Thanks for Sharing Natalie and glad this made sense to you! We want our kids to want. Developing the instrinsic motivation and ability to learn and grow through their experiences with self and self/other.
This is so right-on & so much of the main point. My daughter is 17. I continue to struggle on a daily basis explaining or find myself saying to my daughter "you should want to do this, or you should have thought to say this, or this is something that you should have thought of automatically". My instant reaction is always, well if she is informed she will know going forward-which is not the case! I feel like I am not doing her already low self esteem any good. I am going upstream without paddles. Can this be helped at age 17? She does not think she has any issue with this. Because of this denial/defensiveness, I don't know how to break thru that wall. I have always thought you cant help someone who wont accept & admit that they need help or that they have a problem. My daughter is ending Junior year in high school & does not have any connection with another peer. But has acquaintances who she says are her "friends". It is so draining.
