Yes. Merry comes back, Nami "Help me", and Dadan beats Garp will always be more emotionally powerful for me than the overrated Ace's death. And Merry's funeral.
This scene has been stuck in my mind ever since I was a kid. Just all of them jumping from the bridge, smiling and crying and seeing the merry there, for me it's the scene that had the most impact on me in this entire show. Goosebumps everytime I watch it.
It's so ironic that usopp was going to leave the Merry in Frankys workshop, and Kaku forced it out to sea, essentially insuring the strawhats escape. It's also from a writing perspective goated. Oda is a true master of his craft.
That's the thing which both frustrates and impresses me with One Piece. It can be so god-damn dumb and silly, the more serious or profound stuff (and there is plenty of it) is mostly subtextual and implied, and is often undercut by a joke to keep the tone light. I often want this story to just be fully serious for a little while, to talk openly about the big ideas and themes Oda is crafting the story around, but it almost never does, and never for very long. Sometimes I want One Piece to be more like Hunter x Hunter, which is much more up my alley in terms of tone and storytelling. But I've never experienced a story that hits it's emotional beats even 80% as hard as when One Piece is at its best. I think it's something about the emotional honesty of Oda's storytelling, the way it embraces big emotions over everything else. Whatever it is, One Piece just hits different emotionally, even if it doesn't lend itself to the kind of introspective character and thematic analysis which is usually more my jam.
Seeing every straw hat one by one begin to hear merry voice it’s 2023 and I still cry for the going merry 😂 r.i.p to the orginal ship of dreams. The thousand sunny is going strong.
Shit gets me everytime, I got a new friend into it recently and I was crying right as the wailing started ended up giving it away that something important was coming after trying to play off that Merry couldn't possibly be alive lolol goddammit
i cried harder here than the funeral
Yea man, tears of joy, lol idk if anything will ever top it
I cried harder here than Ace's death tbh
Yes. Merry's funeral and Ace's death are hella overrated. This scene is where real men cry.
I cried during both😭 The Merry was so loved

Oh my God Man. Oda won’t stop making me cry.
That's what fuels him.
I always lose it when Merry says, "i came to get you." The tears just break through.
