    *Excellent* review as always :) (Like how that looks with the white PG and Trussrod cover. She's a looker for sure. It would be interesting to see you insert a high(er) end P90 in one of those some day in the future. Thinking of doing the same on my "Gitargeek-blue" version) :D (not because I do not like how the original sounds, but because it would be fun to try, and to compare)

      Thanks Per! Yes, I do like the looks of this one too. It actually looks like the sky outside as I'm typing this answer to you, lovely :) I can't decide whether I prefer it over the Ferris Blue aesthetics or not though! But yes, maybe it would be cool to put another pickup in there. I do dig the stacked one, but I think I'd prefer a genuine P90. If I get to keep this guitar I might do just that! Any pickup recommendations?

    • @pstraums
      @pstraums 3 года назад +2

      @@RichWordsMusic No pickup recommendations I'm afraid. I've only got 2 other guitars with P90-ish pickups. The Lee Mahlia explorer (Gibson P94T pickup sitting in the neck and the blue HB Ferris LTD ed) So that could mean that I have no real experience with a "true p90". My gut feeling say put a Gibson P90 in there since it's a "hommage" guitar anyways, but thats based on *no* knowledge or skill whatsoever :) Happy easter 2 u and yours, from Norway

      @@RichWordsMusic SD Antiquity is the normal answer for anyone after a Gibson sounding p90, but it feels a bit expensive for this guitar (130 Euro ish). I've got a 2009 Gibson Dogear that is allocated for another project, but measures at 8.7 DC resisitance, which might get fitted temporarily.
      For the DC FAT I'm looking at Bloodstone Guitar Works P90. A single dogear is around 55 Euro and you can choose the spec you want.
      www.bloodstoneguitarworks.com/shop/p90pickupset They also do a premade loom (CTS pots)to replace the Alpha Volume pot and Push/pull Tone pot in the FAT which iirc has 60mm spacing like the Gibson. Probably under 100 Euro for PuP & loom, which feels more paleatable.

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  3 года назад +1

      @@pstraums Hmm, these are good thoughts though, so thank you. You know, I'm a massive fan of The Strokes' early records and I loved the P94 sound Nick Valensi had on those. But I think they're too big to fit in this guitar without mods. Maybe you're right and a Gibson dogear P90 is the way to go - that's the original after all! I'll consider my options. The same to you, have some nice and relaxing time off and make music if you can! :)

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  3 года назад

      @@UltimateAccuracy Great advice, thanks! I'd never heard of Bloodstone, but that sounds like it could be the ideal fix... I'll look into that and see if I can find any playing samples. A standard Gibson P90 might also do the job. As I said before, that's kind of the the classic that people aspire to with P90s. The Seymour Duncan is probably great, but as you say, it would be a pricey addition. That said, if it's so good it's worth it...

    Ace as always. Thank you for the effort, that enables the 1:1 comparison. Here it Sounds to me, that the Ferris has slightly more Bass and the Benton Blue maybe a bit more even mid and treble. Or is that due the (maybe newer) Strings?

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  3 года назад

      I was wondering if the Ferris is a tiny bit darker, but you're right that the strings could be a factor. They're brand new on the Benton Blue, and not on the Ferris... maybe I will do a full-length comparison and then I would change them!

    Got this in Cherry.. BUT loving the look of the Benton Blue... it really pops..!!!
    The've really got the basics right here with the DC Junior... Slab of wood, comfortable glued-in neck, solid hardware... What's not to like?
    I might just get this lovely Blue Meanie, get my dremmel out and mod it with a tele neck pup... I think it'll make a killer axe.

      Yep, the Benton Blue is a lovely, vibrant color, and I totally agree about the basics... they've focused on getting everything right that they needed to make a killer Junior-type. The cool thing about a P90 PU is it is a very simple design made from materials that are in the low end of cost. Probably about $5 tops in parts. My point is the difference in a gourmet P90 and the one in a Harley Benton is totally inconsequential. What small things not done to the guitar to make it a killer player are not beyond the skills of a first timer to do. In short the difference between the HB and an LP Junior are just not there hearing both in a band at a club.The guitar really is the best deal for a Pro instrument on the planet. Underline Pro guitar,

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  3 года назад +3

      I would have to agree! I'd have no hesitation in using this guitar for live work because as an overall package it's got everything you need, and most importantly the nut is well cut and the tuners hold! No one (apart from maybe a few fellow guitarists) in the crowd will know or care about what you're playing anyway. A good setup can often be all it needs to take a cheap guitar up to a level where 99% of players would be more than happy with it. The one issue I have with the pickup here is that the stacked P90 isn't really the real thing, and doesn't have the tonality I love about a 'real' P90... but putting another in there would do that job if I ever wanted it, and it wouldn't need to be a 'boutique' one either.

    • @Paul_Lenard_Ewing
      @Paul_Lenard_Ewing 3 года назад +2

      @@RichWordsMusic I basically agree with you I have reissue 59 LP Special which I am sure you know is a 2 PU Jr. I also have an old Ibanez Jet King with I am fairly sure has stacked P90's because they very quiet. I find the stacked P90 is a thing onto itself because the PU design pushes the mids way up in the tone. Both sound great.
      The only thing that really matters on a guitar is that it uses quality woods that are fitted well. One can Plek the guitar and change the hardware and PU's. One can adapt to different scales and feels on a neck. I use 9 guitars live containing 24", 25, 24 3/4" and 25 1/2" scales. I have HB's. P90's, Tele, Strat, Gretch, Ric and Gold Foils.in them. which sounds best in the tune I use it determines my choice. Most are in very obscure guitars like a Airline H88 Stratotone Doublet. The wood is killer and with care you can update things like PU's etc, and hide them under period correct covers etc. Rock was built on 'If it sounds good it is good' A player with series chops in '51 would had nothing but disdain for a Tele. The guitar made from a plank of wood from the lumber yard and cut to shape with a hand saw. lol

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  3 года назад +1

      @@Paul_Lenard_Ewing "If it sounds good, it is good" - I like that! Yes, I agree. If you start with a decent and resonant wood base, everything else can be changed/upgraded later depending on a player's needs and desires. It is nice to have a good selection of instruments to choose from, though. I've just googled your Airline H88 Stratotone Doublet... that's something I've never played anything close to, but would love to one day. I have played an Ibanez Jet King, and really liked it. I might pick one up one day, but they rarely come up used in this neck of the woods. Bottom line it's never been a better time to be a guitar player, as there are so many great guitars out there nowadays at affordable prices! We're really spoilt for choice :)

Interesting insight about the stacked pickup feeling generic. Thanks for doing it and also compare. Indeed it can be seen it is a slightly shade of blue, go figure. I will have to buy one of those juniors, but after your reviews although this one is beautiful I am beginning to lean towards the SC or the DC FAT-free :) Cheers

    In the video, Benton's looks a little lighter light blue.

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  Год назад +2

      Yes, the Benton Blue is lighter and also quite a bit brighter, and the white scratchplate goes really well with it too. The story I heard is that the original Ferris Blue run was going to be HB's take on Pelham Blue, but the factory sort of messed up the color and it became Ferris Blue after that. Overall, I prefer the Benton Blue/white plate match...

    Again, I’m not hearing much, if ANY, difference in coil tap mode from full Humbucking...
    IF there IS then it’s something that could easily be replicated by dialling the Tone control IMHO

    • @UltimateAccuracy
      @UltimateAccuracy 3 года назад +3

      There's not a huge difference. On mine the Humbucking mode cuts the top end a little, slightly reduces perceived drive, but also feels less dynamic. I very rarely use it.

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, I agree, the difference is minimal. On the humbucker mode I hear a bit more output, a bit less top end, less dynamics, and that's about it. It doesn't help for the higher gain modes either, as it has a higher noise floor! So yes, it's something you could replicate with the tone knob. My Epiphone Les Paul with a coil split is totally different - that has two very different sounds (proper humbuckers and a fat Tele-type single coil sound) but a consistent volume level.

Firstly, the difference between the two pickup modes on the Benton Blue is significantly more pronounced to me (OK, from basically non-existent to almost non-existent, but it's still a difference!). Secondly, the push-pull knob is the other way round on the Benton Blue - push down for humbucker. On the Ferris Blue, you pull up for the humbucker.
