EPG Review: Mega Man Classic Series (Eight "Mini" Reviews in One)

- Mini reviews are back, and under a new format. With Mega Man & Bass being the 9th console release in the classic Mega Man series, it became increasingly apparent to me during the scripting process how important it was to discuss the games that came before. That's why I've produced this companion video as a lead in to the MM&B review proper, complete with eight "mini" reviews in a lean, 20 some minute package. Mini reviews as a segment have been dead since early 2014, so I thought it might be worth reinventing them into something I would actually make relatively often. Anyways, enjoy the video, and I'll see you next time for Mega Man and Bass on SNES and GBA!

The best part of 8 is the Dr. Light's Lab track, and then when you leave Roll says, "Good luck, Mega Man!" in the sweetest voice.
Exo Paradigm Gamer: The only channel on RUclips where a significantly shorter review is still 20 minutes long.
ThePieMaster im ok with that, im tired of 5 minute reviews that doesnt tell anything
To be fair, his normal reviews are around 40 to 50 minuets long.
ThePieMaster NicoB* 30 minutes*
Just to be clear, this is a "mini review" because there are several 1/2 to 2 minute reviews all in one video. So in this case it's the reviews within the video that are "mini" rather than the video itself. That said, many of my other videos are comically long by comparison.
In the past I've also done shorter reviews of new releases under the mini reviews banner, which I may actually do again, but I dunno. The segment's been dead for so long I thought it would get more life out of a format like this. It reminded me of working on the Donkey Kong Land trilogy video, which is one of my favorite reviews I've made.
I've changed the title to "EPG Review: Mega Man Classic Series (Eight "Mini" Reviews in One)" so that it better represents the content of the video.
I wanne let you know that I really appreciate your work Exo. Like many other I live a great deal of nostalgia while watching your videos, while they are also pretty interesting to my mind aswell. I especially like rewatching them. keep up the good work and I'm really hyped for the new remake or rebreak not only because its my favorite series of yours but also will be the longest one ??! (1.5/2 hours +??)
Edit : By saying I think your videos are interesting to me, I mean that imo you can communicate your opinion in such way that its easy to work with it and reflect in my mind. In short I like how you criticize and talk about things.
Okay, question: where are episodes 1 for DKC1 and DKC2 playthroughs on your channel? Both start at episode 2.
Good question! The first episodes were uploaded on this review channel to try to advertise the let's play channel. You can find them both in the respective playlists on the Let's Play Channel. Though it's probably time I reuploaded them to the other channel.
ExoParadigmGamer speaking of Donkey Kong is the gameboy color version of DKC going to be in the mediocre marathon
cant believe you skipped out on the dos games, come on exo
My God, you're right! Those games are the core of the classic canon. I've made a horrible mistake!
ahbeef Pixelmusement covered BOTH on his Ancient DOS games series. Would you like links to those videos?
*opportunity*
You gonna do the bleh flash game "Save Doctor Light" too?
It has Zelda 2 Link in it.
@@ExoParadigmGamer
That's actually a good chance to do an EPG review on them too.
@@ExoParadigmGamerAlso mega man 2 on the gameboy it has one of the best video game soundtracks of all time
4:43 That was a really interesting conversation we had on Paul blart 2.
Ill say that all 8 games are absolutely amazing when not comparing them to each other. They all have their own charm and i love them.

"Rock"-Paper-Scissors. You know, like how his Copy Ability works.
3:13
What are your thoughts on the Zero series? Or Battle Network?
3:04 Trilogy , would the misadventures of tron bonne really count as a part of the trilogy?
Nathaniel Foga well it’s a prequel to the first game, so maybe.
Yeah, I would count it.
"CAPCOM!!"
We're still waiting for "Megaman Legends 3"!! :(
Yeah, I'd say so
I consider it a trilogy currently. Same as I consider MM&B to be a main game in the classic series
Glad to see someone else who really enjoys Mega Man 4, I feel like it's the most underrated out the classic games as it seems to get overshadowed by 2 and 3.
Mac Blackledge it's much better than 2 or 3
Brett Ellis FINALLY someone gets it.
Michał G Pretty much everyone who actually analyzes games thinks so
Brett Ellis I was not aware of that. I only saw this , Somecallmejohnny's reviews and some mixed opinions in comments.
The game has always seemed much more solid than 2 and 3 to me (no major nonsense such as Boobeam Trap or some of the Doc Robots fights), which most consider vastly superior. And unlike 5 and 6, it has actual challenge.
Michał G because most fans rely on nostaglia
Sonic Adventure's voice acting really would blush because it wasn't bad aside from a few of Tails' dialogue and "Oh no!"
I miss Ryan Drummond. That's what Sonic sounds like to me
NintendoGamerChris Don't forget
"GET A LOAD OF THIS!"
"GET A LOAD OF THIS!"
"GET A LOAD OF THIS!"
"GET A LOAD OF THIS!"
*G E T A L O A D O F T H I S !*
I think Sonic Adventure has underpowered English voice acting, so why is it so enjoyable?
BECAUSE IT IS QUOTABLY HILARIOUS!!!!!!
“Oh no!”
“You are completely surrounded!”
“Watch out! You’re gonna crash! Aah!”
“Get a load of this!”
“Froggy!”
“Aw yeah! This is happening!”
“Muahahahaha! You know nothing fool! It’s Chaos! The God of Destruction! Ha ha ha!”
@@kieranstark7213 "Aw Tails, what am I gonna do with you?"
I mean, in Exo's defense and the defense of others who criticize the English Dub of the Sonic Adventure series (which I define as Adventure-06, personally, since the titular duology is a duology in name only, seeing as Adventure 2-Shadow the Hedgehog are a collective self-contained story rather than consequential follow-ups to the first Adventure game outside of references), because English voice acting in video games didn't have a standard in Gens 5 and 6 outside of RPGs or Metal Gear Solid, be it dialogue or line delivery. Plus, Ryan Drummond, Jason Griffith, and now Deven Mack are really just emulating Jaleel White's performance in the DiC shows, whereas Roger Craig Smith provides his own performance to stand out from the cast.
Mega Man 3 is still my favorite, despite 6 being the most well designed, in my opinion. It's worth noting that 3 was rushed, so if it had more time in the oven, it had the potential to be the best one.
Mish Koz 3 was a lot more innovative than 2. Sliding so Mega Man can dodge attacks and move faster, Rush the robot dog rather than the "Items" of MM2 and the Magnet beam from MM1, Weapon icons, and a bit more. Don't forget the cheats you can fuck around with!
You have a point about 3 being too rushed. If it had way more time there would of had a decent Wily Castle and the Doc Robots would of probaly been more polished. I prefer 2 by far, because that game is good throughout. 3 gets pretty lame once you beat the robot masters. Shame that it was rushed.
Mish Koz, I agree. Well, not sure about 6 being the most well designed, though that also sounds about right. Mega Man 3 was my first Mega Man game and the first I (nearly - Mom had to help with the sales tax because math fail) bought for myself, and also the first game I ever managed to beat.
Oh, out of time. Short version is that Mega Man 3 *definitely* has its flaws, but most come with a silver lining. Being incomplete means bits and pieces are obviously rought *but* also means the infamous Controller II cheats were left in, and those make this one of the *best* Mega Man games to learn the series even if you've got to cut your teeth on the Charge Shot somewhere else. The Wily Stages are short and easy and... they *need* to be because the Doc Robot Stages are so long and difficult... which seems like that might be the point of those Stages.
Would I love to play a more polished version of Mega Man 3? Like one where all 8 Stages were revisited *but* that meant that each only had one Doc Robot baddie to face? Maybe with some sort of reward so that it didn't feel like pure padding but instead added more depth to the game (and setting)? Of course! XD
I dont think 6 is the most well designed
But 3 is certainly the best one on nes by far
I'd like your take on the Battle network series. I wonder if it would be your cup of tea or not
Heck, with an English patch now available for the DS remake, Battle Network 1 (or BN5) could be offered a ROR or XrossPlatform episode.
He’s never been much of an rpg fan
@@kylecampbell565then why does he think that the SNES is better than the NES?
I never played Megaman 8 but my Impressions from looking at the footage is that it has the best presentation besides the cutscenes. Those animations are so freaking smooth!
3:00 "And finished the Legends *trilogy*"
Legends 3 was finished and this man has played it
It's nice to see some love for 4 and 7, though I am also partial to 6 myself.
Cosmic Crown I like 4 alot as well (even though the story is not good), though personally I don't like seven that mutch, if you like it cool, you can give it enough time and patience to like it as a good game, I can appreciate that.
@@farisweiss2373
How is 4’s story any worse than the other nes games lol
I'm literally less than a second into the video and I have to give it a thumbs up for starting with the MM5 opening theme. Such an absolute banger.
Another great video! Can't remember which Remake or Rebreak I started with but it took me a good couple of weeks to binge your content and catch up! Hope to see more soon.
To me personally I only find 2 megaman x games bad, x6 with how to complex it is (I will give it credit for good graphics, music, and occasionally good level design), and x7 which in my opinion is the worst megaman x game ( and is the most boring).
I'd agree that X6 and X7 are the only "bad" ones. But even X5 and X8 aren't exactly "good" if you ask me.
ExoParadigmGamer I think 5 is a decent game that while worse than most of the others is not complete garbage, and while I have not beaten 8 I am mostly done with it and I can say that 8 is o.k and made axl a fun character to play as (in my opinion), and was smart enough to have the platforming parts mostly 2d with a bit of 2.5d mixed in there for visual effects.
I more or less agree. My point was more that I find the classic series more consistently enjoyable, even if they are more samey. And like I said in the video, I also have more fundamental criticisms of the X formula that factor into my overall impressions on Classic Vs. X.
That said, one of my top Mega Man games is Maverick Hunter X on PSP, so I do enjoy X when he's good.
ExoParadigmGamer Yeah, it’s okay to be wrong every now and again seeing as X>Classic
Yours and RZ's X reviews are actually what convinced me that X has a lower overall quality standard than classic.
love your channel man! my son and I really enjoy watching, keep up the good work!

The Side Quest Gamer Review Show, cool. By the way which is your favorite megaman x game ( if you have played any)? Because I like Maverick Hunter X the most.
I’ve started playing legacy collection recently on my 3ds, I’m currently on five and it’s the first time I’m playing most of these in full, and so far I have to say 4 is also my favorite, with the weapon balance, the good visuals that thankfully don’t have as much slowdown as 3, and the fact you can actually replay already beaten stages at will (personal preference of mine).
I dont know why, but the "All 8 Levels From Start" password for 7 doesn't work at all in the Legacy Collection 2 rerelease of it.
My only guess is because it’s sort of buggy. The passwords that you get from beating bosses that isn’t like the normal order doesn’t work. At least according the Mega Man password generator website, but I have no idea. It’s just a guess
It's been a while since we've seen a short review. And you managed to pull it off well. Good work.
There's a disturbing lack of Mega Man Zero when you listed off the Mega Man games you're familiar with. If you haven't played it yet then I hope one day you can enjoy that amazing little sub series!
It’s very difficult
20:12 "Power-ups like the Super Armor are essentially mandatory to finish this game"

5:10 Gutsman is easily defeated with the Mega Buster, too. I actually go GutsMan first these days.

MM 2 - 9.5/10
MM 3 - 7/10
MM 4 - 8.5/10
MM 5 - 7.5/10
MM 6 - 7.5/10
MM 7 - 8/10
MM 8 - 7/10
MM 9 - 10/10
MM 10 - 8.5/10
Hey, just want to say that I would love to see that run of Mega Man Remake/Rebreaks! I'd be really interested in your thoughts!
I can’t wait for megaman and bass review. I got the GBA version on virtual console at the end of this August, and I ended up loving it. Maybe the VC spoiled me, but oh well (I didn’t use save states though. I only meant the screen size.) I did hate it during the first play through, but I appreciated it much more the second time. That’s why I always play games twice now before forming an opinion. Anyway, looking forward to it!
4:17: Not to mention a cross platform comparison between the PS1 and saturn versions of Mega Man 8.
Saying any of the bosses are “impossible “ to beat without their weakness is literally just false
Nice. Your first new review since I've subscribed. Thumbs way up
Hopefully you haven't been waiting too long. I'm going to try to get the next one out within the next few weeks if I can!
The rewind feature in the re-release was very useful. I'd say when it comes to the best Classic Mega Man games, 6 and 7 are the best.
On a follow up from watching this MM segment in reverse, I'm stoked for the possibility of Wily Wars ROR. Easily curious to hear your thoughts,
compared to my pretty robust opinion I made playing it lag-free for my LP.
That and MM4 was SO DESERVING OF A 16-BIT UPSCALE TOO. Represent!
For Mega Man 8, the only upgrade I got was the boosted Charge Shot, nothing else. I didn’t even know the Super Armor was in the shop. And I had more fun without it.
While Mega Man 7 is my personal favorite game in the classic series. I haven't played Mega Man 8 yet. But I do want to get Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 partially to FINALLY play it and also because Capcom has FINALLY bundled Mega Man 9 & 10 with all the DLC.
7 is my favorite as well. 8 is a good game in my opinion. The main criticism it gets is the voice acting, but only during cutscenes. It isn’t too bad in actual gameplay. I personally haven’t played 9 and 10, which is why I’m happy for the legacy collection 2 also.
On what system? I got the PS4 version of 1 and 2
No 7 is da wurst gaym evar
I would love to see a parallel universe where Mega Man 4, 5, and 6 are released on SNES and not NES.
Maybe 5 and 6, but definitely not 4.
Great review. I'm a really big fan. That said, I was surprised you weren't bothered by the sprite size in 7. While it certainly doesn't break the game for me and doesn't significantly affect gameplay, it's always made the game feel very cramped and claustrophobic to me. As such, I've always preferred the size of the NES games and 8 to this one. And since you talk about screen crunch in a lot of your videos, I figured it would bug you in this one as well.
Yeah for some reason it doesn’t bother him in SNES games. He might be biased towards the console, as he’s not a fan of the NES.
Finally , it's awesome to see a new video from you .😁👍
11:13
Roll: MEGAMAN THOSE PLATFORMS FALL WHEN YOU!!!
Arin: HEY NO FAWKIN SHIT! THEYRE FALLING THEY'RE FUCKIN FALLING I CAN SEE THAT!!!
14:48 I mean the PC Engine CD was technically an 8 bit machine so Rondo of Blood is technically an 8-bit game. Also when are you doing remake or rebreak on Castlevania 1 Super IV and Chronicles?
I played Mega Man 2 and 3 soooo much as a kid. Mega Man 2 was the first game I ever beat. I never played 4-6 but I feel the need to check them out!
18:06-18:26
That's actually very understandable.
My favorites are 3 and 2, mostly because those are the ones I grew up with so I've played those two more than all the other Mega Man games combined.
While I did rent Mega Man 2 a few times at the video store when I was a kid, Mega Man 3 is the first title that I owned, so it's always been the one I go back to when replaying the series. It's my personal favourite, but as the video points out, there are definitely flaws in the game. While I did like fighting the Doc Robots, the stages themselves can be quite annoying, though with the several replays I have done of the game I've made my peace with it. Also, I loved the slide mechanic, and it pains me when I can't do that in the first two titles, though Mega Man 2 has grown a lot on me over the last few decades. Also, while possibly controversial, I would've loved to have seen a remake of 2&3 much as they did with Mega Man: Powered Up for MM1, albeit with hopefully better visuals.
What playthrough of sly were you referencing

Megaman X6 was a frustrating incarnation mess that made Kirby series especially Kirby Star Allies calling easy was a huge hyperbolic understatement.
Whats the song at 19:00?
11:42: Not to mention, by the time Mega Man 6 came out, Megaman X already released on the SNES.
A short EPG review? Must be a warm day on Pluto.

Hehehe, it's like Christmas morning...at night.
Uh anyway, great video as per usual. By the way, my favorite Classic game is 6.
Mini reviews...hey wait a minute! That logo better be referencing the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series. And will you do a mini review of one of the games or the series in the future?
Indeed it is. I was thinking of what logos reminded me of "mini" when I read them, and the subtitles of all those Mario Vs. DK games all had "mini" in them. Seemed like the best way to go.
Good to see I'm not alone in 4 being a classic series favourite. Dust man's theme is also my favourite master theme in the entire series, so I'm very happy to see it get some love, as well. Earned a subscriber, there.
Edit: Glad 6's soundtrack at least got... mentioned, since I think it's generally quite underrated.
You know... why didn’t Capcom get the Ocean Group to do the English dub? Sure Ian James Corlett wouldn’t have fit the smaller build of Mega Man compared to his cartoon counterpart, but the Ocean Group had some experience with the Mega Man franchise.
It saddens me that not many people played the Battle Network series
I've only played the first one!!
After I've beaten it and finished many of the side quest, I sadly never bothered with the sequels.. ....
How are the rest of the "Battle Network" games, by the way??
BN has one of the most unique RPG gameplay styles imo.
TheHumanSonikku they all seem to be the same thing tbh
Actually batttle Network 4 is the third best selling game in the franchise. Only beaten by Mega Man 2 and Mega Man X1
@@kylecampbell565that is true however that is more to due to Japan than the west.
What game is 17:59
I'm with ya, EPG. Mega man 4 is my favorite of the NES sextology!
one thing I really like about Megaman 8 is I think its art style shares some DNA with the Legends style of coloring and robot design.
17:05 glad you learned form your star road rant in Mario 64 RoR to focus on the game youre reviewing
Kyle Campbell Yeah that was annoying. But not as annoying as say TheMetalBlade5 making a video just to piss someone off. And considering the end of his most recent response I'm afraid he's gonna do it again.
or as bad as rain's sequelitis on ocarina of time which was really a rant against skyward sword (he also admitted on game grumps he quit because he could never figure out bomb bowling)
Kyle Campbell Go figure. I'm still shocked that Jontron was once apart of Game Grumps. I tried watching the first episode of their Sonic Boom: Rise Of Lyric LP and I found the commentary so annoying that I couldn't make it through the entire video.
I think the dumbest momenet was episode 19 Arin is struggling t figure out a PINK balance beam Danny has the brilliant suggestion to use Amy. Aria status he's overthinking things and just uses the knuckles glitch to get past the "puzzle"
17:58 What game is that?
Sly 3
I wonder whose LP he's talking about..
Okay.
But what about megaman 9 and 10?
I'm happy that you and I feel pretty much exactly the same about Megaman 2.
I'm glad he has a positive outlook on 8. 2 is overrated.
Seeing as how I am a hugeass fan of Mega Man, I clicked on this as soon as I got the notification.
I would love to watch a 24 hour review of everything megaman related. I'd be fine losing sleep for that.
WOW for once I come across a youtuber who doesn’t put Mega Man 2 (not saying it isn’t great but I believe each entry in the series got better)on the super high pedestal everybody else puts it on 👏🏾 and I also share your opinion on MM4 just not on the music side I believe the soundtrack and intro are awesome
Whoa, I'd never heard that thing about Castlevania III being tougher in the US because of the whole rental thing. Interesting!
Great video as always, Exo! I agree with 4 and 7 being the best and it's nice to hear you aren't terribly critical of 8. 8 is good but there are still some areas it could have improved in, such as the store in my opinion.
whats the song used in the intro up to the way when he starts talking? I need that
+Domonomnom Mega Man 5 opening theme, which is the best one in the series. Like I said, AMAZING title and fortress themes... bland level themes.
Ahhh!! I knew there was a reason as to why I remember a lot of mm5 music but not levels haha :D
Finally, someone else who thinks 2 and 3 are flawed. 4 is so much better in every way.
I'm gonna be honest. I really DON'T like Megaman 2 & I feel like someone will want to lynch me for saying that.
+Knuxfan24 I agree I don't like Mega Man 2 either.
MM2 is one of the most overrated games of all time. Not a very good MM game
Well, if anyone had any stated reason.....D
I sometimes feel like people like mega man 2 the best because it's the only one with an easy mode. Though I say that, but then I like 4 the best probably because it's the easiest one to me, or at least the one with the least bullshit unavoidable enemies. Actually scratch that, mega man 11 is my new favourite but if we're talking about the old games then yeah 4
@@duffman18that’s actually false because Rockman 2 is also considered the best Famicom Rockman game as well
Mega Man 7 is my favorite entry in the Classic series. Aesthetically pleasing, great music with a terrific direction using 16-bit sounds, blends several gameplay aspects of other current Mega Man games at the time (X series' exploration, the Gameboy series' shop feature, and the plethora of homages to the NES games that preceded it), while still standing on it's own, having some of the most elaborate outside of the box level designs and secrets, Mega Man 7 is easily deserving as being one of if not the most polished Mega Man games in the entire series.
But it's technical achievements and qualities are so overpowered that I can't handle it, and therefor it's bad.
I haven't played it yet, but it is stupid that you can only chose 4 robot masters at the beginning.
BTW Exo after you finished your ROR of Mega Man & Bass are you going to do another mini review on Mega Man's 9 & 10
Until I saw Caddicarus' review, I thought Mega Man 8 was on SNES.
Oh, this gives me a good idea for a Remake or Rebreak, once you're out of the mediocre marathon: Mega Man Battle Network 5 DS vs. GBA.

*Some time later*
Exo says that Mega Man & Bass is his favorite soundtrack.
Megaman is my favorite franchise. I've been playing the series since I was a kid. I've perfected almost every title down to an art
Ready for MM&B! That game whooped my ass as a kid on the GBA. My buddy let me try it, and I don't think I got past the first stage.
Yooooo, we in here lets Rock!

When It comes to Mega Man I'm more familiar with series beyond the X series like Zero, Zx, Battle Network and StarForce I do hope one day those games will get the attention they deserve after coming back to this video
Ah, finally, another who feels that a good game like MM2 is still well over-hyped. Personally, three is the sweet spot for me in the Classic Series. Introduced a lot that we're so familiar with in terms of gameplay.
It's a shame you stopped right before the goat game "Mega Man 9"
Yes, and Mega Man 10-11 as well! *shots fired*
@@kieranstark7213I don’t get it
You should also do a “diet r&r” for the two legacy titles. While they aren’t remakes per se, but the occasional port of the games has some oddities here and there
11:35 yet I don’t see that complaint with Mega Man & Bass. Me thinks there might be a bias there.
Exo is probably the only person to create a short video, and the video is still 20 minutes long. Funnily enough, I don't mind. Too many short videos skim over a bunch of stuff and don't give an accurate representation of the game.
It also makes sense as to why the video is 20 minutes, as he's covering 8 games (so about 3 minutes for each game).
Never clicked on a video faster in my life.
legokerik_ Me neither.
4 things
1. Top Spin is actually really awesome once you know how to use it. It's actually one of my favorite special weapons.
2. You should play the Mega Man Zero games. They are amazing.
3. ZX is really good if you use a map online as the in game map system was terrible.
4. MM V had some cool set pieces like the water ski stage, and the most responsive controls with the slide an charge abilities in the classic series. For vanilla mega man seeing the games with the best controls are 3, 9, and 10.
I beg to differ. Megaman 5 s got one of the best OST in the megaman series
If I may make a request for a Remake or Rebreak episode, how about the N64 version of Quake II? It's a completely different game to the PC version, and it actually uses a modified version of the first game's engine.
Hey Exo. Just wanted to say "good job" on the video. I kinda wish you gave each Classic Mega Man game their own video, but I understand why you didn't. Out of the first 8 games, I find 3 and 7 to be the best, or at the least, my favorites. I know you hate 3's second half, but I personally find the Doc Robot stages, other than Needle Man's second half, to be overblown in regards to how bad they are. I'm not saying they're great, 'cause they aren't, but I find them to be an interesting design choice. I'd be here all day giving my opinions on the first 8 games, but I like all of them at the very least. Then again, Mega Man, Classic Mega Man anyway, is my favorite video game series, so I might be biased when I say that.
How come there's so little views, at least in comparison to the other reviews?
Probably because while it is great that Exo would review Mega Man 1-8, he is yet to review every Mega Man game that came after Mega Man & Bass (GBA/SFC).
Will you by any time soon cover the X games?
It's all good, man. Take as long as you need.
Of course you'd censor the middle finger on my Rockman shartwork. Gotta think about the kids XD
Didn't want to get demonetized over it.
ExoParadigmGamer But wait, isn’t Alec the one looking out for the families watching his channel every Friday night?
Yeah. But when I'm not making new episodes of the SQG Review Show, I'm vulgar as fuck.
Wait - you skipped Megaman Zero of all things? Those four gems are more or less the best Megaman has to offer.

You mean the games (i am talking about the classics) that require you to memorize all the pathways of the level, combine them perfectly and try to run as much fast as you can avoiding ALL the enemies or traps using the exactly said perfect pathway combination to get the best time? Because Sonic's original idea was always multi-pathway enjoyable speedrunning with momentum-based gameplay.
