This is such a beautiful piece of equipment and its wonderful to hear a radio sounding so very good after all these years, its lovely to watch that signal meter jump up and down,i would so love to own one of these radios and be able to come up on the air every day on it and announce to everyone what i was using :-) i think i would have a lot of interested hams listening to me !!!
Thanks for posting your video. I picked up a beautiful Rockwell Collins KWM-2A, power supply, speaker and all yesterday and in your video, you mentioned using the jacks in the back instead of the 3/16 inch MIC plug (which I don't have) make me look in the schematic and see that Phone Patch and PTT can be accessed thru the RCA connectors which allowed me to get on the air. I sure don't know why Collins insists on using that 3/16 inch plug instead of a 1/4 inch. Thanks again.
I think it is because those 3/16 inch microphone jacks are the standard in the aviation world. And Collins has the vast majority of their business from the aviation world, especially in the Fifties during which the KWM-2A was developed. So they kind of stuck to that 3/16 plug concept. But you are right, those RCA jacks on the back are parallel to it, so that is the way to go. Cheers.
I still have KWM-2 (non-A) in storage back in the US but could not bring it with me. I am living in Russia now. I loved the style of the S-Line and dreamed about having one since I was a Novice at 10y.o. in 1959. I ended up with several, mostly surplus and was able restore them easily because there were a lot of surplus parts available. It is not as super performance as a modern receiver like K3 Elecraft but there was less noise then. The audio quality coming and going sounds as good as the feel and appearance, which is very good. I had the noise blanker, station control/speaker and Waters speech processor, 30L-1 and power supply. The 30L-1 was simple to tune, reliable and small and low distortion if the correct special cable length was used between the linear and transceiver.
Beautiful piece of equipment. Sadly you dont find quality like that anymore, and if some think this isnt quality, then why is it still working as if it was just pulled out of its box?.
Have a bunch of Collins radio equipment from cleaning out an estate including 2 sets of gold dust twins not sure on functionality ... Any clue on price and where to sell other than eBay ?
Hola!!!

Good video. Modern solid state rigs just on have that warm, quality sound that the tube rigs had.
