    I think you’re really true about the “history teachers have to relate it to present and be passionate to get engaged”. All my history teachers in high school were quite good and loved the subject, arguably my sophomore teacher was the most passionate about history, but my junior teacher was the one I felt got me most interested in understanding government and made me have a significant interest, because he was both interested but also connected it well to present stuff and was interested in connecting it. It was a gov class so that helped, but he was also just very interested in it but in a way that most people can connect to (where as some of my other teachers while interested were interested in sort of a “this is the thing I’m passionate about” which, while great and definitely better than not caring, doesn’t really relate that strongly to students who don’t naturally have a passion for it too).

    • @JudasMaccabeus1
      @JudasMaccabeus1 7 месяцев назад

      None of the history classes offered in high school covered interesting subjects; it’s all US history or Civil War history, which is ok, but for me things like History of religions, history of religious persecution in western society, or sociological approaches to heresy and heretical doctrines in medieval Christendom, for example, would’ve grabbed my attention, thus I didn’t recognize my passion for history until adulthood.

    I'm a republican that almost exclusively watches destiny now for a left leaning point of view on things for 4 years now. I disagree on a lot of things, but also have had my mind changed on quite a few as well. As trashy i think the left is. He's one of the best they got. For what it's worth, i've been pulled back to the center on a lot of things because I can see the bullsh*t on both sides. Something i can at least say thank you for

      Same! For me I was liberal but I'm recent years I've moved more centered left, which is a huge no no in my "community". So I started to watch more conservative/Republic point of view to find the bs on both sides but also more to think on a topic that I already had opinions on. You can't say you're open minded if you're not willing to hear things from all ends.

      @@JJMcCulloughI'm a bit late and I can't speak for this fella, but I went down a similar path as him. I grew up in the northern section of the Bible Belt. Short answer to your question: Yes, I see Trump's bullshit.
      Long answer: I saw his bullshit even before he became a meme among the dozen other candidates running in 2015. To be fair I've never voted for him (never voted for the winning presidential candidate in my life 😭). In the 2020 election there were less than 100 people in my small town that voted not-Trump. Whole town's FULL of his flags and hats. Other than the president, I overwhelmingly vote more "Republican" than anything else.

    People's views are often formed through social osmosis and reinforced from lived experience. As an example, no one is born racist. They become racist through culture, social relationships such as family and community, and laws. Then is reinforced through negative experiences with said racial group or through others experiences they may hear about. These deeply rooted views are almost never going to change because they listened to a single debate or had a conversation with someone with an opposing view. The best you can hope for is to plant a seed of doubt. To get them to question themselves. If you can get them to start viewing things from a different perspective you can start meaningful change. However, there's not really any way to know when you've succeeded in doing this so it can feel like you're not doing anything meaningful. Ultimately these debates are just going to be a single point in a series of points that is going to get someone to broaden their perspectives. All of this though completely ignores other factors like mental illness, a lack of education, poor social groups, etc. I hope people like Steven don't quit what they do because they feel like they're being ineffectual. It's definitely good to have people who can challenge others views like he does.

    Hey August, I think the thumbnail title as well as the intro highlights are too click-baity for this podcast, and actually give off the wrong impression. I think for debates and aggressive conversations, I really enjoy how you frame both of these things. However, for Bridges, it feels like this podcast is a genuine attempt at productive conversations, and it's aiming at a completely different kind of audience. The thumbnail and highlights feel in direct contrast to this idea.
    In my opinion, I would rather both the thumbnails and highlights focus on the key insights.
    Just to put a dot on this, I think they should be, "constructive versus destructive"

    I personally think I agree more with Peterson than Destiny on average, but I thought Destiny absolutely won that debate. So yeah, one of the things I believe you learn as you grow older is that no one's really that special or unique. Therefore I hope there are many more people like me who aren't afraid to objectively look at the information or at a debate and judge it fairly and not give in to feelings or bias. And I think that certainly is the case, because I was far from the only person who stopped listening to people like Crowder and Owens as they devolved into madness. That being said, I believe the left has radicalized like crazy over the past 10 years and everything that's remotely woke will only end up being a destructive force. So there's many times I disagree with Destiny, especially when his bias is showing. But there's also loads of times I completely agree with him. I just wish everyone would at least be willing to take in information and draw their own conclusions instead of just repeating what other people they trust are telling them.

    The real technological advancement of the Trump era was the discovery that the structure of the American government really had no defense for someone who would simply lie, keep lying, and never acknowledge or take responsibility for anything, and leveraging the internet and misinformation (and the help of autocrats who have been developing their general techniques for decades and supplied massive infrastructure for applying them) was an incredibly effective way to bring this technique down to a personal level with Americans.

    Debates absolutely have value to discourse. Do participants and consumers of the debate change their minds immediately? Almost never. But a debate is a chance for both sides to plant seeds of ideas or seeds of doubts in the perspective of someone with another opinion. Over the long haul this is how all our opinions change over time. Watching a debate just opens the window for that process.

    The Canadians in the comments who say the way he says “about” is a bit or seems exaggerated or unreal is just like a New Yorker born and raised, but in an alternate reality where the old stereotypical accent is much rarer but used to be the norm, and it has been forgotten in history and turned into an urban myth. All the new age New Yorkers think it’s just a thing made up by other people to make fun of them, but in reality, everybody else remembers it except for New Yorkers.
