1939 Ford Junkyard Hot Rod Revival - Ep. 21

- In the last episode on the Ford Forgotten Hot Rod Matt was able to accomplish a huge milestone, and got the new floors installed! The rocker panels were also in very bad shape, and have to be replaced. MACs has 1937-40 rockers that will save us some time and get this project back on the road. Matt also had to rebuild a mounting foot from the B-pillar to the rocker that was rotted away. Once the rockers were trimmed to fit, Matt punched holes for plug welds. After a bunch of welding the front floors are solid and the cross bracing was able to be removed. The Forgotten Hot Rod is very close to taking its first test drive around the yard, and not far off from street driving!

The car is really shaping up! I am a dog lover too, it's nice to see a busy man taking time to appreciate a dog!
Thanks! Moon is normally getting all the attention when he's in the shop, whether he's demanding to play catch or he's begging for pizza crust he's the center of attention haha. Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
Yep...love his pupper..he's cute :-)
Man, that hole puncher! So much faster than drilling for spot welds.
It is SO worth it to find one! -Matt/ITG
Matt, thanks for showing the different steps in the construction. I don't have a garage anymore so I get my car fix watching your videos and the subject matter is what keeps me coming back.... and love ole Moon hanging around too.
Thanks for watching Lee!
I am 73 years old. I’ve done bodywork all of my life. And what you are doing is exactly what I was doing for a lot of my career. I have built many hot rods
Love this series, and looking forward to seeing this thing roll under it's own power. Awesome dog too!
Thanks for watching!
I agree with you. Love the series also.
Nice progress! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!! -Matt/ITG
So cool to see this coming together with new floor Pam and rockers
Very clever skilled workmanship
Thanks for watching!!
I am really enjoying watching the progress of this build. I am glad that you don’t edit your errors. 👊☮️
Thanks we try and show the reality of building stuff at home! As long as you fix the errors it just proves we're human!
Matt Terry here. Floor looks great, ol Henry would be proud. My 40 Dlx is going to need floors. Got new one's from Paul Bradley in N.C. later.
Thanks for watching Terry!
Wish I lived closer to meet up and say hi and be able to pick your brain about stuff. Love seeing this project come along.
Thanks Joe! Hope we can meet at a show or event sometime in the future!
Your tools are awesome. The 1939 Ford is looking great. Thank you showing us how to do things.
Watching this with a coffee in hand. Really great metal work. Love the dog.
Thanks so much Shawn!
Nice work matt. That floor looks excellent 👍
Thanks for watching Michael!
Great job and instructions.
Thanks for watching!
... as much as I love your piles of projects ... I keep going back to just the garage itself. Love, love, love it.
As usual, thanks again !
Thanks Jamie, it's my little slice of heaven! -Matt/ITG
Every shop needs a good "therapy dog" even if they do get in the way every now and then!
Love the builds, you've certainly got an eye for the little things
Haha yep we need them around to eat leftover pizza and keep moral up!
Great metal work as always! Thanks for sharing it with us!
Great episode Matt, Moon is probably going to leave you a surprise for not continuing to toss the ball LOL! The Hot Rod is really shaping up and looking good
Haha nahhh Moon is the greatest dog in that sense! He just was bummed he couldn't play fetch outside since the weather was crap that day!
I love how you have all of the vintage machines for fixing these vintage cars. You and Jonathon W are very much alike in this way'
Late to this video but that hole punch is cool. By the looks of it I thought it is expensive so I looked them up. Holly hell I was right. But cool to watch
What a good helper Moon is!
Sweet, the thirty nine! She's looking great! Thanks again for the videos.
Another really nice video, Matt. Thanks!
Thanks for watching Chris!
Now if you can teach your dog to go get tools for you that would be awesome that car is looking great inside glad you took the bracing out great job!!
Ha yea I'm still working on fetching tools! That would be amazing! Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
The floor and rocker panels install looks great dude!
Thanks Rob!
@@IronTrapGarage You're welcome Matt.
Nice job on the rockers Matt, new floor looks awesome. That definitely saved you a lot of grief for sure. Good idea to just bend you something up for the trunk. Moon wanted to help.. haha
Thanks Robbie! Yea since the floor is fairly simple I think we can build something for it pretty easily! Working on it this week I hope!
im lovin that 39,thanks!!!!!!
Again a great episode! Cool to see the dog in the garage. Our dog is a good company in the garage too.
Thanks for watching and Moon says woof!
@@IronTrapGarage Matteus says woof back

Hey Matt and co. Nice to see the revival coming along so well. Nice to see the dog helping with moral there too haha. Keep it up mate, going into winter there and summer here already had some 40c plus days here and it's not summer yet. Give me hot weather any day love it. Nice to watch the progress. Jeremy Australia. PS. Can I send you guys something do you have an address where we can send you a gift. I have something for you I'm sure you will like haha. I want you to put it on one of the videos of you guys eating it I'm sure that will help with moral too. Jezza
Hey Jeremy! We'd love to get a care package!! Send us an email and we can sort it out! Irontrapgarage@gmail.com
The rocker panels look really good, great job.
Thanks for watching!
Its looking really awesome. When you finish building it, you should give it to me. Lol. Great job. Cant wait to see it when its finished
Thanks Russ! I'll probably drive it for a summer and then sell since I have so many other projects lined up!
My Great Dane Sweet Pea is always right in the thick of things while I work on my old trucks. Wouldn't have it any other way. Moons cool.
Great Danes are the best! Moon is part dane and I used to have 2 danes for many years! Great four legged sidekicks.
The dog wants you to quit working and play ball. LOL
Every second of the day he thinks revolves around him haha
I absolutely love this vehicle and I'm going to be sad when you're done with it but I would also like to see it painted I can't wait for all the body work you're going to do on this vehicle and I hope your painting it black or silver
Très belle restauration j'ai bien aimé votre travail super 👍👏
Awesome. Love these vids that are more close up on the repairs your doing!
Thanks for the feedback we're trying to show what goes into these projects! -Matt/ITG
Solid! That floor pan is supreme. Mac's prices are very reasonable too. Plug for Eastwood on those magnets. Very powerful and never in my way when welding.
Thanks Drew, we only try and support companies that we use ourselves in our projects! Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
It's absolutely great to see the fabrication! I really enjoy it a lot! The new floor pan is great!
Thanks for watching Jon!
hahaha your dog needing attention cracked me up ;)
Really enjoying this build, keep up the great work!
Thanks Dave!
I’ve been watching you guys the last couple months .i missed you at Hershey .im from delco I just got a nice 401 nailhead out in Boyertown from a donor car more important is I got the floor braces from the 64 wildcat donor that fit my 63 electra sports coupe..you guys do nice work.this is my first car I’m restoring now I’m ready to purchase something really early .thanks for giving me the itch..lol..
Sorry we missed you Charles! Sounds like you were in our stomping grounds! Lots of good stuff hiding around here still! Glad to hear we're giving you the itch! -Matt/ITG
Every video makes me want to get more work done on my stuff
That means we're doing our job! Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
Love the dog! Thanks for not editing that out, it was very funny!
Haha he HAD to be in this episode apparently!
Looking good.
Car looks great Matt, i love the dog...too cute
Thanks for watching!
@@IronTrapGarage you build some cool stuff, i enjoy the channel
I am glad that i'm not the only one who has to play ball when working on my car!
Haha yepppp If it's play time Moon forces the subject haha. -Matt/ITG
I love it. I have done a lot of work like this over the years. I picked up some great tips watching this. Like back welding the corner. And how you measured for the center in the rocker for the carriage bolt hole. By the way. I an really diggin that turret punch. The car is coming along great.
Thanks for watching Michael!
Looking great Matt! You dog is comic relief and the 90’s rap. :)
Haha good ear!
Christ you guys...that is commitment
We aren't messing around! Thanks for watching!
I see Moon belongs to the same canine philosophical school as my dog: "…your out and on my level... lets play!"
Haha yep never fails!
I wanna see a 360 burnout in the snow. You've got a great attitude, loving your channel.
Haha we may get it going just in time for some of that nonsense! -Matt/ITG
@@IronTrapGarage I want to see it with some of those old fashioned "Snow tires" on the back.
Awesome progress on the car, can't wait for more videos. Also can't believe how much flack you get for some stuff and how calm you are through it. Keep up the great work
No sweat off my back!
Looking forward to the installation of the outer rockers. I am working on a similar reviving of a 1934 Hupmobile but I'm not sure what I'm doing...your videos are showing a good order that I can follow.
Thanks for watching Stephen!
will be looking foward to watch you do the trunk pan i have one to do in a 65 rambler.
Thanks for watching Timothy!
Good stuff Matt .
Thanks for watching!
Love this build!
Thanks for watching Roger!
Easy peasy work, just time burning bandit is all. Looks like your dad maybe working in there with you. Thinking you should of done a two door delete on the 41 mercury as that is a great body and two door deletes are not hard, just a time burner. Dogs helping adds to the shows character. I hope your brother doesn't see the big window. Here's that, would test your skills and they really are cool two doors and parts are out there since it has a lot of the floor pan still there tieing the front and back together. Someday people will bring their projects to you as your name gains fame. Enlarge the shop with a dry storage on the side with a snow apron on the front to help keep out cold when moving projects to the side and give some waking room in there. That solid core vice is sweet, might weld up the digits that add character now so you could use it as a anvil for shaping body pieces. You have some of the nicest old school tools I have seen in years. I'm 73, not dead. I used stuff like that when I built a 49 mercury two door drop top with a 331 hemi engine project I did in the sixties that won several car shows as it was perfect when it rolled out in eight months from looking like what your working on to a car you could park on a show room. I made a ton of money I needed to upgrade my shop or I would of kept it. I put flatheads in some fifty chevy pickups and they were sweethearts with the duel exhaust and three on tree and four speed rigs. I did probably fifteen or more as you lose count over the years. Part of the fun of getting old is looking back and remembering the bad to the bone cars and trucks. I got fast at fixing them when you do them like assembly lines as I had three of them in my shop at the same time. I had too big a building for years and finally built inside so I did not have to heat north america. I made it though where you could drive from side to side as I went down one third then blocked on my store rooms in the back on the part I worked in.... 80 X 200 building looked good till the heat bill came in and the heat went off and we tarped things in the building and then we were wet all the time which was worse/LOL Good video Matt
Thanks for sharing your background Morgan! No father/son deals here. Just friends and myself working on this part of the project. We allow young and old to come work and get their hands dirty. I hope that them helping inspires them to work on or get their own old car project! Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
Yea his shop reminds me of the metal shop I used to live next door too..lots of the same old school tools..and the owners son let me work on my projects there back in the late 90's.
Matt great job and what you doing love the fact that moon was around you you be careful with the ant freeze in all the crap you’re pulling out of cars,,,, I had my black lab the poison that the drinking water ran down off of bank from the back of a repair facility almost lost her love the dog being a pain in the butt with the ball am a huge dog lover take care junkman do
Thanks Samuel we keep an eye on him around chemicals. Appreciate the warning
Good stuff. Boy you sure welded those cross braces in.lol.
My hole puncher has a dull punch for the smaller size I wanted to use so we went larger and took more welds to fill the larger holes. Reminded me I need to replace a few of the dies!
Full floorpan, pretty trick.
Thanks for watching!
It’s looking awesome 🤙
You've been building a pretty decent car out of something that looked pretty bad .You also have a good eye for aquisitions ,a benefit from staying focused .
Technically skillful and a very determine person indeed ....!
Thank you Bob!
hey dad !! gime my ball !! ; )) nice dog !! and good job on this car !!
eric from France
Thanks for watching Eric!
Looking great!!
Thanks Cody!
That really makes it solid very nice indeed. You did a great job installing welding and fabricating your parts I really like how you punched holes for spot welds and made your door jamb part. whats the small gap behind the door between the floor and the quarter panel at the bottom? Looks like it wants the floor to be pushed up a little more to meet the quarter panel.
That was the section where I said we need to make a little sliver to fill it in. Mismeasurement when making the replacement c-channel sections when putting the pan in.
talented
Very cool
Great job putting the floor and rockers back together. What I'm waiting for is the repair of the hacked out firewall. That's going to be a bitch but I'm sure Matt is up to the task as always.
Thanks Ray! I have a plan for it, I'll have to probably weld it from inside the car to avoid removing the body again. I'll probably TIG it to reduce sparks and possible damage to the engine components.
I like you're helper !
I see our vices are in the same condition, the '39 is looking better every day, Freddie out.
Haha I like to call it "perfectly broken in"
I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT VIDEO!! ......I LOVE THIS CAR!!
Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
ok big question--are you going to paint the inside panels with encapuslator or anything
Yes once everything is done being welded and seam sealed we will coat the entire inside and hidden areas with Encapsulator and Internal Frame Coating.
Trying to work with our "fur-faced" friends present is always a challenge! You must be used to it!! lol
Haha yep whenever it gets cold out and he can't wander in and out of the shop he gets pushy to get attention! You just get used to it haha
My '39 was in so much better shape when I built- but then it was in 1980 and it hadn't been sitting in a swamp! Enjoy the vids!
Yep it's getting harder to find clean examples these days! We just want to show what can be built with a budget and a little work!
@@IronTrapGarage Trade him your steering wheel for his...it must look 40 years better than yours...lol'.
Love this. Keep going
My older Brothers Hot Rod a 47 Ford Coupe was flat black and had shaved hood and trunk
this would have been about 1959..1961 there about's and had some cool pin striping on it
I remember going out in it with his buddy both these guys had sun tans and slicked back duck tails hair and we went to the local drive in hamburger joint .....the car also had baby moons
and dual exhausts and the dash was striped also ...car was loud really rapped . I think they sanded the black paint so it was flat black seem to remember something like that . Had lake pipes at one point also just thought about it they removed the chrome on each side of the car
and later on the door handles on the outsides ,I think he used the vent windows to get in but all of the work was done by my brother or his friends one had a Model A hot rod ...or T ?
Sounds like a killer ride! Thanks for sharing!
I wonder if the people at the junkyard where you got the 39 would like to see when you are done? That is shaping up to one sweet ride.
We have plans to return it to the yard once it’s finished 🤘
What do you use for shocks? Are they modern shocks on those? Do you use sway bars on that style of cars?
cool dog, nice car.
The floors look really nice! Are you going to leave the firewall as is?
Was wondering if you made your floor pan from scratch or is there somewhere one can buy them from I have a 37 dodge coupe that needs complete floor pans and trunk floor also
Hi Johnny, The floor and rockers were bought from Mac's parts (they specialize in Early Ford Restoration parts)
Love this build, when finished, it will be so cool. Just wondering, due animals ever get "arc flash"...? Boy I did one time. ..thought I was going blind !
We usually have Moon exit the garage when we're doing a lot of welding. He also knows to stay away while we're welding from growing up in the shop.
I almost feel guilty laughing at the dog and your pain , but that's real life.
Haha it's the life of having a spoiled pup! They're the center of attention ALWAYS! Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
I think your dog wants t play... the 39 Ford is looking great.... John D.
Haha yep! He's always looking to play fetch!
Moon wants to go for a ride already
Yea this one he is gonna love! He can stick his head out those big back windows!
The engine really rocks back and forth a lot. How are the engine mounts?
It was because the body wasn't mounted... buggy style suspension with no weight in it.
Very cool !😎👍🏼
Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
IronTrap Garage you really do nice work! Why not a more door street rod? It’s always about the two doors... Dare to be different please anyway keep the good videos coming!!!👍🏼😎
For a second there, I thought your buddy helping you was Richard from Bad Obsession Motorsports (project binky) lol. Kinda got excited thinking it was a collab of some sorts 😂
Can you imagine getting Bad Obsession together with Iron Trap....OMG to coin a phrase...
Zip discs and dust. That dust is nasty, try wearing a dust mask for a day while grinding and welding, Once you see what the filter looks like you will use the masks much more often. Yes they are a pain in the butt - but the amount of dirt you will find in the filters beats getting it down into your lungs. I used to get laughed at when I started masking up 45 years ago, now when i am working on a site or in a shop most of the folks do not think twice about the masks and are wearing them as well. It would be nice to know you might be around in 40 years and still doing this.
A nice 32 with those Ardun heads might be finished by then:)
Put a filter in the top hose or you will block the radiator up quick.
You must have some pretty serious equipment. One piece floor? Guess I’m going to have to have to watch. You make this all with Eastwood equipment?
www.macsautoparts.com/ford_mercury_early/front-floor-pan-62-long-painted-black-except-station-wagon.html
nice dog,
I enjoy your channel more than having the relatives over for Thanksgiving dinner. Is that wrong?
HAHA! Thanks for the kind words! We're gonna do an Xmas giveaway this year that might make you want our gifts more than the family's gifts to ya! Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
I suppose that it is not wrong as long as you are not expecting the same relatives to loan you money or attend your funeral. Just teasing of course.
Your dog helps like my cat Harley
Yea they want attention when they want it!
Nice job Matt! What type of tig torch do you use? I have the ole tried & true foot pedal plus I have a thumb wheel torch, don't really like that. Anyway another great video! Looking forward to the next video!!
Hi Michael, I have a little WP-9 torch I use for 99% of what I do. The Eastwood machine I use has a little on-off trigger and you set up the weld functions on the machine. Makes it easy for delicate work like this. I never could get a hang of the roller wheel either.
@@IronTrapGarage Matt, thanks for the reply, I have one of the old Miller 180 Syncrowaves, I can weld sheet metal pretty good feathering the foot pedal, great job on the floor pan, it's pretty cool to be able to use the vintage machinery you have...hope you drag that 35 Ford pickup home...take care..
