  • Official Simple Little Life video of: Tool time Tuesday - Foredom Rotary Tool. In this edition of Tool Time Tuesday, a look at one of my favourite knife making tools. The Foredom rotary tool. Think of it as a dremel on steroids.
There are lots of options for hand pieces, mounting options for the motors and of course the type of bits and burrs you can use. I'm just showing some of the main ones I use for knife making and why I use them.

    About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

    Jeremy
Don't apologize for your neighbor's tractor noise. It's great to know that there are still people doing videos in their actual work environments. Far too many folks these days are shooting in sterile studio settings. Me, personally, I love the real world aspect of what you're doing, don't stop. Please do a video of your Foredom in an actual knife making project. I carved birds for years and bought a Foredom 25 years ago, before they got fancy with all the cutter options. It NEVER let me down. I stlll use mine with Carbide cutters for jimping mostly. I have an old R series.

This came up in my feed. Really like the mount. Simple and efficient. Nice. I use a Foredom TX daily and also own a SR. I have a couple of other flexshafts/motors and am not embarrassed to tell you that I killed my first SR after about a couple of years of complete abuse. If you're doing heavy duty work - I work with metal - consider either a SR with a square shaft or the TX with either shaft, keeping in mind that a square shaft limits the handpiece options. I did not opt for a square shaft on my TX and haven't felt the need.
Too, if you're buying one new, consider opting for the metal pedal. It's a few bucks more, and offers noticeably more control and ease of use. Not as tiring. As for performance, the TX can spin 3" wire wheels with ease and run them _aggressively_ for as long as necessary. The SR is a little more limited. Depends on one's intended application. Good luck.

Hi Jeremy: Enjoyed you Foredom video. My Foredom and # 44 handpiece are 50 years old and it's been my go to rotary tool forever.Being a retired dentist ,I have had "some" experience with these tools. I was wondering if you use various grit sanding discs. There is a company E.C. Moore Precision Abrasives, they have a system that combines a special mandrel with snap on discs. I saw in your block that your mandrels are pin screw type. These quick type snap discs make life much more simple.

Bought a Foredom knock-off (1/4 hp!!) and really like it. Agree: solid mount it - it jerks off hangers on start - Great power: If it starts to bog, unlike a Dremel, just give it more gas on the foot pedal. Plenty of torque. Have used mine with a cutting wheel just as I would my metal bandsaw on solid steel up to 1/4 inch. Gonna give my Dremel to my daughter..... :/

Thanks for the excellent vid! If you look close at my profile pic the knife you see is totally finished with my Foredom (the main shape is done with a zip disk on an angle grinder). I started out making knives in the late 60's. I had to either use stationary grinders or take the temper out of the metal (I mainly use files and rasps) and file them with flat bastards, half rounds and rat tails. Re- heat treat and temper, then do finishing with the high speed buffers. Everything changed when I got introduced to the Foredom back in the early 90's and the amount of carvings I've done with it are phenomenal! I've even made my own mini circular saw blades for long fine cuts. I don't know how often you use yours but I've gone through 3 of them in 30 years... the more hand-pieces you have the longer everything lasts. AND DON'T USE TOO MUCH GREASE ON THE FLEX SHAFT! Cheers!

I have a Foredom, but to be honest, a Dremel or even a Dremel knockoff with a flex shaft works just as well. The Foredom broke down and it's too costly to fix, so I bought a rotary tool from Princess Auto for $80 and it works great.

Hey great vids , what or where would you recommend for a foredom for a guy like me that's on a limited budget. I couldn't afford the 500$ unites so what about used ? And I mostly would use a 1/4 bits

    • @felixf5211

On a limited budget, HFT sells a fairly decent flexshaft grinder. Its pedal is the weak spot. Replacing it with a genuine Foredom pedal would put you in the $100 area for the whole thing. I have it. Good luck.

His is a real Foredom. Beware of ones sold on eBay or Amazon that claim they are Foredom. Real ones start at around $250 or $300. The fakes go for around $60 to $120. I have read many positive reviews on these knockoffs, but I wouldn't trust them. Prodigy and Grobet make a more affordable but less powerful machine. My Prodigy is 1/8 hp. It works great. Anyway, just a heads up.

no kidding, I'm an equine dental technician, and we sometimes use foredom hand bits with crazy fast Makita motors to grind the horses incisors.

I have both. It compares to a genuine SR very well, other than its pedal.

Yeah not cheap that's for sure. But, it's just like everything in life. The good stuff usually costs more. Then it's a matter of if you would use it all the time or not. I just burned up a dremel, so going through one a year (or even less time) this should pay for itself and save me money in the long run. But yup, ain't cheap.

Drool. Too bad my wife bought me a Dremel 4k last Xmas, and I haven't yet given her a reason for needing more horsepower.

Downvote for asking you're own question (What is a foredom), then answering it. THats a cringeworthy thing to do.
