The a-ha channel is the official RUclips home of the Norwegian Pop trio a-ha, who achieved global stardom in 1985 when their debut single, “Take On Me” from the album ‘Hunting High And Low’ topped the charts in 36 different countries on its way to becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time, and the 5th most streamed song of the 20th century. a-ha struck chart gold again with “The Sun Always Shines On T.V.” and “Cry Wolf,” and recorded the theme to the 1987 James Bond film “The Living Daylights”. Paul Waaktaar-Savoy is a genius of a writer. The reference to "Eyes of a Blue Dog" and in the video the flash of a motorcycle driver who looks like Gabriel Garcia Marquez... the song means so much more, if you read that story. I wonder if Paul (and Mags) ever got as much credit as they deserve for their lyrics and songwriting.
As a Norwegian, living in America, I have to say every time I hear “Take on Me” on the radio (it’s at least once a day on certain radio stations), I am surprised “Take On Me” was the one that became a hit here. Not a bad song at all, awesome video that didn’t hurt them. However, I dare say that there are 4-5 other tracks on “Hunting High and Low” that are far better. As I’ve aged, I have “rediscovered” the band. There’s so much more to them than “Take On Me”, and this track is one that I truly enjoy listening to, as I continue my a~ha “journey”.

This particular single doesn't get the love it deserves. Truly underrated. But damn what a banger!
Perhaps because there is a true Scandinavian angst to this song, and all of their music, which is a little alien to the Anglo-American pop musical tradition.

@@RicardoMartinez-jy5lo Yes, it's a very classy piece of songwriting, playing and singing - it got a great deal of praise from music journalists at the time, but didn't become a huge hit. And yes, it's Scandinavian - I'm from Sweden myself and this is one of those songs by A-ha where the influence of Nordic folk music comes through: the major-minor shifts, the bright, cool open chord harmonics, something about the rhythm and the drones and pedal points in the background....

How such a prolific band like that with so many classics under their sleeve can be misconsidered as a one-hit-wonder in the US is beyond my realm of understanding..
As a British kids that grew up in the states I've actually had this debate with a more than a few folks over the years but as soon as I mention The living daylights or The sun always shines on the TV they usually go "Oh yeah, huh!" 🤫
None of A-ha's songs has been overrated, on the contrary it's a mystery for me why there's too much bad musical taste. I've never met another band who can give a listener a similar variety and quantity of wonderful songs both in melody and lyrics. 'A-ha for ever' is a shout deep in our hearts and minds like a lightening into the sun.

Kills me. As it's more beautiful and sad than anything. This band truly sums up my every loss and every depth of life. I hv just found all their songs and I was there in 80s but never knew they are the best band writers singer souls ever. He's mind-blowing. All my lifelines hv been gone for decades. Truly. The one of the greatest voices I ever heard until 2021. Morten is truly a genius. I’m only 22 and still dream of marry him hahahahaha 🇧🇷
As a former DJ, one of the engineer's best choices for record / mixing bass and the kick drum. The punch is incredibly well without losing volume in the extreme bass range as so many did; like nothing below 50 hz and 80 to 120 pushed on the EQ. I could push it in a discotheque without it becoming gibberish.
