Just an FYI to anyone looking to check their automatic transmission fluid level in their 01-05 Civic (non-CVT)... the Honda owner’s manual states to get the car up to operating temperature, TURN THE ENGINE OFF, and WAIT 60 seconds but no more than 90 seconds to check the fluid level. I have never had to do the check this way with any other car, but the manual is very specific about this with this Civic.
Having just finished replacing the transmission in my daughter’s car, I would suggest very highly that you read your manual for the correct method of checking and only use the Honda ATF-Z1 (ATF-HG DW1, now I believe) ATF fluid if replacement is necessary.
I love your videos, 1A AUTO, but maybe you should re-film this one so that people have the correct information.
I was very disappointed in your “most cars are checked while running” reply to someone else that also pointed out your mistake. Apparently, this Civic is not “most cars” and a video actually representing the difference in checking this car as opposed to “other” cars would be very important.

The coolant reservoir in this car doesn't have a "FULL" line. It's "MIN" and "MAX". And you're using green coolant in a Honda that specifies the blue coolant for Asian vehicles.

I can’t see the min and max fluid for the coolant when I fill it. I know where it’s located but can’t see it, it sucks.

The radiator can be low but the reservoir tank at perfect level? In that case you add to radiator directly?

+MaturusTV Thank you for checking us out. Most applications require the vehicle to be at operating temperature and in neutral to get an accurate reading. We recommend to follow the dealership's advise however. 1aauto.com

correct, get radiator to operating temperature, turn off motor then wait 1 minute and check atf with motor left off.

    • @jamminjake117
      @jamminjake117 6 лет назад +1

Most vehicles you want the engine on and running at operational temperature. Hondas are one of the few cars that require a cool check. Engine must be off to get a reading.

This is from Haynes, 2001 to 2011 Honda Civic Automatic transaxle fluid level check:
      haynes.com/en-us/car-manuals/honda/civic/2001-2011/on-demand/17-gas/fluid-level-checks
31 If the vehicle has not just been driven, park the vehicle on level ground, set the parking brake and start the engine. While the engine is idling, depress the brake pedal and move the selector lever through all the gear ranges, beginning and ending in Park
32 With the engine still idling, remove the dipstick from its tube. Check the level of the fluid on the dipstick and note its condition (see illustrations)
Having all these opposing instructions are a PITA!

I'm fine with checking oil, transmission fluid, and the radiator coolant level. However, I have trouble checking fluid levels in containers that have "min" and "max" lines because they're difficult for me to see through. I've tried checking these containers (such as for brake fluid and the coolant reservoir) during the daytime when the sun is shining and using a flashlight, and I've even gently rocked the car back and forth to see if I could observe the liquid level sloshing back and forth, but have not had success.
Are there any tricks you could recommend for me?
In the case of the coolant reservoir, do I not see the liquid level because it's potentially empty? It's a 2015 civic with about 17,500 miles, so relatively new, but do even newer cars perhaps run out of coolant in the reservoir?
Thanks very much in advance. These fluid checks have been perplexing me, and I'd like to keep on top of them.

I found the check on the radiator coolant tricky to do as well but managed to check the level by using a bright flashlight and shining it through the side of the reservoir since you cannot access the rear of the reservoir.

All of my clear tanks are so old and dirty on the outside that I can't get a clear reading (coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid). Is there a way to take the tanks out safely and easily to clean, or a cleaning supply that I can simply use?

Does the coolant in the radiator need to be all the way up to the neck level like you are showing? Mine is not but the expansion tank is slightly over the max line so I don't know if it would be wise to top off the radiator.

I'm only guessing but I'd compromise.. if slightly over in expansion tank then slightly under in the radiator 🤷‍♂️

I drive an 02 civic coupe AT and in order to check the trans fluid properly you’re supposed to have the vehicle OFF after driving it and reaching normal operating temps. If I check it with the vehicle running the fluid return pours back into the trans case right where the hole is for the dipstick. This car must be a manual?

Sounds like it has intake leaks from that ram air intake, it causes the engine to idle loudly with gurgling, rattling sounds. Mine sounded like that until I started using T-bolt clamps and proper 4-ply silicone couplers, instead of hose clamps and cheap, thin couplers. Hose clamps just don't work because they allow leaks through the gap in pressure where the screw is. Now my engine idles smoothly.
