VIDEO DESCRIPTION
You know that project I’ve been working on where I photograph vacant and decaying corporate spaces? Nah? Okay. Well it’s a photo series I’m pursuing off and on that involves, well, what I just said. I’m calling it “Dead Inside” and it’ll probably take me my entire life to finish it.
Here’s a sampling of how I take the photos. In this one I’m using 4x5 large format with some Kodak Portra 400 and I got myself a new (to me) Canon AF35M loaded up with Fujifilm 400-which might be my new favorite film.

Office party ambiance with a dash of crime scene photography.
My company had an extensive art collection including some Picassos and Warhols. I loved walking the different floors and looking at the art work. When we moved to a new building, the interior designer thought we needed a new look. We sold our collection and now live in hall ways of beige colored walls.
I would LOVE a book of the Dead Inside series. One of my favorites is the panoramic of cubicles littered with tech and boxes.
I really like the shot taken with the rangefinder with all the dust on the desks. It really tells a story.

35mm shot at 9:13 is so good, I love the way the hallway is framed by the white wall negative space
When something is a passion project, the artistry does show in the results.
Perspective!? I find it interesting that you chose "Dead Inside" for the name of a project to photographically capture the interiors of "dead" office buildings. The on-screen text telling the viewer it's time for their ten minute rest period was good, but the fact the video is exactly ten minutes long is perfect. For decades I worked at a very large, multinational corporation in massive office spaces with engineers, accountants, HR reps, a boss's kid, a boss's incompetent golf buddy, admins, IT pros, etc. I found it interesting to see them start their job with enthusiasm but slowly become zombie-like when they realized everybody's job was simply to make money for rich people.
After enduring the corporate grind for over 35 years, my "Dead Inside" project would include venues similar to yours but they would be active and the focus would be on the people...dead inside.

I like the look of the Fujifilm 35 with the on-camera flash for this series. I think that the flash makes everything look even deader!
Your commentary is as brilliant, entertaining, and poetic as are your photos and videos-love it all and thank you! Be sure to include all the accumulated commentary in the final book when you’re 90, plus a CD or thumb-drive with the actual recordings, because your delivery is also priceless. man. i had one of these lil canons and loved it. then it got stolen. got another, it died after a few months. now they all cost an arm and a leg. still my favorite point and shoot i ever had.
Packed that AF35M for many years. Have no idea where it ended up. As a camera repairman, probably used for parts.

My girlfriend's grandma just handed down her Canon AF35MII to me just a few days ago, and seeing you with AF35M just makes even more excited to get into casual film photography through this. :D
The important thing to getting your art noticed is to advertize it somehow. This was once done by art critics, magizines, etc. Now streaming and the internet is an important addition to this "art advertisement' So, yes people may find your art through the youtube but that doesn't make it less art. I love what you do as do others because you got a show and you were asked to Spain. All acknowledgements that your art is good and worthy of being admired.

Fujifilm 400, oh you mean that rebranded Kodak stock? Possibly Ultramax, but I haven’t been able to confirm.

the results look identical to ultramax, but the curves in the data sheet for both films dont match up

I'm pretty sure Fujifilm 400 is just rebranded Kodak Ultramax, so just get the cheapest one of the two. Nice film, I like it a lot!

On-camera flash always immediately reminds me of crime-scene photographs and I feel like that works for Dead Inside. Fantastic work as ever. I find the shot at 9:14 to be profoundly appealing.

Fuji 400 is just Kodak Ultramax under a different label if it says made in USA on the box...or so the Internet says.
My wife’s company built a new corporate headquarters, that she has visited a handful of times after remaining remote, and they put some art on the walls. She sent me a photo of one and said “why do I know this photo?”. Turns out, their corporate art buyer is a fan of good photography so their walls are filled with Alec Soth’s work (among others). I wonder if one day they will be stuck in a corner of an unused conference room…
ha ha ha I owned this Canon once … long time ago. I did not think anyone would be excited to use this camera ever again. Perfect point and shoot camera.

Love the shots with the Canon and the Flash...i can't explain why i love them,but they have some retro/vintage raw feeling,i am not good at explain haha.I guess this is the benefit of shooting film vs digital...you can shoot something very simple in everyday life and the film makes the magic !
It's so real and haunting that anyone who has ever spent time in those places, it hits hard. And it makes you think about (hopefully) the better choices one has made to maintain a soul. And Bill Rodgers. He will take care of you.
OMG! Nick your video makes me feel real good about purchasing this exact camera just a week ago today. I found it at an antique store a week ago, loaded with AA batteries and a roll of Kodak Ultra 400 and have yet to take a photo with it yet because I've been Youtubing the heck out of it hoping I'd see some good reviews and low-and-behold the best RUclipsr out there "Nick Carver" has it in his bag...daauumm...how'bout that. I bought it for $15 bucks and I kinda feel like this was a win. LOL! Thanks for producing such great content and my best to you on the Dead Inside journey. I'm sure it will be finished when the time is right. My best to you friend.
Love it! There is a certain otherworldly look to a building designed to be bustling with people and full of the things they need to do their jobs that has been left to sit
If your RZ has a broken cocking clutch that's pretty much curtains for it I'm afraid. As someone who has repaired a few that's about the one part that isn't available and isn't really something you can remake easily. Try and find one with something else broken and get someone to combine the two.
10min videos absolutely rock man, love the long format ones but this was a fun watch

I wonder how many of Nick's photos served as references for the artists who worked on Severance 2022, and why Nick wasn't hired for the gig. If I were the director or DP of the show, I'd hire him to play with the stage and lights to see what he would come up with. That could boost production quality even further.

I've got a Konica AF 35mm from about the time you describe and I love that camera. Spookily it looks almost identical to your Canon, but it just sits there for years and occasionally I run a roll through it and it obliges. On a good day, it can turn in a really nice image. Also, today I was at a 'Craft Fayre' (sic) peddling my (cheap) wares and the woman next to me turns and says, pointing to my Zeiss Ikon Nettar, folding 6x6 camera 'I've got a box full of those in my loft, do you want to come and have a look??? mmmm I think so...😄

Your videos have inspired me to shoot my Fuji G617 much more. I’m in the process of creating a new series of environmental portraits using split diopters, diopters and strobes.
While 6x17 is mainly used for landscape work, I’m sure with a few tricks it can make some very unique portraits that tell a story.

Another great video, you are always an inspiration. Makes me want to go get out my RZ67. Love your take on artificial plants and corporate artwork.
As a tip on finding vacant commercial properties: find out if the county/city/town have code enforcement who inspect businesses. They (should) know what properties are vacant and if you are nice and they’re in a good mood, they could give you the owner’s contact information too.

fantastic video! you have such a vast vernacular when it comes to describing the work as you create it, made this an incredibly interesting watch (not to mention just how amazing the results are, especially including the canon AF35!)

Ugh, I'm up visiting relatives right in the zone of totality, and didn't think about the eclipse while packing.
I only had a couple cameras I brought and no appropriate lenses...bought a couple cheap tripods off Amazon and a solar filter and step up rings...longest lenses are a 100mm trioplan 2.8, and a voightlander 75mm 1.5...with a GFX 50R and a Leica M10M....
Will try what I can.....any suggestions?
Great series! It makes me think back on the half dozen spaces I've worked in over 35 years - all class A but one and two of which are dead inside now.
I love the images. It reminds me of the photos by Lars Tunbjork, but with a distinct personal twist.
Perfecto!!!! This is one of your best yet! Not for the exotic place, remoteness of the place, the humdrum of our daily lives, but the discards of business office building life we have all witnessed or surmised in our lives. Dang... you get better as you get busier!!! Not going to offer a more refined view of what better means... Look forward to the next lunch break when you get one!!!!

Very nice! I loved the very first and last 4x5 images as well as the P&S Canon shots. For me the very first image spoke loads. Perfect framing and composition, with so much to see.

Fuji 200 is almost all i use now. Kodak gold thats tinted green to look like fujifilm is exactly what ive alwats wanted lol

The new FujiFilm 400 is just Kodak UltraMax, by the way. Hoping now that Fuji seems to be ramping up production again they'll bring back the good ol' Superia 400, I'm getting low on it.

You seem to be youtube shy? Does it matter unless it impacts your income? I started watching your channel becase of tiny things I can compare and learn as a hobbyist and because I love some of your work. Giving inspiration to all the rest is of course different. I'm inspired by some of your work and "on the site" videos make me more so. I'm interested in seeing the choices people do and why.

When you sell prints or photobooks, do you require any kind of release for the buildings/office space in the photos? Have you made any videos that talk about that?
After doing the commissioned work for your client, do you show them your personal work?
Sadly that Fujifilm 400 currently on sale in the US is indeed a rebranded Kodak Ultramax 400 ☹️ There is a true fresh Fuji color neg. stock on sale in Japan but that's not hitting the US and EU stores now 😕

On another note I swear u had a video of u fixing a camera focus problem with 3D printing and I can't find it anywhere.
He also delisted the tintype video he did. I just bought a pack of Zebra dry plate tintypes and was hoping to rewatch it to gain some confidence to finally shoot some haha

I've been working this whole time. Joke's on you?? Or maybe... wait a minute. I know what you mean about corporate art. I was asked at one point to comment on the artwork being chosen. I made some comments, all of which as far I can tell were summarily dismissed in favor of...I don't know what actually. Price perhaps? Quantity? Maybe even just the colors contained in the images.

My long project is cemeteries. Yes, im weird. Oh, you should have dragged that plastic plant around and featured it somewhere in every image for a highly disturbing fetish vibe.
What a ‘ing sh*t hole. You capture the sterile atmosphere well, it's a reminder I wasted too many years of my life in similar places, my only excuse is that I had to earn a crust somehow.

That doesnt make sense to shoot analog for tables and chairs. It is exactly where digital is good to use.
That's like saying it doesn't make sense to use watercolours to paint portraits, or something like that. It's a choice of medium based on what feels like doing, doesn't need to have a hard logic to it.
@@diegoscopia digital photography freed film photographers from boring assignements, but of course you are free to use film, but it doesnt make sense. You are also free to use VHS for videos and cut manually but digital editing is made for that.
@@chriscard6544 Clearly you wouldn't shoot it with film, and thats your choice (i dont feel you would even shoot it in the first place if you think it's boring, why waste digital space with it?). But just because its manual and slow doesn't mean its less valid, there's people shooting all sorts of analog equipment, even VHS, because they simply enjoy that particular process. Some people find darkroom work tedious, others love it.
