I had the amazing honor of watching the original Evil Dead WITH Bruce Campbell last year, and the man is a GODDAM ICON. You always meet performers and they are so different from the characters they play, which is normal, but Bruce Campbell is JUST like what you imagine Bruce Campbell is like. The man is cool in a way that mere mortals cannot fathom. Also, my wife made him blush at the Q&A and I will forever be proud of her for that.
@@chrissandoval7675 During the A&A, my wife asked Bruce a question and he answered and she responded with, "Thanks, Daddy." He laughed and said, "Keep it up and we're going to have to put you in handcuffs." She replied with, "Yes, please!" Cue Bruce Campbell blushing as he laughed at the joke he'd just walked into. My wife rocks.
I laughed my ass off at the first one knowing nothing about the franchise going in. I don’t understand why some people say it’s serious, I think it’s just as hilarious as the other two. The remake is the most serious and even that has a clear tongue-in-cheek quality.
That car that Ash drives is "the classic". It was Sam Raimi's car that he bought off his mum (that she used to drive young Sam and Bruce Campbell to the movies in) and it appears in all of Raimi's movies. Uncle Ben drives it in Spider-man. It even has a clever cameo in the western he made, "the quick and the dead"
Bruce Campbell is the man. I've gotten to meet him in person and he really is a great guy who loves his fans. You really should read his autobiography talking about the making of the first Evil Dead. It was a nightmare to make but the way he tells the story is one of the funniest things ever. Bottom line, any movie with Bruce Campbell is worth watching. It may not be a good movie, but you'll have fun.
You know I always hear how nice of a guy he is. It's nice to have it confirmed from two people who have met him! That must have been an awesome experience!
The first Evil Dead is pretty good as well. You’ll have to finish the story with Army of Darkness now. Sam Raimi went on to do Spider-Man and Darkman of course, that Oz movie with James Franco. Bruce has cameos in these, I think. If you liked this you’ll like the TV series as well.
Don’t skip over his Xena series, where the star of evil dead gets to play the best character of his career. And honestly, his making the amazing Spider Man 1 and 2 is really what made the MCU possible
Yes, should have watched it first because it's done as serious straight horror movie. Evil Dead 2 is a parody of the first movie and knowing how the serious story went before the comedy was thrown in, makes it even funnier.
Makes the second film way easier to understand too which would be good cause she was constantly saying "what's going on" also imo maybe a hot take but I think the first movie is way better than either of the other Evil Dead movies.
The first film is also the canonical events prior to the events of evil dead 2. The recap in evil dead 2 that rewrites it isn't canon going forward - and only exists because they didn't have the rights and couldn't afford more actors.
@@jaernihiltheus7817 yep all 3 movies of the Ash trilogy have different right holders, thats why theres no "recaps" of it in the movies also if you liked the Evil Dead 2 style of humor and bloody effects, i highly recomend Peter Jackson's (yep that guy from lord of the rings) Braindead/Dead Alive
As a 45 year old who wanted to grow up to be a special effect makeup artist, and a collector of fangoria magazine when I was a kid.. It is so cool to see a person your age really appreciate practical effects. ..also, this was the second horror movie I saw (78 halloween was the first) and the part where Linda is dancing MESSED ME UP. That stop motion is so awesomely creepy.
Fangoria was the best. Loved the display of practical effects. Showing the effort that went into turn someone into believable and frightening creature is something really should be appreciated much more.
Tom Sullivan did the makeup and stop-motion effects for the original film, and the stop motion for this one. He goes to conventions with the props, including the Necronomicon and the minature monster from the end.
What’s unique about it for me is that even though the effects are often unrealistic and, let’s be honest, imperfect in a way that could be described as ‘cheesy,’ the whole film is such a stylized affair that somehow it just adds to the bizarreness and unreality of it. Yes, it helps with selling the comedic aspects, but never overwhelms it to seem like it’s completely out of step with the tone and they always have an unsettling nature to go with them. It’s hard to think of another movie that manages to do it, though many have tried.
The first Evil Dead was made on a complete shoestring budget & was a serious horror. The sequels all added more & more humour. The beginning of 2 was a sort of rebooted recap which is why everything happens so fast.
Yea honestly screw everyone that told her to skip it. It’s not aged that well but it’s the whole experience and without it this one just kinda sucks imo. Army of darkness tho you could absolutely watch with no predecessors
@@Musicm4n93 Army of Darkness is such a weird third movie to the trilogy. Virtually the only two things in common are the protagonist and the deadites.
The first season of evil dead also really good. The later seasons sort of lose the magic, especially when characters get established and you know they'll live. Season 1 captured all the gross out and horror stuff perfectly.
As others have mentioned, director Sam Raimi went onto direct the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy. All of them feature a cameo by Bruce Campbell, who plays Ash here, as a different character each time -- in the first one, he's the wrestling announcer who gives Spider-Man his name, in the second one, he's the theater usher who won't let Peter in the theater, and in the third he's the French waiter who tries to help Peter with his planned proposal, which falls apart. Sam Raimi actually just returned to the world of Marvel recently with 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. No spoilers, but...you'll definitely get some familiar vibes watching that one. Other great Sam Raimi movies include Darkman, which is a superhero movie following an original character he and his brother created, another one that led to Spider-Man, and The Quick and the Dead, a star-studded Western with more wild camerawork and fun style. Also, of course, you should check out the third Evil Dead movie, Army of Darkness. The first Evil Dead is pure horror (and deeply gross -- if you check it out in the future, don't eat beforehand!), this one is horror and comedy, and the third one is probably more comedy than horror. You'll love it, though. Both this and the original were incredibly low-budget independent affairs. The cabin was actually built in a high school gymnasium -- a nearly-invisible element of the movie's incredible practical effects. Groovy.
Raimi wanted Campbell to be his Mysterio for his planned Spider-Man 4 but Sony got too involved and forced him to change Spider-Man 3, pretty much for a cash grab, and he hated that he had to compromise his work. There are some story boards drawn up that show Spider-Man heading Mysterio over the the police and it looks just like Bruce Campbell in costume. Wish we could have seen it on the big screen. Also, Quick and the Dead is pretty great albeit a bit cheesy for a Western.
I see our Nightmare On Beans Street portrait peeking out from behind your shoulder! Thank you so much for putting it up, Joey was so crushed that the PO didn't give it to you in time for Hallobeans last year.
My mother met him once working in Sabino Canyon, Tucson, AZ. There's a hotel and dude ranch where performers hide away. She gushed to him about how much I liked him and his work and he took it all in stride, was very nice. He loves the fans.
I love Bruce Campbell. I think he’s hilarious in every role he takes, whether he means to be or not. He’s been in so many things you might have seen including Disney’s Sky High, Psych, Xena and Hercules, Burn Notice, Spider-Man… I actually think the first Evil Dead is more terrifying, but then I saw it a lot younger than I saw this one.
Don't forget Briscoe County, Jr.! Yeah, I'll try anything with Bruce Campbell. You gotta love a guy whose autobiography is titled "If Chins Could Kill"
@@cesarc.4230 I agree as I deeply loved and still do, Burn Notice, the interaction between Bruce and the rest of the cast, even when on stage together.
As I see it, the first movie took itself too seriously for what it had to work with. They had neither the budget nor the experience to convincingly pull off what they were trying to do. As a result, the movie ended up being more unintentionally funny than scary. With the second movie they deliberately leaned into the humor a lot more and found a much better balance. It is much easier to get away with low-budget effects in a comedy setting than in a pure horror one.
I would agree. I would also, however, caution that even Sam Raimi later felt he had stepped over the line with one scene... something he did NOT repeat when essentially doing a capsule version of the original story for the first part of this film. Let's just say that it is best summed up by Bruce Campbell (if memory serves) once remarking in a commentary track (again, if memory serves): "Right about here is where we lost our female audience... I wonder why? [pause as the scene gets to the point; then, as the light dawns] Oooooh, yeah......"
I agree, the first Evil Dead takes itself much more serious. It is more intense and what humor there is is mostly unintentional. Yes, the budget was very low, but compared to The Blair Witch, I'm sure Ashleigh would get her fair share of jump scares and oh no oh no moments. And besides, Bruce Campbell is in it. The Woods would also be a great Hallowbeans movie.
@@ishtarian Sure, but in my book the art of crafting horror isn't about finding new and disgusting ways to torture and mutilate people. That's unfortunately something we humans have proven _excessively_ good at throughout history. Simply "crossing a line" does not make a movie into a _better_ horror movie, just a _more disgusting_ one. I love a well crafted horror movie (although they are few and far between), but I'm not a fan of the whole "torture porn" genre (Hostel, Saw, etc.).
"Henrietta" is actually played by Ted Raimi, Sam Raimi's brother (who also used to play Joxer on Xena, and has a small role in almost all Sam Raimi's movies). At one point, the monster suit he wore was so hot he was literally pouring sweat, the dripping liquid is his sweat pouring out of cracks in the costume.
I have a special affinity for the first Evil Dead film as a serious horror movie. Their use of the first person camera for the monster is so good, and the mood is such a spiral throughout. So, I kind of wish Ashleigh had watched the first one on a Friday, the second on a Monday, and Army of Darkness on a Wednesday, to get the proper descent into comedy madness.
@@lordtrigon1733 Never said it wasn't! I just appreciate it for the completely different tone. You go from the sincere straight play in the first, to the tongue-in-cheek second, to the absurd Army of Darkness. It's just a different ride!
Huge part of this movie is just Ash goofing around on his own and terrorized by the demon. Huge props to Bruce Campbell for pulling it out, it takes lot of charisma to pull out what is practically a solo role for big part of the film.
First, Bruce Campbell is a fantastic actor, very underrated in my opinion. Small trivia for you, the gouts of blood from the holes in the wall were done using a firehose. The sequel to this is also worth watching. You might have recognized Bruce Campbell from the tv show Burn Notice, where he played a supporting character.
Groovy! I'm SO glad you watched this! I'm even more glad you liked it! It's one of my all time favorites (practical effects were one of the things that made me love horror movies as a kid). I think you'll enjoy the series (Ash vs The Evil Dead) too. But first you should probably watch Army of Darkness (the sequel).
I really like the original Evil Dead film, I kind of think it's a shame that you're skipping it. It has a much different tone than the other films that followed. I'd recommend checking it out at some point.
I'm a big Bruce Campell fan and was stoked to see him in the last Dr. Strange movie where Dr Strange put a spell on him for his hand to beat him up which is a homage to this film. He had three camios in the Toby McGuire Spiderman series. But where I really saw him shine was in the series Burn Notice. More Bruce Campell please.
How did I know "*****" was going to be the secret phrase? Just a wild guess. I really love this reaction, this is one of my favorites now. I love it when you can get people to scream and laugh within seconds of the other, over and over. A++! Make sure to check out the sequel, Army of Darkness. It's more funny than scary, so it might be a Wednesday thing. But it's a hell of a fun ride.
Army of Darkness is my favourite of the three orignal films. Not nearly as gory but so much hilarity. Also, check out the series Ash vs Evil Dead for more gore and hilarity!
Groovy! This movie is a perfect blend of horror and comedy. It'll make you jump in your seat and then laugh so hard in the same second. And, yes, Bruce Campbell could absolutely get it imo
I love all your little ruinings of innocence in this reaction. 🤣 The deer heads and nightmare fuel. This is indeed the perfect hallobeans material and Army of Darkness would fit but would also be a good November pick if the list is too long.
Annie’s nursery rhyme at the end had a point, and it was brilliant. Undead Mom used that trick on Annie, first - to confuse and distract her into thinking she was still Mom. But then Annie turns it around on her, singing to reach some tiny bit of Mom’s personality that was still in there. Distracting her just long enough for Ash to finish her off, and it worked. It’s clever and sad, and one of my favorite moments in the film.
One of the greatest movies of all time. To this day the laughing scene remains one of my favourite scenes ever. Followed closely by Ash fighting and then cutting off his hand.
This and Army of Darkness were two of the movies that were played every time our drama club got together for a strike party. They were the reason why Groovy was a standard response to cool things when most other kids in our class would never have used that word.
My favorite movie. I've been in love with Bruce Campbell for almost 30 years 😅 Great reaction. I'm so happy that you loved this movie! If you ever have the opportunity (I dont know if they do it much anymore) EVIL DEAD THE MUSICAL is a must see theater performance. Splash zone and everything. (My ex husband was in the version that ran here on the Vegas Strip.) So much fun.
Yes!! Evil Dead the Musical is amazing!! Everyone needs to see this! We saw it in Pittsburgh a few years back fir our Anniversary. Can’t. Wait. To. See. It. Again.
Groovy Okay so since you ended up watching the wrong cut of Little Shop I hope when you decide to watch the film Army of Darkness (Evil Dead III) you see the Theatrical cut with the good ending.
This was another GREAT reaction! I'm glad you enjoyed it. If you want more in this story besides the movies, they actually did a show that is pretty recent called Ash Vs Evil Dead which is pretty good in my opinion. There are comics as well, some that even cross over with Marvel! Secret phrase: Groovy
You mentioned your being a theatre nerd during Little Shop of Horrors. There is an Evil Dead the Musical which I have seen many times. And there is supposed to be a production on now in Memphis!
It's really wild being someone who was introduced to Raimi and his usual team from Hercules, Xena, and Jack of All Trades. After I knew Bruce and Ted from those shows, I found the Evil Dead series. It somehow makes a lot of sense looking back from his TV work to his early movies, because I can absolutely see his humour and style come through even in the first evil dead a lot more. There is this thread of classic slapstick in all of his work which is just so fun. And, of course, looking back to see his horror work influence his TV shows and later movies is also fun. The operating room scene in Spider Man 2 is just pure Evil Dead spirit, even if rated PG. And he was able to do it again, better I think, in Doctor Strange.
Whenever I have had to move with my current cat, he starts getting stressed when he sees the first cardboard box that I won't let him sit in enter the house, they are pretty smart when it comes to changes in their environment, give Beans all the pets
So the first few minutes, from Ash and Linda driving up to the cabin all the way to the Evil grabbing Ash, is meant to be an abridged retelling of the first movie. It would have used footage from the first movie, but all three Evil Dead movies are owned by different companies, which meant re-shooting it. So, everything from Ash sailing through the woods onwards is all-new story.
Your reaction made me laugh. Especially you retching at various parts. These are awesome practical effects, aren't they? Army of Darkness next please. Bruce Campbell is good people. You should check out him playing a geriatric Elvis in Bubba Ho-Tep. Absurd, funny, and actually makes some legit about old age and how society discards/discounts the old and infirmed. In other words: GROOVY.
This was one of those fever dream movies for me. Somehow I saw it as a little kid, like little little, and just thought it was some thing I dreamed. Later finding out that it was a real movie. Thanks mom and dad.
I’m in West TN and a friend of mine shared one of your videos with me a while back and I’ve been hooked ever since. This may be my favorite episode you’ve done. Not because of The Evil Dead 2 (which is a great movie) but your reactions. Well done.
Great reaction, still love the farewell to arms gag 25 years after seeing it the first time. Ps the lead is Bruce Campbell who has a cameo in almost every Sam Raimi film including all 3 Tobey McGuire Spiderman films and an MCU movie you haven't seen yet.
Evil Dead 1's ending (he getting sent backwards and spun around like that) mixed with Evil Dead 2's opening blends perfectly and makes the perfect movie. I wish I knew where you could watch the supercut.
When they made Evil Dead 2, they weren't allowed to use footage from the first film, so to compensate they reshot a condensed version of ED1 with just Ash and Linda.
Ashleigh, you are slaying that winged liner! Also, your gag/laugh was hilarious. Hoping you'll continue to Army of Darkness. It's silly, but fun.. Groovy
Ashleigh, I am beyond happy you finally reacted to this movie! It’s an absolute classic and has every right to be so! Can’t wait for you to watch Army of Darkness as well! Love your videos btw! 🧡
@@josephsamuel6097 cause fans told her that she didn’t have to see the first one considering the sequel is just the first movie remade slightly differently
Evil Dead was a huge success on a shoe string budget. Evil Dead II is remake on a bigger budget with same lead actor and director...That is the main difference, in some ways I did like the cheap version better...but it is not bad to see that one as well. But Bruce Cambell is so underrated as a star.

I'm delighted you've now reviewed The Evil Dead 2. How you instantly get it and know why it's a fan fave and so beloved, is what makes you awesome. It's certainly one of my faves and it's a genre defining benchmark of horror comedy by which all others will be judged, it's that good. Bruce Campbell is a horror icon with so many quotable one liners they're sure to go down in history to rival Arnold's action stuff. Sam Raimi's Masterpiece. Army of Darkness has gotta be next as it's ED2's twin brother. Still gooey, still cheesy, still jumpy but above all so delightful. Great one liners, perhaps some of the best and above all campy skeletons that'll make you p*ss your pants with laughter. The Evil Dead Trilogy is really special and rightfully treasured by horror buffs like myself.
Evil Dead 3, aka Army of Darkness, is a must to follow this one. ... Another I think you should watch this month is "The Village". It's got a scary theme to it, but also a great love story and interesting twist in the end. I think it would surprise you. Stars Joaquin Phoenix, William Hurt, and Sigourney Weaver!
Now you have to watch the sequel, ARMY OF DARKNESS!!! Even the TV series they made of Evil Dead is a great time. Bruce Campbell is one of my favorite actors!
Groovy! So glad you liked it. Eventually, you should really check out the first one. It leans on the Horror much harder than this one, with little comedy. When I first watched the Evil Dead movies, the first was my favorite, and I didn't care for the second. However, it grew on me over time.
GROOVY! So glad Ashleigh did the review. I'm thrilled that you said Bruce Campbell is attractive. I fell in love with him in Xena Warrior Princess. And yes, you don't need to see the first one. Though now you have to see the third one. ☺️
i LOVED Xena. Lucy Lawless did incredible things to my fantasies as a lil boy x3 Loved the shows mix of humor, action and interesting characters mixed with mythology. That and the Hercules show with Kevin Sorbo. And how both shows were connected.
Groovy. I’m so glad you finally watched this film. FYI there’s a third film in the franchise called ARMY OF DARKNESS. Something fun to mention, I’ll be seeing that film this Saturday night on the big screen at the Golden State Theater in Downtown Monterey. And…….Bruce Campbell will be there watching it live with the audience, and I have tickets to meet him and get an autograph from him!!! Now that’s groovy!!
Again another review that just cements how much my wife and I love you. And your amazingly diverse growing knowledge of all sorts of quirky, amazing, fun, and wild movies. Weve been watching since your Return of the Jedi review.. and love ya. I LOVE your reaction to Evil Dead 2.. exactly the same as we had when it was in the theater. Now we cant wait for Army of Darkness!!! The next Evil Dead.. Takes up where Ash was left off in the Medieval scene.
I love this movie! First time I ever watched it, I think I was 13 and watched at 2 am. A great mix of horror and humor. This had to be up there for seeing you scream at a movie lol. Love your channel!
Definitely need to watch the first. This one is where they started getting funny, but the first one is definitely classic horror. If you want to see some really great practical effects I suggest the original Clash of the Titans and Jason and the Argonauts.
I can't wait for the Tucker and Dale reaction, such a GROOVY flick. Definitely a movie that could have gone in night-vision...but the jump scares are more "jump-shocks" either way I'm excited as hell.
Such a great classic horror movie. I watched these when I was a kid in the 80s and I barely remember watching the first one back then ( I’ve watched it again since) but it may have been a crappy VHS copy. When this one came out and we watched it on family movie night, we all loved it. I was in high school when Army of Darkness came out. Did you notice Freddy Kruger’s glove hanging over the door in the work shed? It makes an appearance in the cellar as well. I read that Nightmare 3 The Dream Warriors was filming around the same time and Sam Raimi “borrowed” the glove and snuck it into this movie. In the first Freddy movie there’s a scene where Nancy is watching late night TV and the movie she is watching is the original Evil Dead.
And the scene with Nancy watching the original on TV was a response by Craven to Sam Raimi putting a torn poster for _The Hills Have Eyes_ in the first Evil Dead. Which was a response to a torn up _Jaws_ poster in THAT movie.
i just wanted to say that after these horror sre finished you really should put 'Short Circuit' and 'Battery's not included' as a good way to wind down
"Groovy" is really the most obvious quote from this film for you to pick. It's pretty much synonymous with the franchise. I've never found this film scary at all...it's way too funny. But you're right...the 80s pulled no punches with kids. Heck, Poltergeist was rated PG, for crying out loud. Now you absolutely have to watch the third Evil Dead film, Army of Darkness.
You have to finish this up with Army of Darkness - that was my first movie in this franchise, and the first half cracked me up so hard. (I got a fake spam reply on this, by the way)
“CHAINSAW HAND!? THAT’S BADASS!” Now you get why these movies are so beloved and why Ash is a horror movie icon.
He is such an icon that for a while they teased him to be the threesome for a second Freddy vs Jason movie.

It’s hard to think of another movie that manages to do it, though many have tried.
As a long-time fan of Campbell and "Shop Smart, shop S-Mart" I howled at your first jump scare, and thought "Oh Ash, you're in for a ride."
Both of them.

@@thisspaceforrent5737 When this film was made, PG-13 might not have existed yet.
@@Musicm4n93 Exactly.
Groovy.
"Good .. bad ... I'm the one with the gun!"
More important cameo in Sam Raimi’s movies: Sam’s classic Oldsmobile.
He also hides his brother Ted Raimi in his movies and TV shows. Lol I love the Raimis.
The Quick and the Dead is an underrated gem. It's one of those movies I watch over and over when I stumble upon it on tv.
Are you a fan of RiffTrax? Check out their riff of a movie called Icebreaker. A 2000 movie with Campbell, Sean Astin and Stacy Keach. Hilarious.
Don't forget Briscoe County, Jr.!
Yeah, I'll try anything with Bruce Campbell. You gotta love a guy whose autobiography is titled "If Chins Could Kill"
I love me some Burn Notice.
and Bubba Ho-Tep
@@cesarc.4230 I agree as I deeply loved and still do, Burn Notice, the interaction between Bruce and the rest of the cast, even when on stage together.
You don't have to watch the first, but I recommend it. They have completely different feels to them. Not necessarily a reaction, but worth a watch.
I completely disagree. you have to watch the first movie because it's probably the best one in the series. Why deprive yourself of that?
@@ishtarian Sure, but in my book the art of crafting horror isn't about finding new and disgusting ways to torture and mutilate people. That's unfortunately something we humans have proven _excessively_ good at throughout history. Simply "crossing a line" does not make a movie into a _better_ horror movie, just a _more disgusting_ one. I love a well crafted horror movie (although they are few and far between), but I'm not a fan of the whole "torture porn" genre (Hostel, Saw, etc.).
This is one of those movies you can't spoil.
The plot doesn't matter.
What they do doesn't matter.
HOW they do it is pure gold.
Correction: Joxer THE MIGHTY! And, yes, I did sing that as I wrote that.
The first one is hilarious as well, just more subtle.

I really like the original Evil Dead film, I kind of think it's a shame that you're skipping it. It has a much different tone than the other films that followed. I'd recommend checking it out at some point.

I love all your little ruinings of innocence in this reaction. 🤣 The deer heads and nightmare fuel. This is indeed the perfect hallobeans material and Army of Darkness would fit but would also be a good November pick if the list is too long.
19:10 is proof positive that Ashleigh has entered the proper spirit of the film. 🤣
It’s clever and sad, and one of my favorite moments in the film.
its along the same lines as how Ash's girlfriends neckless brought him back.

Hell, YES!
I look forward to Tucker and Dale vs Evil, what a great movie.
Don't reply to that it's a scam
You got the humor right from the beginning. You are in my book of cool people.

Did you notice Freddy Kruger’s glove hanging over the door in the work shed? It makes an appearance in the cellar as well. I read that Nightmare 3 The Dream Warriors was filming around the same time and Sam Raimi “borrowed” the glove and snuck it into this movie.
