    You just summarised my own feelings on Avowed. The more that is revealed of the game, the less excited I become.... which is a shame, because I generally enjoy Obsidian RPGs. I'll give Avowed the benefit of the doubt at least until release, and I genuinely hope it ends up being a good game that is well received, but at this point my enthusiasm is definitely muted.

    I agree. There's nothing wrong with the direction they decided to take, per se. It's just not the Skyrim competitor that a lot of people thought it would be. Glad we know that ahead of time, at least.

      @eternal7912 9 месяцев назад +7

      Tbf, Obsidian even said a while ago that it wasn't meant to be their Skyrim, so I think some of this, "its not the Skyrim competitor I hoped," line of thinking is honestly just foolish. That said, I would have preferred they went with a full open world game, as that is the kind of RPG I crave more of.

    • @teamnovember5594
      @teamnovember5594 9 месяцев назад +19

      @eternal7912 "foolish" is way too strong a word. You can't blame people for thinking (or hoping) that after the first teaser trailer. Plus, it was originally going to be comparable in size and scope to Skyrim. It wasn't until more recently that they announced the project would be "scaled down."

    • @Tazza19931
      @Tazza19931 9 месяцев назад +4

      @@eternal7912 Why is that foolish? That makes no sense. When this game was originally relvealed, it had a completely different tone and it was being talked about by Obsidian themselves as being their own Skyrim, in terms of scope and scale. The purpose of a reveal trailer is to convey to the potential playerbase what the developer is going for. Obsidian then realised that they were biting off more than they could chew. They altered the tone from the first reveal, and scaled everything back. Wishing that it was still going to be that big Skyrim competitor is not "foolish". Whole thing just feels like a big disappointment to me, personally. But it is what it is, and I am glad that there are still lots of people who appreciate their new direction and what they're going for.

    • @Notmanyusernamesleft

      It was foolish because outer worlds wasn't fallout. They already set the precedent of differentiating their games from bethesda. (Maybe unreasonable is an easier word to swallow.)

      @@Tazza19931 Just backing you up so you know you're not alone- the art change is devastating, it looks way too cartoony. Secondly, Obsidian is riding the coattails of Kotor 2 and New vegas, which admittedly are god-tier games- but their recent catalogue is very lackluster- the Outer Worlds is literally bad. Thirdly, there is nothing wrong with expecting a Skyrim competitor with New Vegas depth. THAT IS WHAT WE WANT.

Dialogue with the NPC's was just off. The animation felt off, bland, and dated. The tone seemed much too vibrant from what I was expecting. The best way I can put it is that the teaser Trailer way back looked like a gritty, deep PC RPG - and this new gameplay footage looks like a blindingly colourful, floaty, console action adventure. For those who like that kind of thing, great - but it's not for me, and not what I was excited about.
    I wrote much the same, except in more detail, under Obsidians Video, but it appears they privated that after it got tons of productive criticism in the comments, just for it to be reuploaded with suddenly majority positive ones. Save to say, despite still hoping for the best ofc, my excitement for the game has died down almost completely.

      Granted, this is a new, never before seen, region, so they can do pretty much whatever with it, especially given it's established lore.
      I'm just not really digging the feel of it. But what they have shown in terms of the animations and combat is of even bigger concerns to me than the vibe of the world. But that at least has a decent chance of still seeing fairly significant improvements until release.

      I had the exact same reaction when I saw the gameplay trailer, the teaser trailer looked sick, but the gameplay trailer was just not what I expected, it was way to vibrant and looked almost plastic-y, it heavily reminded of the sea of thieves artstyle, which works great for a pvp pirate game, but doesn't work at all for a single player RPG imo,

      @asum7786 animations was my complaint also. There are times where the enemies are attacked in the reveal where there is no physical response to being hit, or the hit animation is the same every time. I'd like too see physical representation of damage done as well. You hit a guy in the shoulder with a sword and there should at least be a wound or if by a fire spell there could be scorch marks

    The overall saturation needs to be dialed back. It feels overly... cartoonish, for lack of a better word. Like this art style would be better suited in Fable 2. The game world feels like it'd be something for Ratchet & Clank. The gameplay almost "feels" borderline Sea of Thieves. I was super-hyped for this but now I'm perfectly fine giving it a very hard pass. I'm far more excited about Grim Dawn's upcoming expansion.

    Additionally, the part about "scaling back" has me a bit worried. The biggest issue I had with Outer Worlds was that it felt like half a game, like it seemed the story was just so short, yet it was still marketed and priced as a full priced AAA game. My assumption is that it will be similar to Skyrim, because I think it's evident to them that everyone very much wants another Skyrim. With that in mind, in Skyrim you very much are encouraged to specialize in something, but depending on the difficulty, you may find it wise to have some backup equipment. Say if you're a mage but you're running out of magic potions, you might switch to a physical weapon to dispatch some enemies. Or what I assume they might be doing here as well is experimenting with enemies having resistances that encourage you to use multiple attack styles. Say if you're a mage that walks into a valley of Magic resistant lizards, it's better to switch to a sword and board.
      If they go that route, a well rounded character might be better for higher difficulties, but I'd imagine you could still main as one class in others. Also I played a bit of the first PoE, and it seemed to include multiclassing as a requirement, so that might also just be the PoE flavor, a character that is not just 1 trick.

I am certainly very hopeful and optimistic for the game, but I think it’s pretty clear that it will not be delivering the exact same product as was originally advertised. A lot has changed- and some changes might even be for the better, but changed nonetheless. And- maybe this is nitpicky and stupid- but my hype started to truly fade once I heard that there will only be two playable races to choose from. Customizing my character and race was one of my favorite things to do in Skyrim (and most other rpgs) and I knew that Avowed’s predecessor games provided several unique, awesome-looking, and lore-rich races to choose from. So it kinda sucked to wait literal years to hear more about avowed only to find: change in tone, art style, map size, and even character customization. Another thing that I'd say really hasn't helped their somewhat seemingly lacklustre showcases of this game is the complete lack of music in them.
    Not all good games have killer soundtracks (look no further than New Vegas, pretty freakin' good game but no one remembers it for its soundtrack, and no the real life music from the radio doesn't count), but I've very rarely seen a game with a stellar soundtrack be bad.
    Sooooo where's the music ? I've also never played Pillars 1 & 2, but I did listen to their soundtracks to specifically get an idea of what to expect for Avowed and those soundtracks are good ! Quite Oblivion like soundtracks I'd say, so why not use some music from the game to give off a vibe/set a tone ?
    Also, I feel like they've not shown enough of what to expect from the world/setting, ie they've not shown enough setpieces/environments (more different biomes, more of the bestiary, populated areas, interiors, etc) and/or items (armours, weapons, etc). Worst case scenario would be that they've actually shown pretty much all what's to expect, which wouldn't be much if that's the case. Like sure those deserty landscapes, rocky coasts or church-like interiors are great and all but ... Are there lush forests ? What about sprawling seemingly endless plains ? Mmmmmaybe a big fortified town with a castle in the centre ? Can we even swim underwater and perhaps explore underwater caves and sunken wrecks ?
    We lack too much information. I can only assume they'llgive it at least another showing before its full release but if we don't learn much more a few weeks/months before its release then I wouldn't expect much :(

I liked outerworlds, the dialogue was good, the combat was okay. But the world and immersion was horrible. Worlds felt small and exploring was not interesting. I was able to finish everything interesting in about 50 hours where fallout 4 and Skyrim took me almost 7 months.

    You hit the nail on the head with this for me. There's something about the game that looks really awful, and maybe it's simply that the game plays better than it shows. Honestly though, I thought Outer Worlds was a caricature of a video game. I disliked the level design (hallways) and I was barely able to trudge my way through the intro, so I'm hoping that Avowed can at least provide some better level design (which is does seem to be doing, thankfully) and not have such a bloated intro section.

    While I did like the Outer Worlds more than you did, I 100% agree with your feelings about Avowed. I am going to pinpoint exactly my concerns:
    1. Art style - I have no problem with all sorts of art styles. So, I generally don't care about graphics. However, this game has a rare problem: mismatched art styles. The realistic backgrounds and the weak basic enemy models is VERY jarring and distracting.
    2. Interface - the dialogue interface looks odd and clunky and makes me concerned about interface design
    3. Floaty combat - I agree combat animations look poor and, on top of that, there does not seem to be any combat feel. You hit something - it falls over, you blow it up - it falls over, you smash it with spells - it falls over.
    Each of these things alone is not super concerning as most could be fixed, but there is not much time left and more importantly, all of these things together make me feel like the overall design of the game is a bit rudderless or lost. THAT would be very hard to fix.

    Lets face it. Obsidian never was great with "visuals" really. The games they made always looked mediocre. But they had really good writing and ok-gameplay. That is, when their studio was still independed. When they had creative freedom. That is gone however. They are not their own studio anymore. So I do not expect this to go well.

    I keep telling people the great games are attached to the specific Devs that made said game, not the Studio.
    Halo 1 2 3 ODST, and Reach are connected to the old Devs from Bungie. Not current day 343. Just because Bungie made Destiny doesn't mean it will be better than Original Halo because that team of people left little by the time Destiny 1 life cycle was half way over. I would love Elder Scrolls 6 and Avowed to be deeper based RPGs and have the dice roll system with attributes and skills like The Area, Daggerfall, and Pillars of Eternity but the likelihood of that happening is slim to none. We already see Avowed isn't dice roll in combat.
    Studio's respect, for all Studios, needs to reset after about 10 to 15 years because that about how long it take to change everyone on the entire said team. Therefore, they must EARN that respect back.

There’s rumors that Blizzard & others are looking to raise the price of games even more to something like $100. With how things are going in the industry (Broken uncompleted games, lots of micro transactions, now rumors of $100 games) it’s surprising these companies don’t realize people will buy fewer games if the initial price of them keeps going up. They won’t be able to get away with broken uncomplicated games anymore if a game is $100 & most people only will buy 2-3 games.

Like how the outer worlds was undeniably inspired by fallout and now avowed is inspired by the elder scrolls but my issue is that these games are very similar to each other yet obsidians have been smaller in features and size compared to bethesdas games. (exluding new vegas obv). Its like why would i settle for the outer worlds which is basically just fallout but with less features and overall smaller scope when i can just go play fallout? Im feeling the same way with avowed right now. Too its own detriment, its too similar to skyrim without seemingly bringing anything that new to that style of game and at the same time being overall smaller in scope. In my opinion, Obsidian has to really start differentiating themselves from Bethesda and really do more creative and new features and mechanics if they want to keep doing games at this smaller level
