    Funny how times change - I bought a lot of antique furniture in the 80's (because it was cheap) and everyone felt sorry for me because I didn't have new, matching furniture. I still have most of the same furniture, but now it's fashionable 😊

      Lighting is definitely an age issue... it's really hard to attend to intensive tasks or certain hobbies (like needlework) under yellow light. Yellow light's for parties and bedrooms, but the blue light is a "must" (over 60 here) for my home office!

      And I totally agree. I'm fortunate that my husband is a lighting designer and started in furniture design so we have a mix of vintage, mid century, antique and handmade pieces throughout our home.

    Back in the day, nearly 40 years ago when I was newly married and setting up housekeeping, a decorator advised me to always mix some of the old with the new! She called it “eclectic.” I have never abandoned that approach to my home decor, and I always get tons of compliments on my home with my guests wanting to know where I got that sweet, little antique chair (it was my great grandfather’s chair!), the inlaid marquetry Game table (I had it shipped over from a trip to Italy) or my Captain’s desk, etc! Thank you, Garrett, for reinforcing these classic principles! You continue to build my confidence that my decorating is not old fashioned or dated! My living room is designed around my coffee table. My late husband made it out of a salvaged hatch cover from a Liberty Ship. He designed the legs, laminated 2X12 boards and cut them, sanded, stained and sealed the whole thing. The hatch cover has the recesses for the grappling hooks, the metal banding around the ends -- and all the dings from the years of use on board a ship. It is truly one of a kind, and THE statement piece in that room!

    I wanted to have the same wood floors in my kitchen as I did in my dining room, breakfast area, and TV room -- because the kitchen floors flowed into those rooms from two different areas. I had *unfinished* solid, hardwood, floors put down in the kitchen, and then custom stained to match the other rooms. It came out great.

    My daughter and son-in-law bought a big, beautiful house in Charlotte last year. My son-in-law is a chemical engineer and senior scientist with the largest chemical company in the world. When I first visited them, I realized he had installed 4000K bulbs (at least) in the pots and light fixtures! Yikes!! Being meddlesome, I suggested that his lighting choice was appropriate for his labs, but not necessarily his home, and that 2700 to 3000K might be better. Appparently, he changed the bulbs immediately after we left. Good man! Thank you Garrett, for a great video, as usual.

Mostly through the day the sun lights up my home and at night soft and inviting cozy lights is all one needs. The dimmed lights helps the body to understand that it is time to relax and gives better sleep.

    One of the rare blessings about not having much money when I was younger is that I collected a lot of vintage pieces over the years, either from thrift/consignment stores or hand-me-downs, or just being bold enough to say, "If you're ever getting rid of that...." and then being remembered 2 or 3 years later when someone was moving, decluttering, or redecorating. Lol.
    I do feel like our culture has taught people that they have to have all new things, and also to expect everything right away. You are doing important work in helping us move away from this mindset, Garrett! Thank you for your awesome videos! (I don't always get a chance to comment, but I'm always watching and liking!)

    I love the 20’s lady statue. Or is it a mythical person? If you don’t mind, where did you acquire it? Thank you 🙏

      They were acquired from a gallery. I would check with fine arts galleries with great reputations if you would like an Erte bronze of your very own.

    Great advice. The company we purchased our lighting from gave us the Kelvin /Lumen lighting information to help us pick what we wanted. I hate the bright LED even in the bath. More than a bit off topic: would you know where I can buy my Selva bed frame hardware? Our mover lost it and the company that sells Selva hasn't responded.😟

      Thanks so much! Most of the pieces you see were bought new including the piece you reference and are Theodore Alexander. I would suggest searching online for retailers near you.

    I want more details on this roman shade wotu blinds trick!! Is it renter friendly?

    • @GarrettLeChic
      @GarrettLeChic  Год назад +1

      It could be. Depends on the space and if your landlord or rental community allows you to have that type of window covering and if they are ok with you changing it back when you move.

    Thank you for your ever interesting videos. We are building a house. In the livingroom we have a kind of bay arrangement of the windows, like a half circle, consisting of 3 windows each side and a double door in the middle, leading out to the terrace. I can`t make up my mind about how to place curtains, nobody can look into our living room - and the distance between each window is only about 10cm/4inches, and I feel it would really be crowded with curtains all the way.. I have thought that maybe no curtains would be best, maybe plants instead. What to do? Have you got an idea, please, I would really appreciate it. Love from Sweden.

    Are old much loved "sculptured" cat trees a design no-no?

    • @GarrettLeChic
      @GarrettLeChic  Год назад +1

      I think it depends on the condition and sometimes we have to make accommodations for our pets enjoyment regardless of what would be considered elevated design. I think if the cat has been using it and enjoying it that’s an important consideration.
