Thank you, sir! Sept 2024 I am building a 20 ft x 16 ft outdoor deck with Brazilian South Pacific Redwood (Toren or Manilkara??) 5/4 x 6 decking on pressure treated 2x6 wood joists (they are wet from Home Depot LOL). The clearance to ground on three sides of the deck will be ~ 12 inches. I will cover the area below the deck with a 6 mil black PE plastic vapor barrier with 2-in pea gravel as ballast. We live near a mountain canyon that provides morning and evening convection winds. This deck will be 90% screened from the sun (in the summer months) by a large deciduous shade tree. I live at 4500 ft elevation in northern Utah with weather extremes between -5* F in winter to +107*F in summer. We see 36 in of snow fall in the valley each winter that will endure for a month or so. Summers, after the spring rains, are hot and dry. Usually 95* - 105* in the hot part of summer with relative humidity averaging 'bone dry.' I am purchasing kiln dried 5x4 x 6 (8% avg) lumber from a warehouse in Oregon. I intend to ship it to Utah and set it up on cinder blocks or equal in an open (covered from sun and rain) carport for 30 days before installation (later this fall). I intend to coat all 4 sides and edges with a high quality Tung UV oil prior to installation. I will surface screw each board 2X to each joist (19.2 in O/C spacing) with color matched SS 305 screws. Anything you can see that I have missed? Suggestions???

Messmer’s is definitely not the best. It forms a film and ends up being harder to refinish later. Film forming stains may last a little longer than some products but when it comes to cleaning and adding another coat messmer’s is definitely not the best. I’m sure they sell it soo… I refinish decks and the best deck finish is Armstrong Clark. Trust me I’ve used everything and it is both the easiest and the best. This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

I have a cumaru deck that stands 7’ off the ground with plenty of air flow. Most of the boards cupped!! I rented a heavy duty floor sander and just about killed myself sanding it down flat. Try installing the boards with the end grain arching downwards instead of upwards in the direction of the cup. Live and learn!

TIP: Use a brush to get oil between the boards first, then come back with the pad. It will look much better.

super helpful - I showed this to my wife and it set expectations for what a hardwood deck was going to look like over time and that annual maintenance was going to be required.. but not hard to do

This is a great show and tell. I have Cumaru on the way for a privacy fence. It won't get a lot of direct sunlight so it should hold up pretty good.

Don’t use a belt sander. On wide areas it will leave gouge marks.

DO NOT USE MESSMERS. I’ve used it 4 times and it just doesn’t last. 5 months tops. I’m extremely picky and a touch neurotic! Three times I’ve actually used a gentle screening (sanding) before the application. The oil just doesn’t penetrate my Massranduba deck. If anyone has any suggestion I would love a reply. All the plastic hidden clips aren't sufficient for Ipe. The new Camo stainless clip is a good as it gets right now. Also, consider using 5/4 x 4 instead. Less movement and less prone to cupping.

Why are they so hard to find now? I started a project using 2x2’ deckwise tiles and now I can’t find them anywhere!

Hands down, The Camo tool system is terrific. I recommend using Stainless steel for all exterior use unless you're using in a very dry climate. The Pro plug is also a very good recommended plug system as well which is needed for securing the outside perimeter pieces.

Anyone know how Ipe reacts to wet weather of the PacNW under the shade of tree canopies? I'm using it for pathway use and concerned that moss (that grows everywhere) and the smoothness will make it too slippery to walk on.

I live in Virginia Beach, Virginia A decade or so ago I put in a (~18 X '20') Cumnaru deck with four full width span stairs. I took my time and was completely anal on the install. I spent a fortune on the wood and did all the labor myself. It looks like a million bucks. Since then I have only used Messmers oil on the finish. It's very expensive. It's a royal pain in the ass to apply. It does not last long here in VB. YES!!! It looks GREAT (for about 3 -4 months.....MAYBE 6) but after that? After ten years of this ordeal I am not sure its worth the aggravation and am considering letting my deck go grey with just a pressure wash twice a year. I am now an old geezer. Each spring I laboriously clean the deck. I have always used TSP or some similar deck cleaning product. I have experimented a bunch of different things. They all do pretty much the same thing. It's the pressure washer that really does all the work. Everyone will tell you not to pressure wash a deck but most of them do not own an Ipe or Cumaru deck. These exotics are almost as hard as concrete. It's not Southern Yellow Pine. Just use your head while pressure washing and use the right nozzle. Nothing else will get it really clean unless you're 21 years old, have a very small deck and NOTHING else to do except spend days on your hands n knees scrubbing the deck. Or want to sand it. I am NOT that guy. Once you've CLEANED it and then BLEACHED it with Oxalic Acid and let it dry, you can add the Messmers. You MUST follow the directions to a T and even then, you MUST get on your hands and knees with a dozen old towels and manually rub the hell out of the deck to eliminate ALL of the residual finish within the first 30 minutes or so. Note*. This is a HELL of a lot of work. If it's sticky AT ALL, you're not done. If it's sticky, and you do this in the spring like 98 percent of the humans out there, air born pollen will STICK to the finish. If you leave it AT ALL sticky, it will attract all kinds of dirt and look like hell in no time. If you apply it razor thin, (wet edge), don't you dare overlap and then get on your hands and knees to wipe up all the excess it will STILL only last 6 months or so before it needs cleaning again. UNLESS of course you live in an area with no sunlight and no rain. Then it might just be the cats ass! I am now looking into applying a water based product. The oil is a giant pain in the rear. It looks AMAZING.....for a little while.

I purchased a box of these to see if I liked them. They are a bit pricey, but quality is very good. However, when I wanted to buy more they would not sell me any unless I purchased my wood from BWDepot. Bad way to treat customers, but a good way to piss off customers and not get any referrals!

Do you use some sort of tool to remove them after the tile is installed into a deck?

Personally experienced great results with Flood UV clear on my Ipe deck.

Biggest problem I’ve had is getting decent quality from the mills. It’s tough enough working with this stuff, even harder when the boards are all different widths and sometimes even can be 1/8-1/4” different width in a 18’ board

Something to consider is the framing. Because if you use treated lumber, It will rot before the decking GUARANTEED. So choose wisely. I went with an HDPE reinforced floor joist from (tangent technologies)

I had a service come and power wash my extensive IPE decks and boardwalk. It is only 4 years old. It is an ocean front salty environment so it was pretty dirty. Since being power washed, people are getting some splinters which never happened before being power washed. Examining further, if i run hands over it does feel a little rough. Not smooth like it used to be. What is the best way to cure this? A light sanding? Splinters are no fun! (We like our deck and boardwalk gray in our New England area. Its a classic look here. Thank you!

#8 screws, especially the 2.5" do not work in Ipe, I keep spinning the heads off the Deckwise screws.

Guessing Messmers asked you not to post the follow-up, since oiling this wood when it's exposed to sunlight is a giant waste of time and money.

Cupping is also a function of grain orientation. Shrinkage will make the boards crown and well as cup, depending on the grain orientation. My answer, to avoid and movement problems, is to use a 4" wide Rift and Qtr sawn stock, no matter what the species is.

I have Massarannduba decking and nothing seems to work sealer wise. Mesmers used to work great until they had to change the VOC's and now it stays on for 3 months only. Deck looks horrible now, dont know what to use.

Why can’t you clean it with bleach around 3%? And then use a wood brightener after?

Really impressed with the Part A & B brightener. I currently use SW’s 3-in-1 REVIVE, but I may have to switch to your Part A & B. I’ll test your product out vs revive, but I strongly suspect yours is better. With that said, I’ve tried the Armstrong & Clark deck stain and I find it looks slightly better than this product but both are very top-of-the-line products. Cheers!

Don't have a bowrench? Make 2 wedges out of a 6" long piece of stock. screw one down to the joist. Hammer the other wedge between the Ipe and the fixed wedge - as you hammer it along, it will push the Ipe into position to screw in place.
