      @Bitten Apple fair enough, I've just recently switched to linux, been probably 4 or so months, for me it has been good enough at least for gaming, so I'm mostly satisfied on that end myself, seeing that linux gaming is backed by valve and the steam deck / steam os community at least makes me hopeful that it will keep on doing well

    Hey Chris!
    The parameters that you mentioned for a older kernel in the "Speed Up Linux" video does boost performance but also decrease security. I searched it on reddit and one of the posts mentioned "noibrs noibpb nopti nospectre_v2 nospectre_v1" gives the same performance. Is it going to be safer to use the mentioned one than completely disabling mitigations?

    • @ChrisTitusTech
      @ChrisTitusTech  2 года назад +17

      It’s the same thing. Mitigations off was added to 5.12 kernel so you don’t need to type all that.

    • @beahydrated
      @beahydrated 2 года назад +5

      @@artu3359 Mitigations is mostly a concern for servers, datacentres, stuff that is remoted into. Stuff where nonpriveliged malicious users want to leak root's credentials or other sensitive information.
      Everything thats on your desktop was put there yourself. You are the mitigation.
      While servers have to be hardened because they run headlessly and indefinitely.
      Worst case scenario, turn mitigations off for gaming, and mitigations on if youre doing something sketchy

  • @tehmoriz

    one of the drawbacks of the immutable file system, is that even if you choose to unlock it, the next OS update will delete everything that you didn't install through flatpak.
    this is an issue for me, because in the event that i want to use my gaming mouse on the steam deck (as a desktop/laptop replacement, for example), the required daemon, ratbagd, cannot be installed as a flatpak (because it is a service).
    so unless i want to go through the trouble of reinstalling and resetting every time the OS updates, the steam deck is pretty unsuitable as a desktop/laptop replacement for me.

    • @AndersHass
      @AndersHass 2 года назад +2

      I would also say if one hoped this OS was going to be a great one for purely desktop then you are mistaken.
      Better using something else as it is currently for anyone who wants to tinker with it.
      It might be fine for average user who is fine with the limitation out of the box.

    • @AaronM-zh4ug
      @AaronM-zh4ug 2 года назад +1

      Maybe try and do a login script? Of course, a tiny bit of programming is needed. A simple way to do it is to put an empty file in a root folder. The login script checks if the script exists, if not, it runs any commands you run to get the system to where you want it to be. Keep in mind that I haven't tested this myself, so may not work.

    I just want to point out the WinesapOS project(formerly MacGamingStick) incase you haven't heard of it. Version 3.x of the distro is based on Steam OS and Manjaro. However I'm running an older version of it at the moment as I believe Arch has unilaterally broken opengl on my configuration in the newest release. But what's interesting is it's almost like it's a rolling release but it's almost versioned at the same time. It handles updates differently than steamos in a more traditional distro-like way so you don't have to deal with every update deleting everything you written

  • @flamingscar5263
    @flamingscar5263 2 года назад +7

    1 small nit pick
    By default the steam deck is very secure, at first no root password seems like it would be a security vulnerability but it's not
    The way Valve has it setup by default is that anything that wants to execute root commands needs the root password, but there isn't a root password, so until you set one it's impossible for you or any application to accsess root privileges, the only thing that can accsess root is steamOS itself

    • @bigfood2001
      @bigfood2001 2 года назад +7

      but knowing this, malware could simply execute the passwd command and set a new password.. ?! 🧐

    • @tablettablete186
      @tablettablete186 2 года назад

      I would say the right approach is to use no_new_privs bit (it doesn't allow gaining new privileges, hence the name)

    • @ChrisTitusTech
      @ChrisTitusTech  2 года назад +13

      I would not say its very secure... it literally doesn't have a user password and can issue sudo commands simply by setting one.
      The internet baffles me... I get roasted for showing how to disable kernel mitigations and then folks don't freak out about there being no password.

    • @offspec
      @offspec 2 года назад

      @@ChrisTitusTech Very secure is an overstatement, if you were hit by an exploit that gave you shell access to the device you're right that they would be able to do anything so long as they set a password. The intent to attempt to prevent users from running root level commands without understanding what they're doing. The ssh daemon is either disabled by default or doesn't work without setting up a password, so short of getting it by something like shellshock your system isn't at risk unless it's physically in the hands of the attacker, at which point we all know almost any system is at risk.
      I think the right solution here is to either use the userspace level pacman wrapper I've seen someone working on, or at Valve's level SteamOS 3.0 with a prompt to choose a password the first time you enter desktop mode.

    • @flamingscar5263
      @flamingscar5263 2 года назад +1

      @@ChrisTitusTech I'm talking mote from a general audience, which the steam deck is aimed at
      I'd trust a linux noob more with having no root password then with having one
      I know from when I was a linux noob that I destroyed multiple linux installs bu executing commands I should not be executing
      Obviously it's more secure to have a password if you know what your doing
      But if you don't know what your doing, which most steam deck owners don't, then it's a liability

    Also, I'm very interested in containerized applications, and generally use Flatpak as much as possible, including using the Flathub Beta, and replacing various natively installed GNOME components with their Flatpak counterparts.
    The spellcheck in my browser recognizes "containerized", but not "natively".
    It keeps suggesting "nativity".
