You give us hope. We had Tigerwood installed last year (spring ish). The company that installed used the wrong the "oil" and had to return to sand and refinish. That didn't work either. The re-application didn't last but a week and the gray began to appear. By the time fall came around we had a lot of black spotting on the drink rails and other boards. The deck gray'd out in most places. Needless to say, this experience was disturbing. Your video provides easy to do guidance for us to do it ourselves. Thanks.
Hi, I have to clean a ipe wood deck. The deck is only two years old but it's on a shaded area and It has mildew growing on the. Can i use this cleaner? After i clean will it take away the oils? Do I have to reseal or can i just clean it?
The only reason to apply oil to the bottom of the boards is if you are going to see them and want them to look more saturated. In most cases, applying oil to the bottom of the board is not recommended because it doesn't contribute to longevity or performance. Furthermore, the bottom of the boards will not be exposed to sunlight therefore, don't need UV protection. I always recommend against applying oil prior to installation. Install first, then oil.
I've had many customers ask me this. There must be an online source that is recommending this. No, there's no reason to oil the bottom of the boards... not that I've been able to think of.
How about if the owner tried to finish their ipe deck by themselves and used the wrong products? Now it needs to be stripped down with stripper, cleaner, and brighter. What is a good option?is mesmer’s ? Or do you also recommend penofin ipe oil. Help!!
The installer for our deck used the wrong product the first time they applied an "oil". Black spotting appeared and gray'd within a few days. They returned to sand and reapply the "correct stuff". That didn't work either. I am going to follow these directions and may have to use the sander for the worst spots this summer. I should note, that the company came up with every excuse for the initial errors from shingle debris cause the blackening to blaming us.
@@darrinway3577 i strip down the whole deck cleaned really good and i used the brighter for the dark sports i also sand it a bit to open the wood . I used mesmers and the results were amazing .
Penofin is okay, we've used it before. It is not as effective as Messmer's, in our experience. You are correct about the stripper, cleaner and brightener though. That's exactly what I'd recommend.
Can I power wash with only water (and at what psi?)? Or is scrubbing with messmer's renewer and brightener the better alternative? One of my boards has split on the end. Can I replace this with a new board and then stain and scrub (with messmer's) along with the other original boards? Will it match ok? Thanks.
Messmer’s is definitely not the best. It forms a film and ends up being harder to refinish later. Film forming stains may last a little longer than some products but when it comes to cleaning and adding another coat messmer’s is definitely not the best. I’m sure they sell it soo… I refinish decks and the best deck finish is Armstrong Clark. Trust me I’ve used everything and it is both the easiest and the best. This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
This is very helpful and informative. Getting ready to take delivery of 1100 lf of Ipe. Thank you.

Hi I have a balau deck and was wondering if this product will work on mine and can I get it in the uk
Good info...I'm about to build a Ipe deck. Should I oil both the bottom and top as well as the sides of each board prior to installing?
