- Wildwood Guitars was beyond honored to team up with legendary amp builder Dave Friedman to create the Limited Edition Wildwood Small Box 50, an amp that was immediately embraced by our exceptional customers all over the world as the ultimate hot-rodded 50 watt Plexi-style platform. We have been blown away by the incredible demand and warm reception, and couldn't be happier with our first ever Limited Edition amplifier.
When we had the opportunity to create another amp to add to our Wildwood Friedman line, we decided to do something just a bit different. We didn't want to create another 50 watt variation, or even a 100 watt, fire breathing monster. After all, the BE-100 is the flagship Friedman amplifier for good reason, and going bigger wasn't going to solve the problems of the everyday musician. The real intrigue for the Wildwood Staff was something a bit...smaller. Meet the Wildwood PT-20, a simple, straight forward 20 watt platform that builds on the original PT-20, known for incredible, signature Friedman tone in a 20 watt, hand wired package.
The Friedman WW PT-20 utilizes a three-way gain structure switch, similar to that found on the Mini Dirty Shirley, a staff favorite here at Wildwood, which allows players the opportunity to adjust the gain structure to their tastes, whether that's the perfect sparkling British clean tone or a hot-rodded gain monster. To take things a step further, we added an additional boost switch, inspired by the now signature boost channel found on our Wildwood Small Box 50, pushing the preamp section into an ultra saturated, yet articulate tone monster. (NOTE: Engaging this fiendishly savage mode does compress and saturate the signal, causing a slight drop in volume. Adjust your Master Volume to taste.) To top things off and add an additional layer of versatility, we've added Dave's ultra popular "FAT" switch to the back of the amp, giving players the option to beef up the pre-amp side, specifically for use with single coil equipped instruments or low volume sessions. The result is an amp that's simple to use, yet extremely flexible and arguably, one of the most versatile lunch box style amplifiers on the planet, allowing players the full spectrum of plexi style tones from clean to hot-rodded, over the top scream in a compact package and, more importantly, without compromise. The Wildwood PT-20 sports an aesthetic similar to it's big brothers, along with a unique Wildwood Guitars serial number.

This might be the best guitar tone I've ever heard.
I'll tell ya this much. Dave Friedman is a Tone God. You can't go wrong with any of his amps. If you're on a budget, and want huge tone, not wanting to spend anymore on an amphead, than $1500, I recommend this Pink Taco 20, The Wildwood Version, or the New JJ Jr 20, also the same price. Depends on what kind of music you play. I heard about Friedman 2 years ago. Did countless research on his projects, for no less than a year. They're all over the internet, and have demos all over You Tube. I finally broke down, and bought myself the Friedman BE-50 Deluxe Amphead, with a Friedman 4x12 speaker cabinet, with 2 celestion greenbacks on top, and 2 celestion vintage 30's on the bottom. As good as the Friedman Amp Demos sound on You Tube, if you're in front of one, get prepared to be blown away, by the best sound that you Have Ever Heard. I went into 5k debt with my Friedman Rig, but if you're on a budget, get either one of the two amp heads that I mentioned to you, with a Friedman 2x12 speaker cabinet, or a Friedman 1 speaker cabinet, either of which sounds great too. That was by far the greatest amp review I have ever seen. The sound/tone was so good and beyond what we could comprehend in 2017, that it caused a pandemic 3 years later in 2020, that still has use wearing masks.

I am lucky enough to live VERY close to Wildwood Guitars and shortly after purchasing my lovely Les Paul Classic Gold Top from them, I returned and picked up this head ... it sits atop a Mesa 2x12 vertical with V30's. Cruising around RUclips tonight, checking out other amps, in sort of a semi window shopping mode ... I came to the conclusion that well over a year (maybe two, fuck off, I'm old! ;) ) after purchasing this awesome little beast ... I still have the BEST sounding 20 watt EL84 based amp on planet Earth. Thank you Friedman. Thank you Wildwood Guitars. You both seriously fucking ROCK. Peace.

Love the PT-20 tone, but one thing I was not a fan of was it seemed there was no gain setting where you could get it to clean up nicely with the volume knob. Now with the addition of the 3 way toggle, I wonder if there is now a low gain setting that allows your guitar to clean up the way it can on the DS mini. To have the High gain tones of the PT-20 AND be able to have it clean up with your guitar knob (granted you would need lower gain settings) would be sweet.
Yeah, I have the Wildwood PT-20 and I couldn't believe they didn't show the two lower gain modes. The amp really shines in the lower gain settings imo -- to the point that I would only recommend a Pink Taco that has the 3-way switch. It cleans up beautifully and is very responsive to attack in the lower settings. You can also set the amp clean and use drive pedals for a different flavor.

I'd consider getting the new version of this amp, but I have yet to hear a really well dialed in demo of it. Koch is a great player (and even better guy), but he's not the right guy to demo this amp. And, Wildwood's return policy is horrific. Hopefully, someone will put out a good demo of their amp one of these days. It's too expensive to buy it on a whim....
