From T. rex to Snake Racks - Why Reptiles Aren't Prehistoric Pets & Evolution Isn't About Progress

  • Whenever someone visits, they're bound to comment on how my reptiles look "just like dinosaurs", but this isn't quite the truth: reconstructed dinosaurs look like reptiles, not the other way round.
    Why does this matter? It matters because an assumption that reptiles are a relic from a bygone era (combined with the widely-held misnomer that evolution is a process of progression towards superiority) leads to the belief that reptiles are necessarily unintelligent creatures which act only in response to instincts. This, in turn, fails to support proper welfare.
    Reptiles aren't prehistoric pets and snake racks shouldn't be the hobby standard.

    Archosauria, afaik, only includes dinosaurs (including birds) and crocodilians, not turtles. Turtles in general are a weird one, no one is sure where they fit, but I do think the way you did it is what is usually more accepted, its just that archosauria doesn't include them.

      You’re right, that’s a mistake on my part! The clade including the three is Archelosauria. Watched through this video goodness-knows-how-many-times when editing and never spotted that omission. Thanks for pointing it out!

    My Leopard Geckos are very clever and it is fascinating to watch their problem solving skills. Like for example working out the best route from their current position to the highest point they want to climb before they attempt it. Or recognizing very early on that the sliding doors of their enclosures move sideways and they try very hard to mimic my "paws" moving them. They also quickly learnt to double back and run up my arm to avoid being returned to their vivarium if they do not want to go back. They know the sound of their food containers being opened. Certain ones in my Leo family realised the advantage of waking up before the others (i.e. before the lights go off at 9pm) to get food/attention first. They are very curious and get bored quickly so I provide them with new objects to explore and regularly add or change pieces of enrichment in their environment. They are always quick to fully investigate anything new. They have an "exercise area" where they can explore outside of their individual vivariums. I am always horrified when I see the rack systems!!

      I find much the same. I honestly believe leopard geckos have got to be the best “pet” reptile - not only are they hardy, bold, and a small size, they are incredibly clever and quick to learn when put in the appropriate setting. They seem stupid in an empty plastic box, but really, can anything perform “clever” behaviours with so little stimulation?
      Thanks for watching!

    There's the same problem with history; people think that it is constant upward progress, and that we are at the "end point." Evolution isn't over, history isn't over, and we really haven't stopped change. A species/ civilization will simply adapt/die out to different stimuli.

      That’s exactly right. The same is true of most areas of science... and reptile keeping!

    I've been saying evolution is about adaptation to the environment for ages.
    It's not necessarily moving in One Direction.

      Evolution by natural selection is one of those topics which _seems_ so simple on the face of it that any man and his dog claims to understand it, but in actuality it is much more subtle than most realise.

    This video is absolutely brilliant and it really highlights how people think it is ok to keep reptiles in tubs with nothing else in them. I always think that reptiles deserve an amazing environment rather than a cheap and sterile enclosure. This was amazing and I also loved the hole myth busting of evolution at the start!!

    I am not against ALL tubs, however. Arboreal/ semi arboreal species such as ball pythons should not be kept in any sort of rack. However, I think that non arboreal species such as corn snakes or leopard geckos may be kept in large tubs with suitable enrichment and space to move around, including some upward climbing opportunities (which can be done in large tubs.) Are you thinking about doing a debunking video on the myth that non-arboreal species do not need climbing opportunities? It's a very illogical argument, as even environments where there are no trees at all are not table-top flat, and almost all environments have a relatively large height element as compared to the size of the reptile.

    • @JTBReptiles
      @JTBReptiles  3 года назад +2

      The thing is, in nature, a 2’ incline is absolutely nothing - if you saw a corn snake or a leopard gecko go over a 2’ wall in nature, you’d still be happy to call it terrestrial. Yet, in captivity, 2’ is the standard height for an enclosure, and few keepers make full use of the space. People hear “terrestrial” and assume it means that the species lives on some continuous horizontal plane! All “terrestrial” really means is that the animal doesn’t spend most or all of its time in trees (or bushes). Personally, keeping both a corn snake and a group of leopard geckos, I find the idea of them living long-term in a rack a repulsive thought - see, for example, towards the end of the video how my corn snake happily sleeps right at the top of his enclosure... I only wish it was taller!
      Making a video of this is definitely a great idea, so thanks for it - and thank you for watching! 😄
