I'm the bartender at the famous Gardenia Room in Hollywood - the longest-running Cabaret supper club in the country. Every once in a while George Chakiris will come into the club and quietly sit at the bar alone to watch a show, usually arriving only a few minutes before the performance begins. Always nice to chat a moment with him. He was 33 when he performed this piece on the Andy Williams Show. He's 85 now. Super nice guy, and ageless.
George Chakiris is is truly a gentleman. All the years I worked at Equity whenever he would call in about something he was polite and patient and would always ask me how I was doing! A great talent sadly not taken advantage of by Hollywood. He could do it all.
This man should have been a monster " star"; he could do it all, & he had class , looks, & style. ----Better than all of that, he's a genuine good guy. --------------------WolfSky9
I wasn't aware that George Chakiris was a singer. Like his other fantastic attributes - acting, dancing - he had a lovely voice too. The dancer extraordinaire is greatly remembered in films like West Side Story for which he bagged a supporting Oscar, Diamond Head in which he played alongside Charlton Heston, James Darren and Yvette Mimieux giving a riveting performance. He can also be spotted dancing alongside the gorgeous Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen prefer blondes when Monroe sings and dances to Diamonds are a girls best friend. He gave another fantastic performance with Claudia Cardinale in a European war-torn film. Above all, his dancing was superlative magic : those leaps, turns and jumps were all pure ballet. Mr. Chakiris was truly a treasure!!!
I don't think that's him singing. His singing in West Side Story is way different. The voice sounds more like Andy Williams and George is lipsyncing it.
That sounds nothing like Andy. Keep in mind that George was imitating a Puerto Rican accent when filming West Side Story. If you listen to his voice on records and in other films you will see that he does, in fact, have a rich baritone voice. This sequence was no doubt synched (because of the dancing) but that is definitely George singing. Andy has a wider vibrato and a different timbre.
He was gorgeous, a good singer, a great dancer. He had it all. They just don't make them like this gentleman any more.

George Chakiris--a pleasant singer, and one of the most elegant and graceful dancers in the world.

What a great era for television!! We turned on the variety shows in our living rooms………….and we were at a Las Vegas extravaganza !
Why wasn't he a bigger star? I think his agent was asleep at the wheel.
West side story choreography is a far cry from this one.... the guy has so much potential that he should’ve deserved a better choreography..
What a bad staging for such a wonderful and extraordinary man. pitty
Bs man.
