@How_to_Pronounce I don't necessarily disagree, but the keyword you used is "most". I'd argue if a small number of people change their mind, debate can be worth it. I think you’re really true about the “history teachers have to relate it to present and be passionate to get engaged”. All my history teachers in high school were quite good and loved the subject, arguably my sophomore teacher was the most passionate about history, but my junior teacher was the one I felt got me most interested in understanding government and made me have a significant interest, because he was both interested but also connected it well to present stuff and was interested in connecting it. It was a gov class so that helped, but he was also just very interested in it but in a way that most people can connect to (where as some of my other teachers while interested were interested in sort of a “this is the thing I’m passionate about” which, while great and definitely better than not caring, doesn’t really relate that strongly to students who don’t naturally have a passion for it too).
None of the history classes offered in high school covered interesting subjects; it’s all US history or Civil War history, which is ok, but for me things like History of religions, history of religious persecution in western society, or sociological approaches to heresy and heretical doctrines in medieval Christendom, for example, would’ve grabbed my attention, thus I didn’t recognize my passion for history until adulthood.

So I started to watch more conservative/Republic point of view to find the bs on both sides but also more to think on a topic that I already had opinions on. You can't say you're open minded if you're not willing to hear things from all ends.
@@JJMcCulloughI'm a bit late and I can't speak for this fella, but I went down a similar path as him. I grew up in the northern section of the Bible Belt. Short answer to your question: Yes, I see Trump's bullshit. Long answer: I saw his bullshit even before he became a meme among the dozen other candidates running in 2015. To be fair I've never voted for him (never voted for the winning presidential candidate in my life 😭). In the 2020 election there were less than 100 people in my small town that voted not-Trump. Whole town's FULL of his flags and hats. Other than the president, I overwhelmingly vote more "Republican" than anything else.
People's views are often formed through social osmosis and reinforced from lived experience. As an example, no one is born racist. They become racist through culture, social relationships such as family and community, and laws. Then is reinforced through negative experiences with said racial group or through others experiences they may hear about. These deeply rooted views are almost never going to change because they listened to a single debate or had a conversation with someone with an opposing view. The best you can hope for is to plant a seed of doubt. To get them to question themselves. If you can get them to start viewing things from a different perspective you can start meaningful change. However, there's not really any way to know when you've succeeded in doing this so it can feel like you're not doing anything meaningful. Ultimately these debates are just going to be a single point in a series of points that is going to get someone to broaden their perspectives. All of this though completely ignores other factors like mental illness, a lack of education, poor social groups, etc. I hope people like Steven don't quit what they do because they feel like they're being ineffectual. It's definitely good to have people who can challenge others views like he does.
Hey August, I think the thumbnail title as well as the intro highlights are too click-baity for this podcast, and actually give off the wrong impression. I think for debates and aggressive conversations, I really enjoy how you frame both of these things. However, for Bridges, it feels like this podcast is a genuine attempt at productive conversations, and it's aiming at a completely different kind of audience. The thumbnail and highlights feel in direct contrast to this idea. In my opinion, I would rather both the thumbnails and highlights focus on the key insights. Just to put a dot on this, I think they should be, "constructive versus destructive"
@@roymarshall_yes but the idea that its a canadian-wide phenomenon and not like, 12 people in prince edward island that actually say it is probably why its so silly to canadians. Like if canadians thought all Americans sounded cajun or something

@@gaelsarmiento4496 Completely anecdotal and not true. Not saying the conservative base in Canada is identical to JJ but there are clear differences when compared to the republican base in America.
I personally think I agree more with Peterson than Destiny on average, but I thought Destiny absolutely won that debate. So yeah, one of the things I believe you learn as you grow older is that no one's really that special or unique. Therefore I hope there are many more people like me who aren't afraid to objectively look at the information or at a debate and judge it fairly and not give in to feelings or bias. And I think that certainly is the case, because I was far from the only person who stopped listening to people like Crowder and Owens as they devolved into madness. That being said, I believe the left has radicalized like crazy over the past 10 years and everything that's remotely woke will only end up being a destructive force. So there's many times I disagree with Destiny, especially when his bias is showing. But there's also loads of times I completely agree with him. I just wish everyone would at least be willing to take in information and draw their own conclusions instead of just repeating what other people they trust are telling them.
JJ’s in-depth content on Canadian history and culture (and US subjects as well) is excellent. He provided me with a better and more nuanced understanding of these subjects.
JJ used to do politically charged election coverage and I loved that. His new focus is so much better though just very curious and informative and pleasant
The real technological advancement of the Trump era was the discovery that the structure of the American government really had no defense for someone who would simply lie, keep lying, and never acknowledge or take responsibility for anything, and leveraging the internet and misinformation (and the help of autocrats who have been developing their general techniques for decades and supplied massive infrastructure for applying them) was an incredibly effective way to bring this technique down to a personal level with Americans.
I like the thought that conspiracy theories fill holes in peoples education (meaning that more education, people gravitate less to stupid explanations)
I fundamentally disagree on the "just teach the names and figures rather than more high concept stuff." I had years of my education wasted by going over names, techologies and battles of the civil war. I would be MUCH better off if we took a higher concept class about the policies and cultural impacts of the civil war. I don't gain value from knowing the names of generals for WWII. I gain value from knowing how my state's infrastructute policy changed during that time.
my least favorite types of history nerds are the ones really into a single war (most often WW2), but what they mean by that is that they know the names of every gun, tank, and plane, as well as every major battle and its outcome, and nothing of substance.
the whole "music is 'left brained' and art is not / I am grateful for the wonderful nature of things unlike you" made me roll my eyes so hard that i can't see anymore. help. my guide dog is writing this for me.
I use to think Destiny was a fucking villain,an avatar for 'annoying debate bro'.Now im just like "oh this guy says things I disagree with sometimes, but me and him overall are aligned in immediate political goals. He's fine,I guess"
Like the previous episodes, it will be released in a day or two. Still dumb that the link for "full episode" is already present here with no explanation though.
Debates absolutely have value to discourse. Do participants and consumers of the debate change their minds immediately? Almost never. But a debate is a chance for both sides to plant seeds of ideas or seeds of doubts in the perspective of someone with another opinion. Over the long haul this is how all our opinions change over time. Watching a debate just opens the window for that process.
I feel like knowing us history is hella important to poltics today. Not knowing at least basic history makes it a lot harder to have an informed political opinion.
Plenty of historically more isolated communities in Canada pre-urbanization in such a huge country, shouldn’t be surprised that we don’t all sound like middle class Andys who sound like the American version of RP English.
The Canadians in the comments who say the way he says “about” is a bit or seems exaggerated or unreal is just like a New Yorker born and raised, but in an alternate reality where the old stereotypical accent is much rarer but used to be the norm, and it has been forgotten in history and turned into an urban myth. All the new age New Yorkers think it’s just a thing made up by other people to make fun of them, but in reality, everybody else remembers it except for New Yorkers.

I think the bullshit he's dealt with has made him smart and nice. Well, smarter and nicer.
Original video is privated? It's fine just clicked the link to watch the whole thing lol.

I love JJ’s content! Very happy to see this collab!
The fuss aboot taking our Citizens, it’s aboot censoring our art, this is aboot dignity, this is aboot respect
The way he says "aboot" CAN'T be real. Canadian for 32 years, I've never heard anyone say it like that outside of US TV shows.
Doesn't that depend on what part of Canada you grew up in?
Same
Same
Just because you grew up in one part of Canada doesn’t mean you have knowledge about every single part
@@roymarshall_yes but the idea that its a canadian-wide phenomenon and not like, 12 people in prince edward island that actually say it is probably why its so silly to canadians. Like if canadians thought all Americans sounded cajun or something
This guy is a conservative in Canada. What went wrong with Republicans
@inshal6420 you are making a mistake assuming JJ is indicative of conservatives in Canada. The conservative base in Canada is quite similar to the Republican base but the Canadian conservative party has a better grip on it.
@@gaelsarmiento4496 Completely anecdotal and not true. Not saying the conservative base in Canada is identical to JJ but there are clear differences when compared to the republican base in America.
Rush Limbaugh and Fox News
Funnily enough, JJ has a recent enough video on his channel about the differences between US and Canadian conservatives.
Yeah, jj himself is a bit of an outlier when it comes to conservatives in canada
If you cannot recognize how the American right lost its damn mind after 2008 then you are living in an epistemic bubble
JJ’s in-depth content on Canadian history and culture (and US subjects as well) is excellent. He provided me with a better and more nuanced understanding of these subjects.
He's fantastic! I've been a fan for twenty years now. Met him in person a couple times.
OMG. I'm looking forward to this. Watched JJ's content for a long period.
Genuinely appreciated this conversation. Ive always though JJ was an interesting person.
It's interesting how getting an ADHD diagnosis did not change Destiny's perspective about his time in school
That does "warrent" pun intended for the system to try curtail his presidency like the CIA, FBI, and nss did.
@treadbomb it does though. You voted him out.
I like the thought that conspiracy theories fill holes in peoples education (meaning that more education, people gravitate less to stupid explanations)
I fundamentally disagree on the "just teach the names and figures rather than more high concept stuff."
I had years of my education wasted by going over names, techologies and battles of the civil war. I would be MUCH better off if we took a higher concept class about the policies and cultural impacts of the civil war.
I don't gain value from knowing the names of generals for WWII. I gain value from knowing how my state's infrastructute policy changed during that time.
my least favorite types of history nerds are the ones really into a single war (most often WW2), but what they mean by that is that they know the names of every gun, tank, and plane, as well as every major battle and its outcome, and nothing of substance.
watched both you dorks for years. interesting convo with the different personalities and perspectives🐸
19:17-19:30 this was a very insightful and well articulated point (time stamp is the conclusion of his point)
the whole "music is 'left brained' and art is not / I am grateful for the wonderful nature of things unlike you" made me roll my eyes so hard that i can't see anymore. help. my guide dog is writing this for me.
I use to think Destiny was a fucking villain,an avatar for 'annoying debate bro'.Now im just like "oh this guy says things I disagree with sometimes, but me and him overall are aligned in immediate political goals. He's fine,I guess"
very good conversation. thanks.

Like the previous episodes, it will be released in a day or two.
Still dumb that the link for "full episode" is already present here with no explanation though.
Thats some good camera quality.
Jjs a good dude
I don't care aboot this guy's positivity
Debates absolutely have value to discourse. Do participants and consumers of the debate change their minds immediately? Almost never. But a debate is a chance for both sides to plant seeds of ideas or seeds of doubts in the perspective of someone with another opinion. Over the long haul this is how all our opinions change over time. Watching a debate just opens the window for that process.
I feel like knowing us history is hella important to poltics today. Not knowing at least basic history makes it a lot harder to have an informed political opinion.
Increasingly which "history" you know is becoming more relevant.

Not sure what your talking aboot
Plenty of historically more isolated communities in Canada pre-urbanization in such a huge country, shouldn’t be surprised that we don’t all sound like middle class Andys who sound like the American version of RP English.
Very good image quality on this one! The audio is a little out of sync (ahead) though.
