Why Fragrances get Reformulated

- In this video I talk about the 3 main reasons why perfumes get reformulated. What once use to smell great nowadays smells mediocre, and that is mainly because of material regulations and bans. IFRA (International Fragrance Association) is the main entity which controls such regulations. Another Key player when it comes to changes in perfumery are big companies such as L'Oreal and Estee Lauder. Tune in for more details

About this channel: I talk about designer and niche perfumes. My reviews include fragrances from brands like Chanel, Guerlain, Tom Ford, Dior, Roja Dove, Hermes, Lancome, Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Dusita, Papillon, Parfum d'Empire, Armani, Prada and many more. My favourite notes are oud, vanilla, jasmine, rose, ambergris, benzoin, iris, cedar, vetiver, sandalwood and tobacco. I do most complimented lists, top 5, top 10 and top 20, long lasting perfumes, 5 stars perfumes, perfumes I love, best brands, worst brands, summer scents, fall scents, winter scents spring, scents, sexy scents, etc. I love most fragrance families, especially the leather, chypre, woody, floral and oriental. I also enjoy fougere, citrus, green, fruity scents. Not the biggest fan of aquatics, sweet and gourmands fragrances but will share a few thoughts on them anyway. By watching my videos you'll be able to find the perfect scent for your personality, for different occasions, dates, office, romantic settings, bed time, gym, hot and cold climate, regardless of age and gender. Your support means a lot to me, if you enjoy think about subscribing and hitting that like button 👋😎 Хобби
The reason for “reformulations” is simple... greed. The weaker the scent, the more you spray, the faster you empty the bottle, the sooner you have to repurchase.
Yeah man that's pretty much how big companies stay relevant and increase their asset value...
Yes, but in the long run that hurts business. Most people will catch on to this trend of weak fragrances and stop buying them and look for other alternatives. Most people want their money’s worth when buying any product
Plus, less money required to actually make the fragrance
I’m sure in some cases but a lot has to do with chemicals or natural materials being banned so they have to be replaced. Also some natural materials become more expensive so they replace with a synthetic one also at times they change it on purpose to make it more Mainstream as tastes change. There are many reasons
You said it all.
Because L'Oréal and Estee Lauder reformulate a lot of masterpieces, I have refused to buy their products, altogether! I'm done!
And this is the way to fight it! If, and only if, the parties responsible for canceling are themselves CANCELED, will this ever be changed. Just make sure those parties know the real reason why their values are deteriorating. Otherwise they will make up their own false narrative to explain it.
I would like to do the same. How do we find out what perfume brands have been bought out by them?
IFRA wants our wellbeing as much as Google wants to protect small creators by removing the dislike count 😂
the why does middle eastern houses perfumes is still strong & long lasting yet more affordable? simple answer: its greed of these designer & some niche brands..
Great video, thanks for your insight. It’s sad to see what’s happening to the art of perfume making. So many fragrances now smell like they were made in a lab instead of a perfumery. I wonder if L’Oreal & Estée Lauder also influenced IFRA to restrict natural ingredients so they have an excuse to use cheaper synthetics, therefore make more money.
Greed destroys everything. Sadly.
I hope you try Le Labo Myrrhe 55...a great 12+ hour long journey, i love it. One of the best modern creations imo
I’ve adored many scents that were reformulated. I wish I’d known it was going to happen so I could have stocked up. It’s the worst to realize what you cherish is gone for good, and I wish it was illegal.
Thank you for this video.

Ta chaîne youtube est une pépite, merci encore pour tes vidéos de qualité !
Amazing. Well informed!!!
Regulations that aim to ban carcinogenic ingredients is a good move. People would feel better knowing that the fragrance makers comply with health regulations and a perfume won't cause potentially contribute to cancer.
Another issue is that perfume should not be applied on skin because the ingredients that fall under the term of "perfume" could be anything - including potential hormone disruptors and carcinogens. If people didn't apply perfume on skin, they could probably avoid the skin allergies. It'd also increase the longevity of perfume - Dior perfumes can last one month on clothes.
Moreover, perfumes should not be over sprayed - this could cause allergies, headaches, and health problems to other people who have to breathe in someone's perfume.
Side note: hot guy alert
Thank you for a good piece of information. Reformulations suck, totally.
Interesting and really original idea for a video! Hope you’re doing ok ❤️
Great informative video. I noticed that Fahrenheit doesn’t smell like it used to anymore. It smells very similar but without that petrol note being as strong . It just doesn’t have the bite it used to
Sad but true..
Confinement du 20 mars 2020 : La notification qui fait du bien ! 🤹♀️🤸♂️☀️
Merci ;)
You are so right!! I am really upset about this
very interesting thank you very much for this video
Dear Dimitri, Thanks for giving us an insight into fragrance reformulations and giving us information about other brands. Curious to know please can you recommend your favourite Patchouli and Oud and Patchouli and Leather from your collection. Thanks a million
Hey man, thank you for the comment. Nice choices of notes, I m a freak for all three of them.. So far my best oud is Sahraa Oud, best Patchouli is Psychedelique by Jovoy and best leather is definitely Anubis by the house of Papillon, my girlfriend prefers Tuscan Leather though lol. Take care
I was arguing with someone today about this, I was saying kilian fragrances aren't as good as they used to be and they were saying kilian NEVER reformulates fragrances ever haha they definately arent as strong or long lasting as they used to be
This is very true. All Killian fragrances have been castrated. They have good openings and then fade away in less than hour to become a skin scent. That's how they do it now - tempt you with an opening and then you need to reapply in a few hours.
I was just saying 🤷 😕 this kilian fragrances are getting thinner, not as strong or long lasting as they were years ago...Very disappointed 😔 edp"s are smelling like drugstore edt's....I started buy fragrances from Dubai...luxurious ❤
The saddest part about IFRA is that all of the perfume companies are apart of it. They have created their own rules.
Guerlain extreme used to be so strong. Have a new bottle and i swear its not as strong as before. Thought i was crazy. Lost my smell or something. But now i understand...
Sam here, friend. I’ve lost that lovin’ feeling 🎶😩
Just bought Lolita Lempicka. It's terrible and the store won't let me return it.
'Because some guy/girl decided that their allergy was everybody's problem.'
Haha savage!
Can you please talk about popular fragrances that might get Reformulated?
Certainly!
It's easier to talk about popular fragrances that haven't been reformulated. The list is probably empty.
👍👍
I'd like to start an organization that will ban public farting. I'm allergic to farts. I'd call it the International Fart Reduction Agency.
Many thanks for the video. I just bought Cuir Ottoman from Parfum D´Empire which I love but this time I feel that it has much more citrus in the beginning and it is somehow plain. I am not a specialist but I would say this was reformulated. Do you know this house?
Hey Sonia, I love Parfum d'Empire, Cuir Ottoman has been out for almost 15 years therefore its a mathematical certainty that it went through a few reformulations. I only tried the latests version and did not find it as amazing as the reviews state.. very unfortunate.. My favourites from the ones I tried are Musc Tonkin, Le Cri, Azemour and Tabac Tabou ;)
@@dimitrisignaturescent1766 Thank you, I was not afraid of the fact that perfumes are reformulated so often
Hello Dimitri, I just have a question :
I see that you have a lot of fragrance samples, aren't you afraid that the scent will deteriorate over time? I read that between one and tree years old the scent of perfumes could change
Thank you in advance !
The scent will definitely oxidize over time, the reason I own so many samples is because they allow me to decide whether a certain perfume is worthy of a full bottle purchase. The ones I don't enjoy I simply keep in a drawer and forget about 😅
@@dimitrisignaturescent1766 Where do you get your samples from?
I too, only wanna buy the best after sampling and not have a lot of bottles gathering dust.
What about roja I was thinking getting one from them
Hi Dimitri, what about Amouage, are they still good/worthy?? Rgds
Amouage is still good ;)
Skull and roses from ed hardy is one of them it use to smell like versace dylan blue now it smells like a lemon sent that fades in to a very weak shower jel smell with a kinda wet dog smell mix in
Hehehehe‼i love your descriptors *woof*
Roja dove is good??
Unfortunely i'm afraid quality perfumery is dying as since the pandemia the ingredients came from china now...cheap and poor quality.
Pandemic has nothing to do with it. Greed has.
After hearing everything you said. The first house I thought of is Creed. With its new owner, I wonder how the batches will be from now forward.
It won't get any better thats for sure...
@Dimitri Signature Scent I agree. I expect more mass appeal and synthetic scent. I guess time will tell. Stay safe.
@@CharBar07 thanks man, you take care ;)
@The Generic Reploid afraid really isn t a term I ever used. I'm all for change when it adds value instead of substracting it. The point of the video is to explain how reformulations work, no more no less
@The Generic Reploid unfortunately money plays a huge part in all of this, just take Tom Ford s private Blend as an example, they now release Intense versions of most of their perfumes for an extra 100+ dollars. Those Intense versions are actually what the fragrance use to be before they were bought out by Estee Lauder. They they cut down on formula cost for the regular private blends and then create a new product labeled INTENSE which will make them tons of money with zero marketing cost... Gravy.. Now its up to you to discover brands that are actually worth the asking price, I sure did.
Are all mugler perfumes reformulated or just alien? 🥺
Hard to say, most likely all get reformulated in time due to regular restrictions on certain materials
Allergens do not only effect the wearer, but could effect those the wearer is around. I would hate if what I chose to wear negatively effected people I was around.
I want to sue people who fart near me. It really is rude. And I'm allergic to farts as well.
I am still upset on Abercombie, for starting their Fierce as a real beast, and today you pay like 80 Euro to get nothing, not even 10min lasting power. It is a criminal act!
I m with you man, it's very frustrating. Many amazing perfumes have been ruined shamelessly
I purchased parfum de Marley Layton recently and have been extremely disappointed and pissed off with it’s longevity about 2 hours and then becomes a very subtle skin scent on the dry down, such a waste of money and it puts you off trusting other top perfume houses.I’ve had perfume parlour scents that lasted longer and a fraction of the price so maybe that’s the way to go in the future.
Bring out a beast...then cut it's bollocks off....then bring out another beast.....and repeat the process!! We just have to get 200ml of beasts as soon as they come out
I’ve recently come to the very same conclusions! In the 1980’s I happily discovered some “beasts “ and should have seen this miserable reality of the perfume world we find ourselves (coughing and wheezing) in. I’m changing tactics from now on! When I find a beast I’ll buys as many bottles as the purse allows
Fragrances are watered down and nothing is done. I’ll bet my next check if all liquor were reformulated and watered down, people would be up in arms and screaming like hell
I was just telling this to my friend yesterday. First, they will use good ingredients and in proper concentrations and once it's gotten popular, they'll dilute it.
We may have tested it, or used it and loved it or just wanna buy it cause people hyped the actual juice but now we're left with a shadow of its actual self.
Exactly. That’s called cheating people. They are all crooks. I stopped buying cologne and will not buy another until performance is improved
My Dior Savage is so weak 😢😢now
Oui Salut mon amie . I agree this whole new wave or men's fragrance's over the last few years have been really disappointing . Your paying the same or now higher price for something hat is very lack luster -and doesn't last past 3' 4 hours or so. Yes being bought out by a major company 'can be a great thing or the worst thing to happen .
Hey man, its sad but unfortunately that's how major corporations grow their value, they see it as an investment.
Exactly -however 'a lot of times people shouldn't their sell their original product. Yes you will make 'if your smart a huge profit off of it' and use it to fund our own line ect ect 'where you wont have to change your product.
Always much love 2u
House Of Orto Parisi still maintains its nuclear level though..i guess we are all "late to the party"....😢😢 I see now how many Niche houses will accumulate dissapointed buyers AWAY from the designer houses...($$$$)
John Wick
Never again buying le labo
I fear Serge Lutens has been bought by Shiseido and it's already been reformulated to rats!
