(Alena) I wanted to clear something up that I wasn’t able to articulate well in this video. I am often asked if I am African, to which I always reply “YES, Why of course! I am a descendant of the slave trade.” The reaction I get is usually, “Oh ok so - you’re African AMERICAN.” And that always left me feeling a bit less African than those people who were born and raised on the continent. That left me to adopt the saying of “I’m African first and American second”, to let people know even though I wasn’t born there, nor my parents, nor my grandparents I still felt a strong sense of connection to Africa as a whole, and that whatever my ancestors had in them still lived in me. Let me put it like this, as African people from many countries who were enslaved and brought to America, we had to overcome many trials and tribulations. I believe God was with us as he walked us into this new land. Yes, we walked into it as slaves but we stayed in it as one of the most influential cultures in the world, BLACK AMERICANS. We developed into our own distinct people, with our own genres of music, rap, r&b, dance, hair, food, and many things that are loved and treasured all around the globe. Our African culture was not only restored, but re-birthed and given a new life all of its own. I thank God that he is near to us because his word is hidden on our hearts. That when we face all kinds of fears, trauma, and rejections, He is there to restore and renew us. And that with every ugly & difficult situation we go through, we are just coming out better and better, more and more like Christ, more and more patient, more and more compassionate, more and more humble, and less and less pride. Philippians 2: 1-4 “So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
I feel the same way!! My family came to United States via Panama, but we are descendants of slaves brought there by the Spaniards via Portugal. When I went to South Africa I felt something deep! I’m sure a place like Uganda and other Western countries on the continent would have me crying like you…I felt closer to my origin…it’s a feeling that just runs deep ❤
As someone who stayed in Bali for 30 days. I think once you leave the United States you identify what fresh food really is and that people are so humble. I lived so well in Bali my skin was glowing and it was so affordable. The same I can tell with your family in Africa. You guys all were glowing, the kids look great. Alena and Joe were glowing and the food you guys ate Wow ! It’s just a different lifestyle. Praying, like I am for myself that we can leave the rat race and enjoy the years God has for us until we go home. Enjoying fresh food, affordable clothes, free childcare, $20 hair salons, massages, and a calm lifestyle free from hate. Sending you guys positivity thank you for sharing.
It’s unfortunate that the food, clothes, entertainment, salons and everything else you find affordable is actually not affordable to us residents of Africa and not all of us have access to those things. But I’m glad you enjoyed Bali.
I grow my own fruits in my garden. I think the fruits I grow here(usa, Georgia ) taste better than the foods I grew in my garden in my home country even though the soil is better there. I think my body likes American fake fruit better. 😭😭
I am Gambian, but I am glad you chose Uganda to explore, capturing the Pearl’s beauty. I think Uganda has done Africa justice. SHOUT OUT TO 🇺🇬 Baby Girl, thank you for sharing your fries with us. 😊
Thank you for branding my country so well and baring our flag in such a positive manner. Many people visit Uganda and speak so badly of the country, it's even worse coming from ugandans in the Diaspora, it really makes me very sad. Uganda isn't a perfect country but it's so beautiful especially the country side is so blessed naturely. I have been so fortunate to have parents from both Uganda and Rwanda and I have travelled th country abit so I got to experience beauty, however I am also born and raised in the capital city Kampala so I have seen rich neighbourhoods and slams too.Am so grateful for my country because I didn't apreciate it as much when I lived there and being in Germany has shown me what a rich country Uganda is when it comes to culture and natural resources plus the fresh food and friendliest people in the world. Thanks fir reminding me about this through your videos I have smiled, cried, laughed and felt so home sick too but happy you shared so much great staff about my country and may the good Lord bless you. Shalom from Stuttgart Germany
I am a Ugandan from Kampala and I have loved everything about this video 👏👍the compassion, the love , the patience and humility, the joy oh my Goodness, I can not mention everything exhibited by your family towards my people, just know that everything was outstanding. I have Been following Elena way back in the day and seeing you with your best friend/ hubby and all your babies in the continent most of all in Uganda is such a blessing to us viewers that love your family . I want to go home now , I really miss me some fresh food and the boda boda noise ❤❤❤

Thank you soo much Joe, Alena and family for sharing your Birds Eye view experience in Uganda 🇺🇬. Alena: I really enjoy your loving and adventurous spirit in every country and culture you introduce to your family. Priceless!
As a Kenyan American🇰🇪🇺🇸 I love that you and your family were blessed to see Uganda 🇺🇬🫶🏾. Uganda is beautiful and very similar to Kenya. God willing next time you and your family can visit Kenya 🇰🇪🫶🏾
Thank you for bringing me back home I've been trapped in USA for 51 years and with an urge to return home from the minute i entered USA from a very young age, no one understood my feelings, soon within the next few months I will be in the place that my heart has desiredfor the last 51 years and your Video contributed ro my decision of returning home
Talking about Caesarean Sections, did you know that this form of child delivery was invented in Uganda and introduced to the world saving many women and children's lives that would have been lost at child birth? Nobody else was crazy enough to think of it as a solution, in critical situations during child delivery :))) Great stuff as always. Peace and love
O! My God love from Uganda 🇺🇬 I love watching all your videos from ugandan and love the excitement with which you deliver every experience you had in Uganda.
I always admire your family, tours around the world from LA to South Korea, meeting grand parents, visiting coralado, and I pray that one day I get a passport that makes me travel the world from Uganda to US, Korea, Canada. Your 3rd daughter is so beautiful yet hardly smiles & seems to be struggling with her confidence. This was me until I got braces & finally felt confident enough to laugh & smile in public.
Your Ugandan ardent fan here the Mazelee Family🥰. Thanks so much for visiting and loving my beautiful country. It's been three years away and coming back soon.
I'm so happy to see the kids are enjoying themselves what a real blessing! You and Joe are the best parents the you have for these beautiful sweet babies.
The Ugandan series by the Maze family is my favorite-it’s so authentic! Though I’ve only been to Uganda in transit to Rwanda, this video deepened my appreciation for the country. Uganda may not be 'as developed' as others, but its unrivaled natural beauty speaks volumes. On my road trips to Gatuna(the Rwandan border), the greenery stretched endlessly, with matoke thriving everywhere and the air was so pure, it felt like nature’s own breath. The soil was also so clean and unpolluted, especially in the country side where you could actually walk barefoot just that it is so rich in color haha, it's almost chocolatey red and it clings to your feet like it's trying to keep you grounded -- literally! Alena and Joe have done a great job with the Ugandan series and for me it's just a remarkable reminder that "BEAUTY TRULY LIES IN SIMPLICITY." 🌍❤
Alena, u r really awesome! U r so open to lifes different experiences, which unite us all. Yr rearing yr kids 2 b so comfortable & confident in their own African-Korean-US skin! They r so secure of their identity & rightful place in the world. I was not. My parents had 2 flee Uganda bc of Idi Amin/Obote. So Im lost generation of diaspora in West. Brought up on fear of civil war & Aids. I tried 2 relocate in 2000-1 but found it 2 difficult 2 assimilate on so many levels: complicated family feuds over land & property. I was so naive! Mine is a familiar diaspora story. Even though I looked the same, I felt I didnt belong. I even tried 2 learn Luganda! But we did bury our late parents there. So I have bitter-sweet tears running down my Bugandan face as I watch yr family enjoy best parts of Uganda: The Pearl of Africa & Source of the Nile on the Equator. Its a beautiful & rich country. So fertile. Has everything: coffee, oil, minerals, fruit, mountains, waterfalls, Safari-tourism including gorillas! It was even offered 2 Jews after WW1 as viable colonial-settler home 4 Israel! Can u imagine?! (watching genocide in Gaza). Please buy a 2nd home holiday house 4 yr family in Uganda & promote her unique treasures. Has so much potential as the Garden & Breadbasket of Africa. We r also a v gdlooking race! In nicest way, Im super jealous of y'all. Done us v proud. God bless u, Rovianne x

Thank you for sharing your Ugandan experience with us. You and Joe are giving your children wonderful education by exploring both of the cultures of Korea and Uganda.
The 2 youngest daughters hair braids turned out really cute..of course the older daughter's hair braids are lovely as well. And Bubba aka Little Joe is an adorable little guy. Thanks for sharing.
I loved your takeaways throughout and spiritual nugget at the end! Alena and Joe have passed on their easygoing sense of exploration to their kids--they seem generally content in new surroundings and in each other's company, without a whole lot of entertainment (screens). I look forward to visiting a country in Africa (or even relocating) someday!!
0:19 when our traditions and all those things were beat out of us, we created our own AGAIN, which is the foundational black American culture we know and have so richly today. ✊🏾
You can’t beat dna, spirituality and phenotype out of us. You might delay, maybe alter it never leaves. We took all of that plus culture and created the African American culture. We are a mixture of many African ethnicities and created something new.
You’re right. Here in NY if you go to an African hairbraiding salon they do watch your kids and you watch theirs. I’ve watched a number of children while waiting.😂😂(I’m African American)

I love how you teach your children. So much love. This was so interesting." I cant wait to see you let your hair grow and get braids. You are beautiful inside out.

Maya , you are awesome... the way she was adopted to the place as of she has always live there is a sign of knowledge.. je suis très fier de toi Amaya..
I am Ugandan and moved to the USA at least five years ago but I miss my family, the hospitality of other Ugandans, the weather, the food like pasted ground nuts, avocado, Ugandan yams , real pork that tastes like pork, etc... and Munanansi(pineapple juice mixed with ginger). I wish you guys tried munanansi. May God forgive us all through Jesus Christ our Lord and savior
Am glad you chose to visit our country. I would recommend you visit murchison falls national park. Its beautiful with a variety of animals, and the murchison falls on the river nile.
We are ALL from Africa! Homo sapiens sapien erectus originated from the Rift Valley - reason why Uganda, in particular touches the soul. Its like coming Home, originally, instinctively. Hard 2 describe. That terracotta soil & emerald green.
I love how when y’all was at the restaurant everyone food was clearly cooked to order instead of waiting for everything to get done n it just ends up cold n everything looked so good n fresh
This is amazing. All of Africa has so much beauty. I love the food and people of Uganda, so warm and loving, I'm glad you had a great time, please go to Zimbabwe next would love you to experience Victoria falls ❤
Thank you for sharing your experience in such detail. Even if I live & was born in Africa. It’s beautiful to hear your experience & experience another country through your eyes♥️♥️♥️

I'm grateful for it because both of my children were born that way.
Yes much safer back then then now they don't do it the same technique then as now.
Yes, it was invented in Uganda, long before the Europeans made contact.
By the Banyoro tribe in uganda.
To actually be more specific it originated from Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom during the times of Omukama Kabalega
This is a great video. I want to add Uganda to my travels. ❤

You are so real my sister. I really love and respect your personality❤.
Everything in Uganda looks so natural and fresh, I love such kind of environment , I think even the air is fresh❤. Thanx for the vlog

Am glad you chose to visit our country. I would recommend you visit murchison falls national park. Its beautiful with a variety of animals, and the murchison falls on the river nile.
Ya they missed all that and upcountry scenaries
Thanks once again for exploring and showcasing my beautiful uganda❤
If only African leaders loved their county more .we have great countries but they are so gluttonous. May God help us
Please all leaders around the world are greedy thieves ..even in America they are in tears😢
We are ALL from Africa! Homo sapiens sapien erectus originated from the Rift Valley - reason why Uganda, in particular touches the soul. Its like coming Home, originally, instinctively. Hard 2 describe. That terracotta soil & emerald green.
I'm attracted by christianity in this family. This made me subscribe instantly. May God bless you Mazelee's
I love how when y’all was at the restaurant everyone food was clearly cooked to order instead of waiting for everything to get done n it just ends up cold n everything looked so good n fresh

''Mummy is still handling you like a baby. Are you a baby? You're a big girl nah!" 😂 Sounds so Nigerian.

Thank you for sharing your experience in such detail. Even if I live & was born in Africa. It’s beautiful to hear your experience & experience another country through your eyes♥️♥️♥️
Ugandan food is underrated. Yes all fresh ingredients always, no matter the cuisine. I even had the best pizza in Uganda:D
I don’t believe you about Pizza😂😂😂😂
Unless it was from Mediterraneo
