  • The flexible drive shaft on your string trimmer is a part that will wear out over time. In this video, Mark shows you how to replace a worn or broken drive shaft. We used an Echo GT-225 string trimmer for this repair, but the steps will be similar for most trimmers.

YaaY!!!! Thank you sooo much!!!! I saved about $70 in repairs. I purchased the cable from ereplacements for about $17. Other small engine stores and Ace said the cable would cost $30+. Turns out I didn't need the cable because mine had just dislodged from its housing. I'm back in business again!!! Thanks again for sharing and empowering me with your knowkedge!

I work for Sears Lawn and Garden Technical phone help and I just wanted to say thank you for facilitating my ongoing learning process that is not afforded me at work. We get a few weeks training and a few weeks on the phone training on then we are expected to trouble shoot and tell people how to repair their L&G equipment like a pro. Thanks to videos like these Sears customers have at least one fairly learned advocate for them when all goes wrong. Keep up the good work!

I do appreciate you taking the time to create and post this helpful video, and it did help me somewhat. However, you make no mention of what to do in the event the trimmer head brass pulley drops down from the encasing shaft, allowing the internal drive shaft to disengage from the pulley head. I found no information on this particular problem (which is why I started searching) so, I merely used a cold chisel to crimp the encasing shaft around the bass pulley head, after cleaning the nut piece attached to the bass pulley head, and sliding the brass pulley head into the encasing shaft. It works! Now comes the test of time. Again, thank you. SeniorSurveyor

I have a Gt225 as well. When you lubricate the shaft every 3 months or 90 hours, the manual indicates that this operation is performed by removing the cutter head and removing the shaft that way. The shaft comes completely out of the machine. You can replace it that way as well. The manual calls for Power BlendX grease, part number 91014' or any lithium based grease.

worked like a charm! I did have to remove the shaft head because the cable wouldn't slide in as easy as you showed but all in all it worked perfectly!

Many trimmer manufactures offer their own grease for this repair so check your owners manual first. If not, a general purpose chassis grease or wheel & bearing grease seems to work fine.
    Thanks for watching,

You will need to remove the tube end on near the trimmer head if possible. If the end is not removable then you will likely need to replace both the cable and the shaft.
    Good luck with your repair,

Could someone tell me please. exactly the correct length of the drive cable for a PP135? And possibly a picture of the correct one?
I had mine apart and stored until I moved but can not find the shaft. Someone gave me one saying that they basically were all the same but it appears this one is too short.
I'd prefer not to start whacking the tube itself if I don't have to so I wish to make sure of the length and the part the shaft itself slides into and then fit into the tube,
    Thank you,
    John

Question: I have a GT-255, just like the one you repaired. However, the shaft will not fit back into the engine housing as yours did. There's about an inch between the motor housing and the black line/black triangles, which on your machine are flush with the engine housing. How do I get the shaft back in where it belongs? Thanks.

mines broken at the bottom, i took the engine loose from the shaft housing and the whole drive shaft came out from the break UP. i do not see how to get the shaft wire off the Centrifugal clutch or how to get the piece off the other end. doesn't come out like you just pulled that off, it;s stuck right in the Centrifugal clutch housing.

+Gordon Paterson Most shafts are squared at either end. Either way works fine for these. Some models have shaft with either a washer or bulb piece affixed to the cable. The washer will go to the end with the head.

Parts are not often interchangeable between manufacturers but it does happen from time to time. Plug the model numbers for both trimmers on line and see if the part numbers are the same for both trimmers.

  • @timjones6236
    @timjones6236 6 лет назад

All well and good until you discover the retailer/manufacturer rounded off the screw slots so you can't undo them! It's called making you buy a new one. However, there's a way around that, use grips or saw a slot in the screw head for a flat head to fit. If the shaft came loose and moved during operation over the years there's good chance you won't need a new drive shaft, just some adjustment and initiative.

Mine on a GT echo 1100 was sheared off about 4" up from the spinning head. I had to remove the head. That's actually how I foind out the drive shaft was broken. I was taking apart the spinning head to see if there was some reason down there why it wasn't spinning- possible jam of weeds, or some foreign material. When I got the head off, 4 inches of drive shaft fell out. Its all back together now waiting for the new drive shaft to put in.
BTW, thanks for the video, very helpful with the addition of the step by step instructions under "Description" in your parts detail for drive shaft part C506000030
