Wonderful, powerful, dark.... his violin packs a punch! I believe this is back in the days when he played a Guadagnini. Now he's onto the "Willemotte" Strad, and before that the "Abergavenny" Strad (which Florian Leonhard helped him acquire). Leonhard can be heard saying in a documentary that he thought it was time for Kavakos to move up a tier and go from a Guadagnini to a Stradivari but in my opinion the violin in this video really shows off all the colours, emotion and brilliant technique that Kavakos has to offer. I wish he would go back to a Guadagnini. There'd be no shame in it. I feel the same with Julian Rachlin as well. He used to play a Del Gesu then transitioned to a Strad, but that beautiful and iconic "Rachlin sound" comes from a Del Gesu in my opinion.
For real. I recently watched an old video of Kavakos performing Lalo and there's nothing quite like the power he displayed, especially with the G string passages - powerful and rich in tone.
Wow jeez, I have recently been obsessed with Ysaye listening to many different artists. I have never heard this movement played like this, even Hahn. So musical and powerful, I can't even find words to describe it. I really thought at some point he would break a string or the violin would fall apart. I first heard him in a TwoSet video playing the Paganini 5th with such speed it was inhuman. He is one of the most unknown great violinists we have and I am happy to see he has a channel. Would love for some record label to give him a contract, all the Ysaye sonatas and all the Bach would be nice.
best performance of this piece!
Phenomenal ...
Prime Kavakos!

He has recorded both Ysaye (in 1999) and Bach (in 2022), and he is currently under contract with Sony. Also, I wouldn't call him "unknown" :p
truly constructed in an unorthodox manner

It's things like these that obliterate my self-esteem ;-;
paganini reincarnated istg
Nobody plays Ysaye that level!!
Was he playing a Fagnola violin?
This should be the Falmouth Stradivarius
This is the first movement, "Obsession" (just the title of the movement, not of the whole sonata)
