becomes, which is why this same control is often just labeled 'distortion'. These pedals, despite being capable of generating their own distortion, are often used as a 'clean boost'. Ie they act as a preamp boosting the signal coming from the instrument. Which can be anything from literally boosting a clean tone, to taking a slightly overdriven Marshall and boosting into molten metal territory. In this case, the OCD would be capable of far more distortion sourced from clean boost. Very common. Metal & Hardcore players with bassy, scooped Rectifier & 5150 style amps love the TS9 to tighten their low end (actually reducing it slightly) and adding a touch more gain. If you were to run a clean boost in the effects loop, though, what you would get rather than higher gain/distortion, is a volume boost, ie the amp became louder, rather than just more distorted. Hope that helped.
I recently bought an OCD pedal and I will turn the volume knob all the way up and turn my amp down, same volume but the pedal providing the volume gives it a very different sound
Wow.. such a diff. way more highs with OCD, now that makes it sound a bit thinner toned. The TS9 just adds such silk, smooth tone. It has that signature thing. Instant SRV lead tone. Thick. You don't hear that high end fizzy grainy tone much. I don't think one is better than the other at all. If you run into a brighter articulate amp, the TS9 is your best friend.
Fantastic video. Thanks. To my ears the OCD is more "out front." With that extra presence it would cut through a mix more effectively. OTOH, The TS is much smoother and creates an environment with more depth, more musical. I would definitely go for the TS in a power trio. In a larger band with keys and horns, etc., I might go with the OCD.
I have the OCD the TS808 and the Soul Food. Each one is set at different overdrive levels. The if you hit the sweet spot on the Soul Food it has no comparison.
Why comparing them? They’re not the same categories. The tube screamer is kind of a must have pedal, not only for the sound itself but for the uses. I use the tube screamer to boost the OCD for example.
Will depend on your gear and taste; I use a Marshall 1959hw with a Les Paul and Strat and in both cases the TS makes the most out of the amp tone. The ocd lacks mids and interferes too much with the amp natural tone, doesn’t cut through the mix much ether as it gets “spongy.” Just my experience.
Sure. My comment was not critic to the video, just pointing out the differences between the pedals. I really like and appreciate this comparison videos, and this one is great to notice such differences
I like the TS9 as a lead boost. It does exactly what you'd want, dropping the bass slightly & boosting mids & highs. The OCD just does so much. Clean boost. Edge of breakup. Amplike distortion in 2 flavors, even being semi comparable to a Rat when cranked. And it does the job on bass, too. HP into a JCM800 style circuit = really nice.
The OCD in the low peak mode sounds much more like a TS-9. Can't figure out why you tried to compare the two pedals with the OCD in the high peak mode.... If you dial in a decent amp/TS-9 sound, it will sound like crap with the OCD in hp. Next time use the lp mode.
TS9 creamy and warm.. beauty OCD agressive and lot of character! The beast. I think they worth both to be on a pedalboard for different purposes ! Think each one is good for a typical amp .. Goes with TS 9 for a Vintage Marshall and the OCD for a good Mesa/Boogie hhhhhh
I like the TS9, but I've noticed that just having it in the pedal chain affects the guitar's tone, cutting some of the brightness and clarity imo. I've heard the OCD is true bypass, which would appeal to people "OCD" about their tone. I haven't tried the OCD for myself, but have been really thinking of making a switch to OCD or another true bypass pedal. I guess the only way to make a "true" comparison of the tone difference would be to have a bypass loop that switches between them, or by switching cables. etc.
Interesting comparison. Sounds like the OCD can do more (more distortion). But the Tube Screamer sounds more natural when playing blues. The irony is that the OCD has a extreme tube-like sound. I'd go for the OCD.
Not really, the tube screamer is intended to cut through because it boosts mid frequencies. OCD can get lost in a band setting unless you have an amp with plenty of mids.
OCD is the best. TS has it uses to tighten up certain amps, but a straight up OD pedal I'll take the OCD any day. Its got that smooth warm sound of a good vintage amp and has amazing crunch with a Tele or Les Paul.
I love both. I think it depends on which amp you're playing them with, hard to compare, since they have different purposes (in my opinion). OCD is more like a "fuzzy" overdrive while Tube Screamer is a little bit cleaner, less gainy.
Mickey Sigrist Spot on comparison, but I wouldn't call the OCD "fuzzy"... it doesn't distort like a fuzz pedal at all. I would call it more "full-bodied" or gainy.
I have a TS808 that I absolutely love for playing blues and shit but I am buying today an OCD for those moments when I wanna rockn'roll all night. So... Having both of them is the best choise.
Hello I already have a Procot Rat disto pedal. I'm looking for an overdrive one and I was wondering if I needed more the Ibanez pedal. Because it seems to me that the ocd is like an overdrive and disto pedal. But I think the ibanez is more focused on that overdrive sound.
The OCD can give a better sound paired with a RAT since it breaks better in high frequencies and has a better response from you lower frequencies. The TS is basically a midboost. The LP function in the OCD can make the pedal sound like a TubeScreamer. You get more with an OCD honestly. They call it Overdrive/Distortion because it has a Drive range is wider than any other overdrive pedal. This means essentially that the Drive knob is more sensitive and when you crank it it will sound more than your average soft clipping overdrive. Dont let throw you off from pairing it with a heavy distortion pedal like your RAT.
I currently have a TS9, my problem with it is the boost in volume just isn't there. I always keep it turned all the way up to cut throught the mix. Seems like the OCD maybe a good alternative.

SIMON SMITH TU AMPLIFICADOR ES UN FENDER BLUES DELUXE REISSUE? BUSCO UN SONIDO CLEAN TWANG FENDER CLASSIC, ¿SERA MEJOR EL QUE TU TIENES o EL FENDER PRO JUNIOR IV LTD?
I use only both of these two pedals. I usually set the OCD for leads and use the ts808 (maybe I should try maxon but same league) and use the ts808 for rythymn parts because it has great midtones. Both are great. I put the 535q crybaby, then these two guys, then my other pedals through the fx loop and I'm pretty happy on most rigs..Both have more than enough drive...Id say the fulltone can scoop out some mids where the ts808 I use for some rythymn mid range crunch but also is great for leads..Not that it can't go heavy they both can.... Both are fine pedals. Set up play around till you get what you want for what your doing. I may check out a maxxon because I want to also maybe set a third one for very light OD. If I'm using my Fender Twin (doesn't have an fx loop) I still use both. Funny thing, the orange rocktron I have has better Overdrive than both on the other channel so sometimes I just use a boost and just swith channels. Depends what I'm playing through and what for. Both a good and grab what works for you. peace.
Hello Simon Smith, I saw some guitarist using 2 Overdrive pedals for boosting, more gain. I wondered why they don't use 1 distortion pedal with a lot of gain and modify the distortion knob to get the sound that they want to instead of using 2 Overdrive ones. Does it really work out and make the difference? I genuinely don't get this technique. Hope you clarify it for me Thank you so much
why do we suppose all of the nuanced-feedback noise going on in between switching??? like, why would your amp make noise when you get a text on your phone?
Wondering which of these would give a DSL100H a little more push on the classic gain (green) channel? Playing largely Punkish songs. (Read Bad Religion, Methadones, etc). Not sloppy screaming punk. THANKS!
"Classic".The TS-9, originally released in 1982 - granted. The OCD is only out since 15 years; the first version was in 2005. More a modern classic. Especially when the video came out, it was just ten years on the market.
If you want more tonal options, OCD all the way, it's a welcome addition to my newly created pedal board (along with Voodoo labs power supply) next is compressor and tremolo pedals!!
I've seen a few of your videos on pedals and I wanted to get your advice on effects pedals, one I read about earlier is a Boss ME 80, do you think effects pedals are worth the money?
+J Wilder - multi effects units are typically very good value for money compared with stompboxes. multi effects are especially affordable second hand, it seems. it depends what route you want to take: multi or stompbox. If you get a smaller sized multi effects then you could still combine it on a board with stompboxes, if you then decide to get into stompboxes. I think multi effects are much better at delay and reverb type effects than they are at dirty sounds. Keep an eye out for an affordable second-hand Line 6 M9 unit; it's modest;y sized, has loads of stuff on it; and has a looper too.
J Wilder I'm probably late to your decision but as someone who owns a ME80, it is a great pedal, and I use it for modulation, the looper/expression pedal, delays, boost, comp and everything else except dirty sounds and just for the life of me I could could never get a good natural sounding dirt tone. I've used it through my Blues JR tube amp, my orange solid state, and vox modeling amp, it always sounds gritty fizzy and digital no matter how I play with it. So I just use dirt boxes of my choice before it to get my ds/od sound, and I use the various extra effects on the ME to dial on specifics
The TS9 is a classical overdrive hence it’s made to use in a crunchy amp, not in a clean amp, that’s why it sounds so bad in this video. But OCD is a modern overdrive,, ir sounds good in cleaning amps, TS9 is best for vintage music style and OCD for modern music.
Two completely different animals. Tube Screamer is best used as a clean boost to an already overdriven amp (volume up, gain down). OCD is best used as your source of dirt in front of a clean amp. Both great pedals, just very different.
I tried both but I'm only keeping the OCD. I can make the OCD sound like a Tube screamer(kinda) but I could not make a Tube Screamer sound like an OCD. I only got vintage pickups and a boutique clean amp, I need to go from clean to full blown metal. And the Tube Screamer just doesn't perform like that, even with Compressor and another Distortion pedal, which was horrible btw.
@@SaxJockey Can't an EQ pedal do that?

Why do you adjust both pedals at a time when you're just testing one of them? It was a bit confusing at times! Thanks for the review though.
im guessing he was setting similar tones on each pedal first, then switching between them
Oh dear...
Thank you for your time!!!
+Sostenidos Bruno y Maria My pleasure
Hey guys, this guy literally made me buy this pedal and had to do a review of myself on my youtube! (I am a beginner, dont hate ) lol
Fulltone OCD wins!
not even
Agreed. TS9 is overrated.
Pero para solear.. creo que más bien el ibanez es mejor en riff ritmica.. Saludos gringo!!
Apples and oranges really isn't it. Ideally you'd have them both on your board
adamwebb241 True
Sure. My comment was not critic to the video, just pointing out the differences between the pedals. I really like and appreciate this comparison videos, and this one is great to notice such differences
@@GuillermoZS Bull Shit,As much as I hate to admit it the OCD would replace my Tube screamer in a second...JUST SEND ME ONE!
Thank you for this video, I was trying to decide which of these to buy, now I think I have decided on the ocd, to play my Ibanez through, ha ha.
I have both, and i find the OCD has the tube screamer plus a little more oomph.
When you say first...means first from the amp or from the guitar?
Have them both on my pedalboard. The best of both worlds.
FET's as diodes is not what's doing it. You still have three turned into two terminal silicon device doing the clipping.
WOW. They sound almost identical sometimes. I own a Timmy and an OCD and love them both. Never had a TS but i'm sure I'd like it.
TS9 creamy and warm.. beauty
OCD agressive and lot of character!
I guess the only way to make a "true" comparison of the tone difference would be to have a bypass loop that switches between them, or by switching cables. etc.
The 2.0 OCD's (I cant speak for the older models) can do both true bypass and enhanced bypass, they both work really well
Interesting comparison. Sounds like the OCD can do more (more distortion). But the Tube Screamer sounds more natural when playing blues. The irony is that the OCD has a extreme tube-like sound. I'd go for the OCD.
The OCD is harsher sounding, but that doesn't mean its bad. It may cut through better when you are in a band setting.
Not really, the tube screamer is intended to cut through because it boosts mid frequencies. OCD can get lost in a band setting unless you have an amp with plenty of mids.
I own both, and love them both.
Nice work, great comparison!
OCD is the best. TS has it uses to tighten up certain amps, but a straight up OD pedal I'll take the OCD any day. Its got that smooth warm sound of a good vintage amp and has amazing crunch with a Tele or Les Paul.
My ocd sounds like heavy ass distortion with my guitar xD. I want a very soft overdrive now... which one should i get?
Even on LP?
Nice review!
Which version did u use (OCD)?? Thanks:)
Ts9 has more warm middle
Philip Brister The OCD Is a belter!
HOLA AMIGO, COMPRE UN OCD FULLTONE EL DE TU VIDEO, CON EL FENDER PRO JUNIOR IV y AL USAR EL OCD EMPIEZA UN RUIDO COMO A QUEMADO, ES EL ÚNICO PEDAL QUE ME HACE ESO EN EL PRO JUNIOR IV ES NORMAL?
i play thrash metal
i have an esp ltd ec1000 and i use boss ds-1 distortion, but it sounds too weak to me.. so i decided to buy an OD
wich one is better ?
your opinion? ocd or ibanez?
OCD has more gain, but Tubescreamer is a classic!!
The OCD is way better. It has a more opened sound and the tube screamer sounds like it's in a box, and it sounds small imo
you know you can play chords right?
SIMON SMITH TU AMPLIFICADOR ES UN FENDER BLUES DELUXE REISSUE? BUSCO UN SONIDO CLEAN TWANG FENDER CLASSIC,
¿SERA MEJOR EL QUE TU TIENES o EL FENDER PRO JUNIOR IV LTD?
No le grites, prro
Both a good and grab what works for you. peace.
Hello Simon Smith,
I saw some guitarist using 2 Overdrive pedals for boosting, more gain. I wondered why they don't use 1 distortion pedal with a lot of gain and modify the distortion knob to get the sound that they want to instead of using 2 Overdrive ones. Does it really work out and make the difference? I genuinely don't get this technique.
Hope you clarify it for me
Thank you so much
Puedes traer pedales genericoa de Aliexpress?
why do we suppose all of the nuanced-feedback noise going on in between switching???
like, why would your amp make noise when you get a text on your phone?
Im getting the ocd and use it as my drive or distorion pedal.
Wondering which of these would give a DSL100H a little more push on the classic gain (green) channel? Playing largely Punkish songs. (Read Bad Religion, Methadones, etc). Not sloppy screaming punk. THANKS!
half the time i cant tell which one U R using
I have always thought the Tubescreamer is an overrated pedal. Many people seem to love it though. However, I LOVE the OCD!
the OCD seems to have more gain
HOLA SIMON SALUDAME
¿EL IBANEZ TS9 PEDAL ES EL MEJOR QUE EL TS808?
Nice. What version is the OCD?
+Ed “Junkman” Veld V4
"Classic".The TS-9, originally released in 1982 - granted. The OCD is only out since 15 years; the first version was in 2005. More a modern classic. Especially when the video came out, it was just ten years on the market.
If you want more tonal options, OCD all the way, it's a welcome addition to my newly created pedal board (along with Voodoo labs power supply) next is compressor and tremolo pedals!!
I have an ocd V2 and whether I flip the switch to HP or even LP the led stays blue as opposed to a red led for hp ive seen more frequently
Why TS9's led has to be without any brightness? Only con of this pedal.
OCD in lp setting gets you a ballpark bluesbreaker tone.
I personally prefer the OCD. Great video!
I think TS for low gain and OCD for high gain. I like to have two drive pedals in my chain. That's what I'm going for.
I've seen a few of your videos on pedals and I wanted to get your advice on effects pedals, one I read about earlier is a Boss ME 80, do you think effects pedals are worth the money?
J Wilder Hiya. I think SOME are yes. What are you looking to get? An ME 80?
Simon Smith yep. But I know a guy who has a Boss G10 second hand. I read reviews for the ME 80 and got good reviews.
Should have had the OCD in LP since HP has too much headroom.
Two completely different animals. Tube Screamer is best used as a clean boost to an already overdriven amp (volume up, gain down). OCD is best used as your source of dirt in front of a clean amp. Both great pedals, just very different.
To me the OCD can sound like the TS but with more versatility. Just leave it on HP and turn down the Tone knob. I had both, but kept the OCD!
Crank that boutique clean amp and slam it with the TS9.
OCD kills the TS
Boosting the OCD with the TS9
TS all the way, a real overdrive. The OCD is a kind of semi-distortion for me. And sounds great also.
The tone is different from the pedals. You should have set it before ( less on the OCD )
With high gain the OCD ruins the TS the sweet mids and highs are just choked out
