  • You can listen to Prince's music from any era and find hidden religious beliefs in the messaging throughout. Last time it was all about adult things, but something else turned people off of Prince... his willingness to share his religion, spirituality, and love of God with his audience. In this video, we discuss how this stigma became a thing, and why it really shouldn't matter.

I think his openness to share his beliefs in GOD through his art is one of the biggest reason why I love him so much.

He was the strongest person I have encountered in my adult life other than my mother. If you don't stand for something you will fall for anything. Today, people flock to Minneapolis to see all the places he grew up and lived. There will be a bench dedicated in his honor and a street renamed. Had he been weak none of this would be happening. He is a zeitgiest of our time. God only allows a few of those into the earth plane. He was rare.

so eloquently wrong, friend. "If you don't stand ..." was fairly mindless tripe often used to embolden a stubborn denial of reality....to crusade for an insignificant, or even false narrative. The saying "Better to be quite & thought a fool..than to open one's mouth & remove all doubt" would better serve the majority of Americans (and I'm referring specifically to the undereducated, science denying, trump voting...and yes, people that believe in angels.)
Give Prince his due if you find him inspiring..But please don't give credit to a nonexistent entity (god) whose believers not only long for the end of mankind, but work daily towards that end. It's time to grow the f-ck up!

I loved that Prince was religious. TBH Lovesexy saved me from suicide. I am alive because of that album. Now when I listen to that album, when the song "Lovesexy" comes on I get teary-eyed. I know EXACTLY what he's singing about.

Good topic. Threw me off at first with the title. To me It never bothered me , and sometimes I don't know why people complain. It seems sometimes people complain about his faith more than the lyrics he sang in the past. The thing Is a lot of times people don't really listen to lyrics they just jam to the music. back when Prince wrote on his face and wore those butthole yellow pant's threw me for a loop, but I have always stayed a fan.

Prince wasn't afraid to write & perform songs about God! That's what made him unique and a stand out. I Wanna Be Your Lover, made me a fan. He could jam & sing about issues of the day. And his love songs, smh! He'll always be my favorite male soul, pop, rock, blues, jazz and inspirational composer/performer! There'll never be another like him..

I loved the Religious messages from Prince. I study the similarities from different texts. I listen to Christian rap and was a Christian singer. God created music to praise Him. I'm glad there are independent labels that let artist express God in their own form. If your career doesn't have the Holy Spirit helper, how can we give good fruits back to God. I miss Prince, my dad and their messages of God's love for people.

Prince shared his love for God. Most people become very uptight, angry and immediately go on the defense when God is bought up, lets face it, man has become enemies with God. But Prince used music as a platform to open people's heart to the creator that they rebell against or are ignorant of. Drawing them to see His love and grace.❤ He kinda used it as a tool of evangelism, which is cool i think (and no, im not a jehovah witness, just making an observation).

I was very glad to hear about Prince's spiritual side as a J.W. most people call him a demonized devil worshipper and a prophet of Satan. I would like to see that rumor destroyed. As a person who makes such beautiful music as he does has to know his talent is a blessing from Jehovah God.

I loved him and his music from start to finish... and I always will. I admired that he brought God into his music in his way. I do not always agree with everything connected to religion but he did it his way, his thinking and style. One of my very favourite songs by him is "The Love We Make". I choose to think it is more spiritual than religious. Either way, every word that he sang in that song is pretty much how I believe also. It was ok by me that he talked and sang about God, love. sex, music...life!!! Good video as always and you make people stop and think!

I've always enjoyed the spiritual side of Prince. It was amazing to do the "God is Love, Love is God" chant and hearing thousands of others doing it. What an experience!!!!!
Though during the days of his fan club where we got to sit around and chat with him before the large crowd came in, he was a bit over excited about the Jehovah's witnesses in that stage of his life. That was a bit of a turnoff.
What shocked me the most was his last few albums. The spirituality came back to life and it got much less religious? Was he even a Jehovah's witness at the end of his life? Some of the things he said goes against their beliefs! "You are now in a place that does not require time time time"

This is a great video! Prince's consistency in his belief in the Most High is to be respected. He evolved, but never wavered. To me, whatever he did- the merging of the masculine and feminine, the musical metaphors, etc. were all to represent the wholeness of God. I think his strongest period of JW 'rhetoric' was still giving space for an evolution to come in. If that were not the case there would be no 3rd Eye Girl.
Why I would consider Prince to be spiritual as opposed to religious, is because though he had The Rainbow Children, 4 The Tears In Your Eyes and God, he didn't proselytize. The message was more important than who was delivering it, so it makes sense that he spoke long ago about not being concerned with record sales.
I would also consider him to be spiritual, because even as a JW his concept of God was not limited. The dude was brilliant in making you think a song about God was about something strictly carnal- which is actually proving his point. Listen to the delivery in the triple entendre of 'Revelation'. Sheer brilliance. And I will always point to 'Way Back Home' as being one of the clearest messages to God; everything he did in his life was utilized to find a path toward the Supreme Being. All these things we associated with him on Earth mean nothing in the end. He was just aiming to be with the 144,000, with the Creator. This is why I do not think he struggled when he left.
(To a comment you made about his records not selling as much from Rainbow Children on (because of his hardline stance), it is interesting that 'God' does not appear on the official RUclips channel when you search for it, but neither does '17 Days'. Hmmmmm...) Be well...

I started listening to popular music in 1981, when I was 11. One of the first songs I heard was Prince’s “Controversy”, in which he recites the “Our Father”. I thought it was so cool to hear that prayer in a pop song! That song got me into Prince. I was always aware of the religious and spiritual themes in Prince’s music, and it was obvious to me that Prince was very sincere in his religious beliefs. Prince mentions God on the 1999 album, and of course many of the songs on “Purple Rain” and so many other albums have spiritual messages.
“Controversy” and “When Doves Cry” videos both contain stained-glass windows, like a church. In WDC video, Prince rides his motorcycle under a bridge with graffiti that says “Love God”. That’s also the message that Prince signed on autographs and letters from the start of his career. Every Prince fan probably already knows that there are countless examples of religious imagery in various Prince songs. I believe that the “Controversy” album was when Prince began putting his faith into his music. Of course, Prince always had strong spirituality.
Prince’s strong faith in God and in the afterworld always made me love him all the more! I think it’s really brave and cool for Prince to put God into his songs and have countless people singing for God who might not even realize it. I was raised Catholic, I’m not super-religious, but I have always believed in God and had strong spirituality.
Prince’s bold statement of his faith in his songs always gave and still gives me hope and faith. “If de-elevator tries to bring you down...go crazy...punch a higher floor!” That is such an inspirational message that I say it to myself often. I love to watch the video of Prince performing the long version of “Controversy” live. Before he recites the Lord’s Prayer, Prince tells his audience: “If you believe in God, say it along with me.”
If you have great music like Prince did, why not use that music to praise God? Prince never used his religion in a way that was a turn-off, in my opinion. It was just: Love God, Love one another, have faith in Jesus/God, and believe in the afterlife. IMO, Prince was the best preacher I’ve ever heard! Prince was fun, and not sanctimonious. Prince used his music and his faith to spread a very positive message of love for God and love for all mankind. Prince’s spirituality helped to influence my own spirituality. Just one of the reasons that I love Prince so much, and will forever be his fan/friend. We need more positive messages like that in popular music, IMO, but no one could be quite as deep and profound as Prince.

I love his religious songs, they’re some of my favourites. I also love how in some songs he makes the religious meaning very subtle so you have to dig deeper to get it.
I guess maybe it would be annoying to someone who doesn’t believe in God though.
Like his overtly sexual songs, it’s another one of those things that I think is too radical for some people for it to be played on the radio.
It’s one of the things that sets him apart from other artists IMO too, because so many artists just sing about having a good time, relationships, etc. whereas his music is much deeper and has more meaning than that.

You're right it's always been there. It seems like he was not of this time. Totally fearless. Look how in 81 or 82 he talks of gun control and love of God and one another in The Second Coming. Look at what's happening in the world today. Students protesting outside The White House yesterday over gun control. Regardless of his religious affiliation the music throughout the years was maybe not popular but always always beautiful. For such a closed off individual (some say) he shared so much of his love of God with us. I just adore him even more for not being deterred that he'd get no airplay no record stores promotion. Many many of his lyrics could be turned easily into spiritual songs such as 4ever in My Life and any songs about Love which personally to me means God. Feel happy and sad at the same time talking about this. Just exploring this extraordinary man so much more after the fact. A joy. Love your Why Prince Sucks series. Thank you 👌💜

I agree with you that Prince was bold and fearless to put his love for God into his music. I always loved Prince for being so spiritual.
Interestingly, I was just recently listening to the “Controversy” album and the “Controversy” live show with “The Second Coming” and “Annie Christian”. Then the school shooting happened, and “Annie Christian” could not have been a more appropriate song to help process things. Prince’s music is prophetic and timeless. Prince was a wonderful messenger of God’s Love, through his music.

Thank God for the him singing God's praises. Those who condemned him will be condemned by God. God used him as a platform to spread the gospel about his kingdom. Ironic how the least person we'd expect to be a voice and vehicle for God have been. God picks and chooses who he wants to do his bidding which is to spread the word of God. I knew there was a reason other than his music that I loved him too. RIP Prince. He was a true soldier of the Lord. Even through his philanthropy he was doing the will of God. In his last days and at one of the last performances just before his death he says 'I've been transformed". Abba Yah thank you for sharing him with us and letting us be in his presence.

I dont do religion but that doesn't mean I am not open to the thoughts of others. And the music is beautiful. I have read the Bible several times, loosely studied other religions. Definitely not an organized religion person, but like a spiritual approach - but I really just say be good for goodness sake. He said in the beginning "my life with you I share." I DO applaud him for having the guts to talk about it. It was a part of him.

Hi Prince's Friend, we so Love your show and listen mostly every day or so. I Love these Controversial Discussions we have. And this being the one which is extremely Controversial. Yes it was a pleasant surprise when we first played "Controversy" the "Lord's Prayer" bang smack in the middle of the song, but how fitting for the title song. Prince was always the advocate and activist. Prince always said he Life was his Music and His Music his Life, a Musical Auto-biography so to speak. Being Christian ourselves and my hubby being a biblical times theologian. Listening to the lyrics of Prince's Songs and Spiritual Songs we found this evident that Prince not only celebrating and sharing his spirituality but also Prince was also exposing the fact that prayer and bible study had been banned in all public schools across America since 1962, as we hear in the album and song Sign O Times. Exposing the moral death and decay of America upto Prince's very sudden passing. Blessed be the Purple Angels 'Over That Rainbow' 🌈🌌🌈🌌💜😢 😢. An outstanding 'Wordsmith' and ever the Controversial. 💜 We Miss our dearly beloved so very much. Even though Prince is with us in Heart and Spirit in his Song, Verse, Music. I wrote a poem for Prince Rogers Nelson and had it printed by my Publishers in their themed anthologies. I will post it for you when I can hun. If you shun God that's your soul in jeopardy. His hands are free of your blood. He talked about Jesus like he was supposed to. I don't follow Jehovahs Witnesses but speaking up about God is always a great thing. It took guts to take that stand and even change some of the words to certain songs. I guess my bottom line is Prince lived his life his way and eventually the way God wanted him to. Love him or hate him, he is the man. Thank you Jesus for Prince 💜💜💜

In Toures book " I would die for u" he talks a lot about the messages Prince was possibly conveying with his lyrics and spiritual perspectives. His perspectives changed thru the years. Personally being exposed to some hard core religions as a youth I was so happy when Prince came out because some religious perspectives would be judgmental on rock and roll music, so it was like he made it ok. I like that he was always so spiritual because deep down we are all spiritual be-bugs and can relate to that, what I love ❤️ is his perspective in his last few CDs - anything tied to a specific dogma can feel repressive depending on the beliefs. I love ❤️ that Prince represented Love and I'm sure he had his own struggles, but in his last few CDs he's coming from a much more broad spiritual perspective which didn't seem to me to fit into a specific religious concept but more spiritual. All is one - which is true and Prince knew that and became quite evolved in his spiritual growth over the years. I'm not completely agreeing with his religious beliefs - but I do feel like he always tried to represent Love ❤️ and spirituality as our true essence. Even from the beginning of his career. Also I do love his symbol 0(-> the combination of the masculine and feminine energies being balanced. Isn't this what we are looking for in our time now. Prince is Love ❤️ it feels like Prince really intrigued us too because he showed us the amazing ability of creativity and as creative people what we can be at our best. The truth is he believed in himself and that was something he was showing us as friends - to believe in your self and your creative gifts. 💜 he broke barriers on stigmas and sexuality and record producers. He was able to channel love ❤️

I respected his position in his love for God at all times. I never thought for once that he was ever exagerative in his songs about God at any point. He was thankful and he was loving. All he wanted to do was to share his knowledge with the rest of the world that had been missing on knowing or getting to know God. Many of his songs had truth and meaning relative to our everyday lives with joy, sadness, friends, family, love, etc. It made for more hearfelt and soulful songs of which will never ever again be done by anyone else. Tears.

I don't understand why anyone wouldn't like him or any other artist just because they are to religious. That is their issue in my opinion because people pushing God out of our lives and world is one of the biggest problems we have in this world today so that is a insane reason not to like him. To me I loved his different types of music and how he expressed his religious beliefs. But to each their own. Lovesexy which is not one of my favorites for the record had a lot of religious tones to it... but none of that ever bothered me. I believe in God but not in organized religion myself, and I always dug the fact that Prince wasn't afraid to speak his mind freely. Just to let you know, Prince is an American icon. He was a musical genius no matter what he played. You sound like an atheist for talking about him putting his religious views in his music. You don't rag on someone for his religious views. The man connected with a wide variety of fan who probably never once concerned themselves with his political views. I've always been a fan of Prince and never once questioned what his religion was and still don't. I am a gulf war combat veteran and I've experienced many types of religions and have never once concerned myself with their religions. To me and probably many like me I concern myself with how genuine a person is no matter what his religion. Prince touched a lot of people and without a doubt has probably saved more lives with his music than any of us will ever know. There was only one Prince and I don't believe his shoes can or will ever be filled again. My heart goes out to his family and friends who knew just how special he was. Just take some time and look at all the great things he accomplished during his short time on this Earth. I'm not a religious man because of the evilness that I've experienced in my life but I can totally connect with Prince's music. Please change the subject of your discussion of him or people may get the wrong assumption and it may turn around and bite you in the ass . Let the man rest in peace , just never forget what he contributed to the music industry and be blessed that he lived during or time here on earth. May he never be forgotten and I pray that God cradles him in the palm of his hand until we meet again. Thanks for letting me speak my feelings. Forever a Prince fan and grateful for the joy he brought to us all.
    Thanks ,
    Andy C

I kinda get your points, but as an artist you write from the heart, so if God inspired him then thank God for that. The cross was my favorite song growing up, the words are so powerful. Maybe we didn't realise it at the time but these are reasons we loved him. I remember when I took the leap to say he's singing about God, I felt so proud like I was a music detective and I had followed his musical clues. If Prince lead you to God, then you can thank God for Prince .

This is a very interesting topic for me. As an atheist, I have never cared for Prince's overt, religious messages. I respect the fact he just didn't care and expressed himself freely but, it was never my cup of tea. I could've done without it. Strangely, it still didn't really take away my enjoyment of his music. I think The Rainbow Children is a brilliant album if taken solely as a piece of music. If I look too deep into what he was trying to say though, I won't enjoy it as much.

Yeah, I guess I kind of see it like you too. Mentioning Rainbow Children is especially interesting to me in that regard as it is so overtly religious (and I'm very much just not), but he seemed to be so especially inspired in that album and I just love the album for that.

jaydy71 Yeah, the thing with Prince is that, even though I personally don't believe in the things he's saying, he's so genuinely passionate and inspired and that in itself is quite infectious. It doesn't matter if his music is religious or not. Those elements are always there and that's why I'm such a big fan, regardless of whether or not I particularly like or believe in the things Prince is talking about.

Our gift comes from a higher power. Princes’ power of creativity continued to flow because of his love of God because he saw the love in others. From it being overt like Controversy to subtle representation like Purple Rain, I would dare say that all of his music was Bible focused because his intention was to bring people to a higher frequency, by first giving them what they want.
His inspiration was not from others but from God, to be inspired by God and ourselves.

WOW! Reason #2 was very good! Prince new from the beginning his gift of music came from God! I came to a realization that God created mankind to worship him and serve others. If we are not worshipping God we will begin to worship something God created or begin to believe we are God ourselves. Prince enlightened my personal relationship with Jesus Christ and my love and respect to women!!! O(+>

"Controversy" is the first Prince song I heard, and I've loved Prince ever since.

Good point for the second video. It certainly never bothered me and I'm not religious in the slightest. Yet I consider the rainbow children one of the greatest albums ever so you don't need to be religious to appreciate his craft. Prince was also a genius with his lyrics at letting you find your own meanings and messages in the music. Also as far back as graffiti bridge Prince was making a statement about not getting played when morris day comes into the glam slam and says "people been telling me u making that spiritual noise again, u know I can't make no money that way"

Coming from a black Baptist upbringing in rural Virginia, I was raised up to believe in God, Jesus, and the Bible. However, that didn’t stop me from listening to pop music, and Prince became my favorite artist after the soundtrack to the 1989 Batman film came out. But as I got older and began to come across more information that showed me that religion is a con- game and a way to control the population at large, I quickly renounced religion and became vehemently anti-religious. But I still love Prince’s music. I truly think had he lived longer, he would have renounced religion too. Because his last few albums before he died, showed me he was conscious about a lot of deep political and social issues. That “third eye” theme showed he was hip to things going on most religious mindsets know absolutely nothing about at all. In my opinion, religion makes people extremely ignorant and stupid, especially when they’re so close minded to anything that challenges their beliefs. And being a black man myself and learning my history about the African continent before it was colonized by outside invaders like the Arabs, Europeans, and now Asians, I know that African people were and extremely spiritual people but never religious. Religion came as a result of outside invaders taking traditional African spirituality and twisting it to serve their political and social motives to enslave the very people they stole that spirituality from. See, if you’re spiritual, you understand that whatever you do to other living beings, has a direct consequence on you, so therefore, you don’t mistreat others unjustly. But when you’re religious, you will do anything often the most heinous things, because your god or holy book tells you to, and you feel no shame whatsoever. Look at how the Arabs used Islam to justify the enslavement of African people during the slave trade in the Indian Ocean. Or better yet, look how the Europeans used their twisted version of Christianity to justify their enslavement of black peoples. And by making all images of God and Jesus as a white man, that has a tremendous adverse affect on the mentality of POC. I wish more people would take the time to realize these things. But religion is a powerful stupidity and inhibits logical and critical thinking skills, which is why is pointless trying to reason with religious people, Christians especially. I know because I have a lot of dumb ass Christians in my own family!! LOL

The song that really turned my thoughts of Christ into a better place and it also helped me to get closer to God was The Cross. I wanted to sing it on our church choir but my mom and I got into because she said it was a beautiful song but because it was "Prince" it wasn't appropriate for church. I felt that was very hipacritecul. I is still my favorite Prince song. I love all his music I don't care what it says or sounds like. If he sang it or wrote it I love it. LIVING TO SEE THE DAWN.

I think he was a Godsend. He was a smart and very very talented artist. I loved it when he started putting God in music. He was awesome. He was truly trying to save peoples souls. I know when I die I will go to Heaven. I have been saved and baptised. I love the Lord. I know I will be seeing Prince in Heaven. I think he was a different kind of Jehovah's Witness. The ones I have talked to all thought this was hell we are living in. I don't think Prince felt that way. I don't know for sure but just by his music. He kept Heaven and Hell and earth all separate. There isn't a song (well the post-1984) that I don't love. The versions he sang as a teenager and when he was first coming up in music, they are a bit raw and dirty. I like a few but not many. He cursed in them a bit and some were just dirty dirty. Now, that's not saying anything against Prince. He grew in his music just like he grew into manhood. He was chosen by God. God knew that by appealing first to the unsaved people, that when the time came, Prince would start to change to more religious views and in his music would reach so many more individuals than anybody else in the world. Including the Christian ministries that go to 3rd world countries. If you had a radio, you could hear Prince and through him find God. God has our lives planned before we are even born. There are no coincidences. God has a plan for every individual on earth. Prince fulfilled God's plan for him. I will go to Heaven when I die and when I get there, I will see Prince singing with the angels of heaven. To be honest, I can't wait for Jesus to come back. The world we are living in right now has almost been taken over by Satan. That's another matter for a different venue. Prince 4ever! God 4ever!

My theories on Religion and how it has impacted my life: Now I know, if you look deep within the bible there are scriptures that condone slavery. Many slave masters used the bible as their manual to control slaves into Christianity. Our spirituality was not Christianity. The first slave ship was named The Good Ship Jesus because they wanted us under their control by forcing their God unto us. Religion is a man-made construct that causes people to not have a mind of their own and just believe in what they are told. These teachings of God were forced on me as a child by a very religious family member. I feared God and always felt disconnected from the spirit as I got older. I'm not religious anymore but I know God is all around. Its a decision that I'm still working through, but I'm getting closer to the truth. I can be able to reach God without a middle man. I dont have to give up physical tithes when giving of myself is enough. Mother, spirit of God is within me not without. God doesnt have a religion and neither do I. God doesnt pick and choose who to love, or how we should love God in return. Spirituality is God made. My thoughts and theories on Prince's Spirituality: Prince was very spiritual throughout his life and career and never shyed away from it, putting it the same pedestal as sexuality, making them one. I always admired that about him, his insight was intriguing. He was definitely woke to a certain extent spilling truth bombs along the way about alot of things. Prince not wanting to comform to anything traditional, I found it odd that he went into organized religion. His spirituality was at a all time high when he married Mayte. Their relationship was very passionate and spiritual throughout but once tragedy struck, things shifted. Larry Graham was involved heavily with Prince during their marriage and I felt he manipulated him into going down the Jehovah's Witness path because Prince was lost and looking for some ground again. He wasn't talking about spirituality in the same way anymore and I think that it turned people off from him. He was so deep into this path that some people thought he was being too preachy. His music changed quite a bit, and I think he lost some of his edge but it was still just as funky, he could still draw you in. Some of his songs touch my soul. I've researched JW and I think it seems very restrictive, I can see why MJ left the faith. I wonder if he didn't go down this path, how would his life be if he was still here today. I know this is alot, but just my thoughts fam.

It's okay. You just had something to say. Well good news you're right. We are not christians; we are God's chosen people. He even calls us His personal treasure. We are Israelites; a person not born in Israel by whose roots and heritage are from there. We are NOT Africans. The slave-trade just went through there and most of the lost tribes of Israel are still there. Our God is going to gather us out of all these nations the same way he scattered us into every nation and put us back into our own land, Israel. Read Deuteronomy chapter 28 verses 48 and 68 then read the whole chapter that talks about the blessing and the curses of our people. Then read Deuteronomy chapter 30 that talks about the second exodus out of these nations and Jeremiah chapter 30. You need to read all the major and minor prophets after reading those chapters read Isaiah, Jeremiah, Joel, Hosea, Zechariah, Zephaniah ***Obadiah but first read the story about Jacob and Esau in Genesi chapter 25. That will keep you busy for a while. If you have questions that respond to this post. I'm always logged and I will see it. In these end-times a lot of our people are waking up to these truths. That Bible is your history book. I'm going to suggest some youtubers that you listen to: watchman reports, seed of israel, kingdom preppers, big juday. Please, I beg you. Find out who you really are. Growing up in a black southern Baptist home, Prince was for years seen as the devil. It was a tough road to get anything played in my house after the rumored lyrics from spinning Darling Nikki backwards... or really after playing the song at all. The spiritual side of Prince and eventual openness about it did help to bridge the relationship and allow his music back into the home. I can remember recording an MTV interview off the television onto one of our blank tapes just to show my mother the part of the interview where he discussed Let’s Go Crazy. “See he’s talking about God” I would plead. “Well he should put some clothes on and actually say God” she would answer back. It was a struggle. Eventually mom would convert (pun intended) to become purple family. But just an example of how even those religious were scared of his spirituality.

Prince's Friend - That is what I loved about him the most; his love for God. He was raised 7th Day Adventist and later became Jehovah's Witness like Michael Jackson. What most people don't know is that the two religions really are the same religion; they just didn't agree on the day of worship which according to the Bible is Saturday, the 7th day of the week. The album that you said didn't sell as well, Love Sexy, was my favorite album. I would play it from sun up til sun down and never got tired of it. I've always been a strong believer in the Most High as you can tell from my internet name - Messianic Hebrew. It was like all his other music didn't exist to me. The Love Sexy Album was my world and I still have it. I loved thieves in the temple also (Love is God).

Prince was too religious? Songs about God, the devil, or spirituality in general doesn’t necessarily make Prince or anyone “religious”.
From the beginning Prince inner and outer images and music presentations were loaded with contrast and comparisons.
For example, Lady Cab Driver, from the album 1999, “Get this demon out of me...” or the song Temptation from Around the World in a Day, here Prince talks about his immoral vice, sexual temptation.” This may not be viewed on the surface as a “religious song” but in contrast and comparison it’s extremely “religious” in context.
Prince talks of his “fleshly” desire for sex minus love but then his conversation with God is displayed on the track, “Oh, silly man, that's not how it works
You have to want her for the right reasons
    I do!
    "You don't, now die!"
    No! No!
Let me go, let me go
    I'm sorry
    I'll be good
    This time I promise
Love is more important than sex...”
I dug the jam the day the album was released!
Anyway, Prince’s albums were loaded with “religious” symbols from the “1-all seeing eye, the guitar in the fire (1999 album cover) to portals, and heart shaped mirrors.
There are two sides to religion and spirituality both the light and dark side, Prince as a master genius wonderfully provided us both from the beginning of his public career. Thus in the beginning, the Rock god Prince created music light and darkness, love and lust, war and peace, chaos and disorder, being possessed and being set free.
I could go on for hours.
The truth is most listers of Prince music are surface dwelling consumers of the products he masterfully created.
May you live to see the dawn

Of course you could get to a point where it becomes a conversion or a “you suck because you don’t believe my right”, but with Jehovah’s Whitness, it’s usually sharing the religion, that’s part of what it tells you to do. It’s not like you could expect anything different. If he started to tell anyone they were wrong for not being jehovah, that’s when I’d start to have a problem.

I would say yes, his openness with his spirituality was a factor in a lot of people turning off from Prince, but on the flip-side it probably opened him up 2 new fans. I'm not a believer but can listen 2 religious music. Ann Nesby is 1 of my top 10 female singers of all time & her albums R filled with religious preachings. If music, melody, & tone is right I will listen 2 anything. Interestingly The Rainbow Children (which is in my top 5 of Prince albums) while being very in your face religiously, can also B taken in other ways such as The NPG R the rainbow children & they R trying 2 free themselves from the music industry; or that the rainbow children R all colours of man that need 2 come 2gether in order 2 free themselves from the oppression of the colonizers. I also get the vibe from the album that it is forcing us as black people 2 look within ourselves & better ourselves on a personal level in order 4 us 2 come 2gether & better our situation. A Gr8, thought provoking album that highlights what Prince was best @ as a songwriter; his ability 2 write a song with 1 narrative that can also have 2 or 3 other meanings. Reminds me of the episode of A Different World where Dwayne Wayne wrote a poem about math & Whitley took it as a love poem 2 her. U could C Y; it worked on both levels.

Specially some of his latest music really did helped me and as well as some of the stuff he’s said. Then with his book, there’s a part of the book where the author is talking about his conversations with prince and man the dude knew A LOT! I mean stuff I’ve never heard pastors talk about or get into detail about certain things like why is it that people changed their names in the Bible and well dude explained it and got me wondering more and searching for more and well I did. Its also very inspiring how prince wasn’t afraid to speak on what he believed in and he wasn’t afraid to speak about God. I can respect other peoples beliefs but even though we people don’t share the same beliefs,I am sure we can agree that the man was a genius and an amazing artist&musician

We know the death of his child sent Prince on further search his quest for God and Jesus was always in him, he studied different philosophies of God... he's outlook was actually pretty conservative yet many refused to believe it because of his on stage performance

Once again people need to stop critiquing on Prince so what if he was a religious person he also had a sexual side to him as well does it matter? We are all a child of God I love that prince talks about God in his music he was trying to send a message we need to get educated and learn the word of God instead bashing a man who is spiritual I like who he is as a person and a musician nothing or no one will ever compare 2 him #RIPPrince #live4love #letlovelive4u #love4oneanother #StopTheHate

Prince, was very spiritual and had an hard life by listening to his music, watching his videos, movies, his interviews, got Prince, S message it was about freedom and freeing your mind from the brainwash of society yes Prince mixed freaky with spiritual, going out on the limb again,, there is sexuality in the Bible, Prince took that and put it to music and started an movement that is still strong after his murder I was one of the few who understood his message a matter of fact the cut just Around The Corner,, from his 1990 movie was my favorite from the movie I believe the movie did not get any play was that it was spiritual with angels, the car killing somebody, people getting jacked, it was his masterpiece love that movie and the soundtrack there was the scene with Prince and an gun about his late father then here it is spiritual, a lot of people did not understand it this was to me the beginning of what Prince was going to do in the future then in interviews Prince was always saying something wrong with the clouds, the system a lot of people did not understand this, but Prince Friends

Dude, I've never commented but I do follow. I saw The Revolution in Atlanta on Feb 24, 2018. They rock. Mark is a beast on base guitar. Keep doing what you are doing and I will continue to watch. FYI, I first heard Prince (Soft N Wet) in '78 and found Prince in 1982 (1999). I am deep... 2,000 songs deep.

Admiring his musical genius since the 80s I certainly see the change from having spirituality in the music (next to or interwened with other themes) to making the music about spirituality. I know sounds almost identical but the purpose of the music somehow changes. I respect and understand the journey. Personnaly though I always preferred the first approach, discovering and reflecting instead of being "told" about the subject. So I can see why some people may felt turned off.

He didn't turn people off. He made people stand up and challenge themselves. Prince was a strong person. I wish he didn't join JW though because they are too strict. Prince could never suck and I think the people who said he sucks, they really sucked. I am not religious but I love that God song and all his religious songs. It is the musicianship in those songs. Did u ever think that because of his love for God, his music got better and better. He is brilliant

Again, watch the video. I actually love a lot of his religious music too, but it’s true that it turned some people off. You seem to be taking personal offense to having critical discussions. Prince didn’t want any of us Friends to blindly follow him. Asking questions and analyzing thing like this is important to understanding music.
      But to each their own.

What always interested me about Prince's earlier works was how he would mix sexuality and spirituality together like they were one and the same. He didn't seem to feel any contradictions in expressing his love for both God and sex. Thats what differentiated him from a standard gospel or religious pop singer.
Unfortunately, i feel that the Rainbow Children era was when he went too far into just one half. His music was too specific to one (more niche) religion and was unrelateable. I also feel like the music itself suffered because of it.
His 'LoveSexy' album was a religious masterpiece in my opinion, while Rainbow Children came across as condescendingly boring to me. So i didn't have a problem with him being religious in his earlier music career because he balanced it with other material. Once it became his sole focus, i felt his music suffered greatly.
