Great video! Thanks for uploading it, it seems to be one of the most in detail and still accessible presentations on that topic one can find on the internet.
My total iron count is 213, but ferritin is normal. Trying to figure out what's going on. I don't take iron supplements, don't eat a lot of red meat, no longer cook in a cast iron pan, I've reduced alcohol in take and still my total iron is too high. What's more is I'm a menstruating woman 42 yrs old. I've also recently begun experiencing premature atrial contractions (PACs), an arrhythmia that feels like my heart is fluttering.
@@christopherchildres8178 well jjst because you stop what caused the overload doesn't mean levels will drop..chris already said you should do phlebotomy 3 years before this video
Thank you so most for posting this. There is hardly any information about the reason for this online. How do you maintain normal iron levels after you found out you have this gene mutation? Do you just donate blood regularly?
I have been trying to get my ferritin up for 6 years. My saturation is 55% and when I look back at labs it was as high as 78%. My ferritin is a 22 now but was an 8 back in April.
The only thing that my family doctor told me to do was to stop cooking with iron pans. He never said anything about getting my HFE gene checked. Should I talk to him about this? Also, does doing any kind of heavy metal detox help with reducing my iron load? Thanks!
Great Info, I have chronically high ferriton (5years), and my TIBC and Transferrin is on the lower side. I have the H63D gene. The one time I go to the hematologist my ferriton hit the normal range. Where should I go from here?
Hey Chris, I also thought you may find this video interesting. "How I Fixed My Low (free) Testosterone: High SHBG & Iron Overload" By EONutrition It's an absolutely fascinating topic, and appears to be something that requires a further degree of research/understanding for clinicians. I have seen reports of people with alarming (60+) saturation levels and low ferritin being told that this is "normal".
Hi Chris, my ferritin has been bouncing from normal to low for a couple years now and the doctors have not been able to tell me how to improve it. My iron saturation has also been bouncing from normal to high. I have tested positive for ONE HFE GENE PATHOGENIC VARIANT: H63D (HETEROZYGOTE). I don’t eat red meat and try to stay to a mostly vegetarian diet. I was wondering if you could give me some insight. These are my current levels. TIBC 291 Iron 151 Saturation 52 Ferritin 27 B12 954 Hemoglobin 15.3 Thanks in advance for your response.
Sounds like very early hemochromatosis and you might benefit from blood donation and “antioxidants” to increase the ferritin. However, it’s possible other things are going on with copper and such that are impacting this.
@@chrismasterjohn thank you so much for your response. I have donated blood in the past and it completely wiped me out for two days. I’m literally on the couch just not having any energy to do anything. Which is frustrating cause I am a very active person and I run all the time.
I had that Question last year~High saturations but low ferritin. Dr could not answer. . I've been tested for Polysythemia twice...both times negative. Thanks for answering~!
I have the C282Y mutation and my transferrin % is usually between 70-90% when tested, except when my ferritin was really low from a number of blood donations. Although my health wasn't perfect I was a LOT more stronger and fitter in my high ferritin (300-450) days, before a heap (more than 8) of therapeutic blood lets. I wish I hadn't have done so many, but I was directed by a hematologist.
@@chrismasterjohn How do you mean? Currently my ferritin is around 50 and last test showed transferrin sat @ 70%. I have seen transferrin sat lower than 70% with a ferritin of 80 & 130 so I won't be giving blood for a long time, if ever. That was a very costly mistake, trusting allopathic doctors. And it could have been rather catastrophic, as I went to the Himalayas, hiking up to 5000m above sea level, trying to get to 6100m/20,000ft with low iron.. so compromised oxygen carrying capabilities. One phlebotomy was probably more than enough, given I had moved on to a vegetarian diet with lots of yogurt and eggs.
I have the exact same situation. I have HH, C282Y homozygous, diagnosed late 90s. My serum ferritin managed through theraputic phlebotomies to maintain < 50. However, my iron saturation remains in the 70% range while my serum ferritin stays below 50. The "firemen" showed up with the "paramedics!" iron destroyed my joints. Six surgeries. Now in my 70s I'm still trying to figure out what works. The comment by Chris Masterjohn, "sounds like you are straddling two problems, and you only know one" may be correct. It just adds to the puzzle of figuring out what is going on.
@@ldo96 Yeah, he may as well have not commented at all. My ferritin was 112 as of a few days ago, which I'm not worried about. Transferrin sat can fluctuate a lot. Sounds like you caught the high ferritin a bit late, what was the highest you saw it? I think there can be multiple factors in involved with joint degradation.
Yea, it was caught after the damage had started. The cartilage in my hips, ankles, and digits, really took the brunt of the damage. It has been a lifetime of educating myself. Even at 70 I'm still finding new info. I always based my phlebotomy on my ferritin being >50. According to Chris Masterjohn, PhD (Nutritional Sciences from the University of Connecticut), he states, that ferritin does not tell you how much iron is in the blood, rather, it reveals that there is oxidative stress, and damage occurring. He further stated that the defect in HH is that you do not stop absorbing iron when you have enough and you do not put the iron into ferritin when you have too much. (Hepcidin doesn’t tell the portal to close and limit iron absorption). I believe that ferritin is an indicator of inflammation, however, now I am unsure what is the accurate method of determining I have too much iron and require a therapeutic phlebotomy. Iron saturation? Ferritin? Still searching... God Bless
That was brilliant. I have the more severe form of harmachromatosis with transferin saturstion at 61% and serum ferritin at 196 and have chronic haemaplegic migraines for 20 years, I wonder if one affects the other. Never feel well!!
I have high Iron saturation for the last 9 years 55-60%. But my ferritin is normal Although it has risen from 98-170 over the last 9 years. I Feel crappy, tired, low libido, GI. Brain fog. My doctor keeps telling me my ferritin is “normal”. I don’t feel normal. Also my GI specialist is not concerned. I need help! Just finding the right doctor. I live in Massachusetts. Also. Will donating blood lower my iron saturation?
Probably. Sounds like me. I'm H63D/H36D and definitely feel like shit if my iron saturation is in the 50s, and those doctors have no idea what they are talking about.
My iron is 158 (37-145normal) and my ferritin is 13 ( 8-252 normal) My doctor wants me to take iron supplements. My diet is rich is iron and my iron is high. Why would I need supplements?
Omg, same. Always low ferritin (26), quite high iron (150), and problems with low neutrophils. It turned out my iron saturation is 55%. I started having problems with fatty liver, case unknown. I have a few other health problems, I don't feel good and doctors look at like i'm an idiot. It's so sad
Also can this come out the blue? This was all checked 3 months ago it was fine .. now it’s not . But my hemoglobin has been raised and rbc for 3 months
This interesting, just read something about bloodletting until you induce a state of anemia. I wonder if when a person is anemic the body naturally will start pulling iron out of organs? Also kind of funny, this sounds like it's one of the few reasons why bloodletting historically made sense, I wonder if hemochromatosis was more common in the age where cousins were always marrying each other.

How to lower transferrin saturation? I have low ferritin and high saturation, I think from testosterone replacement therapy’s effect on hepcidin.
