They are playing live. Its just that their guitars are not connected to the speaker. So its no ways that the crowd can hear. Its like my mic is off but im singing live. Same theory.
Because of the kinds of agencies they are in, it really isn't up to the artists. Their agencies make the decision for them to perform on music shows etc because it helps promote them. That's the only real reason artists perform on the shows. It gets their name out there and gives something for fans to watch. And again, it's to do with the tech so there's not much they can do about it.

Most music shows are actually pre-recorded nowadays. However, the music station doesn't have the necessary equipment and stuff to film the performances + their staff have no idea how to. When CNBLUE (finally) played live on the shows it took so many hours for the staff to film it right that Yonghwa had to go to the hospital. Plus they had to pay for the expenses regarding the filming equipment by themselves. ..AOA doesn't have that much money yet to film live :(
