Wicked. Thx for the comment. I’ve got an original block letter 5150 Wanted a Fortin 33, it they’re so hard to get and so expensive. But I’m gonna try this pedal I guess.
Colin you are the reason I bought a tubescreamer. And it’s the best guitar related purchase I’ve ever made. It’s one of those “never fail” pedals. No matter what gear I use with it, it sounds amazing. So if you’re ever in Manchester or Nottingham, let me know. I owe you a few drinks.
Man Im so so glad I bought a guitar this past January. I absolutely love learning to play and learning everything I can about playing, gear, theory, all of it!
Great videos, Colin! I've been an acoustic player since 1974, and only entered the world of electric guitar a couple of years ago. Your videos are very clear, concise, and to the point - very helpful indeed for noobs like me. And you're an engaging speaker & teacher! Keep it up, man!
I personally use my Tubescreamer as a boost for my Marshall valve amp when playing at home or smaller gigs for that breakup sound you can only achieve at higher volumes on a valve amp. Drive low, level high, tone just past midway creates this later seventies screaming sound that sounds much more natural when combined with the Marshall’s gain than just using a distortion through the clean channel. To me, it’s the best pedal ever, and the only pedal I ever use.
My tube screamer is my extra preamp valve, switchable, in my custom amp😉no mid hump and no 'digitalistic' tone. And as always great video Colin, fan of the channel. I learned many things from you. Thank you! Cheers! ALL THE GAIIIIINNNNN
I have a Behringer Vintage Tube Overdrive , it was so inexpensive thought I would spring for one . I was totally surprised at how good it sounds with my Bugera 1990 . Sound wise it's in the ball park with the Ibanez Tube Screamer .
Thanx colin....thanx to u n jake for dialing in tubescreamers.....Not only have I gotten the sounds that has eluded me for years but I also added the fuzz n odb back on the board. ...ur video has done wonders...so I thank u sir..... godbless n stay safe. We always tend to forget gratitude. But this is from me from all of us
Thanks man needed this tutorial for real. I bought mine years ago because I heard SRV used it, however I never used it. I will now after watching your video
I remember forty years ago as a young man, my orders came through that I was being sent to Holy Loch, Scotland. "Great!" I thought, at least I would be going somewhere that spoke and understood english. Boy was I wrong. I got sorry tired of asking the locals to repeat themselves that I eventually gave up altogether. It took some time, but eventually I got what they were saying {well, most of the time}. Best people on earth, I miss their hospitality {the girls of Glasgow especially!}.
Awesome video! When people talk about wanting a “transparent overdrive” I tell them you need two things: An amp that already has some hair on it...and a TS-9. 😎
Its funny everyone else that makes a video about "Overdrive" pedals use them as a Distortion pedal using the gain or drive to generate the distortion. IMO you are doing it right pushing the front end into breakup and this is how ive always thought they were supposed to be used. Great job i wish you did the overdrive pedal shootouts the others are doing.
Love my TS-808 for just boosting my heavy gain guitar sound without really distorting it anymore than needed. The sound becomes so much more defined and not as muddy as it was without the tube screamer. The settings I use are as follows: Engl Invader amp, heavy lead channel, about 3-4 on gain. EQ: 3,5,6. TS-808: gain: 0, tone: 6, level: 10. Works wonders for both rhythm guitars and lead guitars in my Melodeath band!
Hey Colin....thank u for this video....I totally cut off the drives from the ibanez ones for bass and guitar n now the bass sounds awesome... thank u sir..... amazing...guess am gonna do that for the darkglass...Wampler n metal zone... thanks once again
I bought a tube screamer as a noob then I bought a tweed champ, turns out I don’t really need a tube screamer for that amp, it has a beautiful overdrive all on its own. Still very helpful thanks.
Great video! I love the tube screamer. It's one of my favourite pedals and it is pretty much always on when I'm using a high gain sound. I own a micro dark (bought off of yours and Pete Cottrell's recommendations) and I found it to be too bassy for my tastes, so what I did was I have the shape set right in the middle, the gain around 1 oclock, a tube screamer set with almost no gain, high tone, high volume, and then a EHX soul food (klone) with tone at 1, volume at 1030, and gain at 130. What this does is cut off a lot of the booming low end of the amp, but not push it into oversaturation. I like the sound of the soul food's drive, so blending that with the orange's natural distortion sounds good. WIth the mid range hump of both pedals and the added highs from the tone knobs being pulled fairly high, but with the TS attenuating some of that high end, you get an aggressive, but not harsh sounding high end, extremely punchy mid range, and very tight low end. I was struggling to get the sound I was looking for from the micro dark until I blended both of these pedals together.
Superb demo and very clear explanations. Shows Chappers up for the shrednut that he is - compared to his demo with 'The Captain' this is so much better, it's in a different universe. Top marks.
The Boss DS2 is also really interesting for this same application. Using the same setting on the DS1 mode really lets the mids and harmonics sing. It's got slightly more mids than a standard DS1 and it shelves off some low end too just as the TS. Always get compliments on my tone when using the DS2 like this in front of my JVM210
Colin: I'd love to hear your thoughts on how to properly balance the EQ on each pedal on a board for them to work well with each other, rather than sounding like a loud mess of effects.
Hmm. Yeah I foubd a very useful trick for when this happens. It was so simple too. One of those things that was like duh. It's really simple. FUCK the Bozo's. Right my guy?
If you have a distorted sound, and you want a smoother distorted sound, the overdrive pedal will do it ~ JCM 800 (2210) Marshall with Boss overdrive (or Tube Screamer) will give you a Matthias Jabs type sound.
That's a great review and advice. I noticed my bass response attenuated (or obliterated in my opinion) and wasn't sure that was intended. You got right to it perfectly. I'm subscribing if just to say thanks but sure you'll help in the future.

Wicked. Thx for the comment. I’ve got an original block letter 5150 Wanted a Fortin 33, it they’re so hard to get and so expensive. But I’m gonna try this pedal I guess.
TS9 has been the star of my tone for decades. When playing with a band, the Tube Screamer is an absolute MUST for me. Dont leave home without it!!
You're detailed educational videos is unlike most other gear channels. Keep it up man we appreciate it.
Jacob Reece You’re written English is weird!!
these really are some of the best gear videos out there. i don't play "metal" per se but i always learn something here anyway

Could you do a tutorial on how to get your hair?
EElectric_M Just don't abuse gain, or you will not be haired.

Have you stuck with it?
@@mrpotato4441 That's what I'm thinking man
This is actually a good idea for a video. I never thought about how I may he using od wrong, just shrugged off a pedal as bad.
i wanted to hear directly so i click at 1:08 , then i ask to myself "why does he hold a banana?"
Haha

Real nice guy here. No attitude whatsoever; this is what I love 😌
Apparently "tube screamer" in Scottish is "chib scrimer"
Great videos, Colin!

What is the better option for a boost: TS9 or TS808 ??
For an 80's Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Tone (not a modern down-tuned/djent tone)
Why not both?
idk but i want to
Just get the Copy, the demon tube screamer has a TS9 and TS808 setting
Probably TS9
Either will work. You won’t notice a difference.
Thank you Colin. Great video. Concise. Perfect explanation. No shredding. Informative. YTube providers need to check this out!

Tube screamer work great for thrash metal also. Kirk hammett used them all the time back in the day.

My favourite OD to Boost for a metal tone is a Boss SD-1 no gain full volume and 11 o’clock on the tone
I use a Hotone Blues for this very purpose (bought it based on your recommendation) - gives a reasonably good immitation of the SRV tone. I'm now trying to tune my Marshall Jackhammer to do the same sort of thing, but with a more Marshall sound (using a Blackstar HT1, so my tonal ranges are limited).
Really helpful thanks
This is really useful stuff
Good vid thanks!
Guitar has some sweet articulation to it!
damn this is very good video. I actually learned nice and easy! thank you!
Important question... how do you approach this when using a solid state amp (I use the katana 100 and often use the overdrives built in via boss tone studio). Curious if that changes the technique?
that is one thick neck
