It's weird, every time I think of 1984, it's always summer, the beach and awesome music.. The girls were the inspiration and heart of the 80's and Rock. Man it's like yesterday!
I don't know if you had Canada's Much Music, but this was an Amazing time for us, intro to more than 4 TV channels and 24/7 music of all our heros of Rock.
1984 was definitely a different place and time. There is no way that in 35 years we will be talking about the current top 5 songs. Most will be forgotten. 1984 was a strong year for memorable singles and songs. This was a fun video. Thanks again, Adam.
1984 was also the year of Cyndi Lauper, who had an amazing chart run that year with "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," "Time After Time," "She Bop," and "All Through the Night."
YES!! So underrated!! I love her. Not taking anything from Madonna. But everyone was so infatuated with Madonna I feel like Cyndi was overlooked more than she should of been. Great artist. ❤️💜💚
Money Changes Everything. When You Were Mine. Damn. Who knew back then that the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun album will hold as one of the greatest of the 80s?
Duran Duran is my favorite musical group of all times. The reworking by Nile Rodgers of The Reflex was unbelievable. STILL one of my Top songs. I was 17 in 84 living in Florida. I bought all of the Duran Duran music I could find back then. They are STILL relevant TODAY.
If you close yours eyes Prof sounds like a young Casey. He’s our GenX’er who took over. Great voice and great stories, plus he’s cool. Only one that I can think of. Nobody else comes close.
Love listening to you Prof!! I was born in '66 &was exposed to the music from the fifties through now, your knowledge is amazing! Thanks for doing what you do!! 😁💖
I agree! I used to really enjoy listening to the American Top 40 every weekend back in the 80s. I must say, I liked Rick Dees' countdowns just as well too. Those days were great times and would love to have them back. I certainly miss them. God bless, everyone. 🙂

Thanks for this trip down memeory lane Professor. I was 17 in 1984 and loved every one of these songs. The 1980's were a blast and still my favourite decade for music.
FIRST!!!!!!! I LOVE this channel! Thanks so much, Prof.of Rock, for everything you do for all of us music junkies! Glad you gave Huey Lewis and the News some much deserved recognition! I have been a huge fan of theirs for nearly 40 years now! The great memories this channel brings back to me means more to me than you could ever know. This channel is very much like a musical time machine for me and I'm very grateful for it and all your efforts you've put forth to make this happen for all of us! Thank you so much for all of it from the bottom of my heart, Professor! I'm also very thankful that your feeling better and wish you nothing but the best in your continued recovery and future endeavors, as well, my friend. 🙂. Best regards and God bless you, Professor of Rock .🙏. ROCK ON, EVERYONE! 😀
Gotta love the 80s! U2, The Police, Depeche Mode, Talking Heads, Tears for Fears, ABC, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark all had iconic songs, albeit less pop.
Laura Branigan was an amazing and highly under-appreciated '80s artist. She actually did a version of "Power of Love" that charted in early 1988, several years before Celine Dion had a massive hit with it in 1994.
Yes, she was SO amazing. I still have a crush on her... if I go to heaven when I die I hope I can take her out for an icecream and cruise Main in a 57 Chevy Bel Air convertible.
A great friend of mine in high school in 1st half of the 80s was an exchange student from Brazil. He was dumbfounded and amazed Laura Branigan wasn't as big as Prince and The Boss for instance in the USA. Laura was worshiped and adored in Brazil. I had never heard "Gloria" until he told me about it. I think he pitied my ignorance, lol.
I went with a friend & his family to see Purple Rain I was 8! I asked my mom to take me again and she did! They already bought 1999 record but afterwards we went to the mall after the movie & she bought me the album. That was it 4 me! The pure talent and stage presence brought me in and I was forever a changed man/kid! Whatever IT was I saw on that screen, that’s what I wanted to do. Like most though I don’t play 27 instruments, write my music & lyrics, produce myself & write other acts songs as well. That ballad was incredible! Prince was otherworldly to me! He did it all. Still only he & the Beatles had the #1 song, #1 album & #1 movie. Won Grammy’s & a an Oscar! I got to shake his hand. Can u say bucket list? He is missed and we sure could use him today in this politically divided country!!
@@ProfessorofRock I can’t believe it took me until you said Casey Kasem’s name that I heard the similarity in your voices. Now I can’t I hear it, and I cannot think of a better guy to pick up his shoes a deserve to rock them.
It's so good to see Laura Branigan finally get her due. This is definitely one of my favorite songs from 84. I like this little experiment you are doing. Keep up the good work. Stay healthy.
i graduated high school in 84... i knew it was a special time... but i only now realized what an amazing time it was to come of age... lucky lucky me! :)
Oh, Prince was just getting his motorcycle warmed up in this week of June 30th...a month later the movie was released, and about a month after that he was moving on all cylinders!
I love the recalibration concept. I've often wondered this myself. Some songs that didn't do much on the charts when released are easy more regularly played than songs that hit number one.
For 5 years, from 1983-1988, I faithfully bought Billboard Magazine every week. I would pour over those periodicals with a fine-toothed comb. That being said, the timeframe represented here is right in my wheelhouse. By Jove, Professor, you’ve done it again!
Same here... Until I stopped paying attention around 85-86 and then the rest is history, the late 80s were the beginning to the end of good music... Blame SAW.
Absolutely fantastic youtube video. I was born in 75 and 84 was an insane year for music. Van Halen, Prince, Duran Duran, Huey Lewis and the News, Tina Turner, and on and on. Casey Kasem on Sunday morning radio was the shit as well. I remember coming home from church and turning his countdown on. That is when the radio was it. Kasem was on for like three hours that morning. I missed usually the first hour but caught the last 90 mins to two hours and I would tape record those songs on those old cassettes. That was fun for me. Keep up the great work and the channel. You were made for something like this.
What an amazing time to be a young person! To have these songs be the soundtrack of your youth, and coming-of-age. I am SO grateful I grew up in this musical era.
It'a all about money now and sticking to the formula. Which is why every song and singer sounds the same. Except for a few like Adele and Bruno Mars who sings, composes and plays beautifully and performs what they want, not because it's gonna sell.
Yea, now music is a three note melody content , repeated over and over and then maybe a roll in of music or phrase from past. The 90’s bugged me for the flatness of vocals, every single thing was sung at least a half step flat and a little whiny, it just grated on me. The remakes done acoustically were better. Music today is pain to the ears. There is not enough time in life to even bother. The most disgusting aspect is current artists made way more money , literally sickening amounts of money for total bs crap. I don’t even refer to it as music. Because it is noise, thats it
@@Langley_Ackerman19 its all about subliminal programming to fill private prisons. This was planned. Look it up. I wondered for so long what happened and why. When i found out what they did , i was horrified. But then i finally knew the why? I knew there was more to it than what was meeting the eye.
This is a fun concept, very nice idea. As you went through it I was nodding along - 'okay, I see that .... of course that one ... yup ...' But then Laura Branigan took me by surprise. Would never have guessed that would rank there. Kudos for a clever concept!
Adam---The parameters you utilized to formulate the ratings are clear evidence of your genuine concern for honesty and accuracy which shines through on all of your productions. Thank you for your continued adherence to the truth, our friend!
The reflex is def. one of my favorites from '84. Great build up of energy and the videoclip was so spectaculair at that time. I was only 5, but it made such an impression on me. And still, these days I feel so uplifted, dance/sing whenever I hear this song or watch the video. No matter in which direction you grow through the years, some songs just make an everlasting impression.
LOVE the concept here. I say all the time that the most overplayed song during my lifetime is "Dancing in the Dark" by Bruce Springsteen. Played into absolute tedium by radio in the glorious 80's. Radio jocks just couldn't get enough of this damn song. Still a great song that I can truly appreciate now that I'm not hearing it every single day. When Doves Cry is the more iconic song, but I don't have a problem with Dancing in the Dark being #1 during this particular week. It certainly was a monster of the 80's. I remember driving down South one year and listening to Sirius radio play a top 40 of that particular week in either 1983 or 1984, and I was blown away by the fact that about 80% of the songs within that top 40 were still regularly played on the radio, and this being around 2010 or so. But that is how good the music was back then. I think if you took the top 40 today, about 90% of the songs won't even be memorable next year, let alone 30 years from now.
You got a very good point realizing a great bunch of songs from the 80s (mainstream) have become "classics" without a particular reason, so they might pop more than just occasionally in a top 40 radio station . Songs I used to hate just because (like Dancing in the Dark or When Doves Cry for you), now I listen to gladly (considering the garbage nowadays), anything 80s playing back then on the radio was better. I was just 10 in 1984 but music is how I learned a second language!
I’m always amazed when these songs, I grew up with, are downloaded in huge numbers by listeners who are our kids. You would think the record companies would take notice. There is a need for new music based on the rhythms, melodies, happiness and love in the 70’s and 80’s.
I really like this one you did. But to be honest, I believe Duran Duran should be far higher than number 4 considering how they were the biggest band in the world during the period of time in 1984. Cheers!
seems right to me as a big fan, "The Reflex" wasn't even the best song on the album, which would be "Union of the Snake". i'd have it at 4th best as even "The Seventh Stranger" is better especially the live version from Arena.
That was awesome!!!...i was 10 that year...really fell in love with music that year...everytime i hear any of those i go right back to that time....really enjoyed that recalibration process...please do more!!!...
I turned 18 on June 30, 1984. I bought Born in the USA, saw Purple Rain, the movie, the first day it came out an saw him in concert that November. Good times. I really appreciate you,. ☮️🍻
@@stuartleckie definitely not the best song. I always thought Street of Dreams by Rainbow was maybe the best video, but the 80’s had such a huge catalog of music. Street of Dreams tells a interesting story and stepped on enough Psychiatrists toes to get itself a short ban on MTV. Check it out if you’ve never seen it.
In 1984 I was 11. I loved all of these songs. I was confused by The Reflex. Duran Duran was my fav band at the time and I loved the song on the radio. The video on MTV was a totally different and better version. It was the first remix (i think) that I had ever heard and was annoyed that the radio did not play that version at the time. The video was featured and won for many weeks straight on MTV's Friday Night Video Fights (I think that was the title). Fans would vote via a pay per call 1-900 number. I had a sleep over one friday night and we flooded the vote. Boy was my dad mad when he saw the phone bill!
This was a great “visit” back to 1984, but it reminded me of WHY I moved out of the Pop genre and into the Alternative genre. I was a freshman in high school and I started the school year listening to Top 40 radio and midway through, I had moved to WHFS 99.1 here in the Washington DC area (you have heard of the HFSetival). Haven’t looked back since! Yes, I was a big fan of listening to Casey Kasem every Sunday morning.. that was how I kept up on what was going on on Top 40 radio. But truthfully, by 1984, Top 40 radio was dying a SLOW DEATH! Listening to WHFS, I became a huge fan of the Smiths, the Cure, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, Depeche Mode:.: Found Fun Boy Three, Cocteau Twins, Strawberry Switchblade, the Specimen, Simple Minds, INXS, Echo & the Bunnymen, Aztec Camera... Yeah, 1984 I left Top 40 radio behind...
I was into everything back then. I loved the hair bands. I loved the new wave. I loved the alternative rock. It was all awesome. The Scorpions were my favorite hard rock band. Iron Maiden were my favorite metal band. PsychedelicFurs were, wave still are my favorite new wave band. And my favorite top 40 band was Petshop Boys. Favorite rock band was INXS.
@@ProfessorofRock Glad SOMEONE still does... I was never a Madonna fan, didn’t like ANYTHING by Bruce Springsteen, and I know I’ll catch a CRAP TON of flack for this, when Michael Jackson went solo, I LOST INTEREST!! Couldn’t stand his high pitch singing... it always made me think he was desperate to stay 10 years old...
duran duran , wham , and prince are what I think of now about 84 pop was king...the reflex, new moon on Monday, wake me up, and let's go crazy. I just remember that year being like ear candy city
Duran Duran is another one of my favourites, along with Depeche Mode. Have you done an episode on Heart yet, Prof? I've recently gotten into them. Does anyone else think that Laura Brannigan and Jennifer Connolly look similar?
I turned 18 in 1984 and I graduated high school in 1984 and I can tell you as much as I listened to the top 40 and Pop music and rock music I was all over the place musically speaking. I was listening to punk, country, jazz, reggae, R&B, Rap, techno, you name it, and 1984 had an awesome version of it.
That song is still impressive. I wasn't a big fan of it at age 14 but I always (and still) liked seeing live shows at the time and the video showcased the new Varilites.
I love this channel. I am 54 and a youth of the 80´s. My favorite years will be 81-86. I bought lots of LP´s those years and I am still listening to them......on LP. (That´s what we called them).
So glad Laura Branigan made it into this top 5. I was literally playing with a guitar-driven arrangement *this afternoon.* I'm still heartbroken about Laura's absence and dumbfounded that she passed away 20 years after "Self Control" and the album of the same name hit. Thank you for noting "Dancing in the Dark" having been used in the soundtrack of *Blinded by the Light,* Professor. My top 5 for 1984 aren't based on success, only my taste: "I Can't Hold Back" "Sad Songs Say So Much" What's Love Got to Do with It" "She Bop" "I Want to Know What Love Is"
My top songs of 84 would definitely be The Reflex and Cruel Summer by Bananarama...I'm sure there are more I could think of but these two stick out right away.
I was 13. Love these videos. Bringing back memories I forgot long ago. Huey Lewis was great. Loved all his hits. Back to the future song he wrote for it was so big back then. I can't remember it. I remember being in a club in Sanford, Maine though singing karaoke and a guy got up and sang a huey Lewis song, he sounded just like him so I got closer and I can swear it was him. Looked like him but he was trying to hide his face. Wore a hat and shades. Man he sounded exactly like him and he did 2 or 3 huey Lewis songs so maybe he was up that way and bored one night and went karaokeing. Wasn't a fan of Duran Duran except for Hungry like a wolf. Other songs sounded alternative to me which I hated till I got into Pearl Jam and Nirvana. It was weird. I moved that year from Ayer, MA to Newburyport, MA. Talk about a culture shock. The difference was incredible. The music was different too. Newburyport loved hard rock which I had never listened too. I was top 40 up until then. I only liked Gloria from Laura Branigan. Even then they over played it. Back to Newburyport, that's when I got into the hair bands and Deep Purple, Ozzy, Led Zepplin, Aerosmith. I feel like I was influenced by the oldies, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Dion and the Belmonts, then Kenny Rogers, and the top 40 till I was 13. Then the hard rock bands and hair bands from Newburyport to country music from being in the military from 89 to 93. After that I mainly stayed with country but followed top 40 AND alternative. Now Prince was a huge part of my life. Purple Rain the movie was seen many times by me. I over played the cassette when doves cry. Loved little red corvette too. The Boss, Bruce Springsteen was big in my youth too. Wasn't a big enough fan to buy his albums but loved his songs and sang along with them all. He is a musical genius. Love this channel bud. Love how you get interviews with the stars too. Not sure if you like country music but you should interview Garth Brooks, George Strait, and Luke Combs. I'd love to hear how they got their start and their journey through the years in their own words.
One of the best years for music in the 80's. Another fact regarding "The Reflex" is that when it was remixed by Nile Rodgers (Chic) and it was presented to the record label, it was also turned down for sounding "too black." The band fought to release that version of the song, which also attributed to becoming a huge hit. I actually prefer the dance version over the album version. The way it fades out in the middle and then builds up again is great to hear when listening on earphone/headphones.
That has to be one of the greatest top 5 ever! When I was a teenager, I didn't like Dancing in the Dark. But as I got older, the song really grew on me. I love its sense of loneliness yet with hope. The world can be a mess today but with love there is transcendence; you can overcome all the things that are weighing you down. It was not something I understood back then but I totally get now.
this is awesome... Professor, you're definitely my brother from another mother... I devoured AT-40 each week & documented it meticulously, including the prior week's chart position... hope this finds you well... thanks for keeping this music alive!
From March of 1989 to late 1994, I had my "official" top 40 sheets. Debut songs were red, falling songs were black, rising songs were blue & neutral songs were green. To the right, I had the position of the songs for the past 5 weeks. Biggest rising song within the top 40 always had a red box around it. Then in the "past 5 weeks" section, it would have a circle around it (previous biggest riser). My friend John & I would predict where the songs would be for the next week. I always took the top 40 sheets to school (1990 grad) and a lot of people would look at them. It was my thing. LOL! Fun times!!!
I was 19 in 1984. My first full year in the military. So many great songs and memories from that year! I think 1984 and 1985 were probably the two best years in music. I’d love to go back to then.
@@ProfessorofRock For sure. That was that I was hoping for when I wrote the original comment but it seams like it could be a lot of work to collate all that data TBH
Man, this channel just makes my day!! I once had a college professor who had us study Bruce Springsteen lyrics (poetry), but sadly, "Dancing in the Dark" was not one of them... probably too "pop-y" for his taste. Learned SO much that semester, though, and hope more professor do that now. And, am I the only one who, when the song plays, will dance just like they did in the video? lol :D Listen, the dancing is awful in the video, and NO ONE wants to see me dance anyway, but... well... can't stop, won't stop!!! Thanks for all the hard work and dedication, Professor!
Very interesting. The Boss is definitely a worthy winner, but if you’d asked for my prediction I would’ve expected Prince to take the #1 spot, and I wonder how much his longstanding opposition to streaming hurt his standing in this exercise.
Awesome idea!!! Please do lots more of these and keep going with all the years of the 70s, 80s and 90s! Kasem was so amazing and THE PERFECT VOICE for what he did! I'm really happy you are doing this!!!
Thanks for the excellent concept which gave me chills. Difficult decision to choose one song only. When Doves Cry sounds so timeless. On the other hand hearing Self Control brings me reliably back to 1984. It was smash hit even in the Central and Eastern Europe behind Iron Curtain (i.e. Czechoslovakia, Poland or Hungary). Living behind Iron Curtain meant brutally limited and delayed access to the foreign music. LPs and tapes were often smuggled from the Western Germany thus we were influenced by German flair. As a result my personal no. 1 songs associated with 1984 are Alphaville songs Forever Young and Big In Japan.
I always thought New Moon on Monday was Duran Duran's best song from that 1984 album. The Reflex is too poppy and bubblegum to be considered classic like their other songs Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf etc....though it's fun at an 80s party. I really miss those days!!
I remember in 1981 we moved to an apartment with cable tv and it had MTV back when it only played music videos. I loved this video and how much it was entertaining.
Self Control is my #1 song of the 80’s. More than any one song, it brings me back to that time and space. That video played constantly back then, before we even had cable. And I was in love with Laura Brannigan. RIP.
I would chose When Doves Cry. I had never heard any song like it back then, and ever since! I love every song you chose. All amazing songs!! My favorite years in music is 1983-1985. Love this series!
Yo Prof, why don't you take this segment and run it chronologically for every week in the 80s? Start week of January 1, 1980. That's about 520 episodes. We're ready.
Love to you for keeping and reminding 'folks' to some wonderful 1980's music. Yeah, there was OBVIOUSLY great music in the 1970's; but THANK YOU FOR ACKNOWLIGING OUR EIGHTIES. Funny how we claim 1970's and 1980's as THE BEST. That is what we grew up 'knowing'. My dad introduced me to p/floyd when I was 8. Music knowledge all depends on what your parents listened to and shared. You obliviously have great parents(because you are reliving 1980's music...what a lot of your viewers lived through). Peace and Love to you Professor.....always.
That comment made my day: "my Heart spoke straight through my mouth without passing the brain.." - what a great description of having a sincere inspirational moment
What a year! 83 to 88/89 was the best years ever for music. I bought my first record out of my own money in 89, and that was rocket by def leppard. I'd just turned 8 years old, but wished I could've been born 5 years earlier to experience Hysteria better. 🙏🏻👊
@@michaelcrawford5083 I was born first week of 81 and so I have some fond memories of the 80, albeit child memories. I remember watching mtv all the time, and here in the uk we also had top of the pops which had live bands on every week, and our Saturday morning television which had the latest bands on, so I got to experience a lot. It's just unfortunate I couldn't experience the 80s as a young adult as that would've been fantastic.
@@TheRetroManRandySavage You were born in 81? Is one of those era's you had to be there to witness, you missed a lot unfortunately but that's the beauty of Adams vids. history lessons :)
I remember a few songs that ruled the dance club scene at that time were "White Lines" by Grandmaster Flash, "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and the original, more up-tempo version of "West End Girls" by the Pet Shop Boys...
Class of ‘84 here. We had the best music, from this type of top 40 to my favorite....hair “metal”. Great memories listening to this stuff.. thanks for bringing it!!
I can almost guarantee "Dancing In The Dark" zoomed up video views when NBC's "Friends" was in its infancy to re-acquaint people to Courtney Cox's early successes.
all great songs. 1984...the year I discovered music. there's several weeks you can cover that year. thanks for letting me glimpse into my teenage years again for a few minutes.
My friends and I always talk about how lucky we were to grow up in Middle school and High school with our 80s music. So many choices to pick from and you were not pigeon holed into 1 genre of music. You could be a rocker and listen to any music and it was just as good. Long live the 80s and its amazing catalog of music. Plus, there are so many bands from the 80s that never made it onto MTV and their music is just as good. Rock on everyone. 🤘
Sports would be my favorite of the 5 albums. Bruce Springsteen has to be one of the hardest working/touring musicians ever, his song deserves the #1. ☝
Professor love the Redux concept! Would love to see you cover any week from the summer months of 1975 and 1976. Two of the most amazing music Summers of my life! Keep up the awesome work and thanks for reigniting so many memories of good times in our lives!

Oh and there's a book out on the year 1984 called "Can't Slow Down:How 1984 Become Pop's Blockbuster Year" by Michaelangelo Matos. Pretty good book.
All FANTASTIC choices.
What a great year for music.
I'd say..... The best year ever. ❤️
A Comprehensive and Great list, for sure! The 80's produced some of the most memorable music and musicians ever!!!
I'd like to add Rick Springfield's "Love Somebody" from his soundtrack album "Hard to Hold". He's still rockin' at 72 and is better than ever.
FGTH “Relax” is by far the best song out of 1984.
Now that is a good collection of songs, long live the 80's.
The best decade in music 🎸✌🏼🎶
Love it man, I'm 22 and easily can say I was born in the wrong times. I was destined to be a 80s hair metal singer haha!
Do it!
@Anna Trail nice!
Do it, just don't do the actual hair. We need to bring rock alive again.
@Anna Trail 19 in 84 here. Good times.
@@roxannemoser well here's the funny part... I do have the hair haha and I can make it so crazy volume like the hair bands
Ok I’m all about this new series. Long live Casey Kasem.
I agree, long live Casey! Thanks for watching!
Courtney cox also got a hicky from a member of Hootie and the Blowfish (ok, it was Monica Geller... lol)

Absolutely the best channel on RUclips. I have been a Club DJ for over 30 years and my mom was a DJ in 70s. You are spot on every time!!!
Thank you!
84 and 85 were arguably the best back-to-back years there will ever be in music!!!
I was 13/14 in 84/85 and the music still moves me today.
Miami Vice was a game changer for 80s pop culture.
certainly it influenced male fashion.
Film noire only in pastels…
i graduated high school in 84... i knew it was a special time... but i only now realized what an amazing time it was to come of age... lucky lucky me! :)
So true!
I graduated in 84 also! Great times!
Same here. Best year of the greatest era. I believe I was born at the absolute best time to be at the perfect age to experience all this.
Oh, Prince was just getting his motorcycle warmed up in this week of June 30th...a month later the movie was released, and about a month after that he was moving on all cylinders!
I agree with the Professor of Rock: 1984 *was* and *always will be* the best year in music, bar none!
80s girl here! Class of 1984❤💋
I love the recalibration concept.
Definitely 83 to 88. Def leppards pyromania and Hysteria, and everything inbetween.
Same here... Until I stopped paying attention around 85-86 and then the rest is history, the late 80s were the beginning to the end of good music... Blame SAW.
Well a big thanks for watching and commenting. Love to hear from like minded chart geeks! I used to do the same!

I love this concept! As therapy I only listen to 80’s music now. Great Toronto Bluejays number font as well.
Thank you for watching!
Yes!!! Toronto Blue Jays!
Remember the 'killer B's' in the outfield? Jesse Barfield, Lloyd Moseby, and George Bell?
I, too, listen to a lot of 80s and some 70s. Much better than the nonsense today.
What an amazing time to be a young person! To have these songs be the soundtrack of your youth, and coming-of-age. I am SO grateful I grew up in this musical era.
So much energy and emotions in the 80's music..... all sadly gone....
No wonder the world is as shitty as it is now
Yup, nowadays it's a all thump-thump and you gotta sound like a disinterested street-hoodlum druggy.
I literally just listened to the Sports album last week, I pull it out a couple of times per year and reminisce. Good stuff.
Agreed. I loved how the rules were so clearly laid out and weighted. A man after my own OCD heart :-)
5 songs I all love, man that was an amazing time.
I know. Wish we could go back for a week or 50.
@@ProfessorofRock Amen, brother. If only that could be so.
Reflex was so good at that time..love this year
It's still good these days and is one of my favourites of theirs.
Cheers!
Plus they are still à huge touring band. They recently played Coachella.
seems right to me as a big fan, "The Reflex" wasn't even the best song on the album, which would be "Union of the Snake". i'd have it at 4th best as even "The Seventh Stranger" is better especially the live version from Arena.
That was awesome!!!...i was 10 that year...really fell in love with music that year...everytime i hear any of those i go right back to that time....really enjoyed that recalibration process...please do more!!!...
Glad you enjoyed it We've been thinking of turning this into a weekly Podcast. Would you listen if we did?
I turned 18 on June 30, 1984. I bought Born in the USA, saw Purple Rain, the movie, the first day it came out an saw him in concert that November. Good times. I really appreciate you,. ☮️🍻
This might mean that "Take On Me" is the top redux song of the entire 80's.
I’d wager something from 87 would take that title.
With 1.2 BILLION RUclips views alone, Take On Me would probably dust any song from ANY era.
@@scottjones8737 we can agree it’s the best video from the 80s.
But best song?
Nah. Not for me anyway 😃
@@scottjones8737 Exactly. Outside of monster view-grabbers like Gangnam Style there's not much that can compete with it.

I could see him doing this on a properly formated VH1.
How about a Professor of Rock Netflix series. I could see it running a good 10-20 seasons!
Never knew about there being two versions of self control out at the same time. The saying is true, you learn something new every day. 👍
I love it all.
The Smiths are my favorite band ever.
As someone from the Eastern Shore, I can agree 💯 with you, Top 40 was starting to sound the same but a late night discovery of WHFS was my savior !!

Glad SOMEONE still does...
Cool concept.
What other weeks should you do?
....DO THEM ALL (80's)!
I'll watch.
These are the arguments I have with myself all of the time.
There the only arguments that make any sense, even if you never agree with yourself.

Courteney Cox.
Her dance in this video was the inspiration behind the "Carlton dance" on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
Love me some ‘84! The GREATEST year yet!
duran duran , wham , and prince are what I think of now about 84 pop was king...the reflex, new moon on Monday, wake me up, and let's go crazy. I just remember that year being like ear candy city
When I think of 1984, I think Van Halen, Hot for Teacher.
Just came across this channel while surfing on you tube. As a child born in the early 70s but raised mostly in the 80 I am in music heaven watching.
Duran Duran is another one of my favourites, along with Depeche Mode. Have you done an episode on Heart yet, Prof? I've recently gotten into them.
Does anyone else think that Laura Brannigan and Jennifer Connolly look similar?
There might be something on Heart but there's definitely several interviews with Ann Wilson. :-)
The Ann Wilson interviews on this channel are definitely worth looking into, she is very engaging and a great conversationalist.
To this day the reflex still makes me jump out my seat and start singing and dancing whenever I hear it.

My top 5 for 1984 aren't based on success, only my taste:
"I Can't Hold Back"
"Sad Songs Say So Much"
What's Love Got to Do with It"
"She Bop"
"I Want to Know What Love Is"
My top songs of 84 would definitely be The Reflex and Cruel Summer by Bananarama...I'm sure there are more I could think of but these two stick out right away.
Awesome man. Please make this a regular series. Its a brilliant idea.

Awesome episode! From awesome artists! From one of the awesome years in my life! Thanks for sharing Professor!
Glad you enjoyed it!

For me its Prince. No shade on any of the others, but in a multiple choice question where Prince is an option, the answer will always be Prince.

What a year! 83 to 88/89 was the best years ever for music. I bought my first record out of my own money in 89, and that was rocket by def leppard. I'd just turned 8 years old, but wished I could've been born 5 years earlier to experience Hysteria better. 🙏🏻👊

Being 21 in 1984 was incredible, y'all had to be at the right age for it! 1984 was for teens and grown folks!
I'm pushing it back to 82-89. What a time. I turned 12 in '83.
@@TheRetroManRandySavage You were born in 81? Is one of those era's you had to be there to witness, you missed a lot unfortunately but that's the beauty of Adams vids. history lessons :)
Fantastic feature. And I’m especially nostalgic right now as a guy that graduated high school in, you guessed it, June 1984.
I remember a few songs that ruled the dance club scene at that time were "White Lines" by Grandmaster Flash, "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and the original, more up-tempo version of "West End Girls" by the Pet Shop Boys...
Frankie says, "Relax"
Class of ‘84 here. We had the best music, from this type of top 40 to my favorite....hair “metal”.
Great memories listening to this stuff.. thanks for bringing it!!
I can almost guarantee "Dancing In The Dark" zoomed up video views when NBC's "Friends" was in its infancy to re-acquaint people to Courtney Cox's early successes.
Friends was in its infancy around 1995.
Yeah, it did.
all great songs. 1984...the year I discovered music. there's several weeks you can cover that year. thanks for letting me glimpse into my teenage years again for a few minutes.
I had no idea Dancin was bigger than Born. Also I was today years old when I found out "Pray" sampled Prince. Whoa.
when doves cry is just a great song. heart and soul is my favorite Huey tune.
💜🕊💜🕊💜1984. No other year in music comes close to 84’.💜🕊💜🕊💜
Except 1983 and 1985 🤓😃
87 says hi.
I agree. Thanks for watching.
1984 was fire 🔥🔥🔥 for me at age 10! I was obsessed with Madonna, Duran Duran, Laura Brannigan, and Prince!
Owner Of A Lonely Heart...Yes!
Professor love the Redux concept! Would love to see you cover any week from the summer months of 1975 and 1976. Two of the most amazing music Summers of my life! Keep up the awesome work and thanks for reigniting so many memories of good times in our lives!
Can never go wrong with the 80s
You're quite right my friend.
At least, not until the later 80's. Evidence M'lud? Milli Vanilli, rave, almost everything by SAW. I could go on. :-)
Life in 1984: riding home from school in the back of a Toyota pickup, listening to "Jump" blasting on the cassette deck. Awesome.
Back in the 80's Huey Lewis and the News were a hit machine.
AM radio,FM radio, commercials, movie soundtracks...they covered all the bases.
They crossed over like crazy.

And the music video's...lots of them!
Awesome video once again P.O.R.
........ And thank you zenni eye wear for helping make these videos happen! 👏👏👏👏👏
They rock!
Fun Story: Someone here mentioned the group Heart and I wanted to check some spelling before replying. Typed 'heart' into a Google searcgh and it's first suggestion was Huey Lewis And The News - The Heart Of Rock And Roll.
Even Google knows. :-)
